These parks are not only crucial for the country to accelerate industrialization but also to achieve its climate change targets. Constructing CO2 emission inventories for industrial parks is the first step in analysing the park's emission patterns and designing low-carbon policies. However, most of the previous emission accounts for industrial parks adopted various scopes and methodologies, making them incomparable with each other. This study develops a self-consistent methodology and framework for China's industrial parks based on enterprise-level data. We consider both Scope 1 and 2 emissions and construct the inventories by 19 energy types and 39 industrial sectors, which are consistent with the existing national, provincial, and city-level emission inventories. Such sectoral-based emission inventories will be not only able to provide data support for the design of emission/energy control policies, but also help the central/local governments evaluate a park's emission reduction performance. Finally, an empirical study is applied to four industrial parks to verify the method. In addition, we review the eco-industrial park programmes in Japan and South Korea, as well as their emissions accounting framework. We find that most of the Japanese industrial parks provide Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, while for South Korea, parks mostly focus on Scope 1 emissions. The discussion of Japan and South Korea's eco-industrial parks have referential significance for the construction China's low-carbon parks.

J. in OpenAIRELand use is central to addressing sustainability issues, including biodiversity conservation, climate change, food security, poverty alleviation, and sustainable energy. In this paper, we synthesize knowledge accumulated in land system science, the integrated study of terrestrial social-ecological systems, into 10 hard truths that have strong, general, empirical support. These facts help to explain the challenges of achieving sustainability in land use and thus also point toward solutions. The 10 facts are as follows: 1) Meanings and values of land are socially constructed and contested; 2) land systems exhibit complex behaviors with abrupt, hard-to-predict changes; 3) irreversible changes and path dependence are common features of land systems; 4) some land uses have a small footprint but very large impacts; 5) drivers and impacts of land-use change are globally interconnected and spill over to distant locations; 6) humanity lives on a used planet where all land provides benefits to societies; 7) land-use change usually entails trade-offs between different benefits—"win–wins" are thus rare; 8) land tenure and land-use claims are often unclear, overlapping, and contested; 9) the benefits and burdens from land are unequally distributed; and 10) land users have multiple, sometimes conflicting, ideas of what social and environmental justice entails. The facts have implications for governance, but do not provide fixed answers. Instead they constitute a set of core principles which can guide scientists, policy makers, and practitioners toward meeting sustainability challenges in land use.

AbstractIn the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan largely moved away from nuclear power generation and turned back towards an energy sector dominated by fossil fuels. As a result, the pace towards reaching emission reduction targets has largely slowed down. This situation indicates that higher emissions will continue to be generated if there is no appropriate and efficient measurement implemented to bridge the energy demand gap. To contribute adequate mitigation policies, a detailed inventory of both CO2 emissions and socioeconomic factors, both at the national and regional level, should be issued. Thereby, this work contributes to a time-series emission with a record of 47 prefectures in Japan as well as their associated socioeconomic features. The compiled emission inventory is based on three major fossil fuels and 26 sectors with careful emission allocations for regional electricity generation. This dataset is uniformly formatted and can be expected to provide vital information to set regional reduction allowances and sectoral reduction priorities.

Corinne Le Quéré in OpenAIREAbstractQuantification of CO2 fluxes at the Earth’s surface is required to evaluate the causes and drivers of observed increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Atmospheric inversion models disaggregate observed variations in atmospheric CO2 concentration to variability in CO2 emissions and sinks. They require prior constraints fossil CO2 emissions. Here we describe GCP-GridFED (version 2019.1), a gridded fossil emissions dataset that is consistent with the national CO2 emissions reported by the Global Carbon Project (GCP). GCP-GridFEDv2019.1 provides monthly fossil CO2 emissions estimates for the period 1959–2018 at a spatial resolution of 0.1°. Estimates are provided separately for oil, coal and natural gas, for mixed international bunker fuels, and for the calcination of limestone during cement production. GCP-GridFED also includes gridded estimates of O2 uptake based on oxidative ratios for oil, coal and natural gas. It will be updated annually and made available for atmospheric inversions contributing to GCP global carbon budget assessments, thus aligning the prior constraints on top-down fossil CO2 emissions with the bottom-up estimates compiled by the GCP.

