Marlyne Sahakian in OpenAIREThis article demonstrates how a cultural reading of consumption that focuses on the meaning and materiality of domestic indoor microclimates can contribute to conceptual developments in the field of practice theory that refocus attention on cultural patterns, including prevailing norms and prescriptions regarding indoor temperature and thermal comfort. Drawing on evidence collected during a research-led change initiative that encouraged people to reduce energy use in the home by lowering indoor temperature to 18°C, we deploy the heuristic device of “indoor microclimate as artifact” to show how the manifestation of this new artifact initiated significant changes in everyday practices that revolve around heating. We observe that these changes may also spill over into the public sphere – from home to workplace. By making the microclimate a tangible and visible thing, we describe how people appropriate and appreciate this new object of consumption, what it says about different bodies in diverse and bounded spaces, and what the artifact as a commodity reveals about broader systems of heating and energy provision, and associated actors. Due to the increasing spread of central heating and the growing importance of complex technological devices to monitor and control indoor temperature, heating is no longer a practice in and of itself for many urban dwellers in Europe. However, when people appropriate the indoor microclimate, new heating-related practices emerge that can lead to energy sufficiency. We thus argue that by deliberately “materializing” domestic indoor microclimate as part of a change initiative, more sustainable forms of energy use can be made to matter.

The model will assess the advantages of hybrid vehicles in terms of energy consumption, network power and voltage variations, line current and losses; and will help sizing and designing a supercapacitor based energy storage system (ESS) for both on-board, and stationary applications. The proposed modeling needs to allow the ESS sizing according to the objective that needs to be achieved, being braking energy recovery, voltage drop compensation and peak power shaving the most common goals of ESS use in hybrid vehicles. The needed power and energy levels will vary in function of the vehicle features and the driving cycle followed. This all can be determined by the quasi-static simulation tool to ease the design process. Another objective of the modeling tool is to evaluate the behaviour of the vehicle power flow controller, which manages the power from/to the ESS in function of the state of several variables.

A study of the production of prompt J/ψ mesons contained in jets in proton-proton collisions at s=8TeV is presented. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.1 fb−1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. For events with at least one observed jet, the angular separation between the J/ψ meson and the jet is used to test whether the J/ψ meson is part of the jet. The analysis shows that most prompt J/ψ mesons having energy above 15 GeV and rapidity |y|<1 are contained in jets with pseudorapidity |ηjet|<1. The differential distributions of the probability to have a J/ψ meson contained in a jet as a function of jet energy for a fixed J/ψ energy fraction are compared to a theoretical model using the fragmenting jet function approach. The data agree best with fragmenting jet function calculations that use a long-distance matrix element parameter set in which prompt J/ψ mesons are predicted to be unpolarized. This technique demonstrates a new way to test predictions for prompt J/ψ production using nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. Physics Letters B, 804 ISSN:0370-2693 ISSN:0031-9163 ISSN:1873-2445

Parente, Alessandro in OpenAIREAbstract Moderate or Intense Low-oxygen Dilution (MILD) combustion has drawn increasing attention as it allows to avoid the thermo-chemical conditions prone to the formation of pollutant species while ensuring high energy efficiency and fuel flexibility. MILD combustion is characterized by a strong competition between turbulent mixing and chemical kinetics so that turbulence-chemistry interactions are naturally strengthened and unsteady phenomena such as local extinction and re-ignition may occur. The underlying physical mechanisms are not fully understood yet and the validation of combustion models featuring enhanced predictive capabilities is required. Within this context, high-fidelity data from Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) represent a great opportunity for the assessment and the validation of combustion closure formulations. In this study, the performance of the Partially Stirred Reactor (PaSR) combustion model in MILD conditions is a priori assessed on Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of turbulent combustion of MILD mixtures in a cubical domain. Modeled quantities of interest, such as heat release rate and reaction rates of major and minor species, are compared to the corresponding filtered quantities extracted from the DNS. Different submodels for the key model parameters, i.e., the chemical time scale τc and the mixing time scale τmix, are considered and their influence on the results is evaluated. The results show that the mixing time scale is the leading scale in the investigated cases. The best agreement with the DNS data regarding the prediction of heat release rate and chemical source terms is achieved by the PaSR model that employs a local dynamic approach for the estimation of the mixing time scale. An overestimation of the OH species source terms occurs in limited zones of the computational domain, characterized by low heat release rates.

The cells are volumetrically constrained at an optimal initial pressure to improve their cycle life, energy and power capabilities. Furthermore, the innovative test setup allows measuring the developed pressure as a result of repeated (de-)lithiation during battery cycling. This uniquely vast testing campaign on Si-anode full cells allows us to study and quantify independently the influence of different stress factors on their cycle life for the first time, as well as to develop a new capacity fade model based on an observed linear relationship between capacity retention and total discharge capacity throughput.

