Machine learning studies in the field of renewable energy are analysed here (REML). So, from 2012 to 2021, we looked at the publication tendencies (PT) and bibliometric analysis (BA) of REML research that was indexed by Elsevier Scopus. Key insights into the research landscape, scientific discoveries, and technological advancement were revealed by BA, while PT highlighted REML's important players, top cited papers, and financing organisations. In total, the PT discovered 1,218 works, 397 of which were conference papers and 106 were reviews. Because it spans the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, REML research is exhaustive, varied, and consequential. The most productive researchers, countries, and sponsors include Ravinesh C. Deo, the United States' National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and China's National Natural Science Foundation. Journal prestige and open access are valued by contributors, as seen by the success of Applied Energy and Energies. Productivity among REML's key stakeholders is boosted by collaborations and research funding. Keyword co-occurrence analysis was used to categorise REML research into four broad topic areas: systems, technologies, tools/technologies, and socio-technical dynamics. According to the results, ML plays a crucial role in the prediction, operation, and optimisation of RET as well as the design and development of RE-related materials.

Currently, very little is known regarding deep-sea ecosystems both globally and in the Arctic. In this thesis I undertook a literature review on the current understanding of global deep-sea ecosystems through the use of stable isotopes. Specifically, I synthesized the available literature on spatial variation, energy pathways, depth, temporal variation, feeding behaviour, niche, trophic position and body size isotopic trends. This thesis then presents a case study examining the isotopic niche of five teleost and two decapod species within Arctic deep-sea food webs across the localized latitudinal gradient of Baffin Island. Spatial variation in isotopic niche was quantified using 13C and 15N for seven deep-sea species at three locations on Baffin Island, Nunavut to determine whether the “Latitudinal Niche Breadth Hypothesis” which states that niche breadth should increase with latitude holds true in the Arctic. Overall, isotopic patterns in global deep-sea ecosystem are variable; consistent trends are not observed across all taxa and habitats. It was concluded that niche breadth did not consistently increase with latitude in the eastern Canadian Arctic; localized conditions (e.g. sea ice, temperature) and individual condition (e.g. hepatosomatic index) may contribute more to a species’ niche than latitude. Overall, this thesis improves our understanding of deep-sea ecosystems globally, contributes baseline data for future monitoring, and by investigating multiple species and locations it will provide input on how climate change may impact Arctic food web diversity, energy dynamics and ecosystem structure to aid in sustainable fishery development.

In the present hadrontherapy scenario, there is a growing interest in exploring the capabilities of different ion species other than protons and carbons. The possibility of using different ions paves the way for new radiotherapy approaches, such as the multi-ions treatment, where radiation could vary according to target volume, shape, depth and histologic characteristics of the tumor. For these reasons, in this paper, the study and understanding of biological-relevant quantities was extended for the case of 4He ion. Approach. Geant4 Monte Carlo based algorithms for dose- and track-averaged LET (Linear Energy Transfer) calculations, were validated for 4He ions and for the case of a mixed field characterised by the presence of secondary ions from both target and projectile fragmentation. The simulated dose and track averaged LETs were compared with the corresponding dose and frequency mean values of the lineal energy, y D ¯ and y ¯ F , derived from experimental microdosimetric spectra. Two microdosimetric experimental campaigns were carried out at the Italian eye proton therapy facility of the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN-LNS, Catania, I) using two different microdosimeters: the MicroPlus probe and the nano-TEPC (Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter). Main results. A good agreement of L ¯ d Total and L ¯ t Total with y ¯ D and y ¯ T experimentally measured with both microdosimetric detectors MicroPlus and nano-TEPC in two configurations: full energy and modulated 4He ion beam, was found. Significance. The results of this study certify the use of a very effective tool for the precise calculation of LET, given by a Monte Carlo approach which has the advantage of allowing detailed simulation and tracking of nuclear interactions, even in complex clinical scenarios.

