AbstractThis paper argues that a focus on values, trust and context is vital to build a fuller understanding of public perceptions of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS). Empirical data from interviews conducted in the UK and Italy as part of the EU FP7-funded ECO2 project is presented to illustrate how publics and stakeholders often evaluate the geological storage of carbon dioxide in terms of its relation to their broader world views, rather than purely in terms of the perceived techno-scientific risks of the technology.

Starting from the relationship between urban planning and mobility management, TeMA has gradually expanded the view of the covered topics, always remaining in the groove of rigorous scientific in-depth analysis. This section of the Journal, Review Notes, is the expression of a continuous updating of emerging topics concerning relationships between urban planning, mobility and environment, through a collection of short scientific papers written by young researchers. The Review Notes are made of four parts. Each section examines a specific aspect of the broader information storage within the main interests of TeMA Journal. In particular, the Urban planning literature review section aims at presenting recent books and journals, within global scientific panorama, on selected topics and issues. This contribution aims at delving into the most severe effects due to heat waves and presenting three interesting and significant scientific books and journal that present effective adaptation strategies to limit climate crisis and improve Mediterranean resilience towards more frequent and severe heat waves. The second contribution of the Review Notes for TeMA vo. 15 highlights the need for integrated action to address the climate crisis in the Mediterranean region, bringing together the strengths and weaknesses of its shores, despite social, economic and political differences. Moreover, the extreme weather events that are occurring throughout Europe, from the south to the north, show how the Mediterranean area is particularly sensitive to climate change-related events.

New research has improved our understanding about the remaining options to achieve the Paris Agreement goals, through overcoming political barriers to carbon pricing, taking into account non-CO2factors, a well-designed implementation of demand-side and nature-based solutions, resilience building of ecosystems and the recognition that climate change mitigation costs can be justified by benefits to the health of humans and nature alone. We consider new insights about what to expect if we fail to include a new dimension of fire extremes and the prospect of cascading climate tipping elements.Technical summaryA synthesis is made of 10 topics within climate research, where there have been significant advances since January 2020. The insights are based on input from an international open call with broad disciplinary scope. Findings include: (1) the options to still keep global warming below 1.5 °C; (2) the impact of non-CO2factors in global warming; (3) a new dimension of fire extremes forced by climate change; (4) the increasing pressure on interconnected climate tipping elements; (5) the dimensions of climate justice; (6) political challenges impeding the effectiveness of carbon pricing; (7) demand-side solutions as vehicles of climate mitigation; (8) the potentials and caveats of nature-based solutions; (9) how building resilience of marine ecosystems is possible; and (10) that the costs of climate change mitigation policies can be more than justified by the benefits to the health of humans and nature.Social media summaryHow do we limit global warming to 1.5 °C and why is it crucial? In this study, a two-stage methodology based on the energy savings gained by optimal network reconductoring was developed for the sizing and allocation of electric vehicle (EV) charging load at the residential locations in urban distribution systems. During the first stage, the Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) was applied to minimize the annual energy losses of the radial distribution system through optimum network reconductoring. A multi-objective function was formulated to minimize investment, peak loss, and annual energy loss costs at different load factors. The results obtained with the flower pollination algorithm were compared with the particle swarm optimization algorithm. In the second stage, a simple heuristic procedure was developed for the sizing and allocation of EV charging load at every node of the distribution system utilizing part of the annual energy savings obtained by optimal network reconductoring. The number of electric cars, electric bikes, and electric scooters that can be charged at every node was computed while maintaining the voltage and branch current constraints. The simulation results were demonstrated on 123 bus and 51 bus radial distribution networks to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Currently, the electrification of transport networks is one of the initiatives being performed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the rapid advancement of power electronic systems for electrified transportation systems, their integration into the AC power grid generates a variety of quality issues in the electrical distribution system. Among the possible solutions to this challenge is the inclusion of continuous storage systems, which can be located either onboard or offboard. The rapid development of energy storage devices has enabled the creation of numerous solutions that are leading to ever-increasing energy consumption efficiency, particularly when two or more of these storage systems are linked in a cascade and a hybrid mode. The various energy storage systems that can be integrated into vehicle charging systems (cars, buses, and trains) are investigated in this study, as are their electrical models and the various hybrid storage systems that are available.

