    AbstractWheat is one of the world’s most favoured food sources, reaching millions of people on a daily basis. However, its production has climatic consequences. Fuel, inorganic fertilizers and pesticides used in wheat production emit greenhouse gases that can contribute negatively to climate change. It is unknown whether adopting alternative farming practices will increase crop yield while reducing carbon emissions. Here we quantify the carbon footprint of alternative wheat production systems suited to semiarid environments. We find that integrating improved farming practices (that is, fertilizing crops based on soil tests, reducing summerfallow frequencies and rotating cereals with grain legumes) lowers wheat carbon footprint effectively, averaging −256 kg CO2 eq ha−1 per year. For each kg of wheat grain produced, a net 0.027–0.377 kg CO2 eq is sequestered into the soil. With the suite of improved farming practices, wheat takes up more CO2 from the atmosphere than is actually emitted during its production.

    In a 10-year (1996–2005) biodiversity experiment, the mechanisms underlying the increasingly positive effect of biodiversity on plant biomass production shifted from sampling to complementarity over time. The effect of diversity on plant biomass was associated primarily with the accumulation of higher total plant nitrogen pools (N g m −2 ) and secondarily with more efficient N use at higher diversity. The accumulation of N in living plant biomass was significantly increased by the presence of legumes, C4 grasses, and their combined presence. Thus, these results provide clear evidence for the increasing effects of complementarity through time and suggest a mechanism whereby diversity increases complementarity through the increased input and retention of N, a commonly limiting nutrient.

    AbstractSeed size and composition are important traits in food crops and can be affected by nutrient availability in the soil. Phosphorus (P) is a non‐renewable, essential macronutrient, and P deficiency limits soybean (Glycine max) yield and quality. To investigate the associations of seed traits in low‐ and high‐P environments, soybean recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a cross of cultivars Fiskeby III and Mandarin (Ottawa) were grown under contrasting P availability environments. Traits including individual seed weight, seed number, and intact mature pod weight were significantly affected by soil P levels and showed transgressive segregation among the RILs. Surprisingly, P treatments did not affect seed composition or weight, suggesting that soybean maintains sufficient P in seeds even in low‐P soil. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were detected for seed weight, intact pods, seed volume, and seed protein, with five significant QTLs identified in low‐P environments and one significant QTL found in the optimal‐P environment. Broad‐sense heritability estimates were 0.78 (individual seed weight), 0.90 (seed protein), 0.34 (seed oil), and 0.98 (seed number). The QTLs identified under low P point to genetic regions that may be useful to improve soybean performance under limiting P conditions.

    Woody plant species in temperate regions must withstand a cold winter and freezing events through cold acclimation and dormancy in autumn and winter. However, how seasonal changes in dormancy depth and cold hardiness affect the frost risk of temperate species is unclear because few studies have assessed dormancy depth and cold hardiness simultaneously. In this study, an experiment was conducted to estimate the dormancy depth and cold hardiness of five common woody temperate plant species during the winter of 2018/2019 in Beijing, China. Twigs of each species were collected at different dates during winter and the timing of budburst was monitored under the same forcing conditions. The dormancy depth was quantified as growing degree day (GDD) requirements of spring events. Simultaneously, the cold hardiness of buds at each sampling date was determined based on the electrical conductivity of the holding solution. Two indices (chilling accumulation and cold hardiness index) were used to simulate the past dynamics of dormancy depth, spring phenology, and cold hardiness from 1952 to 2021. The maximum dormancy depth of the study species was observed between early October and early December, and thereafter decreased exponentially. The cold hardiness peaked in mid-winter (end of December) through cold acclimation and thereafter decreased in spring (deacclimation). During the past 70 years, the budburst date (first flowering date or first leaf date) of five species was estimated to have advanced significantly, and dormancy depth in early spring was predicted to have increased owing to the warming-associated decrease in chilling accumulation. However, cold hardiness has decreased because of weakened acclimation and accelerated deacclimation under a warming climate. The frost risk before and after budburst remained unchanged because of the reduction in occurrence and severity of low-temperature events and earlier late spring frosts. The present methods could be generalized to estimate and predict the seasonal changes in dormancy depth and cold hardiness of temperate species in the context of climate change.

