Mismatching operating conditions affect the energetic performance of PhotoVoltaic (PV) systems because they decrease their efficiency and reliability. The two different approaches used to overcome this problem are Distributed Maximum Power Point Tracking (DMPPT) architecture and reconfigurable PV array architecture. These techniques can be considered not only as alternatives but can be combined to reach better performance. To this aim, the present paper presents a new algorithm, based on the joint action of the DMPPT and reconfiguration approaches, applied to a reconfigurable Series-Parallel-Series architecture, which is suitable for domestic PV application. The core of the algorithm is a deterministic cluster analysis based on the shape of the current vs. voltage characteristic of a single PV module combined with its DC/DC converter to perform the DMPPT function. Experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and to demonstrate evidence of its major advantages: robustness, simplicity of implementation and time-saving.

Kozlov; Erik J. van Nieukerken; Niels Martin Schmidt;Chronic, low intensity herbivory by invertebrates, termed background herbivory, has been understudied in tundra, yet its impacts are likely to increase in a warmer Arctic. The magnitude of these changes is however hard to predict as we know little about the drivers of current levels of invertebrate herbivory in tundra. We assessed the intensity of invertebrate herbivory on a common tundra plant, the dwarf birch (Betula glandulosa-nana complex), and investigated its relationship to latitude and climate across the tundra biome. Leaf damage by defoliating, mining and gall-forming invertebrates was measured in samples collected from 192 sites at 56 locations. Our results indicate that invertebrate herbivory is nearly ubiquitous across the tundra biome but occurs at low intensity. On average, invertebrates damaged 11.2% of the leaves and removed 1.4% of total leaf area. The damage was mainly caused by external leaf feeders, and most damaged leaves were only slightly affected (12% leaf area lost). Foliar damage was consistently positively correlated with mid-summer (July) temperature and, to a lesser extent, precipitation in the year of data collection, irrespective of latitude. Our models predict that, on average, foliar losses to invertebrates on dwarf birch are likely to increase by 6--7% over the current levels with a 1 textdegreeC increase in summer temperatures. Our results show that invertebrate herbivory on dwarf birch is small in magnitude but given its prevalence and dependence on climatic variables, background invertebrate herbivory should be included in predictions of climate change impacts on tundra ecosystems.

On the one hand, the aeroengine manufacturers are working to improve fuel consumption and reduce pollutant emissions with new combustion systems; on the other hand, much attention is given to reducing the weight of the batteries increasing the energy density. Hybrid electric propulsion systems (HEPS) can take advantage of the synergy between two technologies by utilizing both internal combustion engines (ICEs) and electric motors (EMs) together, each operating at their respective optimum conditions. In the present work, some numerical investigations were carried out by using a zero-dimensional code able to simulate the flight mission of a turboprop aircraft, comparing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions of the original engine with other two smaller gas turbines working in hybrid configuration. An algorithm has been implemented to calculate the weight of the batteries for the different configurations examined, evaluating the feasibility of the hybrid propulsion system in terms of number of non-revenue passengers.

In this paper, the modifications realized to make optically accessible a commercial high performance spark ignition and direct injection (DI) 4-cylinder engine are reported. The engine has been designed trying to keep as much as possible its thermo-fluid dynamic configuration in order to maintain its performance and emissions. Two optical accesses have been realized in order to interfere as little as possible with the combustion chamber geometry. A first optical access has been achieved in the piston head and a second by inserting an endoscopic fiber probe in the head. Preliminary results demonstrated that this optical assessment responds to the design targets and allowed a characterization of a commercial GDI engine working with homogeneous and stratified charge mode.