Using the aryloxyl radical 2,4,6‐tri‐tert‐butylphenoxyl (tBu3ArO⋅) as a H atom acceptor to cleave the N−H bond of a coordinated NH3 ligand up to 56 equiv of N2 per Ni center can be generated. Employing the N‐oxyl radical 2,2,6,6‐(tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yl)oxyl (TEMPO⋅) as the H‐atom acceptor, up to 15 equiv of N2 per Ni center are formed. A bridging Ni‐hydrazine product identified by isotopic nitrogen (15N) studies and supported by computational models indicates the N−N bond forming step occurs by bimetallic homocoupling of two paramagnetic [Ni]−NH2 fragments. Ni‐mediated hydrazine disproportionation to N2 and NH3 completes the catalytic cycle.

Using the aryloxyl radical 2,4,6‐tri‐tert‐butylphenoxyl (tBu3ArO⋅) as a H atom acceptor to cleave the N−H bond of a coordinated NH3 ligand up to 56 equiv of N2 per Ni center can be generated. Employing the N‐oxyl radical 2,2,6,6‐(tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yl)oxyl (TEMPO⋅) as the H‐atom acceptor, up to 15 equiv of N2 per Ni center are formed. A bridging Ni‐hydrazine product identified by isotopic nitrogen (15N) studies and supported by computational models indicates the N−N bond forming step occurs by bimetallic homocoupling of two paramagnetic [Ni]−NH2 fragments. Ni‐mediated hydrazine disproportionation to N2 and NH3 completes the catalytic cycle.

AbstractSustainable biorefineries have a critical role to play in our common future. The need to provide more goods using renewable resources, combined with advances in science and technology, has provided a receptive environment for biorefinery systems development. Biorefineries offer the promise of using fewer non‐renewable resources, reducing CO2 emissions, creating new employment, and spurring innovation using clean and efficient technologies. Lessons are being learned from the establishment of first‐generation biofuel operations. The factors that are key to answering the question of biorefinery sustainability include: the type of feedstock, the conversion technologies and their respective conversion and energy efficiencies, the types of products (including coproducts) that are manufactured, and what products are substituted by the bioproducts. The BIOPOL review of eight existing biorefineries indicates that new efficient biorefineries can revitalize existing industries and promote regional development, especially in the R&D area. Establishment can be facilitated if existing facilities are used, if there is at least one product which is immediately marketable, and if supportive policies are in place. Economic, environmental, and social dimensions need to be evaluated in an integrated sustainability assessment. Sustainability principles, criteria, and indicators are emerging for bioenergy, biofuels, and bioproducts. Practical assessment methodologies, including data systems, are critical for both sustainable design and to assure consumers, investors, and governments that they are doing the ‘right thing’ by purchasing a certain bioproduct. If designed using lifecycle thinking, biorefineries can be profitable, socially responsible, and produce goods with less environmental impact than conventional products … and potentially even be restorative!. Improving the environmental performance of the built environment is a ‘super wicked’ problem, lacking a simplistic or straightforward response. This is particularly challenging where space is rented, in part because the relationships between the various owners, users and managers of the space is regulated – at least in a formal sense - through the lease. Traditional leases largely ignore environmental considerations and present barriers to making energy efficient upgrades. Leasing practices are evolving to become greener. Evidence from a Sydney Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) study, Australian leasing experts, a UK commercial lease study and a case-study of a major UK retailer, Marks and Spencer (MandS), suggests an increasing, trend towards green leases in most of these markets and opportunities for improving environmental performance through green leasing. Further research is needed in both countries to understand the impact that greener leasing has on environmental performance of buildings.

One such technology, the leaf seal, provides comparable leakage performance to the brush seal but offers higher axial rigidity, significantly reduced radial stiffness and improved compliance with the rotor. Investigations were carried out on the Engine Seal Test Facility at the University of Oxford into the behavior of a leaf seal prototype at high running speeds. The effects of pressure, speed and cover plate geometry on leakage and torque are quantified. Early publications on leaf seals showed that air-riding at the contact interface might be achieved. Results are presented which appear to confirm that air-riding is taking place. Consideration is given to a possible mechanism for torque reduction at high rotational speeds.

