Loin de proposer une lecture positiviste de l’habitabilité, portée par une conception exclusivement mécanique et linéaire des dynamiques de mobilité, cette étude propose de mieux relier l’habitabilité aux pratiques quotidiennes, aux habitudes, aux solidarités, voire aux résistances qui constituent la vie ordinaire des habitants des communautés et des personnes déplacées. L’habitabilité se situerait alors au cœur de l’intrication entre socialité et spatialité, entre social et biologique, qui définit – selon Stanley Cavell – la forme de vie humaine. The consequences of climate change are particularly acute in Kenya, where 80% of the land is arid or semi-arid. What critical and constructive perspective can the concept of habitability offer in this context? Based on fieldwork carried out in Kenya in 2022 and 2023, this article aims to refine an in-situ definition of habitability, using exclusively qualitative data from two research phases, supplemented by video-mapping exercises. Far from proposing a positivist reading of habitability, driven by an exclusively mechanical and linear conception of mobility dynamics, this study proposes to better link habitability to the daily practices, habits, solidarities and even resistances that make up the ordinary lives of community dwellers and displaced persons. Habitability would then lie at the heart of the intricacy between sociality and spatiality, between the social and the biological, which defines – according to Stanley Cavell – “the human form of life.”

AbstractThe summer of 2018 was characterized by prolonged heatwaves over Northern Europe, associated with persistent atmospheric blocking, and an unusually northward jet stream location over Scandinavia. Whilst event attribution studies tend to focus on the change in probability or magnitude of the extreme temperatures themselves, we provide context to these studies by examining whether there are human induced trends in the atmospheric circulation that might affect the likelihood of similar extreme circulation patterns and associated heat waves occurring in the future. We examine trends and variability in summer jet latitude, blocking frequency and overall circulation pattern over the Scandinavian sector in a variety of reanalyses and climate model ensembles. Both the number of blocked days, and the average jet location for summer 2018 were unprecedented in the reanalyses, and rare in climate model simulations. We found no robust evidence of past or future externally forced changes in summer blocking frequency over Scandinavia in model simulations, whilst trends in circulation analogs were also largely insignificant. Trends in jet latitude were dependent on the time period examined, models included and other analysis choices. Overall, we found no robust evidence for systematic trends in average or extreme years toward Summer 2018‐like conditions for any of the three indices, nor in the frequency of co‐occurring extreme northward jet latitude and high blocking frequency. We conclude that Summer 2018s circulation can likely be explained by internal atmospheric variability.

These species, their traits, and the mechanisms underlying them comprise a valuable resource that can be mined for numerous conceptual insights and applied objectives. One of the most dramatic adaptations to water limitation is desiccation tolerance. Understanding the mechanisms underlying desiccation tolerance has important potential implications for medicine, biotechnology, agriculture, and conservation. However, progress has been hindered by a lack of standardization across sub-disciplines, complicating the integration of data and slowing the translation of basic discoveries into practical applications. Here, we synthesize current knowledge on desiccation tolerance across evolutionary, ecological, physiological, and cellular scales to provide a roadmap for advancing desiccation tolerance research. We also address critical gaps and technical roadblocks, highlighting the need for standardized experimental practices, improved taxonomic sampling, and the development of new tools for studying biology in a dry state. We hope that this perspective can serve as a roadmap to accelerating research breakthroughs and unlocking the potential of desiccation tolerance to address global challenges related to climate change, food security, and health.

Le changement climatique dans le Sud-Ouest de la France se matérialise par la transition d'un climat tempéré océanique à un climat méditerranéen. Cette transition pose des défis majeurs à la poursuite de l’agriculture irriguée, comme c’est le cas du Lot-et-Garonne. Rester soutenable économiquement dans un contexte de baisse de la disponibilité en eau constitue un enjeu de taille. Les filières agricoles sont au cœur d’injonctions paradoxales entre maintenir une forte production et être sobres en eau. Des recherches conduites dans le Lot-et-Garonne entre 2022 et 2023 auprès des parties prenantes des filières pruneau, kiwi et noisette ont mis en avant trois résultats principaux : des dynamiques productivistes de plus en plus techniques et industrialisées dans un contexte d’agriculture libérale, des stratégies d’adaptation au travers de l’irrigation (même contre le gel) et les prémices d’un sentiment de déconnexion entre les politiques publiques et les attentes locales, qui se sont exprimées par des mouvements de protestation du monde agricole.

