    Le présent article pose comme hypothèse principale qu’il existe une spécificité insulaire en matière de changement climatique, tant dans le domaine géopolitique que dans le domaine économique. A la différence des pays continentaux, le changement climatique est un facteur de structuration des États insulaires. Créée en 1990, 2 ans après que le GIEC commence ses travaux, l’Alliance des Petits États insulaires (AOSIS) s’est beaucoup investie dans la ratification du Protocole de Kyoto. Ces derniers se considèrent en effet comme les premières et principales victimes du changement climatique dont le coût pour leurs économies sera nettement plus élevé que celui supporté par les pays continentaux. Aux coûts directs, résultant de l’aléa naturel, notamment la montée du niveau de la mer et l’érosion du littoral qui lui est associée, se surimposeront des coûts induits par les mesures prises au niveau international pour lutter contre le changement climatique. Ces mesures conduisent à remettre la distance géographique au cœur de la logique de localisation des entreprises. La limitation des déplacements aériens et maritimes au long cours qui en résultera devrait entraîner une réduction de la demande mondiale pour les produits et services touristiques insulaires, suivie d’une concurrence exacerbée entre les îles pour attirer cette demande réduite. On assistera alors à la marginalisation des économies insulaires ne pouvant se positionner sur des marchés de niche aux échelles mondiales et régionales avec pour principaux corollaires l’exode rural et la migration internationale. Les recompositions économiques et territoriales qui s’annoncent sont des processus durables qui s’inscrivent dans le temps long. En revanche, le sommet de Copenhague a montré que la structuration politique des États insulaires sur la scène internationale est un processus fragile. L’AOSIS est sortie éclatée de ce sommet. L’avenir des îles est définitivement sous contrainte du changement climatique et il s’annonce bien sombre.

    Abstract The dates production is usually accompanied by considerable loss of fruit byproducts. The chemical analysis showed that ‘Deglet Nour’ discarded flesh is rich in soluble sugars (79.8% ± 0.8%) and fibers (12.3% ± 0.4%). A processing approach was implemented to permit the production of biohydrogen from the flesh and biogas from the crude fiber fraction after soluble sugars extraction. This approach showed interesting results since the obtained biochemical hydrogen potential and the maximum methane yield were 292 mL H2/gVS initial and 235 mL CH4/gVS fibers respectively. Parallelly, the “hot water” soluble sugar fraction (date syrup) was of interest for agro-alimentary applications and showed a high sucrose, glucose and fructose content of 33.5%, 11.8% and 13.17% respectively. This study presents a proof of concept allowing an efficient sustainable energetic conversion of the date by-products biomass to biohydrogen via dark fermentation or to soluble sugars fraction and biogas via a biorefinery approach.

    Two 4 L tubular microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were installed in a municipal wastewater treatment facility and operated for more than 400 days on primary effluents. Both MFCs removed 65-70% chemical oxygen demand (COD) at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 11 h and reduced about 50% suspended solids. The COD removal rates were about 0.4 (total) or 0.2 (soluble) kg m(-3) day(-1). They could handle fluctuation, such as emptying the anode for 1-3 days or different HRTs. The preliminary analysis of energy production and consumption indicated that the two MFCs could theoretically achieve a positive energy balance and energy consumption could be reduced using larger tubing connectors. Through linkage to a denitrifying MFC, the MFC system improved the removal of total nitrogen from 27.1 to 76.2%; however, the energy production substantially decreased because of organic consumption in the denitrifying MFC. Establishing a carbon (electron) balance revealed that sulfate reduction was a major electron scavenger (37-64%) and methane production played a very minor role (1.3-3.3%) in electron distribution. These results demonstrate the technical viability of MFC technology outside the laboratory and its potential advantages in low energy consumption, low sludge production, and energy recovery from wastes.

