This study assessed the hand hygiene performance in French nursing homes using the consumption of alcohol-based hand rubs (AHRs) as a surrogate. Nursing homes from the 17 French regions were contacted to collect their AHR consumption and occupancy in 2018 and 2019. A total of 1290 nursing homes from 15 French regions participated in the survey. The estimated median number of hand hygiene actions per resident-day was 1.48 (interquartile range: 1.04-2.03) in 2018 and 1.60 (1.10-2.26) in 2019. A significantly higher AHR consumption was observed in public nursing homes with an infection control team or link nurse.

The global restoration agenda can help solve the biodiversity extinction crisis by regenerating biodiversity-rich ecosystems, maximising conservation benefits using natural regeneration. Yet, conservation is rarely the core objective of restoration, and biodiversity is often neglected in restoration projects targeted towards carbon sequestration or enhancing ecosystem services for improved local livelihoods. Here, we synthesise evidence to show that promoting biodiversity in restoration planning and delivery is integral to delivering other long-term restoration aims, such as carbon sequestration, timber production, enhanced local farm yields, reduced soil erosion, recovered hydrological services and improved human health. For each of these restoration goals, biodiversity must be a keystone objective to the entire process. Biodiversity integration requires improved evidence and action, delivered via a socio-ecological process operating at landscape scales and backed by supportive regulations and finance. Conceiving restoration and biodiversity conservation as synergistic, mutually reinforcing partners is critical for humanity's bids to tackle the global crises of climate change, land degradation and biodiversity extinction.

For this purpose, 155 countries that have data available from 1995 to 2021 were selected. The purpose of selecting these countries is to test the global responsibility of the knowledge economy to attain environmental sustainability. Design/methodology/approach Results are estimated with the help of panel quantile regression. The empirical existence of aggregate demand-based environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) was tested using non-linear tests. Moreover, principal component analysis has been incorporated to construct the knowledge economy index. Findings U-shaped aggregate demand-based EKC at global level is validated. However, environmental deterioration increases with an additional escalation after US$497.945m in aggregate demand. As a determinant, the knowledge economy is reducing CO2 emissions. The knowledge economy has played a significant role in global responsibility, shifting the EKC downward and extending the CO2 reduction phase for every selected country. Further, urbanization, energy intensity, financial development and trade openness significantly deteriorate the environmental quality. Originality/value This study contains the empirical existence of aggregate demand-based EKC. The role of the knowledge economy is examined through an index which is calculated by using four pillars of the knowledge economy (technology, innovations, education and institutions). This study is based on a combined panel of all the countries for which the data was available.

Abstractπ‐Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) have been studied as interlayers on top of a separate hole transport layer (HTL) to improve the wetting, interfacial defect passivation, and crystal growth of perovskites. However, very few CPE‐based HTLs have been reported without rational molecular design as ideal HTLs for perovskite solar cells (PeSCs). In this study, the authors synthesize a triphenylamine‐based anionic CPE (TPAFS‐TMA) as an HTL for p‐i‐n‐type PeSCs. TPAFS‐TMA has appropriate frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels similar to those of the commonly used poly(bis(4‐phenyl)‐2,4,6‐trimethylphenylamine) (PTAA) HTL. The ionic and semiconducting TPAFS‐TMA shows high compatibility, high transmittance, appropriate FMO energy levels for hole extraction and electron blocking, as well as defect passivating properties, which are confirmed using various optical and electrical analyses. Thus, the PeSC with the TPAFS‐TMA HTL exhibits the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.86%, which is better than that of the PTAA‐based device (PCE of 19.97%). In addition, it exhibits negligible device‐to‐device variations in its photovoltaic performance, contrary to the device with PTAA. Finally, a large‐area PeSC (1 cm2) and mini‐module (3 cm2), showing PCEs of 19.46% and 18.41%, respectively, are successfully fabricated. The newly synthesized TPAFS‐TMA may suggest its great potential as an HTL for large‐area PeSCs.

