    Material flow analysis is used to quantify the material turnover of a defined system, relying on data about flows and stocks from different sources with varying quality. In this study, the belief that the available data are representative for the value of interest is expressed via fuzzy sets, specifying the possible range of values of the data. A possibilistic framework for data reconciliation in MFA was developed and applied to a case study on wood flows in Austria. The framework consists of a data characterisation and a reconciliation step. Membership functions are defined based on the collected data and data quality assessment. Possible ranges and consistency levels (quantifying the agreement between input data and balance constraints) are determined. The framework allows problematic data and model weaknesses to be identified and can be used to illustrate the trade-off between confidence in the data and the consistency levels of resulting material flows.

    Abstract A mixing strategy capable of handling a suitable agitation within digester tanks is a necessity in order to assure continuous contact of substrates and degraders inside bioreactors. As mixing is an energy demanding process, the energy needed for a proper mixing contributes to overall efficiency of digesters. In the current study, the aim is to assess the incorporation of biogas bubble creation into the mixing of anaerobic digesters of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) tanks with and without an external vertical mixer, in order to analyze the possibility of considering bubble creation as an imperative factor in the mixing scenario. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) prepares the opportunity to simulate the creation biogas bubbles within a stirred tank of anaerobic digester, in a combination of an Eulerian and Lagrangian platform. The amount of dead volume, average velocity, velocity gradient and bubble particle trajectories are analyzed and discussed. Our key findings are as follows: biogas bubble creation contributes to the reduction of dead volume inside the digester tank, once there is no external rotating mixing, or once the amount of mixer rotation speed is low. However, either in low or in high mixer rotation speed the biogas bubble creation does not have a considerable effect of velocity gradient.

    In vehicles that are parked, no ventilation and/or air conditioning takes place. If a vehicle is exposed to direct solar radiation, an immediate temperature rise occurs. The high cabin air temperature can threaten children and animals that are left unattended in vehicles. In the USA, lethal heat strokes cause a mean death rate of 37 children per year. In addition, temperature-sensitive goods (e.g. drugs in ambulances and veterinary vehicles) can be adversely affected by high temperatures. To calculate the rise of the cabin air temperature, a dynamic model was developed that is driven by only three parameters, available at standard meteorological stations: air temperature, global radiation and wind velocity. The transition from the initial temperature to the constant equilibrium temperature depends strongly on the configuration of the vehicle, more specifically on insulation, window area and transmission of the glass, as well as on the meteorological conditions. The comparison of the model with empirical data showed good agreement. The model output can be applied to assess the heat load of children and animals as well as temperature-sensitive goods, which are transported and/or stored in a vehicle.

    In vehicles that are parked, no ventilation and/or air conditioning takes place. If a vehicle is exposed to direct solar radiation, an immediate temperature rise occurs. The high cabin air temperature can threaten children and animals that are left unattended in vehicles. In the USA, lethal heat strokes cause a mean death rate of 37 children per year. In addition, temperature-sensitive goods (e.g. drugs in ambulances and veterinary vehicles) can be adversely affected by high temperatures. To calculate the rise of the cabin air temperature, a dynamic model was developed that is driven by only three parameters, available at standard meteorological stations: air temperature, global radiation and wind velocity. The transition from the initial temperature to the constant equilibrium temperature depends strongly on the configuration of the vehicle, more specifically on insulation, window area and transmission of the glass, as well as on the meteorological conditions. The comparison of the model with empirical data showed good agreement. The model output can be applied to assess the heat load of children and animals as well as temperature-sensitive goods, which are transported and/or stored in a vehicle.