This paper investigates the potential effects of the use of reference class forecasting on the World Bank's financing decisions, and quantifies the net economic impact of such decisions in the long run. A set of 57 World Bank-financed hydropower projects constructed between 1975 and 2015 was selected based on data availability. The findings show that reference class forecasting can help reduce net losses by preventing some hydropower projects with negative economic net present values from being executed. However, it also leads to the forfeiture of even larger amounts of net economic benefits by causing the rejection of some projects that are found, from ex-post analysis, to be economically worthwhile. Furthermore, because of the increased ex-ante rejection of projects, the loss of potentially economically positive projects from the portfolio of hydro dam projects is greatly increased. The errors in the estimation of economic net present values of these hydropower projects are highly positively correlated to the errors in the estimation of the benefits and only weakly negatively correlated to the errors in the estimation of costs.

This paper investigates the potential effects of the use of reference class forecasting on the World Bank's financing decisions, and quantifies the net economic impact of such decisions in the long run. A set of 57 World Bank-financed hydropower projects constructed between 1975 and 2015 was selected based on data availability. The findings show that reference class forecasting can help reduce net losses by preventing some hydropower projects with negative economic net present values from being executed. However, it also leads to the forfeiture of even larger amounts of net economic benefits by causing the rejection of some projects that are found, from ex-post analysis, to be economically worthwhile. Furthermore, because of the increased ex-ante rejection of projects, the loss of potentially economically positive projects from the portfolio of hydro dam projects is greatly increased. The errors in the estimation of economic net present values of these hydropower projects are highly positively correlated to the errors in the estimation of the benefits and only weakly negatively correlated to the errors in the estimation of costs.

Masihur;Climate change is a growing concern across the globe, and the Provincial Government of Ontario recognizes that climate change impacts need to be considered in all decision-making. In Southern Ontario, a critical and ongoing challenge is balancing the competing water demands under changing climate for various uses to ensure prosperity and sustainability in the future. A better understanding and quantification of impacts of possible climate change on regional hydrology are necessary for sustainable water resources management and maintaining healthy ecosystems in this region. In order to study the impacts of future climate on the regional water resources, a large-scale hydrologic model was developed for Southern Ontario within the Great Lakes basin using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The study area includes four basins: Eastern Georgian Bay, Eastern Lake Huron, Northern Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario and Niagara Peninsula basins, covering a total area of about 84,650 km2. The hydrologic model was calibrated and validated using monthly observed streamflow data at 40 gauging stations, and spatially validated at another 40 gauging stations across the study area. The developed model was employed to estimate water budget components for a reference period (1971-2000), and to assess climate change impacts on the hydrologic regime during the mid-century (2041-2070) and the end-century (2071-2100). Projected climate data from five GCM-RCMs simulations for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios were obtained from the NA-CORDEX archive. After bias correction, climate data sets were used in the SWAT model for the impact assessment. Based on the model calibration and validation results, the overall performance of the model was found to be satisfactory. Its performance was better in the predominantly agricultural Northern Lake Erie and Eastern Lake Huron basins than the other two basins. The average annual precipitation, evapotranspiration (ET), surface runoff and water yields for the study area over the period 1971-2000 were estimated at 979 mm, 540 mm, 183 mm and 410 mm, respectively. The average annual precipitation in the four basins varied from 923 mm to 1049 mm, and water yields were found to vary between 377 mm and 465 mm. The projected increases in mean annual temperature are 3.0oC and 2.4oC by the mid-century, while the increases are 5.2oC and 3.2oC by the end-century for RCP8.5 and RCP4.5 scenarios, respectively. The average annual precipitation of the study area is projected to increase by 8% to 16%, depending on the scenario and time period. The possible increases in precipitation are relatively high for the RCP8.5 scenario and likely to vary between 13% and 18% in the four basins by the end of the 21st century. By the mid-century, the average annual water yields in the four basins are predicted to increase by 7% to 20%, and 5% to 13% under RCP8.5 and RCP4.5 scenarios, respectively. By the end-century, the projected increases in the annual water yields of the basins are 5% to 26% for RCP8.5 scenario and 3% to 11% for RCP4.5 scenario. In general, the average monthly water yield in the study area is likely to increase during December to February, but decrease in the months of March and April. The results are also presented spatially for the subwatersheds across the study area. The study results would help in planning and management of water resources, and in developing climate change adaptation plans and strategies.

