Thermal energy storage systems (TES) based on shape-stabilized phase change materials (SSPCM) designed from recycled Tetra Pak (TP) waste, paraffin wax (PW), and expanded graphite (EG) were investigated in this study. This work represents the first study to explore TP waste composed of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/aluminum (Al) components for energy storage applications. The LDPE part serves as a matrix conserving a material in a compact, solid shape after PW melting; PW acts as an active phase change component contributing to heat absorption/release through a phase change (from a solid to a liquid state, and vice versa) of its crystalline phase. EG serves as a filler that enhances the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of materials. The focus was put on the optimization of the composition of SSPCM including PW, and EG, to check thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties which influence the future processability of such systems through extrusion, as well as to investigate the synergic effect of graphite and residual Al component on thermal conductivity and leakage of PW. There are two main demands on polymer/PW blends, namely well-separated melting peaks for both components at significantly different temperatures, and good compatibility between polymer and PW. The best performance of SSPCM investigated in this study was found for a mixture having the composition TP/PW/EG = 50/40/10 w/w/w. This mixture shows well-balanced properties, including appropriate heat storage and release parameters, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, toughness and strength, and low leakage of PW from the material. This system can store 116.2 J/g of heat energy and release 93.8 J/g of heat energy. The determination of the heat energy storage and release was performed by the transient guarded hot plate technique. Tensile testing revealed that Young's modulus of the TP/PW/EG = 50/40/10 w/w/w composition was 924 ± 71 MPa and the stress at break was 8.2 ± 1.2 MPa, which are sufficient values from the applicability ...

When a Local Thermal Non Equilibrium (LTNE) model is employed, convection heat transfer between the solid and fluid phases is considered, and a volumetric heat transfer coefficient needs to be defined. Some recent studies pointed out that the effects of developing convection heat transfer between the fluid and the solid in a foam are to be taken into account. The developing thermal flow of air through an open-cell foam, with a uniform heat flux solid/fluid boundary condition, is investigated numerically in this paper. The geometry is modeled with reference to Kelvin's tetrakaidecahedron foam model. A correlation among the porosity, the cell diameter and the ratio of heat transfer surface to volume is derived. Three regions are identified along the flow direction: an impingement region, a thermally developing region and a thermally developed region. Dimensional and dimensionless convection heat transfer coefficients have been predicted numerically as a function of the axial coordinate of the foam, for different values of the Reynolds number and the porosity. A correlation is presented among the predicted values of the volumetric Nusselt number, the porosity, and the Reynolds number in the thermally developed region, which is in good agreement with experimental data and numerical predictions by other authors. Finally, the analysis of the convection heat transfer through a single foam cell, at a local pore-scale, is presented.

Several cases of fatal enterocolitis have been described in association with the use of docetaxel (DTX), and this increase in adverse events has been concomitant with a change in formulation. Indeed in 2010, a new DTX-based presentation has been introduced in the form of a single ready-to-use vial by Sanofi-Aventis, presentation also used for generics. In this study, different available formulations were compared (Sanofi 2 vials, Sanofi 1 vial, Accord Healthcare, Kabi, Hospira) in terms of composition compliance with control specifications and simulated micelle behaviour to try to determine what could be the potential causes of this problem. This work had permitted to show that all the tested products complied with specifications in terms of dosage and purity. Variations in the composition of polysorbate 80 (PS80) have been observed but are probably too small to be responsible for the toxicity found in patients. However, we identified a difference in micelle size and release kinetics probably because of doubling concentration of ethanol in new formulation. As a result, we emphasised the importance in the case of DTX of conducting bioequivalence studies as expected in European Medicines Agency (EMA) guidance to ensure patient safety, even though these formulation changes might seem minor. Therefore, further studies are needed to explore the potential role of ethanol, PS80 and the unbound fraction of DTX in the development of enterocolitis in patients treated with DTX.

Abstract This work focuses on the study of heat transfer mechanisms in composites materials which may be used for Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage applications. These composites contain phase change material (PCM) which can absorb and release energy during thermal cycling. PCM’s used here are paraffins microencapsulated in poly(methylmethacrylate); microencapsulation avoids the flow of paraffin when it is in the liquid state. Samples with different paraffin weight fractions and particles shape and distribution were studied in this work. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry were used to determine morphology and perform measurements of phase changes temperatures, enthalpies and heat capacity respectively. Further, a periodic method (DICO) allowed measuring thermal conductivity (λ) and diffusivity (a) of the composites at temperatures below and above of the paraffin phase change from crystalline solid to isotropic liquid.

