Without a complete process model for verification, however, the performance of hybrid LCA remains unclear. Here, using a counterexample we show that hybrid LCA does not necessarily provide more accurate results than process-based LCA, simply because the aggregation of heterogeneous processes in IO models may introduce more errors. In so doing, we prove that only when IO-based LCA and process-based LCA have the same level of detail would they yield the same results. Whether hybrid LCA provides more accurate estimates depends on whether the IO model introduced serves as an adequate proxy for the missing products as opposed to if they were estimated by a complete process model. The use of a highly-aggregated IO model runs the risk of overestimation, and could result in a larger relative error than the truncation error resulting from an incomplete process model. Our study seeks to provide a balanced view of hybrid LCA, and our findings offer important insights for future hybrid LCA studies to improve the accuracy and realm of applicability of the approach.

Di Blasi; Markus Broström;Devolatilization and oxidation kinetics of torrefied wood have been studied by evaluating thermogravimetric curves measured in nitrogen and air at various heating rates. Samples consist of Norway spruce wood chips torrefied at several process temperatures and residence times. Data about untreated wood have also been obtained for comparison. Measured curves are well predicted by means of a five-reaction mechanism, consisting of three devolatilization reactions for the pseudo-components hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin and, in air, of two additional reactions for char devolatilization and combustion. The torrefaction pre-treatment only requires model modifications in the amounts of volatiles generated from the decomposition of pseudo-components, indicating that only their relative percentages and not their reactivities are modified. On the other hand, a slightly different thermal stability is found for the char generated from torrefied wood, which results in higher activation energy and lower reaction order for the oxidation step. Hence torrefaction conditions can affect the subsequent conversion characteristics of the char product.

To respond to this need, in 2012 the European Space Agency (ESA) released the first multi-decadal, global satellite-observed soil moisture (SM) dataset as part of its Climate Change Initiative (CCI) program. This product, named ESA CCI SM, combines various single-sensor active and passive microwave soil moisture products into three harmonised products: a merged ACTIVE, a merged PASSIVE, and a COMBINED active + passive microwave product. Compared to the first product release, the latest version of ESA CCI SM includes a large number of enhancements, incorporates various new satellite sensors, and extends its temporal coverage to the period 1978–2015. In this study, we first provide a comprehensive overview of the characteristics, evolution, and performance of the ESA CCI SM products. Based on original research and a review of existing literature we show that the product quality has steadily increased with each successive release and that the merged products generally outperform the single-sensor input products. Although ESA CCI SM generally agrees well with the spatial and temporal patterns estimated by land surface models and observed in-situ, we identify surface conditions (e.g., dense vegetation, organic soils) for which it still has large uncertainties. Second, capitalising on the results of > 100 research studies that made use of the ESA CCI SM data we provide a synopsis of how it has contributed to improved process understanding in the following Earth system domains: climate variability and change, land-atmosphere interactions, global biogeochemical cycles and ecology, hydrological and land surface modelling, drought applications, and meteorology. While in some disciplines the use of ESA CCI SM is already widespread (e.g. in the evaluation of model soil moisture states) in others (e.g. in numerical weather prediction or flood forecasting) it is still in its infancy. The latter is partly related to current shortcomings of the product, e.g., the lack of near-real-time availability and data gaps in time and space. This study discloses the discrepancies between current ESA CCI SM product characteristics and the preferred characteristics of long-term satellite soil moisture products as outlined by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), and provides important directions for future ESA CCI SM product improvements to bridge these gaps.

AbstractIsoprene and monoterpenes (MTs) are among the most abundant and reactive volatile organic compounds produced by plants (biogenic volatile organic compounds). We conducted a meta‐analysis to quantify the mean effect of environmental factors associated to climate change (warming, drought, elevated CO2, and O3) on the emission of isoprene and MTs. Results indicated that all single factors except warming inhibited isoprene emission. When subsets of data collected in experiments run under similar change of a given environmental factor were compared, isoprene and photosynthesis responded negatively to elevated O3 (−8% and −10%, respectively) and drought (−15% and −42%), and in opposite ways to elevated CO2 (−23% and +55%) and warming (+53% and −23%, respectively). Effects on MTs emission were usually not significant, with the exceptions of a significant stimulation caused by warming (+39%) and by elevated O3 (limited to O3‐insensitive plants, and evergreen species with storage organs). Our results clearly highlight individual effects of environmental factors on isoprene and MT emissions, and an overall uncoupling between these secondary metabolites produced by the same methylerythritol 4‐phosphate pathway. Future results from manipulative experiments and long‐term observations may help untangling the interactive effects of these factors and filling gaps featured in the current meta‐analysis.