    Diversification of production to strengthen resilience is a key tenet of climate-smart agriculture (CSA), which can help to address the complex vulnerabilities of agriculture-dependent rural communities. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the promotion of different CSA practices across four climate-smart villages (CSVs) in Myanmar. To determine the impact of the CSA practices on livelihoods and health, survey data were collected from agricultural households (n = 527) over three years. Within the time period studied, the results indicate that some the CSA practices and technologies adopted were significantly associated with changes in household dietary diversity scores (HDDS), but, in the short-term, these were not associated with improvements in the households’ food insecurity scores (HFIAS). Based on the survey responses, we examined how pathways of CSA practice adoption tailored to different contexts of Myanmar’s four agroecologies could contribute to the observed changes, including possible resulting trade-offs. We highlight that understanding the impacts of CSA adoption on household food security in CSVs will require longer-term monitoring, as most CSA options are medium- to long-cycle interventions. Our further analysis of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs) amongst the households indicated a poor understanding of the household knowledge, attitudes and practices in relation to nutrition, food choices, food preparation, sanitation and hygiene. Our KAP findings indicate that current nutrition education interventions in the Myanmar CSVs are inadequate and will need further improvement for health and nutrition outcomes from the portfolio of CSA interventions.

    In Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems nutrient-rich waters are transported to the ocean surface, fuelling high photoautotrophic primary production. Subsequent heterotrophic decomposition of the produced biomass increases the oxygen-depletion at intermediate water depths, which can result in the formation of oxygen minimum zones (OMZ). OMZs can sporadically accumulate hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is toxic to most multicellular organisms and has been implicated in massive fish kills. During a cruise to the OMZ off Peru in January 2009 we found a sulfidic plume in continental shelf waters, covering an area >5500 km(2), which contained ∼2.2×10(4) tons of H2S. This was the first time that H2S was measured in the Peruvian OMZ and with ∼440 km(3) the largest plume ever reported for oceanic waters. We assessed the phylogenetic and functional diversity of the inhabiting microbial community by high-throughput sequencing of DNA and RNA, while its metabolic activity was determined with rate measurements of carbon fixation and nitrogen transformation processes. The waters were dominated by several distinct γ-, δ- and ε-proteobacterial taxa associated with either sulfur oxidation or sulfate reduction. Our results suggest that these chemolithoautotrophic bacteria utilized several oxidants (oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, nitric oxide and nitrous oxide) to detoxify the sulfidic waters well below the oxic surface. The chemolithoautotrophic activity at our sampling site led to high rates of dark carbon fixation. Assuming that these chemolithoautotrophic rates were maintained throughout the sulfidic waters, they could be representing as much as ∼30% of the photoautotrophic carbon fixation. Postulated changes such as eutrophication and global warming, which lead to an expansion and intensification of OMZs, might also increase the frequency of sulfidic waters. We suggest that the chemolithoautotrophically fixed carbon may be involved in a negative feedback loop that could fuel further sulfate reduction and potentially stabilize the sulfidic OMZ waters.

    SignificanceEstimates of nutrient allocation in different plant tissues and the relationships between the nutrient contents and photosynthetic capacity are critical to predicting ecosystem carbon sequestration under global change. Here, we provide an assessment of large-scale patterns of community-level nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in different plant tissues and then examine how nutrient allocations are coupled with plant productivity. The results show that nutrient concentrations in leaves are less responsive to abiotic environments than those in woody stems and roots (stable leaf nutrient concentration hypothesis); the relationships between vegetation primary productivity and leaf nutrient contents are stronger when less nutrients are allocated to the woody tissues (productivity–nutrient allocation hypothesis) and are stronger in deciduous than in evergreen vegetation (productivity–leaf lifespan hypothesis).