    Guiding a transition to low carbon electricity requires a good understanding of the substitution of old by new technologies in the electricity industry. With the aim of explaining historical change from coal to gas in the British electricity industry, we develop a formal model of technological change, where energy technologies diffuse through the construction of new power plants. We considered two model versions: with rational and boundedly rational investors. In each model version, we look at the causal relations between price and output setting mechanisms, fuel and labour use, and investment decisions for different institutional arrangements. We quantify model parameters on data for the United Kingdom. We find that the version of the model with rational investors is capable of replicating well core features of UK electricity history. This includes a rapid diffusion of gas in electricity production, the evolution of the average size of newly installed plants, and a high percentage of electricity sales covered by (forward) contracts-for-difference. In this model setting, nuclear and renewable energies have no chance to diffuse on the market. In the version of the model with boundedly rational investors, nuclear power typically dominates electricity production. We discuss implications of our modelling results for making a transition to low carbon electricity in the future. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

    Abstract The public and the private sectors play fundamental roles in mobilizing capital to achieve the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development. In particular, developing countries can benefit from foreign direct investment (FDI) as a source of external financing in the private sector. This study aims to investigate whether FDI contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. We analyse a sample of 44 African countries regarding their SDG scores and apply a multivariate analysis and an ordered probit model. Our results indicate that the presence of foreign investors positively influences SDG scores. However, although FDI has a positive impact in areas such as basic infrastructure, clean water, sanitation, and renewable energy, some adverse environmental consequences may occur for host countries. In fact, the relationship between FDI and the probability of achieving SDG13 (Climate action) is negative. This study contributes to the literature on sustainable development and can be useful for decision-makers in developing investment plans to support the achievement of SDGs. Furthermore, we provide evidence of a positive influence of FDI on the SDGs, which might encourage further investments in Africa.

    Abstract The public and the private sectors play fundamental roles in mobilizing capital to achieve the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development. In particular, developing countries can benefit from foreign direct investment (FDI) as a source of external financing in the private sector. This study aims to investigate whether FDI contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. We analyse a sample of 44 African countries regarding their SDG scores and apply a multivariate analysis and an ordered probit model. Our results indicate that the presence of foreign investors positively influences SDG scores. However, although FDI has a positive impact in areas such as basic infrastructure, clean water, sanitation, and renewable energy, some adverse environmental consequences may occur for host countries. In fact, the relationship between FDI and the probability of achieving SDG13 (Climate action) is negative. This study contributes to the literature on sustainable development and can be useful for decision-makers in developing investment plans to support the achievement of SDGs. Furthermore, we provide evidence of a positive influence of FDI on the SDGs, which might encourage further investments in Africa.

    The removal of trace compounds contained in a biogas from the dry anaerobic digestion of organic waste was accomplished. The resulting data were monitored online with a direct injection mass spectrometry technique. Biochar from the pyrolysis of recovered wood waste was used as sorbent material. This material was selected to demonstrate the usefulness of recovered waste for the energy production purposes. Biochar withstands the removal of 2-butanone (158.8 mg/g), toluene (140.1 mg/g) and limonene (64 mg/g) better compared to sulfur (H2S 1.05 mg/g) and siloxane (D3, 1.28 mg/g) compounds. Hydrogen sulfide was the most abundant sulfur compound with the average concentration about 24 ppm(v). The tested sorbent material was able to withstand the H2S and siloxane concentration for almost 30 h with the biogas pilot plant conditions before toachieve the limit value for SOFC applications, 1 ppm(v) and 150 ppb(v) respectively. The performance achieved with this material are comparable to some commercial carbons, even if some more optimized and selective materials show better results especially for the removal of sulfur compounds.

    Abstract The very low heating load of deep renovated buildings following standards such as EnerPHit, and the limited space in renovation create the need for compact heating systems. An innovative heating and ventilation system - consisting of an exhaust air to supply air heat pump combined with a heat recovery ventilation unit, both integrated into a prefabricated timber frame facade - was developed and installed in a flat during the renovation of a multi-family house in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The system and the flat were monitored for the complete heating season 2016/2017. This paper presents: (a) an analysis of the monitoring data, (b) the development and validation of the models of the system and the flat, and (c) the results of the dynamic simulations that were performed for further system optimisation. Inside the flat, good thermal comfort and indoor air quality conditions were achieved. The monitored SPF of the system was 2.8. Simulation results showed that with the optimised system and control, there can be an electricity savings of 25%. The developed system has the potential to be cost-effective due to prefabrication and low heating capacity. It represents a compact solution with moderate energy performance, appropriate for minimally disruptive renovations.