Machine learning studies in the field of renewable energy are analysed here (REML). So, from 2012 to 2021, we looked at the publication tendencies (PT) and bibliometric analysis (BA) of REML research that was indexed by Elsevier Scopus. Key insights into the research landscape, scientific discoveries, and technological advancement were revealed by BA, while PT highlighted REML's important players, top cited papers, and financing organisations. In total, the PT discovered 1,218 works, 397 of which were conference papers and 106 were reviews. Because it spans the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, REML research is exhaustive, varied, and consequential. The most productive researchers, countries, and sponsors include Ravinesh C. Deo, the United States' National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and China's National Natural Science Foundation. Journal prestige and open access are valued by contributors, as seen by the success of Applied Energy and Energies. Productivity among REML's key stakeholders is boosted by collaborations and research funding. Keyword co-occurrence analysis was used to categorise REML research into four broad topic areas: systems, technologies, tools/technologies, and socio-technical dynamics. According to the results, ML plays a crucial role in the prediction, operation, and optimisation of RET as well as the design and development of RE-related materials.

Currently, very little is known regarding deep-sea ecosystems both globally and in the Arctic. In this thesis I undertook a literature review on the current understanding of global deep-sea ecosystems through the use of stable isotopes. Specifically, I synthesized the available literature on spatial variation, energy pathways, depth, temporal variation, feeding behaviour, niche, trophic position and body size isotopic trends. This thesis then presents a case study examining the isotopic niche of five teleost and two decapod species within Arctic deep-sea food webs across the localized latitudinal gradient of Baffin Island. Spatial variation in isotopic niche was quantified using 13C and 15N for seven deep-sea species at three locations on Baffin Island, Nunavut to determine whether the “Latitudinal Niche Breadth Hypothesis” which states that niche breadth should increase with latitude holds true in the Arctic. Overall, isotopic patterns in global deep-sea ecosystem are variable; consistent trends are not observed across all taxa and habitats. It was concluded that niche breadth did not consistently increase with latitude in the eastern Canadian Arctic; localized conditions (e.g. sea ice, temperature) and individual condition (e.g. hepatosomatic index) may contribute more to a species’ niche than latitude. In the present hadrontherapy scenario, there is a growing interest in exploring the capabilities of different ion species other than protons and carbons. The possibility of using different ions paves the way for new radiotherapy approaches, such as the multi-ions treatment, where radiation could vary according to target volume, shape, depth and histologic characteristics of the tumor. For these reasons, in this paper, the study and understanding of biological-relevant quantities was extended for the case of 4He ion. Approach. Geant4 Monte Carlo based algorithms for dose- and track-averaged LET (Linear Energy Transfer) calculations, were validated for 4He ions and for the case of a mixed field characterised by the presence of secondary ions from both target and projectile fragmentation. The simulated dose and track averaged LETs were compared with the corresponding dose and frequency mean values of the lineal energy, y D ¯ and y ¯ F , derived from experimental microdosimetric spectra. Two microdosimetric experimental campaigns were carried out at the Italian eye proton therapy facility of the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN-LNS, Catania, I) using two different microdosimeters: the MicroPlus probe and the nano-TEPC (Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter). Main results. A good agreement of L ¯ d Total and L ¯ t Total with y ¯ D and y ¯ T experimentally measured with both microdosimetric detectors MicroPlus and nano-TEPC in two configurations: full energy and modulated 4He ion beam, was found. Significance. The results of this study certify the use of a very effective tool for the precise calculation of LET, given by a Monte Carlo approach which has the advantage of allowing detailed simulation and tracking of nuclear interactions, even in complex clinical scenarios.