Although fisheries reforms and advances in offshore aquaculture (hereafter 'mariculture') could increase production2, the true future of seafood depends on human responses to climate change3. Here we investigated whether coordinated reforms in fisheries and mariculture could increase seafood production per capita under climate change. We find that climate-adaptive fisheries reforms will be necessary but insufficient to maintain global seafood production per capita, even with aggressive reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions. However, the potential for sustainable mariculture to increase seafood per capita is vast and could increase seafood production per capita under all but the most severe emissions scenario. These increases are contingent on fisheries reforms, continued advances in feed technology and the establishment of effective mariculture governance and best practices. Furthermore, dramatically curbing emissions is essential for reducing inequities, increasing reform efficacy and mitigating risks unaccounted for in our analysis. Although climate change will challenge the ocean's ability to meet growing food demands, the ocean could produce more food than it does currently through swift and ambitious action to reduce emissions, reform capture fisheries and expand sustainable mariculture operations.

Changqing Jiang in OpenAIREAbstract: Power generation using dielectric elastomer (DE) artificial muscle is attracting attention because of its light weight, low cost, and high efficiency. Since this method is a system that produces electricity without emitting carbon dioxide nor using rare earths, it would contribute to the goal of environmental sustainability. In this paper, the background of DEs, the associated high-efficient wave energy generation (WEG) systems that we developed using DEs, as well as the latest development of its material are summarized. By covering the challenges we face and the achievements that we’ve reached, we can discuss the opportunities to build the foundation of a recycled energy society through the usage of these WEGs. On the other hand, to make these possibilities commercially successful, the advantages of DEs need to be integrated with traditional technologies. To achieve this, we also consider the method of using DEs alone and a system used in combination with an oscillating water column. Finally, the current status and future of DEGs are discussed.

N. in OpenAIREAbstract To provide and improve national energy security and low-carbon green energy economy, as a government-supported research institute related to developing new and renewable energy technologies, including energy efficiency, Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) needs to establish a long-term strategic energy technology roadmap (ETRM) in the hydrogen economy sector for sustainable economic development. In this paper, we establish a strategic ETRM for hydrogen energy technologies in the hydrogen economy considering five criteria: economic impact (EI), commercial potential (CP), inner capacity (IC), technical spin-off (TS), and development cost (DC). As an extended research, we apply the integrated two-stage multi-criteria decision-making approach, including the hybrid fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, to assess the relative efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies in order to scientifically implement the hydrogen economy. Fuzzy AHP reflects the vagueness of human thought with interval values, and allocates the relative importance and weights of four criteria: EI, CP, IC, and TS. The DEA approach measures the relative efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies for the hydrogen economy with a ratio of outputs over inputs. The result of measuring the relative efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies focuses on 4 hydrogen technologies out of 13 hydrogen energy technologies. KIER has to focus on developing 4 strategic hydrogen energy technologies from economic view point in the first phase with limited resources. In addition, if energy policy makers consider as some candidates for strategic hydrogen technologies of the other 9 hydrogen energy technology, the performance and productivity of 9 hydrogen energy technologies should be increased and the input values of them have to be decreased. With a scientific decision-making approach, we can assess the relative efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies efficiently and allocate limited research and development (R&D) resources effectively for well-focused R&D.

Jeroen C.J.M. van den Bergh in OpenAIREA widespread implicit assumption is that renewable energy options are approximately low-carbon. However, production and life cycles of such technologies tend to produce CO2 emissions. To minimize life-cycle emissions, one should account for such emissions and implement adequate policies to encourage innovation and adoption of well-performing technologies in this respect. We develop a framework to analyse this issue, grounded in the concepts of ‘energy return on energy invested’ (EROI) and ‘net energy return on carbon invested’ (EROC). Applying these to the main PV technologies and production regions – namely China, EU and USA – displays considerable discrepancies. We conditionally predict the development of average EROI and EROC over time under business-as-usual and low-carbon electricity generation scenarios. A main policy lesson is that without a systemic policy instrument, such as carbon pricing, incentives for low-carbon production of renewable energy options are too weak, which likely will delay a complete transition to a low-carbon economy.

AbstractTraditional consumption-based greenhouse gas emissions accounting attributed the gap between consumption-based and production-based emissions to international trade. Yet few attempts have analyzed the temporal deviation between current emissions and future consumption, which can be explained through changes in capital stock. Here we develop a dynamic model to incorporate capital stock change in consumption-based accounting. The new model is applied using global data for 1995–2009. Our results show that global emissions embodied in consumption determined by the new model are smaller than those obtained from the traditional model. The emissions embodied in global capital stock increased steadily during the period. However, capital plays very different roles in shaping consumption-based emissions for economies with different development characteristics. As a result, the dynamic model yields similar consumption-based emissions estimation for many developed countries comparing with the traditional model, but it highlights the dynamics of fast-developing countries.