    Microalgae growth-promoting bacteria (MGPB), both actinobacteria and non-actinobacteria, have received considerable attention recently because of their potential to develop microalgae-bacteria co-culture strategies for improved efficiency and sustainability of the water-energy-environment nexus. Owing to their diverse metabolic pathways and ability to adapt to diverse conditions, microalgal-MGPB co-cultures could be promising biological systems under uncertain environmental and nutrient conditions. This review proposes the recent updates and progress on MGPB for microalgae cultivation through co-culture strategies. Firstly, potential MGPB strains for microalgae cultivation are introduced. Following, microalgal-MGPB interaction mechanisms and applications of their co-cultures for biomass production and wastewater treatment are reviewed. Moreover, state-of-the-art studies on synthetic biology and metabolic network analysis, along with the challenges and prospects of opting these approaches for microalgal-MGPB co-cultures are presented. It is anticipated that these strategies may significantly improve the sustainability of microalgal-MGPB co-cultures for wastewater treatment, biomass valorization, and bioproducts synthesis in a circular bioeconomy paradigm.

    Using a hypothetic southern pine plantation in the state of Georgia of the United States, a benefit-cost analysis of forest carbon is conducted for landowners in the voluntary carbon market. With carbon values being defined by the marginal forest growth, it is found that the inclusion of carbon into the objective function usually leads to longer rotations and higher total profits. In our baseline analysis, the rotation age increases by four years when both timber and carbon are considered. Thus, landowners can benefit from voluntary carbon trading and additional carbon can be fixed in the forests. Landowners’ decision on forest carbon is most sensitive to the discount rate and timber and carbon prices. When the discount rate is higher, future cash flows become less valuable and the optimal rotation shortens. When timber prices exceed carbon price by a large margin, timber value dominates carbon value and the optimal carbon rotation approaches the Faustmann rotation. Therefore, with a higher discount rate and higher timber prices, voluntary carbon trading will result in less carbon additionality. Finally, when the economic uncertainty is incorporated into the decision making, the results tend to be sustained albeit carbon additionality is slightly reduced.

    AbstractWheat is one of the world’s most favoured food sources, reaching millions of people on a daily basis. However, its production has climatic consequences. Fuel, inorganic fertilizers and pesticides used in wheat production emit greenhouse gases that can contribute negatively to climate change. It is unknown whether adopting alternative farming practices will increase crop yield while reducing carbon emissions. Here we quantify the carbon footprint of alternative wheat production systems suited to semiarid environments. We find that integrating improved farming practices (that is, fertilizing crops based on soil tests, reducing summerfallow frequencies and rotating cereals with grain legumes) lowers wheat carbon footprint effectively, averaging −256 kg CO2 eq ha−1 per year. For each kg of wheat grain produced, a net 0.027–0.377 kg CO2 eq is sequestered into the soil. With the suite of improved farming practices, wheat takes up more CO2 from the atmosphere than is actually emitted during its production.

    In a 10-year (1996–2005) biodiversity experiment, the mechanisms underlying the increasingly positive effect of biodiversity on plant biomass production shifted from sampling to complementarity over time. The effect of diversity on plant biomass was associated primarily with the accumulation of higher total plant nitrogen pools (N g m −2 ) and secondarily with more efficient N use at higher diversity. The accumulation of N in living plant biomass was significantly increased by the presence of legumes, C4 grasses, and their combined presence. Thus, these results provide clear evidence for the increasing effects of complementarity through time and suggest a mechanism whereby diversity increases complementarity through the increased input and retention of N, a commonly limiting nutrient.