An innovative heating and ventilation system - consisting of an exhaust air to supply air heat pump combined with a heat recovery ventilation unit, both integrated into a prefabricated timber frame facade - was developed and installed in a flat during the renovation of a multi-family house in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The system and the flat were monitored for the complete heating season 2016/2017. This paper presents: (a) an analysis of the monitoring data, (b) the development and validation of the models of the system and the flat, and (c) the results of the dynamic simulations that were performed for further system optimisation. Inside the flat, good thermal comfort and indoor air quality conditions were achieved. The monitored SPF of the system was 2.8. Simulation results showed that with the optimised system and control, there can be an electricity savings of 25%. The developed system has the potential to be cost-effective due to prefabrication and low heating capacity. It represents a compact solution with moderate energy performance, appropriate for minimally disruptive renovations.

    This paper presents the results of the activities related to the subtask “Building and process optimization” of the IEA SHC Task 65. The main topic of this activity was the integration of solar cooling in retrofitted HVAC systems. Based on the current conventional HVAC systems, the integration may present difficulties concerning cold distribution and refrigerants. Cold supply systems can also reduce airflow in air-based systems and enhance thermal comfort in buildings. The best technical actions for specific scenarios were mentioned considering both technical and economic aspects. Unfortunately, not all the analyses that were planned provide useful data. Results show that there are few recent projects that consider the application of solar cooling systems in buildings and most of them are based on simulation. Moreover, not much data about the characteristics of the buildings (envelope, other cooling systems, comfort conditions, etc.) are reported in the studies. This is because many of them are more focused on the plants’ configurations, and the performance of the different plants is in general assessed by testing the prototype in a single room. Despite this, the information provided could be used as baseline cases in order to study the potential energy savings achievable by applying solar cooling systems.

    Material flow analysis is used to quantify the material turnover of a defined system, relying on data about flows and stocks from different sources with varying quality. In this study, the belief that the available data are representative for the value of interest is expressed via fuzzy sets, specifying the possible range of values of the data. A possibilistic framework for data reconciliation in MFA was developed and applied to a case study on wood flows in Austria. The framework consists of a data characterisation and a reconciliation step. Membership functions are defined based on the collected data and data quality assessment. Possible ranges and consistency levels (quantifying the agreement between input data and balance constraints) are determined. The framework allows problematic data and model weaknesses to be identified and can be used to illustrate the trade-off between confidence in the data and the consistency levels of resulting material flows.

    Material flow analysis is used to quantify the material turnover of a defined system, relying on data about flows and stocks from different sources with varying quality. In this study, the belief that the available data are representative for the value of interest is expressed via fuzzy sets, specifying the possible range of values of the data. A possibilistic framework for data reconciliation in MFA was developed and applied to a case study on wood flows in Austria. The framework consists of a data characterisation and a reconciliation step. Membership functions are defined based on the collected data and data quality assessment. Possible ranges and consistency levels (quantifying the agreement between input data and balance constraints) are determined. The framework allows problematic data and model weaknesses to be identified and can be used to illustrate the trade-off between confidence in the data and the consistency levels of resulting material flows.

    Abstract A mixing strategy capable of handling a suitable agitation within digester tanks is a necessity in order to assure continuous contact of substrates and degraders inside bioreactors. As mixing is an energy demanding process, the energy needed for a proper mixing contributes to overall efficiency of digesters. In the current study, the aim is to assess the incorporation of biogas bubble creation into the mixing of anaerobic digesters of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) tanks with and without an external vertical mixer, in order to analyze the possibility of considering bubble creation as an imperative factor in the mixing scenario. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) prepares the opportunity to simulate the creation biogas bubbles within a stirred tank of anaerobic digester, in a combination of an Eulerian and Lagrangian platform. The amount of dead volume, average velocity, velocity gradient and bubble particle trajectories are analyzed and discussed. Our key findings are as follows: biogas bubble creation contributes to the reduction of dead volume inside the digester tank, once there is no external rotating mixing, or once the amount of mixer rotation speed is low. However, either in low or in high mixer rotation speed the biogas bubble creation does not have a considerable effect of velocity gradient.

