Sorrell; Peter M. van Bodegom; Rien Aerts; Annelies Oosthoek;In wetlands, a distinct zonation of plant species composition occurs along moisture gradients, due to differential flooding tolerance of the species involved. However, "flooding" comprises two important, distinct stressors (soil oxygen demand [SOD] and partial submergence) that affect plant survival and growth. To investigate how these two flooding stressors affect plant performance, we executed a factorial experiment (water depth x SOD) for six plant species of nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor conditions, occurring along a moisture gradient in Dutch dune slacks. Physiological, growth, and biomass responses to changed oxygen availability were quantified for all species. The responses were consistent with field zonation, but the two stressors affected species differently. Increased SOD increased root oxygen deprivation, as indicated by either raised porosity or increased alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity in roots of flood-intolerant species (Calamagrostis epigejos and Carex arenaria). While SOD affected root functioning, partial submergence tended more to reduce photosynthesis (as shown both by gas exchange and 13C assimilation), leaf dark respiration, 13C partitioning from shoots to roots, and growth of these species. These processes were especially affected if the root oxygen supply was depleted by a combination of flooding and increased SOD. In contrast, the most flood-tolerant species (Juncus subnodulosus and Typha latifolia) were unaffected by any treatment and maintained high internal oxygen concentrations at the shoot : root junction and low root ADH activity in all treatments. For these species, the internal oxygen transport capacity was well in excess of what was needed to maintain aerobic metabolism across all treatments, although there was some evidence for effects of SOD on their nitrogen partitioning (as indicated by 865N values) and photosynthesis. Two species intermediate in flooding tolerance (Carex nigra and Schoenus nigricans) responded more idiosyncratically, with different parameters responding to different treatments. These results show that partial submergence and soil flooding are two very different stressors to which species respond in different ways, and that their effects on physiology, survival, and growth are interactive. Understanding species zonation with water regimes can be improved by a better appreciation of how these factors affect plant metabolism independently and interactively.

The etiology of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), like Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), remains unclear. A recurrent theme is a failure to down-regulate a local hyperreactive immune response. Autoimmunity plays a role as circulating antibodies reactive against a protein in colonic epithelial cells are found in patients with ulcerative colitis (Takahasi et al., 1990). Local non-lymphoid cells like macrophages, dendritic cells and epithelial cells could be important in IBD in the pathogenesis and in the uptake and processing of antigen in affected tissue, leading to secondary bacterial infection.

This light harvesting antenna has a distinct pigment composition and binds chlorophyll a (Chl-a), fucoxanthin and chlorophyll c (Chl-c) molecules in a 4:4:1 ratio. We find that upon excitation of fucoxanthin to its S2 state, a significant amount of excitation energy is transferred rapidly to Chl-a. The ensuing dynamics illustrate the presence of a complex energy transfer network that also involves energy transfer from the unrelaxed or 'hot' intermediates. Chl-c to Chl-a energy transfer occurs on a timescale of a 100 fs. We observe no significant spectral evolution in the Chl-a region of the spectrum. We have applied global and target analysis to model the measured excited state dynamics and estimate the spectra of the states involved; the energy transfer network is discussed in relation to the pigment organization of the FCP complex.

