description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2010 United Kingdom, IrelandPublisher:Wiley Publicly fundedFunded by:IRCIRCMoore, D.; Krishnamurthy, S.; Chao, Yimin; Wang, Q.; Brabazon, D.; McNally, P. J.;AbstractOver the last decade the progress in amorphous and nanocrystalline silicon (nc‐Si) for photovoltaic applications received significant interest in science and technology. Advances in the understanding of these novel materials and their properties are growing rapidly. In order to realise nc‐Si in the solar cell, a thicker intrinsic layer is required. Due to the indirect band gap in the crystallites, the absorption coefficients of nc‐Si are much lower. In this work we have used electrochemical etching techniques to produce silicon nanocrystals of the sizes 3–5 nm. Viable drop cast deposition of Si nanocrystals to increase the thickness without compromising the material properties was investigated by atomic force microscopy, optical microscopy, photoemission spectroscopy and optical absorption methods.

In this paper, an advanced electrothermal simulation strategy is applied to a 3.3 kV silicon carbide MOSFET power module. The approach is based on a full circuital representation of the module, where use is made of the thermal equivalent of the Ohm’s law. The individual transistors are described with subcircuits, while the dynamic power-temperature feedback is accounted for through an equivalent thermal network enriched with controlled sources enabling nonlinear thermal effects. A synchronous step-up DC-DC converter and a single-phase inverter, both incorporating the aforementioned power module, are simulated. Good accuracy was ensured by considering electromagnetic effects due to parasitics, which were experimentally extracted in a preliminary stage. Low CPU times are needed, and no convergence issues are encountered in spite of the high switching frequencies. The impact of some key parameters is effortlessly quantified. The analysis witnesses the efficiency and versatility of the approach, and suggests its adoption for design, analysis, and synthesis of high-frequency power converters in wide-band-gap semiconductor technology.

In this work, front contacts for graphene-based solar cells are made by means of colloidal graphite instead of gold. The performance is characterized by exploiting impedance spectroscopy and is compared to the standard gold contact technology. Impedance data are analysed through equivalent circuit representation in terms of lumped parameters, suitable to describe the complex impedance in the frequency range considered in the experiments. Using this approach, capacitance–voltage of the considered graphene–silicon solar cell is found and the barrier height forming at the graphene–silicon interface is extracted.

In this paper, we provide an overview of the MANGO project and its goal. The MANGO project aims at addressing power, performance and predictability (the PPP space) in future High-Performance Computing systems. It starts from the fundamental intuition that effective techniques for all three goals ultimately rely on customization to adapt the computing resources to reach the desired Quality of Service (QoS). From this starting point, MANGO will explore different but interrelated mechanisms at various architectural levels, as well as at the level of the system software. In particular, to explore a new positioning across the PPP space, MANGO will investigate system-wide, holistic, proactive thermal and power management aimed at extreme-scale energy efficiency. The MANGO project starts in October 2015 and is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 FET-HPC program. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 671668.

M.;A measurement of the underlying activity in scattering processes with a hard scale in the several GeV region is performed in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 7 TeV, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The production of charged particles with pseudorapidity |eta| < 2 and transverse momentum pT > 0.5 GeV/c is studied in the azimuthal region transverse to that of the leading set of charged particles forming a track-jet. A significant growth of the average multiplicity and scalar-pT sum of the particles in the transverse region is observed with increasing pT of the leading track-jet, followed by a much slower rise above a few GeV/c. For track-jet pT larger than a few GeV/c, the activity in the transverse region is approximately doubled with a centre-of-mass energy increase from 0.9 to 7 TeV. Predictions of several QCD-inspired models as implemented in PYTHIA are compared to the data. AbstractThe recent introduction of ever larger wind turbines poses new challenges with regard to understanding the mechanisms of unsteady flow–structure interaction. An important aspect of the problem is the aeroelastic stability of the wind turbine blades, especially in the case of combined flap/lead–lag vibrations in the stall regime. Given the limited experimental information available in this field, the use of CFD techniques and state‐of‐the‐art viscous flow solvers provides an invaluable alternative towards the identification of the underlying physics and the development and validation of sound engineering‐type aeroelastic models. Navier–Stokes‐based aeroelastic stability analysis of individual blade sections subjected to combined pitch/flap or flap/lead–lag motion has been attempted by the present consortium in the framework of the concluded VISCEL JOR3‐CT98‐0208 Joule III project. Main objective is the study of the antimatter component: antiprotons (80 MeV-190 GeV), positrons (50 MeV-270 GeV) and search for antimatter with a precision of the order of 10^-8). The experiment, housed on board the Russian Resurs-DK1 satellite, was launched on June, 15, 2006 in a 350*600 km orbit with an inclination of 70 degrees. The detector is composed of a series of scintillator counters arranged at the extremities of a permanent magnet spectrometer to provide charge, Time-of-Flight and rigidity information. Lepton/hadron identification is performed by a Silicon-Tungsten calorimeter and a Neutron detector placed at the bottom of the device. An Anticounter system is used offline to reject false triggers coming from the satellite. In self-trigger mode the Calorimeter, the neutron detector and a shower tail catcher are capable of an independent measure of the lepton component up to 2 TeV. In this work we describe the experiment, its scientific objectives and the performance in the first months after launch. Accepted for publication on Advances in Space Research

We theoretically consider a short quantum wire, which on both ends is connected to leads that have different temperatures. The quantum wire is assumed to be coupled to a cavity with a single-photon mode. We calculate the heat and thermoelectric currents in the quantum wire under the effect of the photon field. In the absence of the photon field, a plateau in the thermoelectric current is observed due to the thermal smearing at a high temperature gradient. In the presence of the resonance photon field, when the energy spacing between the lowest states of the quantum wire is approximately equal to the photon energy, a suppression in thermoelectric current and negativity in the heat current are seen due to the dressed electron-photon states. It is also found that the cavity with high photon energy has more influence on the thermoelectric current at a high temperature gradient.

The water-cooled lead lithium breeding blanket (WCLL BB) is one of two BB candidate concepts to be chosen as the driver blanket of the EU-DEMO fusion reactor. Research activities carried out in the past decade, under the umbrella of the EUROfusion consortium, have allowed a quite advanced reactor architecture to be achieved. Moreover, significant efforts have been made in order to develop the WCLL BB pre-conceptual design following a holistic approach, identifying interfaces between components and systems while respecting a system engineering approach. This paper reports a description of the current WCLL BB architecture, focusing on the latest modifications in the BB reference layout aimed at evolving the design from its pre-conceptual version into a robust conceptual layout. In particular, the main rationale behind design choices and the BB’s overall performances are highlighted. The present paper also gives an overview of the integration between the BB and the different in-vessel systems interacting with it. In particular, interfaces with the tritium extraction and removal (TER) system and the primary heat transfer system (PHTS) are described. Attention is also paid to auxiliary systems devoted to heat the plasma, such as electron cyclotron heating (ECH). Indeed, the integration of this system in the BB will strongly impact the segment design since it envisages the introduction of significant cut-outs in the BB layout. A preliminary CAD model of the central outboard blanket (COB) segment housing the ECH cut-out has been set up and is reported in this paper. The chosen modeling strategy, adopted loads and boundary conditions, as well as obtained results, are reported in the paper and critically discussed.