Nos centramos en el problema de la gestión del consumo energético de una red celular adaptada para cubrir zonas rurales y de bajos ingresos. La arquitectura considerada explota vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAV) para garantizar la cobertura inalámbrica, así como paneles solares (SP) y baterías instaladas en un conjunto de emplazamientos en tierra, que proporcionan la energía necesaria para recargar los UAV. El objetivo es maximizar la energía almacenada en los UAV y en los emplazamientos terrestres, garantizando la cobertura del territorio mediante la programación de las misiones de los UAV en el espacio y en el tiempo. Tras proporcionar la formulación del problema, nos enfrentamos a su complejidad proponiendo un enfoque basado en la descomposición y diseñando un algoritmo genético completamente nuevo. We focus on the problem of managing the energy consumption of a cellular network tailored to cover rural and low-income areas. The considered architecture exploits Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to ensure wireless coverage, as well as Solar Panels (SPs) and batteries installed in a set of ground sites, which provides the energy required to recharge the UAVs. We then target the maximization of the energy stored in the UAVs and in the ground sites, by ensuring the coverage of the territory through the scheduling of the UAV missions over space and time. After providing the problem formulation, we face its complexity by proposing a decomposition-based approach and by designing a brand-new genetic algorithm. The results, obtained over a set of representative case studies, reveal that there exists a trade-off between the UAVs battery level, the ground sites battery level, and the level of coverage. In addition, both the decomposed version and the genetic algorithm perform sufficiently close to the integrated model, with a strong improvement in the computation times. Plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) can be a main lever towards a decarbonised road transport system. The PEV market uptake needs to be nurtured by appropriate support measures for users, for technological advances related to the vehicle and its components, and for all relevant recharging infrastructure deployment. This paper focuses on the role of PEV recharging infrastructure for electric passenger car uptake in Europe. It examines the status of road transport electrification, relevant policies, incentives and national plans. We find that the status and plans of PEV and recharging infrastructure and the corresponding support measures vary significantly between countries. The PEV share in the various analysed countries ranged in 2017 from 0.01% to 5.49% and is estimated to reach values between 0.05% and 12.71% in 2020. The corresponding ratio of PEV per one publicly accessible recharging point ranged between 1 and 60 and is estimated to vary between 3 and 161 in 2020. Diverging plans could lead to market fragmentation in the European Union (EU) and impede the EU-wide circulation of PEVs. The appropriate level of recharging infrastructure should be determined to both support PEV deployment and to prevent sunk investments. Different country experiences vis-à-vis PEV and infrastructure support could be useful to identify best practices.

Floating offshore wind represents a new frontier of renewable energies. The absence of a fixed structure allows exploiting wind potential in deep seas, like the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, characterized by high availability and wind potential. However, a floating offshore wind system, which includes an offshore turbine, floating platform, moorings, anchors, and electrical system, requires very high capital investments: one of the most relevant cost items is the floating substructure. This work focuses on the choice of a floating platform that minimizes the global weight, in order to reduce the material cost, but ensuring buoyancy and static stability. Subsequently, the optimized platform is used to define a wind farm located near the island of Pantelleria, Italy in order to meet the island’s electricity needs. A sensitivity analysis to estimate the Levelized Cost Of Energy is presented, analyzing the parameters that influence it most, like Capacity Factor, Weighted Average Capital Cost (WACC) and number of wind turbines.

This paper studies the design of a mid-scale maritime supply chain for distribution of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from overseas sourcing locations, via a storage located at the coast, before transporting the LNG on land to industrial customers. The case company has signed contracts with a number of initial customers and expect that there will be more customers and increased demand in the years to come. However, it is currently uncertain whether and when new contracts will be signed. To capture this uncertainty with regard to which and how many future customers there will be, which directly affects the demand, we propose a multi-stage stochastic programming model, which maximizes the expected profits of the supply chain. The model aims at aiding decisions concerning the import of LNG, investments in floating storage units and customer distribution systems, and it has been applied on a real case study for distributing LNG to customers in a Brazilian state. It is shown that explicitly considering uncertainty in the modeling of this problem is very important, with a Value of Stochastic Solution of 13.2%, and that there are significant economies of scale in this supply chain. Most importantly, the multi-stage stochastic programming model and the analysis presented in this paper provided valuable decision support and managerial insights for the case company in its process of setting up the LNG supply chain.