However, most of them suffer from high computation cost and cannot satisfy the requirement of real applications. In this paper, we propose a novel discord discovery algorithm BitClusterDiscord which is based on bit representation clustering. Firstly, we use PAA (Piecewise Aggregate Approximation) bit serialization to segment time series, so as to capture the main variation characteristic of time series and avoid the influence of noise. Secondly, we present an improved K-Medoids clustering algorithm to merge several patterns with similar variation behaviors into a common cluster. Finally, based on bit representation clustering, we design two pruning strategies and propose an effective algorithm for time series discord discovery. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that the proposed approach can not only effectively find discord of time series, but also greatly improve the computational efficiency. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Cabeza; Karim Menoufi;Abstract Among the research activities that aim at reducing energy consumption in buildings and their impact on the environment is an experimental set-up that has several house-shaped cubicles constructed in Puigverd de Lleida (Spain). Assessing the environmental impact through studying the manufacturing, operational and disposal phases of these cubicles have been done in previous research. The objective of this paper is to investigate the use of esters as PCM in order to estimate its environmental impact in building envelopes in comparison to the use of paraffin or salt hydrates through a theoretical study. The evaluation of the environmental impact of this type of PCM material is conducted using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) based on the Eco-indicator 99 method. It is found that the impact of ester used as PCM presents slightly better results than the case of using salt hydrates during the manufacturing impact. On the other hand, the use of salt hydrates or ester as PCM in the cubicles results in an impact reduction of 9% and 10.5% respectively, compared to the case of using paraffin.

Belowground competition will possibly increase under limited soil resources. Here, we investigate whether low resource availability (including shallow soil, low water availability, and shallow soil and low water availability combined) stimulates the competition between grasses with different root systems in karst soil, by assessing their growth response, biomass allocation, and morphological plasticity. In a full three-way factorial blocked design of soil depth by water availability by neighbor identity, we grew Festuca arundinacea (deep-rooted) and Lolium perenne (shallow-rooted) under normal versus shallow soil depth, high versus low water availability, and in monoculture (conspecific neighbor) versus mixture (neighbor of the other species). The key results were as follows: (1) total biomass and aboveground biomass in either of the species decreased with reduction of resources but were not affected by planting patterns (monoculture or mixture) even at low resource levels. (2) For F. arundinacea, root biomass, root mass fraction, total root length, and root volume were higher in mixture than in monoculture at high resource level (consistent with resource use complementarity), but lower in mixture than in monoculture at low resource levels (consistent with interspecific competition). In contrast for L. perenne, either at high or low resource level, these root traits had mostly similar values at both planting patterns. These results suggest that deep-rooted and shallow-rooted plant species can coexist in karst regions under current climatic regimes. Declining resources, due to shallow soil, a decrease in precipitation, or combined shallow soil and karst drought, increased the root competition between plants of deep-rooted and shallow-rooted species. The root systems of deep-rooted plants may be too small to get sufficient water and nutrients from dry, shallow soil, while shallow-rooted plants will maintain a dominant position with their already adaptive strategy in respect of root biomass allocation and root growth.

Noordover; Daan S. van Es; Shanmugam Thiyagarajan;AbstractBuilding blocks of isohexides extended by one carbon atom at the 2‐ or 5‐positions are now synthetically accessible by a convenient, selective, base‐catalyzed epimerization of the corresponding dinitriles. Kinetic experiments using the strong organic base 1,8‐diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec‐7‐ene (DBU) show that all three possible isohexide dinitrile isomers exist within a dynamic equilibrium. An epimerization mechanism based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations is proposed. Structural identification of all three possible isomers is based on NMR analysis and single crystal x‐ray crystallography. DFT calculations confirm that the observed crystal structures are indeed the lowest energy conformers of these isohexide derivatives.