However, it remains unclear how paleoclimate shapes spatial variation in biodiversity. Here, we assessed the influence of Quaternary climate change on spatial dissimilarity in taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional composition among neighboring 200-kilometer cells (beta-diversity) for angiosperm trees worldwide. We found that larger glacial-interglacial temperature change was strongly associated with lower spatial turnover (species replacements) and higher nestedness (richness changes) components of beta-diversity across all three biodiversity facets. Moreover, phylogenetic and functional turnover was lower and nestedness higher than random expectations based on taxonomic beta-diversity in regions that experienced large temperature change, reflecting phylogenetically and functionally selective processes in species replacement, extinction, and colonization during glacial-interglacial oscillations. Our results suggest that future human-driven climate change could cause local homogenization and reduction in taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity of angiosperm trees worldwide.

The possibility of artificially inducing activation of MII buffalo oocytes may allow us to evaluate indirectly the quality of oocytes after in vitro maturation. The aim of this work was to compare buffalo embryo development after IVF and after chemical activation by two different agents. A further goal was to evaluate the effects of aging of oocytes on post-parthenogenetic and post-fertilization development. In Experiment 1 cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were recovered from abattoir-derived ovaries and matured in vitro. After IVM the COCs were either fertilized in vitro (positive control) or activated with ethanol and ionomycin, both followed by immediate exposure to 6-diethylaminopurine (6-DMAP) for 4 h. In vitro culture (IVC) was carried out up to the blastocyst stage. In Experiment 2 COCs were matured in vitro for 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 h before activation was triggered with ethanol, followed by 6-DMAP. In Experiment 3 COCs were fertilized in vitro at 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 h post-maturation. Ethanol activation gave better results than the IVF control group, with higher cleavage rate (71.4 +/- 7.8 versus 55.8 +/- 5.8, respectively; P < 0.05) and a higher proportion of oocytes developing into morulae-blastocysts (32.6 +/- 6.5 versus 22.9 +/- 7.5, respectively; P < 0.05). Within the activation groups, ethanol supported the highest development in terms of cleavage (71.4 +/- 7.8 versus 59.4 +/- 10.7; P < 0.05) and morulae-blastocysts rate (32.6 +/- 6.5 versus 25.7 +/- 8.3; n.s.). It was also demonstrated that aging negatively affects post-parthenogenetic and post-fertilization development.

In this work, a vibro-acoustic numerical and experimental analysis was carried out for the chain cover of a low powered four-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine, belonging to the FPT (FCA Power Train) family called SDE (Small Diesel Engine). By applying a methodology used in the acoustic optimization of new FPT engine components, firstly a finite element model (FEM) of the engine was defined, then a vibration analysis was performed for the whole engine (modal analysis), and finally a forced response analysis was developed for the only chain cover (separated from the overall engine). The boundary conditions applied to the chain cover were the accelerations experimentally measured by accelerometers located at the points of connection among chain cover, head cover, and crankcase. Subsequently, a boundary element (BE) model of the only chain cover was realized to determine the chain cover noise emission, starting from the previously calculated structural vibrations. The numerical vibro-acoustic outcomes were compared with those experimentally observed, obtaining a good correlation. All the information thus obtained allowed the identification of those critical areas, in terms of noise generation, in which to undertake necessary improvements.

Abstract This paper investigates two transition initiatives at the local level – namely the reconversion of the Porto Marghera and Gela refineries into biorefineries for second-generation biofuels. The study aimed at assessing the extent to which the narrative pressures exerted by local actors influenced the perspectives of key stakeholders involved in these transition processes. To this end, a blended methodology was employed, combining discourse analysis with stakeholder analysis and semi-structured interviews. First, stakeholders were grouped into four categories according to the source (national/global) and channel (formal/informal) of pressure. National/informal actors emerged as the most influential group. The discourse analysis identified three dominant storylines representing complementary trajectories defined by national actors operating through informal channels. Finally, semi-structured interviews with key local actors involved in the Porto Marghera and Gela reconversions were used to assess the impact of these storylines in the reconversion processes. Comparison of the two cases revealed fundamental specificities related to their respective cultural, political and socio-economic contexts. While the Porto Marghera reconversion was presented as a consolidated success story (albeit with a number of drawbacks related to the fact that it was still mainly powered by first-generation feedstocks), the Gela case was viewed as a complex and challenging ongoing process with an uncertain outcome.