Using the aryloxyl radical 2,4,6‐tri‐tert‐butylphenoxyl (tBu3ArO⋅) as a H atom acceptor to cleave the N−H bond of a coordinated NH3 ligand up to 56 equiv of N2 per Ni center can be generated. Employing the N‐oxyl radical 2,2,6,6‐(tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yl)oxyl (TEMPO⋅) as the H‐atom acceptor, up to 15 equiv of N2 per Ni center are formed. A bridging Ni‐hydrazine product identified by isotopic nitrogen (15N) studies and supported by computational models indicates the N−N bond forming step occurs by bimetallic homocoupling of two paramagnetic [Ni]−NH2 fragments. Ni‐mediated hydrazine disproportionation to N2 and NH3 completes the catalytic cycle.

AbstractSustainable biorefineries have a critical role to play in our common future. The need to provide more goods using renewable resources, combined with advances in science and technology, has provided a receptive environment for biorefinery systems development. Biorefineries offer the promise of using fewer non‐renewable resources, reducing CO2 emissions, creating new employment, and spurring innovation using clean and efficient technologies. Lessons are being learned from the establishment of first‐generation biofuel operations. The factors that are key to answering the question of biorefinery sustainability include: the type of feedstock, the conversion technologies and their respective conversion and energy efficiencies, the types of products (including coproducts) that are manufactured, and what products are substituted by the bioproducts. The BIOPOL review of eight existing biorefineries indicates that new efficient biorefineries can revitalize existing industries and promote regional development, especially in the R&D area. Establishment can be facilitated if existing facilities are used, if there is at least one product which is immediately marketable, and if supportive policies are in place. Economic, environmental, and social dimensions need to be evaluated in an integrated sustainability assessment. Sustainability principles, criteria, and indicators are emerging for bioenergy, biofuels, and bioproducts. Practical assessment methodologies, including data systems, are critical for both sustainable design and to assure consumers, investors, and governments that they are doing the ‘right thing’ by purchasing a certain bioproduct. If designed using lifecycle thinking, biorefineries can be profitable, socially responsible, and produce goods with less environmental impact than conventional products … and potentially even be restorative!. The need to provide more goods using renewable resources, combined with advances in science and technology, has provided a receptive environment for biorefinery systems development. Biorefineries offer the promise of using fewer non‐renewable resources, reducing CO2 emissions, creating new employment, and spurring innovation using clean and efficient technologies. Lessons are being learned from the establishment of first‐generation biofuel operations. The factors that are key to answering the question of biorefinery sustainability include: the type of feedstock, the conversion technologies and their respective conversion and energy efficiencies, the types of products (including coproducts) that are manufactured, and what products are substituted by the bioproducts. The BIOPOL review of eight existing biorefineries indicates that new efficient biorefineries can revitalize existing industries and promote regional development, especially in the R&D area. Establishment can be facilitated if existing facilities are used, if there is at least one product which is immediately marketable, and if supportive policies are in place. Economic, environmental, and social dimensions need to be evaluated in an integrated sustainability assessment. Sustainability principles, criteria, and indicators are emerging for bioenergy, biofuels, and bioproducts. Practical assessment methodologies, including data systems, are critical for both sustainable design and to assure consumers, investors, and governments that they are doing the ‘right thing’ by purchasing a certain bioproduct. If designed using lifecycle thinking, biorefineries can be profitable, socially responsible, and produce goods with less environmental impact than conventional products … and potentially even be restorative!. Improving the environmental performance of the built environment is a ‘super wicked’ problem, lacking a simplistic or straightforward response. This is particularly challenging where space is rented, in part because the relationships between the various owners, users and managers of the space is regulated – at least in a formal sense - through the lease. Traditional leases largely ignore environmental considerations and present barriers to making energy efficient upgrades. Leasing practices are evolving to become greener. Evidence from a Sydney Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) study, Australian leasing experts, a UK commercial lease study and a case-study of a major UK retailer, Marks and Spencer (MandS), suggests an increasing, trend towards green leases in most of these markets and opportunities for improving environmental performance through green leasing. Further research is needed in both countries to understand the impact that greener leasing has on environmental performance of buildings.