Starting from the relationship between urban planning and mobility management, TeMA has gradually expanded the view of the covered topics, always following a rigorous scientific in-depth analysis. This section of the Journal, Review Notes, is a continuous update about emerging topics concerning relationships among urban planning, mobility, and environment, thanks to a collection of short scientific papers written by young researchers. The Review Notes are made up of five parts. Each section examines a specific aspect of the broader information storage within the main interests of the TeMA Journal. In particular: the Town Planning International Rules and Legislation. Section aims at presenting the latest updates in the territorial and urban legislative sphere. Accelerating the sustainable urban transition requires functional and structural changes in urban systems through which challenges such as the climate crisis are addressed. Researchers, professionals, policy makers in their various roles are trying to provide concrete proposals and actions to the challenge of climate change in cities from a sustainability perspective. The European Commission has also played a crucial role in providing forms of funding on the issue. In this direction, the paper examines precisely the European regulatory excursus starting from the climate law up to the EU Adaptation Strategy to increase the resilience of cities.

AbstractThis paper argues that a focus on values, trust and context is vital to build a fuller understanding of public perceptions of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS). Empirical data from interviews conducted in the UK and Italy as part of the EU FP7-funded ECO2 project is presented to illustrate how publics and stakeholders often evaluate the geological storage of carbon dioxide in terms of its relation to their broader world views, rather than purely in terms of the perceived techno-scientific risks of the technology.

In particular, the Urban planning literature review section aims at presenting recent books and journals, within global scientific panorama, on selected topics and issues. This contribution aims at delving into the most severe effects due to heat waves and presenting three interesting and significant scientific books and journal that present effective adaptation strategies to limit climate crisis and improve Mediterranean resilience towards more frequent and severe heat waves. The second contribution of the Review Notes for TeMA vo. 15 highlights the need for integrated action to address the climate crisis in the Mediterranean region, bringing together the strengths and weaknesses of its shores, despite social, economic and political differences. Moreover, the extreme weather events that are occurring throughout Europe, from the south to the north, show how the Mediterranean area is particularly sensitive to climate change-related events.

In this study, a two-stage methodology based on the energy savings gained by optimal network reconductoring was developed for the sizing and allocation of electric vehicle (EV) charging load at the residential locations in urban distribution systems. During the first stage, the Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) was applied to minimize the annual energy losses of the radial distribution system through optimum network reconductoring. A multi-objective function was formulated to minimize investment, peak loss, and annual energy loss costs at different load factors. The results obtained with the flower pollination algorithm were compared with the particle swarm optimization algorithm. In the second stage, a simple heuristic procedure was developed for the sizing and allocation of EV charging load at every node of the distribution system utilizing part of the annual energy savings obtained by optimal network reconductoring. The number of electric cars, electric bikes, and electric scooters that can be charged at every node was computed while maintaining the voltage and branch current constraints. The simulation results were demonstrated on 123 bus and 51 bus radial distribution networks to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Currently, the electrification of transport networks is one of the initiatives being performed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the rapid advancement of power electronic systems for electrified transportation systems, their integration into the AC power grid generates a variety of quality issues in the electrical distribution system. Among the possible solutions to this challenge is the inclusion of continuous storage systems, which can be located either onboard or offboard. The rapid development of energy storage devices has enabled the creation of numerous solutions that are leading to ever-increasing energy consumption efficiency, particularly when two or more of these storage systems are linked in a cascade and a hybrid mode. The various energy storage systems that can be integrated into vehicle charging systems (cars, buses, and trains) are investigated in this study, as are their electrical models and the various hybrid storage systems that are available.