    Abstract Chemical contamination has impaired ecosystems, reducing biodiversity and the provisioning of functions and services. This has spurred a movement to restore contaminated ecosystems and develop and implement national and international regulations that require it. Nevertheless, ecological restoration remains a young and rapidly growing discipline and its intersection with toxicology is even more nascent and underdeveloped. Consequently, we provide guidance to scientists and practitioners on when, where, and how to restore contaminated ecosystems. Although restoration has many benefits, it also can be expensive, and in many cases systems can recover without human intervention. Hence, the first question we address is: “When should we restore contaminated ecosystems?” Second, we provide suggestions on what to restore—biodiversity, functions, services, all 3, or something else—and where to restore given expected changes to habitats driven by global climate change. Finally, we provide guidance on how to restore contaminated ecosystems. To do this, we analyze critical aspects of the literature dealing with the ecology of restoring contaminated ecosystems. Additionally, we review approaches for translating the science of restoration to on-the-ground actions, which includes discussions of market incentives and the finances of restoration, stakeholder outreach and governance models for ecosystem restoration, and working with contractors to implement restoration plans. By explicitly considering the mechanisms and strategies that maximize the success of the restoration of contaminated sites, we hope that our synthesis serves to increase and improve collaborations between restoration ecologists and ecotoxicologists and set a roadmap for the restoration of contaminated ecosystems. We encourage practitioners to consider restoration as early as possible (i.e., before injury or before remediation) and to restore both structural and functional endpoints. We also promote consideration of broader landscape and seascape contexts and new ideas and approaches that can overcome the scientific and financial limitations of restoration. We urge more reciprocal transfer of knowledge among theorist and practitioners and academics, industry, government, tribal organizations, NGOs and the public to improve the science of restoration.

    This paper explores to what extent moving towards the 30% GHG emission reductions by 2020 with respect to 1990 in the EU can be considered a transformative target. To do so, we first define the concept of transformative targets from a complex systems perspective and show a novel approach and original results using an extended application of the GEM-E3 model. Traditional macroeconomic models cannot easily handle key synergetic system effects derived from green growth and sustainability policies, and thus require additional features. We analyse the role of semi-endogenous growth driven by learning-by-doing and low-carbon investment expectations following a long-term transformative trajectory.

    Abstract Geological storage of the greenhouse gas CO 2 has the potential to be a widespread and effective option to mitigate climate change. As any industrial activity, CO 2 storage may lead to adverse impact on human health and the environment in the case of unexpected leakage from the reservoir. These potential impacts should be considered in a risk assessment process. We present an approach to assess the impacts on human health in case of CO 2 leakage emerging in the unsaturated zone under a building. We first focus on the migration of the CO 2 in the unsaturated zone and the foundation through numerical simulation with sensitivity analysis. Our results show that the intrusion of CO 2 into a building is substantially attenuated by the unsaturated zone and the foundation and may lead only under very specific conditions (very low ventilated parts of buildings, high flow rate and/or building situated very close to a leaking pathway) to hazardous CO 2 indoor concentrations. We have then integrated the former results in a global toolbox that provides an efficient and easy-to-use tool for decision support, which enables to assess the impacts on human health of CO 2 leakage from the reservoir to a building.

    This paper discusses the influence of time horizon on dynamic optimization of small-size wastewater treatment plants alternating aerobic and anoxic processes. The optimization problem consists in determining the aeration policy (air-on and air-off periods) that minimizes the energy dissipated by the aeration system subject to both effluent and operating constraints. Optimization over short time horizons is first considered and reductions of the energy consumption up to 30% are obtained with respect to the usual operating mode of the process. But the application of such aeration strategies eventually results in a biomass wash-out when applied over long time periods. Here, it is shown that long time horizon optimized policies guarantee a durable functioning of the treatment plant. The resulting energy consumption savings are however lower (up to 15%), but are still important.