One such technology, the leaf seal, provides comparable leakage performance to the brush seal but offers higher axial rigidity, significantly reduced radial stiffness and improved compliance with the rotor. Investigations were carried out on the Engine Seal Test Facility at the University of Oxford into the behavior of a leaf seal prototype at high running speeds. The effects of pressure, speed and cover plate geometry on leakage and torque are quantified. Early publications on leaf seals showed that air-riding at the contact interface might be achieved. Results are presented which appear to confirm that air-riding is taking place. Consideration is given to a possible mechanism for torque reduction at high rotational speeds.

This paper investigates the potential effects of the use of reference class forecasting on the World Bank's financing decisions, and quantifies the net economic impact of such decisions in the long run. A set of 57 World Bank-financed hydropower projects constructed between 1975 and 2015 was selected based on data availability. The findings show that reference class forecasting can help reduce net losses by preventing some hydropower projects with negative economic net present values from being executed. However, it also leads to the forfeiture of even larger amounts of net economic benefits by causing the rejection of some projects that are found, from ex-post analysis, to be economically worthwhile. Furthermore, because of the increased ex-ante rejection of projects, the loss of potentially economically positive projects from the portfolio of hydro dam projects is greatly increased. The errors in the estimation of economic net present values of these hydropower projects are highly positively correlated to the errors in the estimation of the benefits and only weakly negatively correlated to the errors in the estimation of costs.

Masihur;Climate change is a growing concern across the globe, and the Provincial Government of Ontario recognizes that climate change impacts need to be considered in all decision-making. In Southern Ontario, a critical and ongoing challenge is balancing the competing water demands under changing climate for various uses to ensure prosperity and sustainability in the future. A better understanding and quantification of impacts of possible climate change on regional hydrology are necessary for sustainable water resources management and maintaining healthy ecosystems in this region. In order to study the impacts of future climate on the regional water resources, a large-scale hydrologic model was developed for Southern Ontario within the Great Lakes basin using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The study area includes four basins: Eastern Georgian Bay, Eastern Lake Huron, Northern Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario and Niagara Peninsula basins, covering a total area of about 84,650 km2. The hydrologic model was calibrated and validated using monthly observed streamflow data at 40 gauging stations, and spatially validated at another 40 gauging stations across the study area. The developed model was employed to estimate water budget components for a reference period (1971-2000), and to assess climate change impacts on the hydrologic regime during the mid-century (2041-2070) and the end-century (2071-2100). Projected climate data from five GCM-RCMs simulations for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios were obtained from the NA-CORDEX archive. After bias correction, climate data sets were used in the SWAT model for the impact assessment. Based on the model calibration and validation results, the overall performance of the model was found to be satisfactory. Its performance was better in the predominantly agricultural Northern Lake Erie and Eastern Lake Huron basins than the other two basins. The average annual precipitation, evapotranspiration (ET), surface runoff and water yields for the study area over the period 1971-2000 were estimated at 979 mm, 540 mm, 183 mm and 410 mm, respectively. The average annual precipitation in the four basins varied from 923 mm to 1049 mm, and water yields were found to vary between 377 mm and 465 mm. The projected increases in mean annual temperature are 3.0oC and 2.4oC by the mid-century, while the increases are 5.2oC and 3.2oC by the end-century for RCP8.5 and RCP4.5 scenarios, respectively. The average annual precipitation of the study area is projected to increase by 8% to 16%, depending on the scenario and time period. The possible increases in precipitation are relatively high for the RCP8.5 scenario and likely to vary between 13% and 18% in the four basins by the end of the 21st century. By the mid-century, the average annual water yields in the four basins are predicted to increase by 7% to 20%, and 5% to 13% under RCP8.5 and RCP4.5 scenarios, respectively. By the end-century, the projected increases in the annual water yields of the basins are 5% to 26% for RCP8.5 scenario and 3% to 11% for RCP4.5 scenario. In general, the average monthly water yield in the study area is likely to increase during December to February, but decrease in the months of March and April. The results are also presented spatially for the subwatersheds across the study area. The study results would help in planning and management of water resources, and in developing climate change adaptation plans and strategies.