Cogdell;Dispersed multipump-probe (PPP) spectroscopy was used to explore the role of saturation, annihilation, and structured pulses in recent coherent control experiments on the light-harvesting 2 complex from Rhodopseudomonas acidophila (Herek et al. Nature 2002, 417, 533). We discuss the complimentary aspects between the PPP technique and coherent control studies, in particular the ability to dissect complicated pulse structures and the utility in exploring incoherent mechanisms. With the aid of a simple multistate model involving only population dynamics, we illustrate how the optimized structured pulses may be explained in terms of an interplay between excited-state populations, saturation, and annihilation. Furthermore, we discuss the experimental conditions that are required for incoherent effects to contribute to control experimental signals, with particular emphasis on pulse intensities, and show that the optimization of a ratio of conservative signals (i.e., not modulated by external dynamics) is required to exclude saturation effects from coherent control studies.

Novoderezhkin; Rienk van Grondelle;We model the spectra (absorption and circular dichroism) and excitation dynamics in the B800 ring of the LH2 antenna complex from Rs. molischianum using different theoretical approaches, i.e., Förster theory, standard and modified versions of the Redfield theory, and the more versatile nonperturbative approach based on hierarchically coupled equations for the reduced density operator. We demonstrate that, although excitations in the B800 ring are localized due to disorder, thermal effects, and phonons, there are still sizable excitonic effects producing shift, narrowing, and asymmetry of the spectra. Moreover, the excitation dynamics reveals the presence of long-lived (up to 1 ps) non-oscillatory coherences between the exciton states maintained due to nonsecular population-to-coherence transfers. The sub-ps decay of the coherences is followed by slow motion of the excitation around the ring, producing equilibration of the site populations with a time constant of about 3-4 ps, which is slower than the B800 → B850 transfer. The exact solution obtained with the hierarchical equations is compared with other approaches, thus illustrating limitations of the Förster and Redfield pictures.

Without a complete process model for verification, however, the performance of hybrid LCA remains unclear. Here, using a counterexample we show that hybrid LCA does not necessarily provide more accurate results than process-based LCA, simply because the aggregation of heterogeneous processes in IO models may introduce more errors. In so doing, we prove that only when IO-based LCA and process-based LCA have the same level of detail would they yield the same results. Whether hybrid LCA provides more accurate estimates depends on whether the IO model introduced serves as an adequate proxy for the missing products as opposed to if they were estimated by a complete process model. The use of a highly-aggregated IO model runs the risk of overestimation, and could result in a larger relative error than the truncation error resulting from an incomplete process model. Our study seeks to provide a balanced view of hybrid LCA, and our findings offer important insights for future hybrid LCA studies to improve the accuracy and realm of applicability of the approach.

Di Blasi; Markus Broström;Devolatilization and oxidation kinetics of torrefied wood have been studied by evaluating thermogravimetric curves measured in nitrogen and air at various heating rates. Samples consist of Norway spruce wood chips torrefied at several process temperatures and residence times. Data about untreated wood have also been obtained for comparison. Measured curves are well predicted by means of a five-reaction mechanism, consisting of three devolatilization reactions for the pseudo-components hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin and, in air, of two additional reactions for char devolatilization and combustion. The torrefaction pre-treatment only requires model modifications in the amounts of volatiles generated from the decomposition of pseudo-components, indicating that only their relative percentages and not their reactivities are modified. On the other hand, a slightly different thermal stability is found for the char generated from torrefied wood, which results in higher activation energy and lower reaction order for the oxidation step. Hence torrefaction conditions can affect the subsequent conversion characteristics of the char product.