    La combinaison de différents systèmes de culture et de travail du sol avec différents génotypes au cours de plusieurs saisons de culture peut révéler des opportunités d'intensification durable (IS). L'objectif de cette étude était d'évaluer la performance de six génotypes de maïs en culture intercalaire avec labour de conservation (sans labour) - deux options prometteuses pour le SI. L'expérience a été menée sur trois ans (ou six saisons de culture) à la station de recherche de Kiboko, au Kenya, avec la culture de la sole et le labour des plaques de moulage comme systèmes de production de base. Les résultats ont montré que les génotypes et les systèmes de culture du maïs avaient un effet significatif sur le rendement, mais que l'effet du travail du sol n'était pas significatif. Combining different cropping and tillage systems with different genotypes across several cropping seasons can reveal opportunities for sustainable intensification (SI). The objective of this study was to assess the performance of six maize genotypes under intercropping with conservation tillage (no-till) - two promising options for SI. The experiment was carried out over three years (or six cropping seasons) at Kiboko Research Station, Kenya with sole cropping and mouldboard ploughing as baseline production systems. Results showed that maize genotypes and cropping systems had a significant effect on yield, but the effect of tillage was not significant. Moreover, there was no significant interactive effects of the tested factors on maize yield. The maize genotype CKH10085 had the highest yield of 7.7 t ha-1 under sole cropping yet it also recorded the largest yield penalty due to intercropping of 1.1 t ha-1. On the other hand, genotype CKH10717 maintained the same average yield of 7.1 t ha-1 in both conventional and conservation tillage systems. The commercial genotype genotype CKH10080 and CKH08051 were more stable than the other experimental genotypes under the variable growing and management conditions. These two genotypes are of intermediate maturity and drought tolerance, two critical attributes to improved maize production. Intercropping reduced maize yields due to increased competition, for example the overall yield of sole cropping was 7.1 t ha-1 compared with 6.4 t ha-1 under intercropping; representing an overall yield penalty of 0.7 t ha-1.     Understanding the impacts of climate on food systems is vital to identifying the most effective food system interventions to support climate-smart agriculture. The study examines how climate change is affecting food systems and what can be done to mitigate its effects. Two methodological approaches were combined in the study. The first was an Asia-wide regional consultation and forum to explore a range of initiatives that transform food systems among stakeholders working in Myanmar. The second method was an in-depth food systems study employing qualitative methods in Htee Pu Village in the Myanmar Central Dry Zone, a research site of IIRR since 2017. Key informant interviews (KII) and focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted to capture insights and data. Food systems consist of components, drivers, actors, and elements that interact with one another and other systems such as social, health, and transportation. The Myanmar food system is complex. Making it sustainable and transformative requires a mix of different approaches implemented at various scales from local to national. It also requires actions that engage various actors in the system from producers to consumers. The study of the local food system of Htee Pu Village indicates that the village has a rural and traditional food system and that climate change is one of its key food system drivers. Climate change negatively impacted farming and agricultural practices and disrupted the input supply of the local food systems. The role of intermediaries such as traders and consolidators is critical in the supply and distribution of food in the Central Dry Zone. Improved and more connected roads are essential for the supply and distribution of food for the village. The informal market outlets serve as the primary food source or sale points for households. Household diets are inadequate in quantity as the population remains highly dependent on their crops for their diets due to relatively low income. Climate adaptation must be embedded in the local level management to mitigate the effect of climate change in food production in the longer term.

    In a context where anaerobic digestion is a controversial subject, it is not surprising to see that between 20% and 30% of anaerobic digestion projects are abandoned, mainly for reasons of local opposition, problems of coordination between stakeholders and the implementation of real territorial governance capable of facing the challenges encountered during the setting up of the project. We can consequently question the role that local territorial authorities could play to encourage the development of biogas in France. We used semi-structured interviews conducted with anaerobic digestion stakeholders to identify the main functions of territorial intermediation (and their specific elements) that local authorities could have to encourage the deployment and success of these projects. Local authorities play the role of intermediation by (i) ensuring spatial and cognitive proximities between actors, (ii) mobilizing territorial resources and favoring local anchorage (iii) installing trust among the local stakeholders and (iv) having a role of instigator by participating in the supply (inputs) of biogas plants and the purchase of the energy produced (outputs).