Mismatching operating conditions affect the energetic performance of PhotoVoltaic (PV) systems because they decrease their efficiency and reliability. The two different approaches used to overcome this problem are Distributed Maximum Power Point Tracking (DMPPT) architecture and reconfigurable PV array architecture. These techniques can be considered not only as alternatives but can be combined to reach better performance. To this aim, the present paper presents a new algorithm, based on the joint action of the DMPPT and reconfiguration approaches, applied to a reconfigurable Series-Parallel-Series architecture, which is suitable for domestic PV application. The core of the algorithm is a deterministic cluster analysis based on the shape of the current vs. voltage characteristic of a single PV module combined with its DC/DC converter to perform the DMPPT function. Experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and to demonstrate evidence of its major advantages: robustness, simplicity of implementation and time-saving.

Kozlov; Erik J. van Nieukerken; Niels Martin Schmidt;Chronic, low intensity herbivory by invertebrates, termed background herbivory, has been understudied in tundra, yet its impacts are likely to increase in a warmer Arctic. The magnitude of these changes is however hard to predict as we know little about the drivers of current levels of invertebrate herbivory in tundra. We assessed the intensity of invertebrate herbivory on a common tundra plant, the dwarf birch (Betula glandulosa-nana complex), and investigated its relationship to latitude and climate across the tundra biome. Leaf damage by defoliating, mining and gall-forming invertebrates was measured in samples collected from 192 sites at 56 locations. Our results indicate that invertebrate herbivory is nearly ubiquitous across the tundra biome but occurs at low intensity. On average, invertebrates damaged 11.2% of the leaves and removed 1.4% of total leaf area. The damage was mainly caused by external leaf feeders, and most damaged leaves were only slightly affected (12% leaf area lost). Foliar damage was consistently positively correlated with mid-summer (July) temperature and, to a lesser extent, precipitation in the year of data collection, irrespective of latitude. Our models predict that, on average, foliar losses to invertebrates on dwarf birch are likely to increase by 6--7% over the current levels with a 1 textdegreeC increase in summer temperatures. Our results show that invertebrate herbivory on dwarf birch is small in magnitude but given its prevalence and dependence on climatic variables, background invertebrate herbivory should be included in predictions of climate change impacts on tundra ecosystems.

On the one hand, the aeroengine manufacturers are working to improve fuel consumption and reduce pollutant emissions with new combustion systems; on the other hand, much attention is given to reducing the weight of the batteries increasing the energy density. Hybrid electric propulsion systems (HEPS) can take advantage of the synergy between two technologies by utilizing both internal combustion engines (ICEs) and electric motors (EMs) together, each operating at their respective optimum conditions. In the present work, some numerical investigations were carried out by using a zero-dimensional code able to simulate the flight mission of a turboprop aircraft, comparing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions of the original engine with other two smaller gas turbines working in hybrid configuration. An algorithm has been implemented to calculate the weight of the batteries for the different configurations examined, evaluating the feasibility of the hybrid propulsion system in terms of number of non-revenue passengers.

In this paper, the modifications realized to make optically accessible a commercial high performance spark ignition and direct injection (DI) 4-cylinder engine are reported. The engine has been designed trying to keep as much as possible its thermo-fluid dynamic configuration in order to maintain its performance and emissions. Two optical accesses have been realized in order to interfere as little as possible with the combustion chamber geometry. A first optical access has been achieved in the piston head and a second by inserting an endoscopic fiber probe in the head. Preliminary results demonstrated that this optical assessment responds to the design targets and allowed a characterization of a commercial GDI engine working with homogeneous and stratified charge mode.

