In contrast to the traditional solid bitumen modifier, for example, rubber and thermoplastic elastomers, the PRM as a liquid modifier has more significant advantages in reducing energy consumption and improving asphalt performance, which has attracted widespread attention. However, the aging resistance and its mechanism are not clear. In view of this, the aging performance of two PRM-modified bitumen (PRM-70 and PRM-90), under the short-term thermo-oxidative aging, long-term thermo-oxidative aging, and ultraviolet (UV) aging conditions, was investigated through chemical and mechanical methods. The results show that the PRM-90 is more susceptible to the thermos-oxidative aging and UV aging. The use of low-penetration-grade bitumen and ensuring an adequate reaction are beneficial to enhance the aging resistance of PRM-modified bitumen. The impact of aging on high-temperature performance of PRM-modified bitumen is great, followed by the low-temperature performance and the anti-fatigue performance. The mechanic-relevant rheological aging index (RAI) and fracture energy index (FEI) are recommended to evaluate aging properties for PRM-modified bitumen. This study not only provides support for further research on the relationship between the aging properties and mechanical performance of PRM-modified bitumen, but also provides a reference for conducting mechanism analysis.

This study aims to investigate the effect of using PPWC filler to replace limestone filler on the road performance of asphalt concrete. Firstly, PPWC was ground into filler particles with a diameter less than 0.075 mm. The particle characteristics such as surface morphology, particle size distribution and chemical composition of PPWC filler and limestone filler were compared. Then, PPWC filler was used to replace limestone filler with different volume fractions to prepare asphalt concrete, and the water damage resistance, high-temperature rutting resistance, low-temperature crack resistance, fatigue resistance and adhesion performance of asphalt concrete were tested. The results showed that PPWC filler has a smaller particle size and rougher surface than limestone filler, and it contains Ca(OH)2 produced by hydration. The addition of PPWC filler can effectively improve the mechanical properties of asphalt concrete without reducing its water damage resistance. PPWC filler can improve the high-temperature rutting resistance and low-temperature crack resistance of asphalt concrete, but reduce its low-temperature fatigue resistance. The low content of PPWC filler will enhance the adhesion between asphalt mortar and aggregate. However, when the content of PPWC filler exceeds 50%, Ca (OH)2 in PPWC will reduce the adhesion between acid asphalt mortar and alkaline basalt aggregate. Therefore, the use of PPWC as filler in asphalt mixtures provides a reliable solution for the sustainable development of road materials.

Challenges posed by common extraction and recovery methods may result in misjudgment of asphalt pavement performance. In this study, we investigate the optimization of extraction and recovery processes in recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) recycling, aiming to promote sustainable development within the pavement engineering sector. We prepared eleven asphalt samples to simulate common extraction and recovery scenarios, using virgin SBS-modified asphalt as a reference. Employing Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) testing, we assessed the samples' rheological and chemical properties. We pointed out three common but easily overlooked problems in the extraction and recovery process, namely residual mineral powder, residual trichloroethylene, and incomplete extraction. Residual mineral powder and trichloroethylene greatly influence extraction recovery accuracy; high-speed centrifugation effectively addresses trichloroethylene, but completely removing mineral powder remains challenging. Accurate evaluation of residual substances in recycled asphalt is achievable through FTIR, TGA, and rheological tests, providing valuable insights for material selection and processing. Additionally, it is crucial to fully recover the binder from RAP for precise performance evaluation, as the binder's interior exhibits lower aging levels compared to the surface. This aging heterogeneity should be considered when assessing RAP performance and developing effective rehabilitation strategies. Our findings hold significant implications for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of extraction and recovery processes in RAP recycling, ultimately contributing to sustainable development in pavement engineering. In this study, the cold bonded pelletizing technique is applied to produce artificial lightweight aggregates using BAF and other industrial waste powders, as a way of recycling BAF mainly. The properties of the produced aggregates are determined and compared with other artificial aggregates. Moreover, the growth mechanism of the pellet with BAF and the role of BAF on pellet strength are addressed. The leaching properties of this aggregate are evaluated according to the environmental legislation. In addition, this aggregate is used as natural aggregate replacement in concrete to investigate its influence on concrete properties.