Le changement climatique dans le Sud-Ouest de la France se matérialise par la transition d'un climat tempéré océanique à un climat méditerranéen. Cette transition pose des défis majeurs à la poursuite de l’agriculture irriguée, comme c’est le cas du Lot-et-Garonne. Rester soutenable économiquement dans un contexte de baisse de la disponibilité en eau constitue un enjeu de taille. Les filières agricoles sont au cœur d’injonctions paradoxales entre maintenir une forte production et être sobres en eau. Des recherches conduites dans le Lot-et-Garonne entre 2022 et 2023 auprès des parties prenantes des filières pruneau, kiwi et noisette ont mis en avant trois résultats principaux : des dynamiques productivistes de plus en plus techniques et industrialisées dans un contexte d’agriculture libérale, des stratégies d’adaptation au travers de l’irrigation (même contre le gel) et les prémices d’un sentiment de déconnexion entre les politiques publiques et les attentes locales, qui se sont exprimées par des mouvements de protestation du monde agricole.

Furthermore, the relationship between the initial energy dose and patient outcomes is analysed.We studied data from all pOHCA cases (age < 18 years) treated by the Paris Fire Brigade between January 2010 and December 2018, limited to those with available AED signals. The efficacy of shocks is the primary outcome. The secondary outcomes are the shock advisory system performance, pre-hospital return of a spontaneous circulation (ROSC), survival and energy dose. Energy dose, weight and age are compared using a Wilcoxon test according to the outcome's values.A total of 1,990 electrocardiogram strips extracted from 349 pOHCA cases were included in the study. Shock advisory system had a sensitivity of 89.4% and a specificity of 99.8% for the detection of shockable rhythms. Shock efficacy observed for all patients who received a shock was 83.1% and first shock efficacy for patients in initial ventricular fibrillation was 96%. Patients who received a shock had a pre-hospital ROSC rate of 74.3%, a survival rate at hospital admission of 71.4% and 34.3% at hospital discharge.This study shows that AED detect shockable rhythm with a good sensitivity and specificity and that shocks are associated with a very high rates of termination of shockable rhythms in pOHCA.

Sustained and harmonized multidisciplinary observations at key locations are needed to fill knowledge gaps and evaluate the ongoing climate change impacts on the complex Arctic marine system. For more than a decade, the Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO) has functioned as a “detection array” for ecosystem changes and trends in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean. This long-term collaborative initiative builds on active involvement of scientists conducting in situ observations within marine disciplines to systematically document how the arctic marine ecosystem is transforming with environmental change. The DBO concept is currently being expanded into other sectors of the Arctic, including Davis Strait and Baffin Bay, the Atlantic Arctic gateway area, and the East Siberian Sea. Through increased collaboration and joint practices, findings from these regional areas can leverage to pan-Arctic perspectives and improve our understanding of the entire Arctic Ocean. Common practices are now being developed, including key phenomena and relevant indicators to study. Also, we strive towards harmonized routines for sampling, analysis and data sharing to increase the comparability across both disciplines and regions, and to improve the usability of our in-situ observations also for the modelling and remote sensing scopes. An ambition is, moreover, to expand from today's predominantly open-sea coverage towards coastal regions, to the benefit of both local communities and researchers. The process of establishing a pan-Arctic DBO network is to a large part facilitated by the EU Horizon project Arctic PASSION (2022-2025). Here, we present the latest developments and shared priorities, as well as our vision of how to incorporate our efforts into other parallel processes aiming to strengthen the pan-Arctic observing system towards, during and beyond the upcoming IPY.