In this regard, we extend the findings of non-empirical studies dealing with this issue for the case of African countries and complement the literature on the methodological side by investigating this relationship using wavelet analysis. This frequency approach is appropriate, as it takes into account investor heterogeneity and the time-variant characteristic of the studied relationship. Further, it explains the lead–lag relationship between the studied series. First, we observe that credit and commodities are strongly related over long timescales, suggesting that the credit market reacts strongly to long-term change in commodity markets and thus tends to be sensitive to persistent commodity shocks. Second, for medium and short timescales, the interaction is high and significant only during periods of turmoil. In terms of the lead–lag relationship, our results also show that the commodity market causes fluctuations in the credit market.

The low grazing pressure on these blooms has been attributed to the inability of overwintering copepod populations to track them temporally. We tested an alternative explanation: that dominant diatom species impair the reproductive success of their grazers. We compared larval development of a common overwintering copepod fed on a ubiquitous, early-blooming diatom species with its development when fed on a typical post-bloom dinoflagellate. Development was arrested in all larvae in which both mothers and their larvae were fed the diatom diet. Mortality remained high even if larvae were switched to the dinoflagellate diet. Aldehydes, cleaved from a fatty acid precursor by enzymes activated within seconds after crushing of the cell, elicit the teratogenic effect. This insidious mechanism, which does not deter the herbivore from feeding but impairs its recruitment, will restrain the cohort size of the next generation of early-rising overwinterers. Such a transgenerational plant-herbivore interaction could explain the recurringly inefficient use of a predictable, potentially valuable food resource--the spring diatom bloom--by marine zooplankton.

Li;In this study, the energy, exergy, exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental (4E) analyses of a cogeneration system that combines photovoltaic thermal panels (PV/T), evacuated tube solar collectors, an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and energy storage systems are performed. The cogeneration model is built to meet the load demand of independent houses in remote areas and avoids excessive consumption of traditional energy and environmental pollution. Here, the exergoenvironmental analysis adopts the Eco-indicator-99 method and the all life cycle assessment method is used to calculate the environmental impact of each component. Two comparative studies are conducted to the 4E analyses. The first one compares the comprehensive performance of the battery storage and hydrogen production for energy storage. The results indicate that the cogeneration system using both batteries and hydrogen production for energy storage has the best overall performance. According the exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental analyses, its environmental impact is 23.6% lower than the cogeneration system using batteries alone and the PV/T can be fully utilized. In addition, the total cost rate is 6.2% lower than the cogeneration system using hydrogen production alone. The second case investigates the effect of adding the evacuated tube solar collectors between the PV/T and ORC on the cogeneration system. The analysis results demonstrate that the evacuated tube solar collectors can increase the heat source temperature of the ORC to increase the power generation of the ORC by 37.14%; however, the total cost rate of the cogeneration system increases by 3.7% and the environmental impact rate increases by 19.8%.