Nowadays the construction industry is by far the most resource intense industry sector, approximately 40-50% of all primary raw materials are used, which raises the question about the architects and engineer’s accountability. In this context and as a result of the Paris Climate agreement the Dutch government defined the program “Nederland Circulair in 2050”, which states the ambition to use 50% less primary materials in 2030 and to have a full circular economy in 2050.</p><p>One possible approach to achieve these ambitious goals is the application of renewable, bio-based materials in the built environment and to replace traditional, typically cement-based, materials. Already in the past natural building materials, such as timber and bamboo have been used widely, but in recent years new materials came up and provide new opportunities to be used in the construction industry. The authors explored various alternatives, such as hemp and flax fibres, mycelium and lignin-based fibres for composite materials, which will be described with various experimental and realised case studies.</p>

The alarming cost of the associated reduction of the service life of structures, which is estimated to cost 3% to 4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of industrialized countries, has put the spotlight on the importance of introducing the issue of climate change on the new generation of Eurocodes. Amongst the strategies to tackle the problem, design-phase measures seem not to be always cost- effective, nevertheless, measures during service-life are generally the most expensive. This paper discusses the potential strategies to be addressed by structural codes to tackle the problem of climate change-induced corrosion, considering aspects such as the cost-benefit analysis, viability, and the large uncertainty involved in climate change evolution.</p>

Microwave heating is an effective method to achieve autonomic crack healing in asphalt mixtures, and the use of microwave-absorbing materials can largely improve this healing efficiency. As a solid waste, coal gangue contains metal oxides, which shows the possibility of microwave heating. In order to further promote the application of coal gangue in the microwave healing of asphalt mixtures, this study looks into the synergistic effect of basalt and coal gangue powder (CGP) on the microwave heating self-healing of an asphalt mixture. The mechanical performance, water stability, low-temperature crack resistance and microwave healing efficiency of the asphalt mixture were investigated using the immersion Marshall test, standard Marshall test, Cantabro test and semi-circular bending (SCB), and healing tests, respectively. The results indicated that the addition of CGP in asphalt mixture can improve the microwave heating speed, which also showed a significant advantage in water stability and fracture energy recovery. The research results will further promote the utilization rate of coal gangue.

This study aims to investigate the effect of using PPWC filler to replace limestone filler on the road performance of asphalt concrete. Firstly, PPWC was ground into filler particles with a diameter less than 0.075 mm. The particle characteristics such as surface morphology, particle size distribution and chemical composition of PPWC filler and limestone filler were compared. Then, PPWC filler was used to replace limestone filler with different volume fractions to prepare asphalt concrete, and the water damage resistance, high-temperature rutting resistance, low-temperature crack resistance, fatigue resistance and adhesion performance of asphalt concrete were tested. The results showed that PPWC filler has a smaller particle size and rougher surface than limestone filler, and it contains Ca(OH)2 produced by hydration. The addition of PPWC filler can effectively improve the mechanical properties of asphalt concrete without reducing its water damage resistance. PPWC filler can improve the high-temperature rutting resistance and low-temperature crack resistance of asphalt concrete, but reduce its low-temperature fatigue resistance. The low content of PPWC filler will enhance the adhesion between asphalt mortar and aggregate. However, when the content of PPWC filler exceeds 50%, Ca (OH)2 in PPWC will reduce the adhesion between acid asphalt mortar and alkaline basalt aggregate. Therefore, the use of PPWC as filler in asphalt mixtures provides a reliable solution for the sustainable development of road materials.