Cela a permis d'élargir le point de vue (calcul de nouveaux indicateurs) et de considérer le temps long (e.g. résilience d'un système face à un pic de pression adventice). Nous avons également montré qu'il est possible d'utiliser, sous conditions (temps disponible, formation et support, simplicité) un outil d'aide à la conception (DECIFLORSYS) en cours d'atelier, ce qui permet de fournir plus rapidement des résultats d'évaluation, de préciser le système innovant co-conçu et/ou de stimuler la conception d'un nouveau système innovant pour améliorer les performances de gestion durable des adventices. Reducing herbicide use requires multiple changes in agricultural practices, thought at the cropping system scale. These combined changes have numerous effects (which may limit the adoption of such innovative practices) and make it difficult to assess them by expert assessment. Hence, we used various models (FLORSYS, DEXiPM) to evaluate cropping systems co-designed by groups of farmers. The presentation of the assessment results allowed to broaden the perspective (calculation of new indicators) and to consider long term issues (e.g., resilience of a system in the face of a peak in weed pressure). We also showed that it is possible to use, under certain conditions (available time, training and support, simplicity) a design aid tool (DECIFLORSYS) during the workshop. Using it during the workshop makes it possible to provide evaluation results more quickly, to improve the description of the co-designed innovative system and/or to stimulate the design of a new system to improve sustainable weed management performances.

Here, we investigate glacier ice algae on the Greenland Ice Sheet, providing single-cell measurements of carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P) ratios and assimilation rates of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), ammonium and nitrate following nutrient amendments. The single-cell analyses reveal high C:N and C:P atomic ratios in algal biomass as well as intracellular P storage. DIC assimilation rates are not enhanced by ammonium, nitrate, or phosphate addition. Our combined results demonstrate that glacier ice algae can optimise nutrient uptake, facilitating the potential colonization of newly exposed bare ice surfaces without the need for additional nutrient inputs. This adaptive strategy is particularly important given accelerated climate warming and the expansion of melt areas on the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Fondé sur un travail de terrain réalisé au Kenya en 2022 et 2023, cet article entend affiner une définition in situ de l’habitabilité, en utilisant exclusivement des données qualitatives issues de deux phases de recherche, complétées par des exercices de vidéo-cartographie. Loin de proposer une lecture positiviste de l’habitabilité, portée par une conception exclusivement mécanique et linéaire des dynamiques de mobilité, cette étude propose de mieux relier l’habitabilité aux pratiques quotidiennes, aux habitudes, aux solidarités, voire aux résistances qui constituent la vie ordinaire des habitants des communautés et des personnes déplacées. L’habitabilité se situerait alors au cœur de l’intrication entre socialité et spatialité, entre social et biologique, qui définit – selon Stanley Cavell – la forme de vie humaine. The consequences of climate change are particularly acute in Kenya, where 80% of the land is arid or semi-arid. What critical and constructive perspective can the concept of habitability offer in this context? Based on fieldwork carried out in Kenya in 2022 and 2023, this article aims to refine an in-situ definition of habitability, using exclusively qualitative data from two research phases, supplemented by video-mapping exercises. Far from proposing a positivist reading of habitability, driven by an exclusively mechanical and linear conception of mobility dynamics, this study proposes to better link habitability to the daily practices, habits, solidarities and even resistances that make up the ordinary lives of community dwellers and displaced persons. Habitability would then lie at the heart of the intricacy between sociality and spatiality, between the social and the biological, which defines – according to Stanley Cavell – “the human form of life.”

AbstractThe summer of 2018 was characterized by prolonged heatwaves over Northern Europe, associated with persistent atmospheric blocking, and an unusually northward jet stream location over Scandinavia. Whilst event attribution studies tend to focus on the change in probability or magnitude of the extreme temperatures themselves, we provide context to these studies by examining whether there are human induced trends in the atmospheric circulation that might affect the likelihood of similar extreme circulation patterns and associated heat waves occurring in the future. We examine trends and variability in summer jet latitude, blocking frequency and overall circulation pattern over the Scandinavian sector in a variety of reanalyses and climate model ensembles. Both the number of blocked days, and the average jet location for summer 2018 were unprecedented in the reanalyses, and rare in climate model simulations. We found no robust evidence of past or future externally forced changes in summer blocking frequency over Scandinavia in model simulations, whilst trends in circulation analogs were also largely insignificant. Trends in jet latitude were dependent on the time period examined, models included and other analysis choices. Overall, we found no robust evidence for systematic trends in average or extreme years toward Summer 2018‐like conditions for any of the three indices, nor in the frequency of co‐occurring extreme northward jet latitude and high blocking frequency. We conclude that Summer 2018s circulation can likely be explained by internal atmospheric variability.