Forest dieback due to climate change has severe consequences for the sensitive environments of mountain forests which provide important ecosystem services for local communities, lowlands inhabitants, and visitors. However, this phenomenon is sometimes hard to identify for the lay public as it can manifest as a slow-onset phenomenon with rather inconspicuous signals or as large-scale disturbances like in the case of bark beetle outbreaks. The aim of this contribution is to analyze whether lay people perceive climate change-induced forest dieback in the landscape or not and what kind of damage they identify. To address this issue, we carried out a cross-comparison case-study in two mountain areas in France and Germany. To analyze the data, we introduce an innovative variable clustering approach to identify different groups of respondents based on their perception of climate change and forest dieback. Five groups of respondents-illustrating different degrees of worry-were identified in each case study: the non-alarmist, the carefree, the least informed, the worried, and the alarmist. These results show that both phenomena are not perceived as distant but as happening here and now; and that their perceptions are influenced by local contexts and personal experiences. We finally show that public perception of forest dieback has influenced the agenda setting on the enactment of new forest policies. Thermal energy storage systems (TES) based on shape-stabilized phase change materials (SSPCM) designed from recycled Tetra Pak (TP) waste, paraffin wax (PW), and expanded graphite (EG) were investigated in this study. This work represents the first study to explore TP waste composed of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/aluminum (Al) components for energy storage applications. The LDPE part serves as a matrix conserving a material in a compact, solid shape after PW melting; PW acts as an active phase change component contributing to heat absorption/release through a phase change (from a solid to a liquid state, and vice versa) of its crystalline phase. EG serves as a filler that enhances the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of materials. The focus was put on the optimization of the composition of SSPCM including PW, and EG, to check thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties which influence the future processability of such systems through extrusion, as well as to investigate the synergic effect of graphite and residual Al component on thermal conductivity and leakage of PW. There are two main demands on polymer/PW blends, namely well-separated melting peaks for both components at significantly different temperatures, and good compatibility between polymer and PW. The best performance of SSPCM investigated in this study was found for a mixture having the composition TP/PW/EG = 50/40/10 w/w/w. This mixture shows well-balanced properties, including appropriate heat storage and release parameters, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, toughness and strength, and low leakage of PW from the material. This system can store 116.2 J/g of heat energy and release 93.8 J/g of heat energy. The determination of the heat energy storage and release was performed by the transient guarded hot plate technique. Tensile testing revealed that Young's modulus of the TP/PW/EG = 50/40/10 w/w/w composition was 924 ± 71 MPa and the stress at break was 8.2 ± 1.2 MPa, which are sufficient values from the applicability ...

When a Local Thermal Non Equilibrium (LTNE) model is employed, convection heat transfer between the solid and fluid phases is considered, and a volumetric heat transfer coefficient needs to be defined. Some recent studies pointed out that the effects of developing convection heat transfer between the fluid and the solid in a foam are to be taken into account. The developing thermal flow of air through an open-cell foam, with a uniform heat flux solid/fluid boundary condition, is investigated numerically in this paper. The geometry is modeled with reference to Kelvin's tetrakaidecahedron foam model. A correlation among the porosity, the cell diameter and the ratio of heat transfer surface to volume is derived. Three regions are identified along the flow direction: an impingement region, a thermally developing region and a thermally developed region. Dimensional and dimensionless convection heat transfer coefficients have been predicted numerically as a function of the axial coordinate of the foam, for different values of the Reynolds number and the porosity. A correlation is presented among the predicted values of the volumetric Nusselt number, the porosity, and the Reynolds number in the thermally developed region, which is in good agreement with experimental data and numerical predictions by other authors. Finally, the analysis of the convection heat transfer through a single foam cell, at a local pore-scale, is presented.

Several cases of fatal enterocolitis have been described in association with the use of docetaxel (DTX), and this increase in adverse events has been concomitant with a change in formulation. Indeed in 2010, a new DTX-based presentation has been introduced in the form of a single ready-to-use vial by Sanofi-Aventis, presentation also used for generics. In this study, different available formulations were compared (Sanofi 2 vials, Sanofi 1 vial, Accord Healthcare, Kabi, Hospira) in terms of composition compliance with control specifications and simulated micelle behaviour to try to determine what could be the potential causes of this problem. This work had permitted to show that all the tested products complied with specifications in terms of dosage and purity. Variations in the composition of polysorbate 80 (PS80) have been observed but are probably too small to be responsible for the toxicity found in patients. However, we identified a difference in micelle size and release kinetics probably because of doubling concentration of ethanol in new formulation. As a result, we emphasised the importance in the case of DTX of conducting bioequivalence studies as expected in European Medicines Agency (EMA) guidance to ensure patient safety, even though these formulation changes might seem minor. Therefore, further studies are needed to explore the potential role of ethanol, PS80 and the unbound fraction of DTX in the development of enterocolitis in patients treated with DTX.

Abstract This work focuses on the study of heat transfer mechanisms in composites materials which may be used for Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage applications. These composites contain phase change material (PCM) which can absorb and release energy during thermal cycling. PCM’s used here are paraffins microencapsulated in poly(methylmethacrylate); microencapsulation avoids the flow of paraffin when it is in the liquid state. Samples with different paraffin weight fractions and particles shape and distribution were studied in this work. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry were used to determine morphology and perform measurements of phase changes temperatures, enthalpies and heat capacity respectively. Further, a periodic method (DICO) allowed measuring thermal conductivity (λ) and diffusivity (a) of the composites at temperatures below and above of the paraffin phase change from crystalline solid to isotropic liquid.

