Brookes, J.D. in OpenAIREThis study highlights how Chinese economic development detrimentally impacted water quality in recent decades and how this has been improved by enormous investment in environmental remediation funded by the Chinese government. To our knowledge, this study is the first to describe the variability of surface water quality in inland waters in China, the affecting drivers behind the changes, and how the government-financed conservation actions have impacted water quality. Water quality was found to be poorest in the North and the Northeast China Plain where there is greater coverage of developed land (cities + cropland), a higher gross domestic product (GDP), and higher population density. There are significant positive relationships between the concentration of the annual mean chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the percentage of developed land use (cities + cropland), GDP, and population density in the individual watersheds (p < 0.001). During the past decade, following Chinese government-financed investments in environmental restoration and reforestation, the water quality of Chinese inland waters has improved markedly, which is particularly evident from the significant and exponentially decreasing GDP-normalized COD and ammonium (NH4+-N) concentrations. It is evident that the increasing GDP in China over the past decade did not occur at the continued expense of its inland water ecosystems. This offers hope for the future, also for other industrializing countries, that with appropriate environmental investments a high GDP can be reached and maintained, while simultaneously preserving inland aquatic ecosystems, particularly through management of sewage discharge.

Electricity generation systems have traditionally been evaluated using only a limited number of economic or environmental indicators, for example capital investment, generation cost or carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, the evaluations have generally been restricted to performance within the geographic boundary of the power station. This paper reports a sustainability assessment of power generation from Australian fossil fuels, notably black coal, brown coal and natural gas. A range of key sustainability indicators incorporating environmental, economic and social performance are included. The system boundary incorporates fuel extraction, fuel transport to the power station, generation of power, and transmission of electricity to the point of use. Most commonly employed existing technologies and some promising advanced technologies for power generation are considered. The cases of exporting Australian LNG and black coal to Japan for power generation in that country have also been considered. No one fuel or technology system was superior or inferior for every indicator. However the following generalizations can be made: Natural gas combined cycle systems have advantages for the majority of environmental and economic indicators, brown coal has an advantage in terms of value added, and black coal has relatively poor safety performance.

Ahmadreza Abazari in OpenAIREAbstract In recent years, modern appliances with high electricity demand have played a significant role in residential energy consumption. Despite the positive impact of these appliances on the quality of life, they suffer from major drawbacks, such as serious environmental concerns and high electricity bills. This paper introduces a consolidated framework of load management to alleviate those drawbacks. Initially, benefiting from a demonstrative analysis of home energy consumption data, controllable and responsive appliances in smart home are identified. Then, the energy consumption pattern is reduced and shifted using flexible load models and better utilization of existing energy storage systems. This can be achieved through data mining approaches, i.e., density-based spatial clustering of application with noise (DBSCAN) method. In this technique, no sensor for detection or measurement instruments will be required, whose deployment incur cost to the system or increase security risk for consumers. In the following, one scheduling of using controllable appliances, which is formulated by convex optimization, is considered for the demand response (DR) program, provided that this plan doesn't affect customers’ priority and convenience. In the last stage, the deployment of energy storage systems, such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery energy storage systems (BESS), is introduced to lower the energy cost and improve the performance of the proposed DR model. Simulation results of this demand response are compared with conventional k-clustering methods to confirm the economic superiority of the DBSCAN clustering technique using the data of a residential unit during three different scenarios.

Wiberg, Aoife Houlihan in OpenAIREThe design and assessment of net-zero buildings commonly focus exclusively on the operational phase, ignoring the embodied environmental impacts over the building life cycle. An analysis is presented on the consequences of integrating embodied impacts into the assessment of the environmental advantageousness of net-zero concepts. Fundamental issues needing consideration in the design process - based on the evaluation of primary energy use and related greenhouse gas emissions - are examined by comparing three net-zero building design and assessment cases: (1) no embodied impacts included, net balance limited to the operation stage only; (2) embodied impacts included but evaluated separately from the operation stage; and (3) embodied impacts included with the operation stage in a life cycle approach. A review of recent developments in research, standardization activities and design practice and the presentation of a case study of a residential building in Norway highlight the critical importance of performance indicator definitions and system boundaries. A practical checklist is presented to guide the process of incorporating embodied impacts across the building life cycle phases in net-zero design. Its implications are considered on overall environmental impact assessment of buildings. Research and development challenges, as well as recommendations for designers and other stakeholders, are identified.

Benjamin McLellan in OpenAIREThe concept of resilience is a crucial part in crafting visions of desirable futures designed to withstand the widest variety of external shocks to the system. Backcasting scenarios are widely used to envision desirable futures with a discontinuous change from the present in mind. However, less effort has been devoted to developing theoretical frameworks and methods for building backcasting scenarios with a particular focus on resilience, although resilience has been explored in related sustainability fields. This paper proposes a method that helps design backcasting scenarios for resilient futures. A characteristic of the method is to delineate “collapse” futures, based upon which resilient futures are described to avoid the various collapsed states. In the process of designing backcasting scenarios, fault tree analysis (FTA) is used to support the generation of various risk factors and countermeasures to improve resilience. In order to test the effectiveness of the proposed method, we provide a case study to describe resilient energy systems for a Japanese community to 2030. Four expert workshops involving researchers from different disciplines were organized to generate diversified ideas on resilient energy systems. The results show that three scenarios of collapsed energy systems were described, in which policy options to be taken toward achieving resilient energy systems were derived.