AbstractExtreme precipitation and drought events are predicted to become more intense and more frequent over the Amazon rainforest. Because changes in forest dynamics could prompt strong feedback loops to the global climate, it is of crucial importance to gain insight into the response of tropical forests to these recurring extreme climatic events. Here, we evaluated the Amazon forest stability (resistance and resilience) to drought in the context of past dry and wet climatic events using MODIS EVI satellite imagery and cumulative water deficit anomalies. We observed large spatial differences in the occurrence of extreme climatic events from 1980 to 2019, with an increase in drought frequency in the central and northern Amazon and drought intensity in the southern Amazon basin. An increasing trend in the occurrence of wet events was found in the western, southern, and eastern Amazon. Furthermore, we found significant legacy effects of previous climatic events on the forest drought response. An extreme drought closely preceding another drought decreased forest resilience, whereas the occurrence of a recent drier‐than‐usual event also decreased the forest resistance to later droughts. Both wetter‐than‐usual and extreme wet events preceding an extreme drought increased the resistance of the forest, and with similar effects sizes as dry events, indicating that wet and dry events have similarly sized legacy effects on the drought response of tropical forests. Our results indicate that the predicted increase in drought frequency and intensity can have negative consequences for the functioning of the Amazon forest. However, more frequent wet periods in combination with these droughts could counteract their negative impact. Finally, we also found that more stable forests according to the alternative stable states theory are also more resistant and resilient to individual droughts, showing a positive relationship between the equilibrium and non‐equilibrium stability dynamics.

Southeast Australia experienced intensive and geographically extensive wildfires during the 2019-2020 summer season1,2. The fires released substantial amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere3. However, existing emission estimates based on fire inventories are uncertain4, and vary by up to a factor of four for this event. Here we constrain emission estimates with the help of satellite observations of carbon monoxide5, an analytical Bayesian inversion6 and observed ratios between emitted carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide7. We estimate emissions of carbon dioxide to be 715 teragrams (range 517-867) from November 2019 to January 2020. This is more than twice the estimate derived by five different fire inventories8-12, and broadly consistent with estimates based on a bottom-up bootstrap analysis of this fire episode13. Although fires occur regularly in the savannas in northern Australia, the recent episodes were extremely large in scale and intensity, burning unusually large areas of eucalyptus forest in the southeast13. The fires were driven partly by climate change14,15, making better-constrained emission estimates particularly important. This is because the build-up of atmospheric carbon dioxide may become increasingly dependent on fire-driven climate-carbon feedbacks, as highlighted by this event16.

However, this also implies the use of more sustainable practices to reduce negative environmental impacts currently associated with this industry, including the use of wild resources, destruction of natural ecosystems, eutrophication of effluent receiving bodies, impacts due to inadequate medication practices, among others. Using multi-species systems, such as integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, allows to produce economically important species while reducing some of these aquaculture concerns, through biomitigation of aquaculture wastes and reduction of diseases outbreaks, for example. Applying mathematical models to these systems is crucial to control and understand the interactions between species, maximizing productivity, with important environmental and economic benefits. Here, the application of some equations and models available in the literature, regarding basic parameters, is discussed – population dynamics, growth, waste production, and filtering rate – when considering the description and optimization of a theoretical integrated multi-trophic aquaculture operation composed by three trophic levels.

Andrizhiyevskaya; Rienk van Grondelle;The emission spectra of CP47-RC and core complexes of Photosystem II (PS II) were measured at different temperatures and excitation wavelengths in order to establish the origin of the emission and the role of the core antenna in the energy transfer and charge separation processes in PS II. Both types of particles reveal strong dependences of spectral shape and yield on temperature. The results indicate that the well-known F-695 emission at 77 K arises from excitations that are trapped on a red-absorbing CP47 chlorophyll, whereas the F-685 nm emission at 77 K arises from excitations that are transferred slowly from 683 nm states in CP47 and CP43 to the RC, where they are trapped by charge separation. We conclude that F-695 at 77 K originates from the low-energy part of the inhomogeneous distribution of the 690 nm absorbing chlorophyll of CP47, while at 4 K the fluorescence originates from the complete distribution of the 690 nm chlorophyll of CP47 and from the low-energy part of the inhomogeneous distribution of one or more CP43 chlorophylls.