    Abstract A mixing strategy capable of handling a suitable agitation within digester tanks is a necessity in order to assure continuous contact of substrates and degraders inside bioreactors. As mixing is an energy demanding process, the energy needed for a proper mixing contributes to overall efficiency of digesters. In the current study, the aim is to assess the incorporation of biogas bubble creation into the mixing of anaerobic digesters of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) tanks with and without an external vertical mixer, in order to analyze the possibility of considering bubble creation as an imperative factor in the mixing scenario.     In vehicles that are parked, no ventilation and/or air conditioning takes place. If a vehicle is exposed to direct solar radiation, an immediate temperature rise occurs. The high cabin air temperature can threaten children and animals that are left unattended in vehicles. In the USA, lethal heat strokes cause a mean death rate of 37 children per year. In addition, temperature-sensitive goods (e.g. drugs in ambulances and veterinary vehicles) can be adversely affected by high temperatures. To calculate the rise of the cabin air temperature, a dynamic model was developed that is driven by only three parameters, available at standard meteorological stations: air temperature, global radiation and wind velocity. The transition from the initial temperature to the constant equilibrium temperature depends strongly on the configuration of the vehicle, more specifically on insulation, window area and transmission of the glass, as well as on the meteorological conditions. The comparison of the model with empirical data showed good agreement. The model output can be applied to assess the heat load of children and animals as well as temperature-sensitive goods, which are transported and/or stored in a vehicle.

    Guiding a transition to low carbon electricity requires a good understanding of the substitution of old by new technologies in the electricity industry. With the aim of explaining historical change from coal to gas in the British electricity industry, we develop a formal model of technological change, where energy technologies diffuse through the construction of new power plants. We considered two model versions: with rational and boundedly rational investors. In each model version, we look at the causal relations between price and output setting mechanisms, fuel and labour use, and investment decisions for different institutional arrangements. We quantify model parameters on data for the United Kingdom. We find that the version of the model with rational investors is capable of replicating well core features of UK electricity history. This includes a rapid diffusion of gas in electricity production, the evolution of the average size of newly installed plants, and a high percentage of electricity sales covered by (forward) contracts-for-difference.     Guiding a transition to low carbon electricity requires a good understanding of the substitution of old by new technologies in the electricity industry. With the aim of explaining historical change from coal to gas in the British electricity industry, we develop a formal model of technological change, where energy technologies diffuse through the construction of new power plants. We considered two model versions: with rational and boundedly rational investors. In each model version, we look at the causal relations between price and output setting mechanisms, fuel and labour use, and investment decisions for different institutional arrangements. We quantify model parameters on data for the United Kingdom. We find that the version of the model with rational investors is capable of replicating well core features of UK electricity history. This includes a rapid diffusion of gas in electricity production, the evolution of the average size of newly installed plants, and a high percentage of electricity sales covered by (forward) contracts-for-difference. In this model setting, nuclear and renewable energies have no chance to diffuse on the market.     Abstract The public and the private sectors play fundamental roles in mobilizing capital to achieve the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development. In particular, developing countries can benefit from foreign direct investment (FDI) as a source of external financing in the private sector. This study aims to investigate whether FDI contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. We analyse a sample of 44 African countries regarding their SDG scores and apply a multivariate analysis and an ordered probit model. Our results indicate that the presence of foreign investors positively influences SDG scores. However, although FDI has a positive impact in areas such as basic infrastructure, clean water, sanitation, and renewable energy, some adverse environmental consequences may occur for host countries. In fact, the relationship between FDI and the probability of achieving SDG13 (Climate action) is negative. This study contributes to the literature on sustainable development and can be useful for decision-makers in developing investment plans to support the achievement of SDGs. Furthermore, we provide evidence of a positive influence of FDI on the SDGs, which might encourage further investments in Africa.