Challenges posed by common extraction and recovery methods may result in misjudgment of asphalt pavement performance. In this study, we investigate the optimization of extraction and recovery processes in recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) recycling, aiming to promote sustainable development within the pavement engineering sector. We prepared eleven asphalt samples to simulate common extraction and recovery scenarios, using virgin SBS-modified asphalt as a reference. Employing Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) testing, we assessed the samples' rheological and chemical properties. We pointed out three common but easily overlooked problems in the extraction and recovery process, namely residual mineral powder, residual trichloroethylene, and incomplete extraction. Residual mineral powder and trichloroethylene greatly influence extraction recovery accuracy; high-speed centrifugation effectively addresses trichloroethylene, but completely removing mineral powder remains challenging. Accurate evaluation of residual substances in recycled asphalt is achievable through FTIR, TGA, and rheological tests, providing valuable insights for material selection and processing. Additionally, it is crucial to fully recover the binder from RAP for precise performance evaluation, as the binder's interior exhibits lower aging levels compared to the surface. This aging heterogeneity should be considered when assessing RAP performance and developing effective rehabilitation strategies. Our findings hold significant implications for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of extraction and recovery processes in RAP recycling, ultimately contributing to sustainable development in pavement engineering. In this study, the cold bonded pelletizing technique is applied to produce artificial lightweight aggregates using BAF and other industrial waste powders, as a way of recycling BAF mainly. The properties of the produced aggregates are determined and compared with other artificial aggregates. Moreover, the growth mechanism of the pellet with BAF and the role of BAF on pellet strength are addressed. The leaching properties of this aggregate are evaluated according to the environmental legislation. In addition, this aggregate is used as natural aggregate replacement in concrete to investigate its influence on concrete properties.

Nowadays the construction industry is by far the most resource intense industry sector, approximately 40-50% of all primary raw materials are used, which raises the question about the architects and engineer’s accountability. In this context and as a result of the Paris Climate agreement the Dutch government defined the program “Nederland Circulair in 2050”, which states the ambition to use 50% less primary materials in 2030 and to have a full circular economy in 2050.</p><p>One possible approach to achieve these ambitious goals is the application of renewable, bio-based materials in the built environment and to replace traditional, typically cement-based, materials. Already in the past natural building materials, such as timber and bamboo have been used widely, but in recent years new materials came up and provide new opportunities to be used in the construction industry. The authors explored various alternatives, such as hemp and flax fibres, mycelium and lignin-based fibres for composite materials, which will be described with various experimental and realised case studies.</p>

The alarming cost of the associated reduction of the service life of structures, which is estimated to cost 3% to 4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of industrialized countries, has put the spotlight on the importance of introducing the issue of climate change on the new generation of Eurocodes. Amongst the strategies to tackle the problem, design-phase measures seem not to be always cost- effective, nevertheless, measures during service-life are generally the most expensive. This paper discusses the potential strategies to be addressed by structural codes to tackle the problem of climate change-induced corrosion, considering aspects such as the cost-benefit analysis, viability, and the large uncertainty involved in climate change evolution.</p>

Microwave heating is an effective method to achieve autonomic crack healing in asphalt mixtures, and the use of microwave-absorbing materials can largely improve this healing efficiency. As a solid waste, coal gangue contains metal oxides, which shows the possibility of microwave heating. In order to further promote the application of coal gangue in the microwave healing of asphalt mixtures, this study looks into the synergistic effect of basalt and coal gangue powder (CGP) on the microwave heating self-healing of an asphalt mixture. The mechanical performance, water stability, low-temperature crack resistance and microwave healing efficiency of the asphalt mixture were investigated using the immersion Marshall test, standard Marshall test, Cantabro test and semi-circular bending (SCB), and healing tests, respectively. The results indicated that the addition of CGP in asphalt mixture can improve the microwave heating speed, which also showed a significant advantage in water stability and fracture energy recovery. The research results will further promote the utilization rate of coal gangue.
