    Authors: Grubler, Arnulf; Wilson, Charlie; Bento, Nuno; Boza-Kiss, Benigna; +17 Authors

    The database presents the scenario results of an exploratory research, carried out at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA): the Low Energy Demand (LED) study (Grubler et al. 2018). The LED scenario explored how far transformative changes that combine technological changes, end-use efficiency, and new business models for energy service provision can lead for lowering energy demand, and how these changes could drive deep decarbonisation in the long-term. The scenario development methodology included a bottom-up analysis of how currently existing, though often embryonic, social, institutional, and technological trends could become mainstream with resulting step-changes in efficiency and resulting lowered energy demand. The bottom-up demand estimations were then further explored for their supply side and emissions and climate implications with a top-down modeling framework drawing on the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) framework (Riahi et al. 2017). The results show that global final energy demands can be drastically reduced in 2050, to around 245 EJ/yr, or 40% lower than today, whilst significantly expanding human welfare and reducing global development inequalities. According to the knowledge of the authors, LED is the lowest long-term global energy demand scenario ever published. The LED scenario meets the 1.5°C climate target in 2100 without overshoot and keeps the global mean temperature increase below 1.5°C with a probability of more than 60%, without requiring controversial negative emission technologies, such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), that figure prominently in the emission scenario literature (Rogelj et al. 2015, Anderson and Peters 2016, Creutzig et al. 2016, Smith et al. 2016). Furthermore, the beneficial impacts of the LED scenario on a range of other sustainable development goals are also shown, demonstrating that efficiency of energy services provision plays a critical role in reaching low-energy futures without compromising increased living standards in the Global South, while at the same time reducing adverse social and environmental impacts of climate mitigation strategies that focus predominantly on large-scale supply-side transformations. The research is published in a peer-reviewed article in Nature Energy (Grubler et al. 2018) with ample supplementary information. Water consumption and withdrawal data are published in Parkinson et al. (2018). The data is available for download from the LED Database. The content of the LED database and any derived analysis may only be used for non-commercial scientific publications, articles, educational purposes, figures and data tables provided that the source reference pursuant to section 'Required citation' is included and all relevant publications are correctly cited. Partial reproductions of the database content may be stored in online repositories, if this is necessary to comply with a journal's data archiving and access requirements. Such reproductions must be limited to the scope of the manuscript in question, and must include a hyperlink to the source database hosted at https://db1.ene.iiasa.ac.at/LEDDB and the download date from the source database. However, any wholesale duplication, translation, reworking, processing, arrangement, transformation, or reproduction through the internet or any other channels, of the https://db1.ene.iiasa.ac.at/LEDDEB for commercial or non-commercial purposes is not permitted without the explicit written approval of IIASA.

    Authors: Ingridsdotter, Jenny; Vallström, Maria;

    Under sommaren 2018 utbröt de hittills största skogsbränderna i svensk modern historia. Dessa bränder hade stor inverkan på lokalsamhällen och skogsbruket, och startade även nationella debatter om klimatförändringar, skogsbruk, biologisk mångfald och de infrastrukturella utmaningarna för beredskap inför extremt väder. Syftet med detta projekt är att studera hur lokalsamhällen som särskilt drabbats av skogsbränderna 2018 mobiliserade lokala resurser för att hantera krisen, hur drabbade berättar om krisen och dess efterdyningar och vad krisen ledde till när det gäller strategier och medvetenhet om hållbar utveckling i framtiden. Genom digital etnografi, kvalitativa intervjuer och fokusgruppsintervjuer undersöks tre frågor: 1. Hur agerade boende och andra engagerade i lokalsamhällen under skogsbranden? 2. Hur minns och berättar människor om skogsbranden? 3. Påverkar lokal historia och skogsbrukstraditioner och praktiker hur lokalsamhällen föreställer sig möjliga scenarier för framtiden? Genom ett etnografiskt tillvägagångssätt önskar vi fånga spänningarna mellan det som varit, det som är och den möjliga framtiden, med utgångspunkt att avtäcka potentialen för motståndskraftiga samhällen i en värld av globala klimatförändringar. Studien bidrar med etnografisk kunskap om hur katastrofer kan hanteras och hur de ändrar individuella och kollektiva kulturella normer och föreställningar om tid, liksom hantering av resurser i lokalsamhällen. Datamaterialet består av pseudonymiserade intervjuer med drabbade i bygderna. Tillgänglig metadata beskriver intervjuerna. In the summer of 2018, wildfires erupted in Swedish forests at a magnitude without precedence in modern Swedish history. The purpose of this project is to study how local communities particularly affected by the wildfires in 2018 mobilized local resources to cope with the crisis, how local residents narrate the crisis and its aftermath, and what the crisis led to in terms of strategies and awareness of sustainable development in the future. Through digital ethnography, qualitative interviews and focus group interviews the project examines three questions: 1. How did local residents act during the actual events of the wildfire? 2. How are the wildfires and the mobilizations remembered and narrated? 3. Does local history and forestry traditions and practices impact on how local communities imagine possible futures? Through an ethnographic approach, we wish to capture the tensions between the past, the present and the possible future, with the idea of trying to show the potential for resilient communities in a world of global climate change. This study contributes ethnographic insight into how disaster can be managed and how it changes individual and collective cultural norms and conceptions of time, as well as management of resources in local communities. The data consists of pseudonymized transcripts of interviews. Accessible metadata describes the interviews.