This paper is concerned with the risk management practices of an electricity retailer motivated by the Dutch electricity market. We examine the effectiveness of the existing base- and peak-load futures contracts as a risk management tool for the electricity retailers. We analytically characterize the retailer’s optimal hedging policy as a function of the serial correlation of the prices and the demand profiles of its customers. We find that the retailer typically over-hedges in the futures market, and the over-hedging amount increases when both base- and peak-load contracts are used. Our findings indicate that although the existing contracts in the futures market are quite efficient to replicate the exposure from profiled customers, when industrial consumers and renewable generation are included to the retailer’s portfolio, the effectiveness of such contracts decreases substantially. In our motivating example, hedging the risk of the profiled customers with base-load contracts, the firm may reduce the variance of its cash flows by 85.9%. In addition to the base-load contracts, including peak-load contracts into the hedging portfolio of the retailer increases the efficiency of hedging to 89.3%. However, when we consider the aggregate portfolio of the retailer including profiled customers, industrial consumers and renewable contracts, the efficiency of hedging through the existing futures contracts goes down as low as 32.8% during certain periods. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

Mohammed;Abstract Background Parabolic Trough Solar Collector (PTSC) is one of the most popular and an effective device that converts solar radiation into a heat or useful energy. However, it suffers from high temperature gradient and low thermal efficiency. The solution for this problem is to use new advanced coolants (hybrid nanofluids) in order to enhance PTSC's thermal efficiency. Methods A numerical analysis on the thermo-hydraulic performance of a PTSC receiver's tube equipped with conical turbulators is presented. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using Finite Volume Method (FVM) coupled with Monte Carlo Ray Tracing (MCRT) method. The flow and thermal characteristics as well as entropy generation of the PTSC's receiver tube are investigated for three hybrid nanofluids (Ag-SWCNT, Ag-MWCNT, and Ag-MgO) having a mixing ratio of (50:50) dispersed in Syltherm oil 800, Reynolds number (5000 to 100,000) and fluid inlet temperatures (400 to 650 K). Significant findings The conical turbulators effectively augmented the thermal performance by 233.4% utilising Ag-SWCNT/Syltherm oil instead of pure Syltherm oil. The performance evaluation criterion is found to be in the range of 0.9–1.82. The thermal and exergetic efficiencies increased by 11.5% and 18.2%, respectively. The maximum decrement in the entropy generation rate and entropy generation ratio are 42.7% and 33.7%.

Using an energy justice framework this work aims to understand holistic outcomes of one low-carbon energy network intervention: demand-side response enacted on domestic heat pumps. By exploring participants’ lived experience of a pilot project, from recruitment to installation and use, this work reveals how injustices were reduced, introduced and amplified. Choice, consent, cost, comfort, disruption, and control are highlighted as key aspects of interest when considering the distributive, procedural, and recognition implications of this domestic innovation. For a net reduction of energy injustices to be realised, we highlight the need for project designers to work in partnership with end users to optimise the benefits for the household and the electricity system. Whilst this is a UK study, the themes and findings are internationally applicable for interventions that aim to harness the flexibility of heating, the largest global energy end-use.

A series of experimental studies on pulsed gas characteristic parameters like pulsed gas flow rate Qpulsed (5 m3/h ≤ Qpulsed ≤ 25 m3/h), pulsed interval tpulsed (1 s ≤ tpulsed ≤ 5 s) and pulsed width τpulsed (50 ms ≤ τpulsed ≤ 250 ms) are conducted with the fluidized gas flow rate of 12 m3/h. The experiments mainly test the powder mass flow rate and solid-gas ratio in the conveying process. The results indicate that the mass flow rate and solid-gas ratio range 12.6–278.04 kg/h and 0.9–19.56 kg/m3, respectively. With the increase of the pulsed gas flow rate, the mass flow rate and solid gas ratio first increase and then decrease. When the ratio of fluidized gas flow rate to pulsed gas flow rate is within 0.8–1.2, its conveying capacity reaches the maximum. Meanwhile, the increase in the pulsed interval leads to the decrease of the mass flow rate and solid-gas ratio. Moreover, the increase in the pulsed width leads to the initial increase and then the stabilization of the mass flow rate and solid gas ratio. When the pulsed width is 50 ms, the improvement of discharge would small. Conversely, increasing the pulsed width can increase the discharge, and stabilize subsequently until over 200 ms. Besides, moisture content is one of the important factors affecting kaolin powders discharge. When the moisture content is 0.83%, the pulsed gas does not improve the discharge significantly. Meanwhile, pressure distribution at different locations in the tank is also measured. The results reveal that the introduction of pulsed gas changes the pressure distribution in the tank. A pressure zone is formed on the upper part of the tank, which promotes the powder discharge.