To respond to this need, in 2012 the European Space Agency (ESA) released the first multi-decadal, global satellite-observed soil moisture (SM) dataset as part of its Climate Change Initiative (CCI) program. This product, named ESA CCI SM, combines various single-sensor active and passive microwave soil moisture products into three harmonised products: a merged ACTIVE, a merged PASSIVE, and a COMBINED active + passive microwave product. Compared to the first product release, the latest version of ESA CCI SM includes a large number of enhancements, incorporates various new satellite sensors, and extends its temporal coverage to the period 1978–2015. In this study, we first provide a comprehensive overview of the characteristics, evolution, and performance of the ESA CCI SM products. Based on original research and a review of existing literature we show that the product quality has steadily increased with each successive release and that the merged products generally outperform the single-sensor input products. Although ESA CCI SM generally agrees well with the spatial and temporal patterns estimated by land surface models and observed in-situ, we identify surface conditions (e.g., dense vegetation, organic soils) for which it still has large uncertainties. Second, capitalising on the results of > 100 research studies that made use of the ESA CCI SM data we provide a synopsis of how it has contributed to improved process understanding in the following Earth system domains: climate variability and change, land-atmosphere interactions, global biogeochemical cycles and ecology, hydrological and land surface modelling, drought applications, and meteorology. While in some disciplines the use of ESA CCI SM is already widespread (e.g. in the evaluation of model soil moisture states) in others (e.g. in numerical weather prediction or flood forecasting) it is still in its infancy. The latter is partly related to current shortcomings of the product, e.g., the lack of near-real-time availability and data gaps in time and space. This study discloses the discrepancies between current ESA CCI SM product characteristics and the preferred characteristics of long-term satellite soil moisture products as outlined by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), and provides important directions for future ESA CCI SM product improvements to bridge these gaps.

AbstractIsoprene and monoterpenes (MTs) are among the most abundant and reactive volatile organic compounds produced by plants (biogenic volatile organic compounds). We conducted a meta‐analysis to quantify the mean effect of environmental factors associated to climate change (warming, drought, elevated CO2, and O3) on the emission of isoprene and MTs. Results indicated that all single factors except warming inhibited isoprene emission. When subsets of data collected in experiments run under similar change of a given environmental factor were compared, isoprene and photosynthesis responded negatively to elevated O3 (−8% and −10%, respectively) and drought (−15% and −42%), and in opposite ways to elevated CO2 (−23% and +55%) and warming (+53% and −23%, respectively). Effects on MTs emission were usually not significant, with the exceptions of a significant stimulation caused by warming (+39%) and by elevated O3 (limited to O3‐insensitive plants, and evergreen species with storage organs). Our results clearly highlight individual effects of environmental factors on isoprene and MT emissions, and an overall uncoupling between these secondary metabolites produced by the same methylerythritol 4‐phosphate pathway. Future results from manipulative experiments and long‐term observations may help untangling the interactive effects of these factors and filling gaps featured in the current meta‐analysis.

However, most of them suffer from high computation cost and cannot satisfy the requirement of real applications. In this paper, we propose a novel discord discovery algorithm BitClusterDiscord which is based on bit representation clustering. Firstly, we use PAA (Piecewise Aggregate Approximation) bit serialization to segment time series, so as to capture the main variation characteristic of time series and avoid the influence of noise. Secondly, we present an improved K-Medoids clustering algorithm to merge several patterns with similar variation behaviors into a common cluster. Finally, based on bit representation clustering, we design two pruning strategies and propose an effective algorithm for time series discord discovery. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that the proposed approach can not only effectively find discord of time series, but also greatly improve the computational efficiency. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Cabeza; Karim Menoufi;Abstract Among the research activities that aim at reducing energy consumption in buildings and their impact on the environment is an experimental set-up that has several house-shaped cubicles constructed in Puigverd de Lleida (Spain). Assessing the environmental impact through studying the manufacturing, operational and disposal phases of these cubicles have been done in previous research. The objective of this paper is to investigate the use of esters as PCM in order to estimate its environmental impact in building envelopes in comparison to the use of paraffin or salt hydrates through a theoretical study. The evaluation of the environmental impact of this type of PCM material is conducted using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) based on the Eco-indicator 99 method. It is found that the impact of ester used as PCM presents slightly better results than the case of using salt hydrates during the manufacturing impact. On the other hand, the use of salt hydrates or ester as PCM in the cubicles results in an impact reduction of 9% and 10.5% respectively, compared to the case of using paraffin.