To investigate the associations of seed traits in low‐ and high‐P environments, soybean recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a cross of cultivars Fiskeby III and Mandarin (Ottawa) were grown under contrasting P availability environments. Traits including individual seed weight, seed number, and intact mature pod weight were significantly affected by soil P levels and showed transgressive segregation among the RILs. Surprisingly, P treatments did not affect seed composition or weight, suggesting that soybean maintains sufficient P in seeds even in low‐P soil. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were detected for seed weight, intact pods, seed volume, and seed protein, with five significant QTLs identified in low‐P environments and one significant QTL found in the optimal‐P environment. Broad‐sense heritability estimates were 0.78 (individual seed weight), 0.90 (seed protein), 0.34 (seed oil), and 0.98 (seed number). The QTLs identified under low P point to genetic regions that may be useful to improve soybean performance under limiting P conditions.

    Woody plant species in temperate regions must withstand a cold winter and freezing events through cold acclimation and dormancy in autumn and winter. However, how seasonal changes in dormancy depth and cold hardiness affect the frost risk of temperate species is unclear because few studies have assessed dormancy depth and cold hardiness simultaneously. In this study, an experiment was conducted to estimate the dormancy depth and cold hardiness of five common woody temperate plant species during the winter of 2018/2019 in Beijing, China. Twigs of each species were collected at different dates during winter and the timing of budburst was monitored under the same forcing conditions. The dormancy depth was quantified as growing degree day (GDD) requirements of spring events. Simultaneously, the cold hardiness of buds at each sampling date was determined based on the electrical conductivity of the holding solution. Two indices (chilling accumulation and cold hardiness index) were used to simulate the past dynamics of dormancy depth, spring phenology, and cold hardiness from 1952 to 2021. The maximum dormancy depth of the study species was observed between early October and early December, and thereafter decreased exponentially. The cold hardiness peaked in mid-winter (end of December) through cold acclimation and thereafter decreased in spring (deacclimation). During the past 70 years, the budburst date (first flowering date or first leaf date) of five species was estimated to have advanced significantly, and dormancy depth in early spring was predicted to have increased owing to the warming-associated decrease in chilling accumulation. However, cold hardiness has decreased because of weakened acclimation and accelerated deacclimation under a warming climate. The frost risk before and after budburst remained unchanged because of the reduction in occurrence and severity of low-temperature events and earlier late spring frosts. The present methods could be generalized to estimate and predict the seasonal changes in dormancy depth and cold hardiness of temperate species in the context of climate change.

    Diversification of production to strengthen resilience is a key tenet of climate-smart agriculture (CSA), which can help to address the complex vulnerabilities of agriculture-dependent rural communities. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the promotion of different CSA practices across four climate-smart villages (CSVs) in Myanmar. To determine the impact of the CSA practices on livelihoods and health, survey data were collected from agricultural households (n = 527) over three years. Within the time period studied, the results indicate that some the CSA practices and technologies adopted were significantly associated with changes in household dietary diversity scores (HDDS), but, in the short-term, these were not associated with improvements in the households’ food insecurity scores (HFIAS). Based on the survey responses, we examined how pathways of CSA practice adoption tailored to different contexts of Myanmar’s four agroecologies could contribute to the observed changes, including possible resulting trade-offs. We highlight that understanding the impacts of CSA adoption on household food security in CSVs will require longer-term monitoring, as most CSA options are medium- to long-cycle interventions. Our further analysis of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs) amongst the households indicated a poor understanding of the household knowledge, attitudes and practices in relation to nutrition, food choices, food preparation, sanitation and hygiene. Our KAP findings indicate that current nutrition education interventions in the Myanmar CSVs are inadequate and will need further improvement for health and nutrition outcomes from the portfolio of CSA interventions.