Environ un milliard de personnes vivent dans des zones montagneuses, qui abritent une riche diversité naturelle et socioculturelle. Aujourd'hui, de nombreuses personnes vivant dans des zones montagneuses du monde entier sont confrontées à des changements fondamentaux de leurs conditions de vie culturelles et économiques. Dans le même temps, les communautés de montagne ont défié les environnements difficiles dans le passé en s'adaptant aux conditions naturelles changeantes et en faisant preuve de niveaux remarquables de résilience. Dans cet article de synthèse, nous fournissons un aperçu complet de la littérature scientifique de langue anglaise sur les sujets liés à la résilience dans les zones de montagne sur la base d'une revue systématique de la base de données documentaire Scopus®. Nous proposons un point de départ structuré pour les interactions science-pratique et les activités concrètes basées sur l'action pour soutenir les moyens de subsistance et renforcer la résilience dans les zones de montagne. Nous suggérons que les lacunes existantes en matière de connaissances puissent être comblées en s'appuyant sur les connaissances locales et en co-créant des solutions avec les communautés. De cette façon, nous pouvons renforcer les capacités d'innovation et amortir activement l'impact des crises tout en soutenant la transformation délibérée vers la durabilité et la régénération pour améliorer davantage la résilience. Las montañas son el hogar de una parte considerable de la población humana. Alrededor de mil millones de personas viven en zonas montañosas, que albergan una rica diversidad natural y sociocultural. Hoy en día, muchas personas que viven en zonas montañosas de todo el mundo se enfrentan a cambios fundamentales en sus condiciones de vida culturales y económicas. Al mismo tiempo, las comunidades de montaña han desafiado los entornos hostiles en el pasado al adaptarse a las condiciones naturales cambiantes y mostrar niveles notables de resiliencia. En este documento de revisión, proporcionamos una descripción general completa de la literatura científica en inglés sobre temas relacionados con la resiliencia en áreas montañosas basada en una revisión sistemática de la base de datos de literatura Scopus®. Proponemos un punto de partida estructurado para las interacciones entre la ciencia y la práctica y actividades concretas basadas en la acción para apoyar los medios de vida y fortalecer la resiliencia en las zonas montañosas. Sugerimos que las brechas de conocimiento existentes se pueden abordar confiando en el conocimiento local y cocreando soluciones con las comunidades. De esta manera, podemos crear capacidad innovadora y amortiguar activamente el impacto de las crisis, al tiempo que apoyamos la transformación deliberada hacia la sostenibilidad y la regeneración para mejorar aún más la resiliencia. Mountains are home to a considerable share of the human population. Around a billion people live in mountainous areas, which harbor rich natural and sociocultural diversity. Today, many people living in mountainous areas worldwide face fundamental changes to their cultural and economic living conditions. At the same time, mountain communities have defied harsh environments in the past by adapting to changing natural conditions and showing remarkable levels of resilience. In this review paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of English-language scientific literature on resilience-related topics in mountain areas based on a systematic review of the Scopus® literature database. We propose a structured starting point for science–practice interactions and concrete action-based activities to support livelihoods and strengthen resilience in mountain areas. We suggest that existing knowledge gaps can be addressed by relying on local knowledge and cocreating solutions with communities. In this way, we can build innovative capacity and actively buffer against the impact of crises while supporting deliberate transformation toward sustainability and regeneration to further enhance resilience. الجبال هي موطن لنسبة كبيرة من السكان. يعيش حوالي مليار شخص في المناطق الجبلية، التي تضم تنوعًا طبيعيًا واجتماعيًا ثقافيًا غنيًا. اليوم، يواجه العديد من الأشخاص الذين يعيشون في المناطق الجبلية في جميع أنحاء العالم تغييرات جوهرية في ظروفهم المعيشية الثقافية والاقتصادية. وفي الوقت نفسه، تحدت المجتمعات الجبلية البيئات القاسية في الماضي من خلال التكيف مع الظروف الطبيعية المتغيرة وإظهار مستويات ملحوظة من المرونة. في ورقة المراجعة هذه، نقدم نظرة عامة شاملة على الأدبيات العلمية باللغة الإنجليزية حول الموضوعات المتعلقة بالمرونة في المناطق الجبلية بناءً على مراجعة منهجية لقاعدة بيانات أدبيات Scopus®. نقترح نقطة انطلاق منظمة للتفاعلات بين العلوم والممارسات والأنشطة العملية الملموسة لدعم سبل العيش وتعزيز القدرة على الصمود في المناطق الجبلية. نقترح أنه يمكن معالجة الفجوات المعرفية الحالية من خلال الاعتماد على المعرفة المحلية وإيجاد حلول مشتركة مع المجتمعات. وبهذه الطريقة، يمكننا بناء قدرات مبتكرة والوقاية بنشاط من تأثير الأزمات مع دعم التحول المتعمد نحو الاستدامة والتجديد لزيادة تعزيز المرونة.