Here, we assessed the influence of Quaternary climate change on spatial dissimilarity in taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional composition among neighboring 200-kilometer cells (beta-diversity) for angiosperm trees worldwide. We found that larger glacial-interglacial temperature change was strongly associated with lower spatial turnover (species replacements) and higher nestedness (richness changes) components of beta-diversity across all three biodiversity facets. Moreover, phylogenetic and functional turnover was lower and nestedness higher than random expectations based on taxonomic beta-diversity in regions that experienced large temperature change, reflecting phylogenetically and functionally selective processes in species replacement, extinction, and colonization during glacial-interglacial oscillations. Our results suggest that future human-driven climate change could cause local homogenization and reduction in taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity of angiosperm trees worldwide.

The possibility of artificially inducing activation of MII buffalo oocytes may allow us to evaluate indirectly the quality of oocytes after in vitro maturation. The aim of this work was to compare buffalo embryo development after IVF and after chemical activation by two different agents. A further goal was to evaluate the effects of aging of oocytes on post-parthenogenetic and post-fertilization development. In Experiment 1 cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were recovered from abattoir-derived ovaries and matured in vitro. After IVM the COCs were either fertilized in vitro (positive control) or activated with ethanol and ionomycin, both followed by immediate exposure to 6-diethylaminopurine (6-DMAP) for 4 h. In vitro culture (IVC) was carried out up to the blastocyst stage. In Experiment 2 COCs were matured in vitro for 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 h before activation was triggered with ethanol, followed by 6-DMAP. In Experiment 3 COCs were fertilized in vitro at 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 h post-maturation. Ethanol activation gave better results than the IVF control group, with higher cleavage rate (71.4 +/- 7.8 versus 55.8 +/- 5.8, respectively; P < 0.05) and a higher proportion of oocytes developing into morulae-blastocysts (32.6 +/- 6.5 versus 22.9 +/- 7.5, respectively; P < 0.05). Within the activation groups, ethanol supported the highest development in terms of cleavage (71.4 +/- 7.8 versus 59.4 +/- 10.7; P < 0.05) and morulae-blastocysts rate (32.6 +/- 6.5 versus 25.7 +/- 8.3; n.s.). It was also demonstrated that aging negatively affects post-parthenogenetic and post-fertilization development.

In this work, a vibro-acoustic numerical and experimental analysis was carried out for the chain cover of a low powered four-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine, belonging to the FPT (FCA Power Train) family called SDE (Small Diesel Engine). By applying a methodology used in the acoustic optimization of new FPT engine components, firstly a finite element model (FEM) of the engine was defined, then a vibration analysis was performed for the whole engine (modal analysis), and finally a forced response analysis was developed for the only chain cover (separated from the overall engine). The boundary conditions applied to the chain cover were the accelerations experimentally measured by accelerometers located at the points of connection among chain cover, head cover, and crankcase. Subsequently, a boundary element (BE) model of the only chain cover was realized to determine the chain cover noise emission, starting from the previously calculated structural vibrations. The numerical vibro-acoustic outcomes were compared with those experimentally observed, obtaining a good correlation. All the information thus obtained allowed the identification of those critical areas, in terms of noise generation, in which to undertake necessary improvements.

Abstract This paper investigates two transition initiatives at the local level – namely the reconversion of the Porto Marghera and Gela refineries into biorefineries for second-generation biofuels. The study aimed at assessing the extent to which the narrative pressures exerted by local actors influenced the perspectives of key stakeholders involved in these transition processes. To this end, a blended methodology was employed, combining discourse analysis with stakeholder analysis and semi-structured interviews. First, stakeholders were grouped into four categories according to the source (national/global) and channel (formal/informal) of pressure. National/informal actors emerged as the most influential group. The discourse analysis identified three dominant storylines representing complementary trajectories defined by national actors operating through informal channels. Finally, semi-structured interviews with key local actors involved in the Porto Marghera and Gela reconversions were used to assess the impact of these storylines in the reconversion processes. Comparison of the two cases revealed fundamental specificities related to their respective cultural, political and socio-economic contexts. While the Porto Marghera reconversion was presented as a consolidated success story (albeit with a number of drawbacks related to the fact that it was still mainly powered by first-generation feedstocks), the Gela case was viewed as a complex and challenging ongoing process with an uncertain outcome.