    In Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems nutrient-rich waters are transported to the ocean surface, fuelling high photoautotrophic primary production. Subsequent heterotrophic decomposition of the produced biomass increases the oxygen-depletion at intermediate water depths, which can result in the formation of oxygen minimum zones (OMZ). OMZs can sporadically accumulate hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is toxic to most multicellular organisms and has been implicated in massive fish kills. During a cruise to the OMZ off Peru in January 2009 we found a sulfidic plume in continental shelf waters, covering an area >5500 km(2), which contained ∼2.2×10(4) tons of H2S. This was the first time that H2S was measured in the Peruvian OMZ and with ∼440 km(3) the largest plume ever reported for oceanic waters. We assessed the phylogenetic and functional diversity of the inhabiting microbial community by high-throughput sequencing of DNA and RNA, while its metabolic activity was determined with rate measurements of carbon fixation and nitrogen transformation processes. The waters were dominated by several distinct γ-, δ- and ε-proteobacterial taxa associated with either sulfur oxidation or sulfate reduction. Our results suggest that these chemolithoautotrophic bacteria utilized several oxidants (oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, nitric oxide and nitrous oxide) to detoxify the sulfidic waters well below the oxic surface. The chemolithoautotrophic activity at our sampling site led to high rates of dark carbon fixation. Assuming that these chemolithoautotrophic rates were maintained throughout the sulfidic waters, they could be representing as much as ∼30% of the photoautotrophic carbon fixation. Postulated changes such as eutrophication and global warming, which lead to an expansion and intensification of OMZs, might also increase the frequency of sulfidic waters. We suggest that the chemolithoautotrophically fixed carbon may be involved in a negative feedback loop that could fuel further sulfate reduction and potentially stabilize the sulfidic OMZ waters.

    SignificanceEstimates of nutrient allocation in different plant tissues and the relationships between the nutrient contents and photosynthetic capacity are critical to predicting ecosystem carbon sequestration under global change. Here, we provide an assessment of large-scale patterns of community-level nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in different plant tissues and then examine how nutrient allocations are coupled with plant productivity. The results show that nutrient concentrations in leaves are less responsive to abiotic environments than those in woody stems and roots (stable leaf nutrient concentration hypothesis); the relationships between vegetation primary productivity and leaf nutrient contents are stronger when less nutrients are allocated to the woody tissues (productivity–nutrient allocation hypothesis) and are stronger in deciduous than in evergreen vegetation (productivity–leaf lifespan hypothesis).

    Microalgae growth-promoting bacteria (MGPB), both actinobacteria and non-actinobacteria, have received considerable attention recently because of their potential to develop microalgae-bacteria co-culture strategies for improved efficiency and sustainability of the water-energy-environment nexus. Owing to their diverse metabolic pathways and ability to adapt to diverse conditions, microalgal-MGPB co-cultures could be promising biological systems under uncertain environmental and nutrient conditions. This review proposes the recent updates and progress on MGPB for microalgae cultivation through co-culture strategies. Firstly, potential MGPB strains for microalgae cultivation are introduced. Following, microalgal-MGPB interaction mechanisms and applications of their co-cultures for biomass production and wastewater treatment are reviewed. Moreover, state-of-the-art studies on synthetic biology and metabolic network analysis, along with the challenges and prospects of opting these approaches for microalgal-MGPB co-cultures are presented. It is anticipated that these strategies may significantly improve the sustainability of microalgal-MGPB co-cultures for wastewater treatment, biomass valorization, and bioproducts synthesis in a circular bioeconomy paradigm.

    Using a hypothetic southern pine plantation in the state of Georgia of the United States, a benefit-cost analysis of forest carbon is conducted for landowners in the voluntary carbon market. With carbon values being defined by the marginal forest growth, it is found that the inclusion of carbon into the objective function usually leads to longer rotations and higher total profits. In our baseline analysis, the rotation age increases by four years when both timber and carbon are considered. Thus, landowners can benefit from voluntary carbon trading and additional carbon can be fixed in the forests. Landowners’ decision on forest carbon is most sensitive to the discount rate and timber and carbon prices. When the discount rate is higher, future cash flows become less valuable and the optimal rotation shortens. When timber prices exceed carbon price by a large margin, timber value dominates carbon value and the optimal carbon rotation approaches the Faustmann rotation. Therefore, with a higher discount rate and higher timber prices, voluntary carbon trading will result in less carbon additionality. Finally, when the economic uncertainty is incorporated into the decision making, the results tend to be sustained albeit carbon additionality is slightly reduced.