Cornelissen; Qianhui Liang; Jinchun Liu; Yajie Zhao; Zhou Li; Jianping Tao;Uneven soil depth and low water availability are the key limiting factors to vegetation restoration and reconstruction in limestone soils such as in vulnerable karst regions. Belowground competition will possibly increase under limited soil resources. Here, we investigate whether low resource availability (including shallow soil, low water availability, and shallow soil and low water availability combined) stimulates the competition between grasses with different root systems in karst soil, by assessing their growth response, biomass allocation, and morphological plasticity. In a full three-way factorial blocked design of soil depth by water availability by neighbor identity, we grew Festuca arundinacea (deep-rooted) and Lolium perenne (shallow-rooted) under normal versus shallow soil depth, high versus low water availability, and in monoculture (conspecific neighbor) versus mixture (neighbor of the other species). The key results were as follows: (1) total biomass and aboveground biomass in either of the species decreased with reduction of resources but were not affected by planting patterns (monoculture or mixture) even at low resource levels. (2) For F. arundinacea, root biomass, root mass fraction, total root length, and root volume were higher in mixture than in monoculture at high resource level (consistent with resource use complementarity), but lower in mixture than in monoculture at low resource levels (consistent with interspecific competition). In contrast for L. perenne, either at high or low resource level, these root traits had mostly similar values at both planting patterns. These results suggest that deep-rooted and shallow-rooted plant species can coexist in karst regions under current climatic regimes. Declining resources, due to shallow soil, a decrease in precipitation, or combined shallow soil and karst drought, increased the root competition between plants of deep-rooted and shallow-rooted species. The root systems of deep-rooted plants may be too small to get sufficient water and nutrients from dry, shallow soil, while shallow-rooted plants will maintain a dominant position with their already adaptive strategy in respect of root biomass allocation and root growth.

Noordover; Daan S. van Es; Shanmugam Thiyagarajan;AbstractBuilding blocks of isohexides extended by one carbon atom at the 2‐ or 5‐positions are now synthetically accessible by a convenient, selective, base‐catalyzed epimerization of the corresponding dinitriles. Kinetic experiments using the strong organic base 1,8‐diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec‐7‐ene (DBU) show that all three possible isohexide dinitrile isomers exist within a dynamic equilibrium. An epimerization mechanism based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations is proposed. Structural identification of all three possible isomers is based on NMR analysis and single crystal x‐ray crystallography. DFT calculations confirm that the observed crystal structures are indeed the lowest energy conformers of these isohexide derivatives.

Cogdell;Dispersed multipump-probe (PPP) spectroscopy was used to explore the role of saturation, annihilation, and structured pulses in recent coherent control experiments on the light-harvesting 2 complex from Rhodopseudomonas acidophila (Herek et al. Nature 2002, 417, 533). We discuss the complimentary aspects between the PPP technique and coherent control studies, in particular the ability to dissect complicated pulse structures and the utility in exploring incoherent mechanisms. With the aid of a simple multistate model involving only population dynamics, we illustrate how the optimized structured pulses may be explained in terms of an interplay between excited-state populations, saturation, and annihilation. Furthermore, we discuss the experimental conditions that are required for incoherent effects to contribute to control experimental signals, with particular emphasis on pulse intensities, and show that the optimization of a ratio of conservative signals (i.e., not modulated by external dynamics) is required to exclude saturation effects from coherent control studies.

Novoderezhkin; Rienk van Grondelle;We model the spectra (absorption and circular dichroism) and excitation dynamics in the B800 ring of the LH2 antenna complex from Rs. molischianum using different theoretical approaches, i.e., Förster theory, standard and modified versions of the Redfield theory, and the more versatile nonperturbative approach based on hierarchically coupled equations for the reduced density operator. We demonstrate that, although excitations in the B800 ring are localized due to disorder, thermal effects, and phonons, there are still sizable excitonic effects producing shift, narrowing, and asymmetry of the spectra. Moreover, the excitation dynamics reveals the presence of long-lived (up to 1 ps) non-oscillatory coherences between the exciton states maintained due to nonsecular population-to-coherence transfers. The sub-ps decay of the coherences is followed by slow motion of the excitation around the ring, producing equilibration of the site populations with a time constant of about 3-4 ps, which is slower than the B800 → B850 transfer. The exact solution obtained with the hierarchical equations is compared with other approaches, thus illustrating limitations of the Förster and Redfield pictures.