Abstract The underlying event activity in proton-proton collisions at forward pseudo-rapidity (−6.6 < η < −5.2) is studied with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a novel observable: the ratio of the forward energy density, dE/dη, for events with a charged-particle jet produced at central pseudorapidity (|η jet| < 2) to the forward energy density for inclusive events. This forward energy density ratio is measured as a function of the central jet transverse momentum, p T, at three different pp centre-of-mass energies ( $ \sqrt{s}=0.9 $ , 2.76, and 7 TeV). In addition, the $ \sqrt{s} $ evolution of the forward energy density is studied in inclusive events and in events with a central jet. The results are compared to those of Monte Carlo event generators for pp collisions and are discussed in terms of the underlying event. Whereas the dependence of the forward energy density ratio on jet p T at each $ \sqrt{s} $ separately can be well reproduced by some models, all models fail to simultaneously describe the increase of the forward energy density with $ \sqrt{s} $ in both inclusive events and in events with a central jet.

Oliveira E Silva, Guilherme in OpenAIRECountries are pushing for the use of local, renewable energy sources in order to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels for energy supply. One of the main problems with several renewable energy sources is their variability, which can be solved with energy storage. With buildings representing an important share of energy consumption, and given the growing capacity of distributed generation, distributed energy storage in buildings is expected to become increasingly present. In this context, the optimal dimensioning of home installations of photovoltaics and lithium-ion batteries, and the impact of such installations on the grid, is of the utmost importance. While there have been developments on this field, some important handicaps remain, notably the independent treatment of installation optimisation and grid impact and the substantial result differences between studies. In this paper, photovoltaics and lithium-ion storage installations are optimised through the use of real, high-resolution data from several individual households, based on realistic cost figures, and through well-defined metrics that correctly grasp the problem at hand. The impact on the grid as well as possible mitigation measures are also analysed. Results show that up to about 30% of electricity self-sufficiency can be obtained using only PV and close to grid parity. Above 40% self-sufficiency, energy storage must be used, strongly increasing the cost of such installations. Economies of scale play an important role suggesting a preferential implementation for larger users or at a community-scale. Feed-in limits seem to be a good solution to attenuate grid impact. On the other hand, a higher share of a capacity-based component on the grid tariff strongly affects the economic viability of such installations for the average household. These results are important for studies on distributed photovoltaics and energy storage as well as for energy policy. Also, the large range of results made available, calculated on a free market perspective using a simple control mechanism, provide a much-needed benchmark for further comparable studies.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2014 BelgiumPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Joachain, Hélène; Klopfert, Frédéric;A crucial argument in the debate around smart meter deployment in the EU is the potential for households to save energy. One strand of research in this field has investigated the effects on household energy consumption of the feed-back provided by smart meters. However, another aspect that deserves attention is the motivation for households to use the feed-back to save energy. This paper explores how the emerging trend of using complementary currencies for sustainability policies could translate into new interventions adapted to the smart meter deployment and capable of promoting more autonomous forms of motivation compared to interventions using official currencies. Three systems designs (rewarding, regulatory and hybrid) are presented and discussed within the framework of self-determination theory. Because the rewarding system S1 can contribute positively people's basic needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, it could lead to more autonomous forms of motivation. The conclusions regarding the regulatory system S2 are less clear, although the hybrid variant S3 that integrates mechanisms from the rewarding system into the regulatory system could be perceived as more consonant with people's basic need for autonomy.

Julien Blondeau in OpenAIREAbstract The large employment of renewable energies requires flexible, efficient and low-carbon production from fossil fuels. From all non-renewable power production routes, the electricity produced with micro Gas Turbines (mGTs) running on natural gas has a very high load flexibility and the lowest CO2 emissions. However, if we want to move towards full carbon clean power production, then CO2 in the exhaust must be captured. In this scenario, mGTs coupled with a Carbon Capture (CC) plant could be a suitable option, but only a few numerical and experimental analyses are available which assess their real potential. The low concentration of CO2 in the mGT exhaust gas is disadvantageous from a CC point of view, however the concentration can be increased by performing Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). Furthermore, the efficiency loss introduced by the CC plant can also be reduced by using the concept of micro Humid Air Turbine (mHAT). In this study, both the dry and the wet operations of the Turbec T100 coupled with a chemical-absorption plant are simulated and compared using the software Aspen Plus®. The goal of these simulations was to investigate state-of-the-art measures which could be applied to small-scale generation to assess what the energy impact of a carbon clean production would be. Simulation results show that applying EGR to a mGT or mHAT can reduce the exhaust gas mass flow rate by 50% and it can increase the concentration of CO2 by three times the traditional cycle. The humidification of the mGT can entirely compensate for the efficiency losses of the EGR application. Both cycle performances are strongly affected by the thermal input from the stripping process, decreasing the global electric efficiency by around 7.9 absolute percentage points in the mGT case and by 8.3 absolute percentage points in the mHAT case in full load conditions. The results of this paper can be used as a starting point for new cycle concepts between the mGT and CC plant.

At 580 °C, various hydrogen partial pressures between 0 and 1 MPa were used with a total pressure of 1 and 4 MPa. Oil yield increased significantly with increasing hydrogen partial pressure. However, if the difference between partial and total pressure is too large, the oil yield is affected more by the total than the hydrogen partial pressure. Similar effects are observed for the yields of BTX, PCX and naphthalenes except that for the latter the total pressure does not have a significant effect. In the conditions investigated the methane is chemically inert. Thus it is possible to recycle the gas during coal hydropyrolysis with only a slight decrease of the yields.