Our current view about the relationship between metals and bacteria in marine sediments might be biased because most studies only use ex situ approaches to quantify metals. The aim of the present research was to compare ex situ and in situ methods of metal measurement (DET and DGT--diffusive equilibration or diffusive gradients in thin-films) and relate the results with two commonly used microbiological variables (bacterial biomass and bacterial diversity as revealed by DGGE). No previous studies have used such in situ approaches in microbial ecology. For biomass and most of the investigated trace metals (Ag, Cd, Sn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, and Al) no significant correlations were found. The exceptions were Fe, Mn, Co, and As which behave like micronutrients. For bacterial diversity, no relevant relationships were found. We conclude that in situ methods are more adapted tools for microbial ecologists but that ex situ approaches are still necessary.

The expander used here is a scroll compressor modified to work as an expander. It is characterized in two experimental setups using air and ammonia as working fluids. The paper studies how the main operating variables (supply pressure and temperature, pressure ratio, rotational speed and lubrication) influence the performance of the scroll expander. A semi-empirical model is proposed to determine the scroll expander performance. This model uses some semi-empirical parameters (such as built-in volume ratio, leakage area and mechanical losses), obtained through experimentation, to calculate the mechanical power, supply mass flow rate and exhaust temperature. Using this semi-empirical model, the deviations in the calculated mechanical power, exhaust temperature and supply mass flow rate are ±9%, ±4 K and ±5% Hz.

Recently, Baratta and Solomonow J. Biomechanics 24, 109-116 (1991) studied the effect of tendon on muscle-tendon complex behavior in cat tibialis anterior (TA) muscle. This was done by determining the relation between neural stimulation and muscle force in a dynamic isometric experiment, both before and after the removal of the distal tendon. From their results, Baratta and Solomonow concluded that in isometric and concentric contractions at mid-range force levels, tendon behaves as a rigid force conductor. This conclusion is in conflict with literature in which several functions are attributed to the elastic behavior of the series elastic element (SEE), of which tendon is the major part. The present study investigates the expected generalizability of their findings, by simulating the experiments using a straightforward Hill-type muscle model. First, model predictions are shown to be in line with the experimental results on cat TA: in dynamic isometric experiments at mid-range force levels, the effect of SEE removal is indeed negligible. Second, the effect of SEE removal is predicted to vary largely among muscles. Third, the most important determinants of the effect of SEE removal in dynamic isometric contractions are shown to be maximum fiber shortening velocity and the ratio of SEE slack length to fibre optimum length.

Sorrell; Peter M. van Bodegom; Rien Aerts; Annelies Oosthoek;In wetlands, a distinct zonation of plant species composition occurs along moisture gradients, due to differential flooding tolerance of the species involved. However, "flooding" comprises two important, distinct stressors (soil oxygen demand [SOD] and partial submergence) that affect plant survival and growth. To investigate how these two flooding stressors affect plant performance, we executed a factorial experiment (water depth x SOD) for six plant species of nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor conditions, occurring along a moisture gradient in Dutch dune slacks. Physiological, growth, and biomass responses to changed oxygen availability were quantified for all species. The responses were consistent with field zonation, but the two stressors affected species differently. Increased SOD increased root oxygen deprivation, as indicated by either raised porosity or increased alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity in roots of flood-intolerant species (Calamagrostis epigejos and Carex arenaria). While SOD affected root functioning, partial submergence tended more to reduce photosynthesis (as shown both by gas exchange and 13C assimilation), leaf dark respiration, 13C partitioning from shoots to roots, and growth of these species. These processes were especially affected if the root oxygen supply was depleted by a combination of flooding and increased SOD. In contrast, the most flood-tolerant species (Juncus subnodulosus and Typha latifolia) were unaffected by any treatment and maintained high internal oxygen concentrations at the shoot : root junction and low root ADH activity in all treatments. For these species, the internal oxygen transport capacity was well in excess of what was needed to maintain aerobic metabolism across all treatments, although there was some evidence for effects of SOD on their nitrogen partitioning (as indicated by 865N values) and photosynthesis. Two species intermediate in flooding tolerance (Carex nigra and Schoenus nigricans) responded more idiosyncratically, with different parameters responding to different treatments. These results show that partial submergence and soil flooding are two very different stressors to which species respond in different ways, and that their effects on physiology, survival, and growth are interactive. Understanding species zonation with water regimes can be improved by a better appreciation of how these factors affect plant metabolism independently and interactively.