    This research is supported by SEACAMS2 which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and focuses on the convergence region of Wales. This particular research project is a follow on from a Fujitsu and HPC Wales (now Supercomputing Wales) funded PhD research project supervised by Dr Simon Neill, Bangor University. The tidal array representation method implemented in this modeling tool is based on a tidal turbine parameterisation method, accounting for the momentum capture for each individual device/array. This method is based upon the research described by Roc et al. 2013 & 2014. Each turbine behaviour is tuned via the drag coefficient, namely Ct, respectively relating to the thrust coefficient. This tidal array representation method has been implemented as a smeared drag-force at across user-defined depth layers within a large-scale ocean circulation modeling system that is the Regional Ocean Modeling System, ROMS. ROMS is an open-source 3-D model which solves the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations using a Boussinesq approximation on a structured horizontal grid with terrain following sigma layers[3]. Note that ROMS/TOMS version 3.7 - revision 898, is used in the current distribution of ROMS-Tidal Array. The turbine representation module is applied using the following files: roms_src/ROMS/External/varinfo.dat roms_src/ROMS/Include/cppdefs.h roms_src/ROMS/Nonlinear/initial.F roms_src/ROMS/Nonlinear/rhs3d.F roms_src/ROMS/Utility/def_info.F roms_src/ROMS/Utility/checkdefs.F roms_src/ROMS/Utility/wrt_info.F roms_src/ROMS/Utility/read_phypar.F roms_src/ROMS/Modules/mod_ncparam.F roms_src/ROMS/Modules/mod_iounits.F roms_src/ROMS/Modules/mod_arrays.F roms_src/ROMS/Modules/mod_trb.F Modification to ROMS src for the inclusion of tidal energy extraction

    Dataset Province of South Holland: data collection took place in December 2020 – April 2021; the data was collected using the Dutch pre-paid panel Panelinzicht. Datasets Municipality Gorinchem Phase 1 & Phase 2: We conducted a questionnaire study among the inhabitants of the municipality of Gorinchem living within a 500m-2000m distance from where the wind park would potentially be sited. Data gathering took place in two phases, which corresponded to two key moments in the Municipality’s initiated public participation activities regarding the possibility of placing the wind turbines. The first phase of data gathering took place in February-March 2022, at the very beginning of the participatory process. The second phase of data gathering took place in September, 2022, after the Municipality has finalised the public participation procedure.

    A raster file (TIFF with geo reference, 16 bit unsigned Integer) of 100m resolution that shows the number of households per hectare. Input is the JRC 100m population raster (https://data.europa.eu/euodp/en/data/dataset/jrc-ghsl-ghs_pop_eurostat_europe_r2016a). Population in families by size (Eurostat cens_11fts_r3_1) and NUTS3 district (2010) as well as total population per NUTS3 district (cens_11ag_r3) have been used to calculate the number of households per NUTS3 district (except for Finland, where this information is only available on the NUTS2 level). The number of households per hectare is then calculated as the number of people per ha divided by the average number of people per household (NUTS3).

    Authors: SOM Institute, University Of Gothenburg;

    För att kunna förstå hur samhällsutvecklingen påverkar svenska folkets attityder och beteenden, har SOM-institutet sedan 1986 genomfört Riks-SOM. Första mätningen skedde genom samverkan mellan ett par forskningsprojekt vid Göteborgs universitet, men intresset för resultaten blev stort och SOM-institutet etablerades med ansvar att göra en ny undersökning varje höst. Den nationella SOM-undersökningen fokuserar på tre teman - samhälle, opinion och massmedier. Ett stort antal frågor om politik, samhälle och medier samt social bakgrund finns med i alla undersökningar, men frågeformulären har ibland något olika inriktningar. Undersökningen genomförs i samverkan med forskare från olika discipliner. I undersökningen deltar också externa parter, via särskilda forskningsprojekt. För 2018 gäller det exempelvis Kulturdepartementet, Energimyndigheten och Försäkringskassan. 2018 års undersökning utgjordes av sex parallella riksrepresentativa delundersökningar där datainsamlingen genomfördes parallellt enligt en gemensam fältplan. De sex formulären innehåller många gemensamma frågor, men undersökningen innehåller också ett stort antal frågor endast ställda i en eller två av de olika enkäterna. Datainsamlingen genomfördes parallellt och under identiska förhållanden. För sjunde året i rad användes en mixed mode undersökningsdesign, vilket innebär att flera datainsamlingsmetoder används i en och samma frågeundersökning. I SOM-undersökningen samlas data primärt in via postenkäter, men respondenten ges även möjlighet att fylla i en webbenkät. Syfte: Huvudsyftet är att etablera tidsserier som gör det möjligt att analysera hur olika samhällsförändringar påverkar människors attityder och beteenden. In order to identify how the evolution of society affects Swedes’ attitudes and behaviour, the SOM Institute started its National SOM study in 1986. National SOM addresses three areas - society, opinion and mass media - and consists of several parallel surveys. All surveys include a large number of questions related to politics, society, media and social background, but their areas of focus differ. In 2018, six different questionnaires were distributed. Purpose: The main purpose is to establish time series that enable researchers to analyse how various changes in society affect people's attitudes and behaviour.