    The removal of trace compounds contained in a biogas from the dry anaerobic digestion of organic waste was accomplished. The resulting data were monitored online with a direct injection mass spectrometry technique. Biochar from the pyrolysis of recovered wood waste was used as sorbent material. This material was selected to demonstrate the usefulness of recovered waste for the energy production purposes. Biochar withstands the removal of 2-butanone (158.8 mg/g), toluene (140.1 mg/g) and limonene (64 mg/g) better compared to sulfur (H2S 1.05 mg/g) and siloxane (D3, 1.28 mg/g) compounds. Hydrogen sulfide was the most abundant sulfur compound with the average concentration about 24 ppm(v). The tested sorbent material was able to withstand the H2S and siloxane concentration for almost 30 h with the biogas pilot plant conditions before toachieve the limit value for SOFC applications, 1 ppm(v) and 150 ppb(v) respectively. The performance achieved with this material are comparable to some commercial carbons, even if some more optimized and selective materials show better results especially for the removal of sulfur compounds.

    The removal of trace compounds contained in a biogas from the dry anaerobic digestion of organic waste was accomplished. The resulting data were monitored online with a direct injection mass spectrometry technique. Biochar from the pyrolysis of recovered wood waste was used as sorbent material. This material was selected to demonstrate the usefulness of recovered waste for the energy production purposes. Biochar withstands the removal of 2-butanone (158.8 mg/g), toluene (140.1 mg/g) and limonene (64 mg/g) better compared to sulfur (H2S 1.05 mg/g) and siloxane (D3, 1.28 mg/g) compounds. Hydrogen sulfide was the most abundant sulfur compound with the average concentration about 24 ppm(v). The tested sorbent material was able to withstand the H2S and siloxane concentration for almost 30 h with the biogas pilot plant conditions before toachieve the limit value for SOFC applications, 1 ppm(v) and 150 ppb(v) respectively. The performance achieved with this material are comparable to some commercial carbons, even if some more optimized and selective materials show better results especially for the removal of sulfur compounds.

    Abstract The very low heating load of deep renovated buildings following standards such as EnerPHit, and the limited space in renovation create the need for compact heating systems. An innovative heating and ventilation system - consisting of an exhaust air to supply air heat pump combined with a heat recovery ventilation unit, both integrated into a prefabricated timber frame facade - was developed and installed in a flat during the renovation of a multi-family house in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The system and the flat were monitored for the complete heating season 2016/2017. This paper presents: (a) an analysis of the monitoring data, (b) the development and validation of the models of the system and the flat, and (c) the results of the dynamic simulations that were performed for further system optimisation. Inside the flat, good thermal comfort and indoor air quality conditions were achieved. The monitored SPF of the system was 2.8. Simulation results showed that with the optimised system and control, there can be an electricity savings of 25%. The developed system has the potential to be cost-effective due to prefabrication and low heating capacity. It represents a compact solution with moderate energy performance, appropriate for minimally disruptive renovations.

    This paper presents the results of the activities related to the subtask “Building and process optimization” of the IEA SHC Task 65. The main topic of this activity was the integration of solar cooling in retrofitted HVAC systems. Based on the current conventional HVAC systems, the integration may present difficulties concerning cold distribution and refrigerants. Cold supply systems can also reduce airflow in air-based systems and enhance thermal comfort in buildings. The best technical actions for specific scenarios were mentioned considering both technical and economic aspects. Unfortunately, not all the analyses that were planned provide useful data. Results show that there are few recent projects that consider the application of solar cooling systems in buildings and most of them are based on simulation. Moreover, not much data about the characteristics of the buildings (envelope, other cooling systems, comfort conditions, etc.) are reported in the studies. This is because many of them are more focused on the plants’ configurations, and the performance of the different plants is in general assessed by testing the prototype in a single room. Despite this, the information provided could be used as baseline cases in order to study the potential energy savings achievable by applying solar cooling systems.