This study assessed the hand hygiene performance in French nursing homes using the consumption of alcohol-based hand rubs (AHRs) as a surrogate. Nursing homes from the 17 French regions were contacted to collect their AHR consumption and occupancy in 2018 and 2019. A total of 1290 nursing homes from 15 French regions participated in the survey. The estimated median number of hand hygiene actions per resident-day was 1.48 (interquartile range: 1.04-2.03) in 2018 and 1.60 (1.10-2.26) in 2019. A significantly higher AHR consumption was observed in public nursing homes with an infection control team or link nurse.

The global restoration agenda can help solve the biodiversity extinction crisis by regenerating biodiversity-rich ecosystems, maximising conservation benefits using natural regeneration. Yet, conservation is rarely the core objective of restoration, and biodiversity is often neglected in restoration projects targeted towards carbon sequestration or enhancing ecosystem services for improved local livelihoods. Here, we synthesise evidence to show that promoting biodiversity in restoration planning and delivery is integral to delivering other long-term restoration aims, such as carbon sequestration, timber production, enhanced local farm yields, reduced soil erosion, recovered hydrological services and improved human health. For each of these restoration goals, biodiversity must be a keystone objective to the entire process. Biodiversity integration requires improved evidence and action, delivered via a socio-ecological process operating at landscape scales and backed by supportive regulations and finance. Conceiving restoration and biodiversity conservation as synergistic, mutually reinforcing partners is critical for humanity's bids to tackle the global crises of climate change, land degradation and biodiversity extinction.

For this purpose, 155 countries that have data available from 1995 to 2021 were selected. The purpose of selecting these countries is to test the global responsibility of the knowledge economy to attain environmental sustainability. Design/methodology/approach Results are estimated with the help of panel quantile regression. The empirical existence of aggregate demand-based environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) was tested using non-linear tests. Moreover, principal component analysis has been incorporated to construct the knowledge economy index. Findings U-shaped aggregate demand-based EKC at global level is validated. However, environmental deterioration increases with an additional escalation after US$497.945m in aggregate demand. As a determinant, the knowledge economy is reducing CO2 emissions. The knowledge economy has played a significant role in global responsibility, shifting the EKC downward and extending the CO2 reduction phase for every selected country. Further, urbanization, energy intensity, financial development and trade openness significantly deteriorate the environmental quality. Originality/value This study contains the empirical existence of aggregate demand-based EKC. The role of the knowledge economy is examined through an index which is calculated by using four pillars of the knowledge economy (technology, innovations, education and institutions). This study is based on a combined panel of all the countries for which the data was available.

Abstractπ‐Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) have been studied as interlayers on top of a separate hole transport layer (HTL) to improve the wetting, interfacial defect passivation, and crystal growth of perovskites. However, very few CPE‐based HTLs have been reported without rational molecular design as ideal HTLs for perovskite solar cells (PeSCs). In this study, the authors synthesize a triphenylamine‐based anionic CPE (TPAFS‐TMA) as an HTL for p‐i‐n‐type PeSCs. TPAFS‐TMA has appropriate frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels similar to those of the commonly used poly(bis(4‐phenyl)‐2,4,6‐trimethylphenylamine) (PTAA) HTL. The ionic and semiconducting TPAFS‐TMA shows high compatibility, high transmittance, appropriate FMO energy levels for hole extraction and electron blocking, as well as defect passivating properties, which are confirmed using various optical and electrical analyses. Thus, the PeSC with the TPAFS‐TMA HTL exhibits the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.86%, which is better than that of the PTAA‐based device (PCE of 19.97%). In addition, it exhibits negligible device‐to‐device variations in its photovoltaic performance, contrary to the device with PTAA. Finally, a large‐area PeSC (1 cm2) and mini‐module (3 cm2), showing PCEs of 19.46% and 18.41%, respectively, are successfully fabricated. The newly synthesized TPAFS‐TMA may suggest its great potential as an HTL for large‐area PeSCs.