These species, their traits, and the mechanisms underlying them comprise a valuable resource that can be mined for numerous conceptual insights and applied objectives. One of the most dramatic adaptations to water limitation is desiccation tolerance. Understanding the mechanisms underlying desiccation tolerance has important potential implications for medicine, biotechnology, agriculture, and conservation. However, progress has been hindered by a lack of standardization across sub-disciplines, complicating the integration of data and slowing the translation of basic discoveries into practical applications. Here, we synthesize current knowledge on desiccation tolerance across evolutionary, ecological, physiological, and cellular scales to provide a roadmap for advancing desiccation tolerance research. We also address critical gaps and technical roadblocks, highlighting the need for standardized experimental practices, improved taxonomic sampling, and the development of new tools for studying biology in a dry state. We hope that this perspective can serve as a roadmap to accelerating research breakthroughs and unlocking the potential of desiccation tolerance to address global challenges related to climate change, food security, and health.

Le changement climatique dans le Sud-Ouest de la France se matérialise par la transition d'un climat tempéré océanique à un climat méditerranéen. Cette transition pose des défis majeurs à la poursuite de l’agriculture irriguée, comme c’est le cas du Lot-et-Garonne. Rester soutenable économiquement dans un contexte de baisse de la disponibilité en eau constitue un enjeu de taille. Les filières agricoles sont au cœur d’injonctions paradoxales entre maintenir une forte production et être sobres en eau. Des recherches conduites dans le Lot-et-Garonne entre 2022 et 2023 auprès des parties prenantes des filières pruneau, kiwi et noisette ont mis en avant trois résultats principaux : des dynamiques productivistes de plus en plus techniques et industrialisées dans un contexte d’agriculture libérale, des stratégies d’adaptation au travers de l’irrigation (même contre le gel) et les prémices d’un sentiment de déconnexion entre les politiques publiques et les attentes locales, qui se sont exprimées par des mouvements de protestation du monde agricole.

Furthermore, the relationship between the initial energy dose and patient outcomes is analysed.We studied data from all pOHCA cases (age < 18 years) treated by the Paris Fire Brigade between January 2010 and December 2018, limited to those with available AED signals. The efficacy of shocks is the primary outcome. The secondary outcomes are the shock advisory system performance, pre-hospital return of a spontaneous circulation (ROSC), survival and energy dose. Energy dose, weight and age are compared using a Wilcoxon test according to the outcome's values.A total of 1,990 electrocardiogram strips extracted from 349 pOHCA cases were included in the study. Shock advisory system had a sensitivity of 89.4% and a specificity of 99.8% for the detection of shockable rhythms. Shock efficacy observed for all patients who received a shock was 83.1% and first shock efficacy for patients in initial ventricular fibrillation was 96%. Patients who received a shock had a pre-hospital ROSC rate of 74.3%, a survival rate at hospital admission of 71.4% and 34.3% at hospital discharge.This study shows that AED detect shockable rhythm with a good sensitivity and specificity and that shocks are associated with a very high rates of termination of shockable rhythms in pOHCA.