Nos centramos en el problema de la gestión del consumo energético de una red celular adaptada para cubrir zonas rurales y de bajos ingresos. La arquitectura considerada explota vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAV) para garantizar la cobertura inalámbrica, así como paneles solares (SP) y baterías instaladas en un conjunto de emplazamientos en tierra, que proporcionan la energía necesaria para recargar los UAV. El objetivo es maximizar la energía almacenada en los UAV y en los emplazamientos terrestres, garantizando la cobertura del territorio mediante la programación de las misiones de los UAV en el espacio y en el tiempo. Tras proporcionar la formulación del problema, nos enfrentamos a su complejidad proponiendo un enfoque basado en la descomposición y diseñando un algoritmo genético completamente nuevo. Los resultados, obtenidos a partir de un conjunto de casos representativos, revelan que existe un equilibrio entre el nivel de batería de los UAV, el nivel de batería de los emplazamientos en tierra y el nivel de cobertura. Además, tanto la versión descompuesta como el algoritmo genético se aproximan lo suficiente al modelo integrado, con una fuerte mejora en los tiempos de cálculo. We focus on the problem of managing the energy consumption of a cellular network tailored to cover rural and low-income areas. The considered architecture exploits Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to ensure wireless coverage, as well as Solar Panels (SPs) and batteries installed in a set of ground sites, which provides the energy required to recharge the UAVs. We then target the maximization of the energy stored in the UAVs and in the ground sites, by ensuring the coverage of the territory through the scheduling of the UAV missions over space and time. After providing the problem formulation, we face its complexity by proposing a decomposition-based approach and by designing a brand-new genetic algorithm. The results, obtained over a set of representative case studies, reveal that there exists a trade-off between the UAVs battery level, the ground sites battery level, and the level of coverage. In addition, both the decomposed version and the genetic algorithm perform sufficiently close to the integrated model, with a strong improvement in the computation times. Plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) can be a main lever towards a decarbonised road transport system. The PEV market uptake needs to be nurtured by appropriate support measures for users, for technological advances related to the vehicle and its components, and for all relevant recharging infrastructure deployment. This paper focuses on the role of PEV recharging infrastructure for electric passenger car uptake in Europe. It examines the status of road transport electrification, relevant policies, incentives and national plans. We find that the status and plans of PEV and recharging infrastructure and the corresponding support measures vary significantly between countries. The PEV share in the various analysed countries ranged in 2017 from 0.01% to 5.49% and is estimated to reach values between 0.05% and 12.71% in 2020. The corresponding ratio of PEV per one publicly accessible recharging point ranged between 1 and 60 and is estimated to vary between 3 and 161 in 2020. Diverging plans could lead to market fragmentation in the European Union (EU) and impede the EU-wide circulation of PEVs. The appropriate level of recharging infrastructure should be determined to both support PEV deployment and to prevent sunk investments. Different country experiences vis-à-vis PEV and infrastructure support could be useful to identify best practices.

Floating offshore wind represents a new frontier of renewable energies. The absence of a fixed structure allows exploiting wind potential in deep seas, like the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, characterized by high availability and wind potential. However, a floating offshore wind system, which includes an offshore turbine, floating platform, moorings, anchors, and electrical system, requires very high capital investments: one of the most relevant cost items is the floating substructure. This work focuses on the choice of a floating platform that minimizes the global weight, in order to reduce the material cost, but ensuring buoyancy and static stability. Subsequently, the optimized platform is used to define a wind farm located near the island of Pantelleria, Italy in order to meet the island’s electricity needs. A sensitivity analysis to estimate the Levelized Cost Of Energy is presented, analyzing the parameters that influence it most, like Capacity Factor, Weighted Average Capital Cost (WACC) and number of wind turbines.

This paper studies the design of a mid-scale maritime supply chain for distribution of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from overseas sourcing locations, via a storage located at the coast, before transporting the LNG on land to industrial customers. The case company has signed contracts with a number of initial customers and expect that there will be more customers and increased demand in the years to come. However, it is currently uncertain whether and when new contracts will be signed. To capture this uncertainty with regard to which and how many future customers there will be, which directly affects the demand, we propose a multi-stage stochastic programming model, which maximizes the expected profits of the supply chain. The model aims at aiding decisions concerning the import of LNG, investments in floating storage units and customer distribution systems, and it has been applied on a real case study for distributing LNG to customers in a Brazilian state. It is shown that explicitly considering uncertainty in the modeling of this problem is very important, with a Value of Stochastic Solution of 13.2%, and that there are significant economies of scale in this supply chain. Most importantly, the multi-stage stochastic programming model and the analysis presented in this paper provided valuable decision support and managerial insights for the case company in its process of setting up the LNG supply chain.

Starting from the relationship between urban planning and mobility management, TeMA has gradually expanded the view of the covered topics, always following a rigorous scientific in-depth analysis. This section of the Journal, Review Notes, is a continuous update about emerging topics concerning relationships among urban planning, mobility, and environment, thanks to a collection of short scientific papers written by young researchers. The Review Notes are made up of five parts. Each section examines a specific aspect of the broader information storage within the main interests of the TeMA Journal. In particular: the Town Planning International Rules and Legislation. Section aims at presenting the latest updates in the territorial and urban legislative sphere. Accelerating the sustainable urban transition requires functional and structural changes in urban systems through which challenges such as the climate crisis are addressed. Researchers, professionals, policy makers in their various roles are trying to provide concrete proposals and actions to the challenge of climate change in cities from a sustainability perspective. The European Commission has also played a crucial role in providing forms of funding on the issue. In this direction, the paper examines precisely the European regulatory excursus starting from the climate law up to the EU Adaptation Strategy to increase the resilience of cities.