This paper is concerned with the risk management practices of an electricity retailer motivated by the Dutch electricity market. We examine the effectiveness of the existing base- and peak-load futures contracts as a risk management tool for the electricity retailers. We analytically characterize the retailer’s optimal hedging policy as a function of the serial correlation of the prices and the demand profiles of its customers. We find that the retailer typically over-hedges in the futures market, and the over-hedging amount increases when both base- and peak-load contracts are used. Our findings indicate that although the existing contracts in the futures market are quite efficient to replicate the exposure from profiled customers, when industrial consumers and renewable generation are included to the retailer’s portfolio, the effectiveness of such contracts decreases substantially. In our motivating example, hedging the risk of the profiled customers with base-load contracts, the firm may reduce the variance of its cash flows by 85.9%. In addition to the base-load contracts, including peak-load contracts into the hedging portfolio of the retailer increases the efficiency of hedging to 89.3%. However, when we consider the aggregate portfolio of the retailer including profiled customers, industrial consumers and renewable contracts, the efficiency of hedging through the existing futures contracts goes down as low as 32.8% during certain periods. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

Mohammed;Abstract Background Parabolic Trough Solar Collector (PTSC) is one of the most popular and an effective device that converts solar radiation into a heat or useful energy. However, it suffers from high temperature gradient and low thermal efficiency. The solution for this problem is to use new advanced coolants (hybrid nanofluids) in order to enhance PTSC's thermal efficiency. Methods A numerical analysis on the thermo-hydraulic performance of a PTSC receiver's tube equipped with conical turbulators is presented. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using Finite Volume Method (FVM) coupled with Monte Carlo Ray Tracing (MCRT) method. The flow and thermal characteristics as well as entropy generation of the PTSC's receiver tube are investigated for three hybrid nanofluids (Ag-SWCNT, Ag-MWCNT, and Ag-MgO) having a mixing ratio of (50:50) dispersed in Syltherm oil 800, Reynolds number (5000 to 100,000) and fluid inlet temperatures (400 to 650 K). Significant findings The conical turbulators effectively augmented the thermal performance by 233.4% utilising Ag-SWCNT/Syltherm oil instead of pure Syltherm oil. The performance evaluation criterion is found to be in the range of 0.9–1.82. The thermal and exergetic efficiencies increased by 11.5% and 18.2%, respectively. The maximum decrement in the entropy generation rate and entropy generation ratio are 42.7% and 33.7%.

Using an energy justice framework this work aims to understand holistic outcomes of one low-carbon energy network intervention: demand-side response enacted on domestic heat pumps. By exploring participants’ lived experience of a pilot project, from recruitment to installation and use, this work reveals how injustices were reduced, introduced and amplified. Choice, consent, cost, comfort, disruption, and control are highlighted as key aspects of interest when considering the distributive, procedural, and recognition implications of this domestic innovation. For a net reduction of energy injustices to be realised, we highlight the need for project designers to work in partnership with end users to optimise the benefits for the household and the electricity system. Whilst this is a UK study, the themes and findings are internationally applicable for interventions that aim to harness the flexibility of heating, the largest global energy end-use.

A series of experimental studies on pulsed gas characteristic parameters like pulsed gas flow rate Qpulsed (5 m3/h ≤ Qpulsed ≤ 25 m3/h), pulsed interval tpulsed (1 s ≤ tpulsed ≤ 5 s) and pulsed width τpulsed (50 ms ≤ τpulsed ≤ 250 ms) are conducted with the fluidized gas flow rate of 12 m3/h. The experiments mainly test the powder mass flow rate and solid-gas ratio in the conveying process. The results indicate that the mass flow rate and solid-gas ratio range 12.6–278.04 kg/h and 0.9–19.56 kg/m3, respectively. With the increase of the pulsed gas flow rate, the mass flow rate and solid gas ratio first increase and then decrease. When the ratio of fluidized gas flow rate to pulsed gas flow rate is within 0.8–1.2, its conveying capacity reaches the maximum. Meanwhile, the increase in the pulsed interval leads to the decrease of the mass flow rate and solid-gas ratio. Moreover, the increase in the pulsed width leads to the initial increase and then the stabilization of the mass flow rate and solid gas ratio. When the pulsed width is 50 ms, the improvement of discharge would small. Conversely, increasing the pulsed width can increase the discharge, and stabilize subsequently until over 200 ms. Besides, moisture content is one of the important factors affecting kaolin powders discharge. When the moisture content is 0.83%, the pulsed gas does not improve the discharge significantly. Meanwhile, pressure distribution at different locations in the tank is also measured. The results reveal that the introduction of pulsed gas changes the pressure distribution in the tank. A pressure zone is formed on the upper part of the tank, which promotes the powder discharge.