    Aquaculture is vital to Egypt’s economy and food security, with farmed fish accounting for 78% of all aquatic foods consumed domestically. The industry has progressed from traditional extensive systems to modern semi-intensive and intensive systems, driven by government policies and private investments. However, the sector also exerts significant environmental pressures through resource use and emissions, highlighting the need for sustainability improvements. A detailed baseline survey was conducted in Kafr el Sheikh, Port Said, Sharkia, Beheira, and Damietta Governorates, covering 300 tilapia aquaculture farms, hatcheries, and women retailers. The survey included interviews with farm and hatchery owners, managers, and women participants. The data collected provides an overview of the status and utilization of renewable energy among different aquaculture value chain actors. It assesses the cost-effectiveness of renewable energy-powered technologies within the aquaculture value chain in Egypt, identifies critical factors limiting the use of renewable energy, and explores opportunities for women and youth empowerment within the sector. The analysis also considers climate change constraints and examines various renewable energy solutions for Egyptian aquaculture farms, focusing on tilapia as the most widely produced species. Additionally, the report reflects on the potential benefits of these solutions in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from Egyptian aquaculture, while briefly considering the socioeconomic implications and feasibility of these interventions. The use of renewable energy sources is growing rapidly as an alternative to conventional sources and it has been argued that community-based renewable and non-renewable energy projects found on public participation are more likely to be accepted by the public than top-down large schemes and may bring additional benefits, such as increased cooperation on sustainable energy issues. Authors: Grubler, Arnulf; Wilson, Charlie; Bento, Nuno; Boza-Kiss, Benigna; +17 Authors

    The database presents the scenario results of an exploratory research, carried out at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA): the Low Energy Demand (LED) study (Grubler et al. 2018). The LED scenario explored how far transformative changes that combine technological changes, end-use efficiency, and new business models for energy service provision can lead for lowering energy demand, and how these changes could drive deep decarbonisation in the long-term. The scenario development methodology included a bottom-up analysis of how currently existing, though often embryonic, social, institutional, and technological trends could become mainstream with resulting step-changes in efficiency and resulting lowered energy demand. The bottom-up demand estimations were then further explored for their supply side and emissions and climate implications with a top-down modeling framework drawing on the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) framework (Riahi et al. 2017). The results show that global final energy demands can be drastically reduced in 2050, to around 245 EJ/yr, or 40% lower than today, whilst significantly expanding human welfare and reducing global development inequalities. According to the knowledge of the authors, LED is the lowest long-term global energy demand scenario ever published. The LED scenario meets the 1.5°C climate target in 2100 without overshoot and keeps the global mean temperature increase below 1.5°C with a probability of more than 60%, without requiring controversial negative emission technologies, such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), that figure prominently in the emission scenario literature (Rogelj et al. 2015, Anderson and Peters 2016, Creutzig et al. 2016, Smith et al. 2016). Furthermore, the beneficial impacts of the LED scenario on a range of other sustainable development goals are also shown, demonstrating that efficiency of energy services provision plays a critical role in reaching low-energy futures without compromising increased living standards in the Global South, while at the same time reducing adverse social and environmental impacts of climate mitigation strategies that focus predominantly on large-scale supply-side transformations. The research is published in a peer-reviewed article in Nature Energy (Grubler et al. 2018) with ample supplementary information. Water consumption and withdrawal data are published in Parkinson et al. (2018). The data is available for download from the LED Database. The content of the LED database and any derived analysis may only be used for non-commercial scientific publications, articles, educational purposes, figures and data tables provided that the source reference pursuant to section 'Required citation' is included and all relevant publications are correctly cited.     Authors: Ingridsdotter, Jenny; Vallström, Maria;

    Authors: Goward Brown, Alice; Roc, Thomas; Spall, Steve;

    Authors: SOM Institute, University Of Gothenburg;

Type: Dataset; Sub-type(s): Other (Renewable energy in aquaculture value chain)