Sustained and harmonized multidisciplinary observations at key locations are needed to fill knowledge gaps and evaluate the ongoing climate change impacts on the complex Arctic marine system. For more than a decade, the Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO) has functioned as a “detection array” for ecosystem changes and trends in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean. This long-term collaborative initiative builds on active involvement of scientists conducting in situ observations within marine disciplines to systematically document how the arctic marine ecosystem is transforming with environmental change. The DBO concept is currently being expanded into other sectors of the Arctic, including Davis Strait and Baffin Bay, the Atlantic Arctic gateway area, and the East Siberian Sea. Through increased collaboration and joint practices, findings from these regional areas can leverage to pan-Arctic perspectives and improve our understanding of the entire Arctic Ocean. Common practices are now being developed, including key phenomena and relevant indicators to study. Also, we strive towards harmonized routines for sampling, analysis and data sharing to increase the comparability across both disciplines and regions, and to improve the usability of our in-situ observations also for the modelling and remote sensing scopes. An ambition is, moreover, to expand from today's predominantly open-sea coverage towards coastal regions, to the benefit of both local communities and researchers. The process of establishing a pan-Arctic DBO network is to a large part facilitated by the EU Horizon project Arctic PASSION (2022-2025). Here, we present the latest developments and shared priorities, as well as our vision of how to incorporate our efforts into other parallel processes aiming to strengthen the pan-Arctic observing system towards, during and beyond the upcoming IPY.

Sustained and harmonized multidisciplinary observations at key locations are needed to fill knowledge gaps and evaluate the ongoing climate change impacts on the complex Arctic marine system. For more than a decade, the Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO) has functioned as a “detection array” for ecosystem changes and trends in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean. This long-term collaborative initiative builds on active involvement of scientists conducting in situ observations within marine disciplines to systematically document how the arctic marine ecosystem is transforming with environmental change. The DBO concept is currently being expanded into other sectors of the Arctic, including Davis Strait and Baffin Bay, the Atlantic Arctic gateway area, and the East Siberian Sea. Reducing herbicide use requires multiple changes in agricultural practices, thought at the cropping system scale. These combined changes have numerous effects (which may limit the adoption of such innovative practices) and make it difficult to assess them by expert assessment. Hence, we used various models (FLORSYS, DEXiPM) to evaluate cropping systems co-designed by groups of farmers. The presentation of the assessment results allowed to broaden the perspective (calculation of new indicators) and to consider long term issues (e.g., resilience of a system in the face of a peak in weed pressure). We also showed that it is possible to use, under certain conditions (available time, training and support, simplicity) a design aid tool (DECIFLORSYS) during the workshop. Using it during the workshop makes it possible to provide evaluation results more quickly, to improve the description of the co-designed innovative system and/or to stimulate the design of a new system to improve sustainable weed management performances.

Despite its potential, comprehensive evaluations of its use in hydrology and geotechnical engineering are limited. This study addresses this gap through a bibliometric analysis of 685 articles (2013–2023) from the Scopus database, employing VOSviewer and RStudio to explore global research trends, key contributors, and emerging themes. The analysis reveals that China, the United States, and Japan are leading contributors to this field, with significant advancements in microbial-induced (MICP) and enzyme-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (EICP) techniques. These methods have demonstrated effectiveness in improving soil strength, reducing erosion, and enhancing hydrological properties such as infiltration, runoff control, and water retention. Co-occurrence analysis identifies interdisciplinary connections between geotechnics and hydrology, highlighting research clusters focused on biomineralization, erosion resistance, and durability. The findings underscore biocementation’s pivotal role in addressing sustainability challenges by providing environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional soil stabilization techniques. This study not only maps the current research landscape but also offers valuable insights into the practical implications of biocementation for slope stability and hydrological management, laying the foundation for future advancements in sustainable engineering practices.

Here, we investigate glacier ice algae on the Greenland Ice Sheet, providing single-cell measurements of carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P) ratios and assimilation rates of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), ammonium and nitrate following nutrient amendments. The single-cell analyses reveal high C:N and C:P atomic ratios in algal biomass as well as intracellular P storage. DIC assimilation rates are not enhanced by ammonium, nitrate, or phosphate addition. Our combined results demonstrate that glacier ice algae can optimise nutrient uptake, facilitating the potential colonization of newly exposed bare ice surfaces without the need for additional nutrient inputs. This adaptive strategy is particularly important given accelerated climate warming and the expansion of melt areas on the Greenland Ice Sheet.