In this regard, we extend the findings of non-empirical studies dealing with this issue for the case of African countries and complement the literature on the methodological side by investigating this relationship using wavelet analysis. This frequency approach is appropriate, as it takes into account investor heterogeneity and the time-variant characteristic of the studied relationship. Further, it explains the lead–lag relationship between the studied series. First, we observe that credit and commodities are strongly related over long timescales, suggesting that the credit market reacts strongly to long-term change in commodity markets and thus tends to be sensitive to persistent commodity shocks. Second, for medium and short timescales, the interaction is high and significant only during periods of turmoil. In terms of the lead–lag relationship, our results also show that the commodity market causes fluctuations in the credit market.

The low grazing pressure on these blooms has been attributed to the inability of overwintering copepod populations to track them temporally. We tested an alternative explanation: that dominant diatom species impair the reproductive success of their grazers. We compared larval development of a common overwintering copepod fed on a ubiquitous, early-blooming diatom species with its development when fed on a typical post-bloom dinoflagellate. Development was arrested in all larvae in which both mothers and their larvae were fed the diatom diet. Mortality remained high even if larvae were switched to the dinoflagellate diet. Aldehydes, cleaved from a fatty acid precursor by enzymes activated within seconds after crushing of the cell, elicit the teratogenic effect. This insidious mechanism, which does not deter the herbivore from feeding but impairs its recruitment, will restrain the cohort size of the next generation of early-rising overwinterers. Such a transgenerational plant-herbivore interaction could explain the recurringly inefficient use of a predictable, potentially valuable food resource--the spring diatom bloom--by marine zooplankton.

Li;In this study, the energy, exergy, exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental (4E) analyses of a cogeneration system that combines photovoltaic thermal panels (PV/T), evacuated tube solar collectors, an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and energy storage systems are performed. The cogeneration model is built to meet the load demand of independent houses in remote areas and avoids excessive consumption of traditional energy and environmental pollution. Here, the exergoenvironmental analysis adopts the Eco-indicator-99 method and the all life cycle assessment method is used to calculate the environmental impact of each component. Two comparative studies are conducted to the 4E analyses. The first one compares the comprehensive performance of the battery storage and hydrogen production for energy storage. The results indicate that the cogeneration system using both batteries and hydrogen production for energy storage has the best overall performance. According the exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental analyses, its environmental impact is 23.6% lower than the cogeneration system using batteries alone and the PV/T can be fully utilized. In addition, the total cost rate is 6.2% lower than the cogeneration system using hydrogen production alone. The second case investigates the effect of adding the evacuated tube solar collectors between the PV/T and ORC on the cogeneration system. The analysis results demonstrate that the evacuated tube solar collectors can increase the heat source temperature of the ORC to increase the power generation of the ORC by 37.14%; however, the total cost rate of the cogeneration system increases by 3.7% and the environmental impact rate increases by 19.8%.

Forest dieback due to climate change has severe consequences for the sensitive environments of mountain forests which provide important ecosystem services for local communities, lowlands inhabitants, and visitors. However, this phenomenon is sometimes hard to identify for the lay public as it can manifest as a slow-onset phenomenon with rather inconspicuous signals or as large-scale disturbances like in the case of bark beetle outbreaks. The aim of this contribution is to analyze whether lay people perceive climate change-induced forest dieback in the landscape or not and what kind of damage they identify. To address this issue, we carried out a cross-comparison case-study in two mountain areas in France and Germany. To analyze the data, we introduce an innovative variable clustering approach to identify different groups of respondents based on their perception of climate change and forest dieback. Five groups of respondents-illustrating different degrees of worry-were identified in each case study: the non-alarmist, the carefree, the least informed, the worried, and the alarmist. These results show that both phenomena are not perceived as distant but as happening here and now; and that their perceptions are influenced by local contexts and personal experiences. We finally show that public perception of forest dieback has influenced the agenda setting on the enactment of new forest policies.