The etiology of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), like Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), remains unclear. A recurrent theme is a failure to down-regulate a local hyperreactive immune response. Autoimmunity plays a role as circulating antibodies reactive against a protein in colonic epithelial cells are found in patients with ulcerative colitis (Takahasi et al., 1990). Local non-lymphoid cells like macrophages, dendritic cells and epithelial cells could be important in IBD in the pathogenesis and in the uptake and processing of antigen in affected tissue, leading to secondary bacterial infection.

This light harvesting antenna has a distinct pigment composition and binds chlorophyll a (Chl-a), fucoxanthin and chlorophyll c (Chl-c) molecules in a 4:4:1 ratio. We find that upon excitation of fucoxanthin to its S2 state, a significant amount of excitation energy is transferred rapidly to Chl-a. The ensuing dynamics illustrate the presence of a complex energy transfer network that also involves energy transfer from the unrelaxed or 'hot' intermediates. Chl-c to Chl-a energy transfer occurs on a timescale of a 100 fs. We observe no significant spectral evolution in the Chl-a region of the spectrum. We have applied global and target analysis to model the measured excited state dynamics and estimate the spectra of the states involved; the energy transfer network is discussed in relation to the pigment organization of the FCP complex.

AbstractExtreme precipitation and drought events are predicted to become more intense and more frequent over the Amazon rainforest. Because changes in forest dynamics could prompt strong feedback loops to the global climate, it is of crucial importance to gain insight into the response of tropical forests to these recurring extreme climatic events. Here, we evaluated the Amazon forest stability (resistance and resilience) to drought in the context of past dry and wet climatic events using MODIS EVI satellite imagery and cumulative water deficit anomalies. We observed large spatial differences in the occurrence of extreme climatic events from 1980 to 2019, with an increase in drought frequency in the central and northern Amazon and drought intensity in the southern Amazon basin. An increasing trend in the occurrence of wet events was found in the western, southern, and eastern Amazon. Furthermore, we found significant legacy effects of previous climatic events on the forest drought response. An extreme drought closely preceding another drought decreased forest resilience, whereas the occurrence of a recent drier‐than‐usual event also decreased the forest resistance to later droughts. Both wetter‐than‐usual and extreme wet events preceding an extreme drought increased the resistance of the forest, and with similar effects sizes as dry events, indicating that wet and dry events have similarly sized legacy effects on the drought response of tropical forests. Our results indicate that the predicted increase in drought frequency and intensity can have negative consequences for the functioning of the Amazon forest. However, more frequent wet periods in combination with these droughts could counteract their negative impact. Finally, we also found that more stable forests according to the alternative stable states theory are also more resistant and resilient to individual droughts, showing a positive relationship between the equilibrium and non‐equilibrium stability dynamics.

Southeast Australia experienced intensive and geographically extensive wildfires during the 2019-2020 summer season1,2. The fires released substantial amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere3. However, existing emission estimates based on fire inventories are uncertain4, and vary by up to a factor of four for this event. Here we constrain emission estimates with the help of satellite observations of carbon monoxide5, an analytical Bayesian inversion6 and observed ratios between emitted carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide7. We estimate emissions of carbon dioxide to be 715 teragrams (range 517-867) from November 2019 to January 2020. This is more than twice the estimate derived by five different fire inventories8-12, and broadly consistent with estimates based on a bottom-up bootstrap analysis of this fire episode13. Although fires occur regularly in the savannas in northern Australia, the recent episodes were extremely large in scale and intensity, burning unusually large areas of eucalyptus forest in the southeast13. The fires were driven partly by climate change14,15, making better-constrained emission estimates particularly important. This is because the build-up of atmospheric carbon dioxide may become increasingly dependent on fire-driven climate-carbon feedbacks, as highlighted by this event16.