The purpose of this study was to assess the perception towards climate change, behavior change, mitigation and adaptation measures issued by the central government among the health professionals in the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in China.In 2013, a cross-sectional questionnaire survey was undertaken among 314 CDC health professionals in various levels of CDC in Shanxi Province, China. Descriptive analyses were performed.More than two thirds of the respondents believed that climate change has happened at both global and local levels, and climate change would lead to adverse impacts to human beings. Most respondents (74.8%) indicated the emission of greenhouse gases was the cause of climate change, however there was a lack of knowledge about greenhouse gases and their sources. Media was the main source from which respondents obtained the information about climate change. A majority of respondents showed that they were willing to change behavior, but their actions were limited. In terms of mitigation and adaptation measures issued by the Chinese Government, respondents׳ perception showed inconsistency between strategies and relevant actions. Moreover, although the majority of respondents believed some strategies and measures were extremely important to address climate change, they were still concerned about economic development, energy security, and local environmental protection.There are gaps between perceptions and actions towards climate change among these health professionals. Further efforts need to be made to raise the awareness of climate change among health professionals, and to promote relevant actions to address climate change in the context of the proposed policies with local sustainable development.

Hector Malano in OpenAIREAbstract Water supply and wastewater services incur a large amount of energy and GHG emissions. It is therefore imperative to understand the link between water and energy as their availability and demand are closely interrelated. This paper presents a literature review and assessment of knowledge gaps related to water–energy–greenhouse gas (GHG) nexus studies in an urban context from an ‘energy for water’ perspective. The review comprehensively surveyed various studies undertaken in various regions of the world and focusing on individual or multiple subsystems of an urban water system. The paper also analyses the energy intensity of decentralized water systems and various water end-uses together with the major tools and models used. A major gap identified from this review is the lack of a holistic and systematic framework to capture the dynamics of multiple water–energy–GHG linkages in an integrated urban water system where centralized and decentralized water systems are combined to meet increased water demand. Other knowledge gaps identified are the absence of studies, peer reviewed papers, data and information on water–energy interactions while adopting a ‘fit for purpose water strategy’ for water supply. Finally, based on this review, we propose a water–energy nexus framework to investigate ‘fit-for-purpose’ water strategy.

The paper focuses on the interaction effect between energy consumption and trade in intermediate goods on carbon emission. The empirical results presented suggest that international trade in intermediate goods decreases the positive impact on carbon emission of energy consumption. When compared with the trade in final goods, intermediate goods trade contributes to a greater decrease in carbon pollution resulting from energy consumption. These results confirm that the link between energy consumption and carbon pollution in East Asia is significantly affected by international production fragmentation-induced trade in intermediate goods. The results presented in this paper have some important policy implications.

Haoshan Ren in OpenAIREAbstract Accurate rooftop solar energy potential characterization is critically important for promoting the wide penetration of renewable energy in high-density cities. However, it has been a long-standing challenge due to the complex building shading effects and diversified rooftop availabilities. To overcome the challenge, this study proposed a novel 3D-geographic information system (GIS) and deep learning integrated approach, in which a 3D-GIS-based solar irradiance analyzer was developed to predict dynamic rooftop solar irradiance by taking shading effects of surrounding buildings into account. A deep learning framework was developed to identify the rooftop availabilities. Experimental validations have shown their high accuracies. As a case study, a real urban region of Hong Kong was used. The results showed that the annual solar energy potential of the entire building group was reduced by 35.7% due to the shading effect and the reduced rooftop availability. The reductions of individual buildings varied from 13.4% to 74.5%. In spite of the substantial reductions of the annual solar energy, the shading effect could only slightly reduce the peak solar power. In fact, the annual solar energy reduction could be five times higher than the peak solar power reduction. Further analysis showed that simple addition of the respective solar energy potential reductions, caused by the shading effect and the rooftop availability, tends to highly overestimate the total reduction by up to 26%. For this reason, their impacts cannot be considered separately but as joint effects. The integrated approach provides a viable means to accurately characterize rooftop solar energy potential in urban regions, which can help facilitate solar energy applications in high-density cities.

Tony Page in OpenAIREAbstract The impact of wood use by isolated Forest Dependent Communities (FDC) on forest conservation is not well understood. We present a study of wood use in the YUS area (combined watersheds of Yopno, Uruwa and Som rivers) in northern Papua New Guinea, where 57 communities depend on forests for their subsistence. Using a survey methodology based on the Poverty and Environment Network (PEN) survey protocol, we assess the annual volume of wood used, primary sources for this wood and evaluate the capacity of natural forest to sustainably support current rates of wood-use as well as their per capita CO 2 emissions. The primary reason for wood extraction was for fuelwood (6.4 kg person −1 day −1 or ∼11.1 tonne household −1 year −1 ) and housing construction (0.6 m −3 household −1 year −1 ). Fuelwood was collected primarily from areas close to the village, in fallow (grassland) and agroforestry land types, while construction wood was being sourced primarily from secondary and primary forests. The volume of construction wood currently harvested across YUS was approximately 11% the annual increase in timber volumes in available and accessible natural forest. Under this wood use rate and projected population growth (2.5–4%) these communities can harvest construction wood at a sustainable rate for between 55 and 90 years. Nonetheless, we demonstrate that the CO 2 emissions from wood extraction, and in particular fuelwood, are high; approaching 1.15 tonnes CO 2 person −1 year −1 . Household surveys revealed that all smallholders had a strong interest in planting trees for production of wood for house construction, which could reduce pressures on forests and compensate for CO 2 emissions.