Using multi-species systems, such as integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, allows to produce economically important species while reducing some of these aquaculture concerns, through biomitigation of aquaculture wastes and reduction of diseases outbreaks, for example. Applying mathematical models to these systems is crucial to control and understand the interactions between species, maximizing productivity, with important environmental and economic benefits. Here, the application of some equations and models available in the literature, regarding basic parameters, is discussed – population dynamics, growth, waste production, and filtering rate – when considering the description and optimization of a theoretical integrated multi-trophic aquaculture operation composed by three trophic levels.

Both types of particles reveal strong dependences of spectral shape and yield on temperature. The results indicate that the well-known F-695 emission at 77 K arises from excitations that are trapped on a red-absorbing CP47 chlorophyll, whereas the F-685 nm emission at 77 K arises from excitations that are transferred slowly from 683 nm states in CP47 and CP43 to the RC, where they are trapped by charge separation. We conclude that F-695 at 77 K originates from the low-energy part of the inhomogeneous distribution of the 690 nm absorbing chlorophyll of CP47, while at 4 K the fluorescence originates from the complete distribution of the 690 nm chlorophyll of CP47 and from the low-energy part of the inhomogeneous distribution of one or more CP43 chlorophylls.

Our current view about the relationship between metals and bacteria in marine sediments might be biased because most studies only use ex situ approaches to quantify metals. The aim of the present research was to compare ex situ and in situ methods of metal measurement (DET and DGT--diffusive equilibration or diffusive gradients in thin-films) and relate the results with two commonly used microbiological variables (bacterial biomass and bacterial diversity as revealed by DGGE). No previous studies have used such in situ approaches in microbial ecology. For biomass and most of the investigated trace metals (Ag, Cd, Sn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, and Al) no significant correlations were found. The exceptions were Fe, Mn, Co, and As which behave like micronutrients. For bacterial diversity, no relevant relationships were found. We conclude that in situ methods are more adapted tools for microbial ecologists but that ex situ approaches are still necessary.

The expander used here is a scroll compressor modified to work as an expander. It is characterized in two experimental setups using air and ammonia as working fluids. The paper studies how the main operating variables (supply pressure and temperature, pressure ratio, rotational speed and lubrication) influence the performance of the scroll expander. A semi-empirical model is proposed to determine the scroll expander performance. This model uses some semi-empirical parameters (such as built-in volume ratio, leakage area and mechanical losses), obtained through experimentation, to calculate the mechanical power, supply mass flow rate and exhaust temperature. Using this semi-empirical model, the deviations in the calculated mechanical power, exhaust temperature and supply mass flow rate are ±9%, ±4 K and ±5% Hz.

Recently, Baratta and Solomonow J. Biomechanics 24, 109-116 (1991) studied the effect of tendon on muscle-tendon complex behavior in cat tibialis anterior (TA) muscle. This was done by determining the relation between neural stimulation and muscle force in a dynamic isometric experiment, both before and after the removal of the distal tendon. From their results, Baratta and Solomonow concluded that in isometric and concentric contractions at mid-range force levels, tendon behaves as a rigid force conductor. This conclusion is in conflict with literature in which several functions are attributed to the elastic behavior of the series elastic element (SEE), of which tendon is the major part. The present study investigates the expected generalizability of their findings, by simulating the experiments using a straightforward Hill-type muscle model. First, model predictions are shown to be in line with the experimental results on cat TA: in dynamic isometric experiments at mid-range force levels, the effect of SEE removal is indeed negligible. Second, the effect of SEE removal is predicted to vary largely among muscles. Third, the most important determinants of the effect of SEE removal in dynamic isometric contractions are shown to be maximum fiber shortening velocity and the ratio of SEE slack length to fibre optimum length.
