Complex networks can describe the contacts between infectious individuals, responsible for disease spreading in real-world systems. Understanding how the network structure affects an epidemic outbreak is therefore of great importance to evaluate the vulnerability of a network and optimize disease control. Here we argue that the best network structure indexes (NSIs) to predict the disease spreading extent in real-world networks are based on the notion of network node distance rather than on network connectivity as commonly believed. We numerically simulated, via a type-SIR model, epidemic outbreaks spreading on 50 real-world networks. We then tested which NSIs, among 40, could a priori better predict the disease fate. We found that the “average normalized node closeness” and the “average node distance” are the best predictors of the initial spreading pace, whereas indexes of “topological complexity” of the network, are the best predictors of both the value of the epidemic peak and the final extent of the spreading. Furthermore, most of the commonly used NSIs are not reliable predictors of the disease spreading extent in real-world networks.

New energy generation and storage systems are continuously being developed due to climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental laws. Some systems are incremental innovations of existing systems while others are radical innovations. Radical innovation systems are risky investments due to their relevant technical and economic uncertainties. Prototyping can hedge these risks by spending a fraction of the cost of a full-scale system and in return receiving economic and technical information regarding the system. In economic terms, prototyping is an option to hedge risk coming at a cost that needs to be properly assessed. Real options analysis is the project appraisal approach for these assessments. This paper aims to introduce and test an algorithm based on real options analysis to quantitatively assess the “option to prototype” in the energy sector. First, the interrelated research areas of prototyping, energy systems, and real options analysis are reviewed. Then, a novel algorithm is presented and applied to an innovative Generation Integrated Energy Storage system: Wind-driven Thermal Pumping to demonstrate the effectiveness of option to prototype and the main parameters influencing this decision. Results show that the cost of the prototype and the market size (number of identical systems to build) are key parameters.

Within the Best Estimate Plus Uncertainty framework for the safety analysis of Nuclear Power Plants, the quantification of the uncertainties affecting the Thermal-Hydraulics (T-H) codes used is crucial. For this, Inverse Uncertainty Quantification (IUQ) methodologies are being developed for determining the probability density functions of relevant T-H codes input parameters, based on experimental data from Separate Effect Tests (SETs) experimental facilities. In practice, IUQ is challenged by the large range of variability of the experimental data in terms of Initial and Boundary Conditions (ICs & BCs), because the experimental campaigns are designed to cover the widest possible domain of conditions with the smallest number of experiments, so that same or similar ICs and BCs are seldomly repeated. To address this issue, we propose to use global sensitivity analysis, to tailor the IUQ on specific sub-regions described by segmented ICs & BCs domains. The methodology proposed is exemplified on two SETs, namely Sozzi-Sutherland and Super Moby Dick, whose experimental databases have been made available in the ATRIUM (Application Tests for Realization of Inverse Uncertainty quantification and validation Methodologies in thermal hydraulics) project promoted by the OECD/NEA/CSNI. The results obtained are superior to those of traditional IUQ methodologies for models highly sensitive to ICs & BCs.

This review describes hybrid photonic-plasmonic structures based on periodic structures that have metallic coatings or inserts which make use of the Tamm plasmon for sensing applications. The term Tamm plasmon refers a particular resonance resulting from the enhancement of a surface plasmon resonance absorption via coupling to a wavelength-matching photonic bandgap provided by a photonic crystal. Tamm plasmon-based devices come in an ample variety of material and geometric combinations, each designed to perform a specific kind of measurement. While the physical effect is quite well documented and understood, its implementation in devices is still a rapidly developing and thriving field, which leaves open many possibilities for novel designs and new applications. We therefore aim of giving a complete overview on the topic, so as to provide an ordered collection of designs and uses, as well as to spur further development on the subject of the Tamm plasmon for sensing applications.

This review describes hybrid photonic-plasmonic structures based on periodic structures that have metallic coatings or inserts which make use of the Tamm plasmon for sensing applications. The term Tamm plasmon refers a particular resonance resulting from the enhancement of a surface plasmon resonance absorption via coupling to a wavelength-matching photonic bandgap provided by a photonic crystal. Tamm plasmon-based devices come in an ample variety of material and geometric combinations, each designed to perform a specific kind of measurement. While the physical effect is quite well documented and understood, its implementation in devices is still a rapidly developing and thriving field, which leaves open many possibilities for novel designs and new applications. We therefore aim of giving a complete overview on the topic, so as to provide an ordered collection of designs and uses, as well as to spur further development on the subject of the Tamm plasmon for sensing applications.

This paper presents a novel clustering model predictive control technique where transitions to the best cooperation topology are planned over the prediction horizon. A new variable, the so-called transition horizon, is added to the optimization problem to calculate the optimal instant to introduce the next topology. Accordingly, agents can predict topology transitions to adapt their trajectories while optimizing their goals. Moreover, conditions to guarantee recursive feasibility and robust stability of the system are provided. Finally, the proposed control method is tested via a simulated eight-coupled tanks plant. The Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) have a key role to play in understanding which factors and policies would motivate, encourage and enable different actors to adopt a wide range of sustainable energy behaviours and support the required system changes and policies. The SSH can provide critical insights into how consumers could be empowered to consistently engage in sustainable energy behaviour, support and adopt new technologies, and support policies and changes in energy systems. Furthermore, they can increase our understanding of how organisations such as private and public institutions, and groups and associations of people can play a key role in the sustainable energy transition. We identify key questions to be addressed that have been identified by the Platform for Energy Research in the Socio-economic Nexus (PERSON, see person.eu), including SSH scholars who have been studying energy issues for many years. We identify three main research themes. The first research theme involves understanding which factors encourage different actors to engage in sustainable energy behaviour. The second research theme focuses on understanding which interventions can be effective in encouraging sustainable energy behaviour of different actors, and which factors enhance their effects. The third research theme concerns understanding which factors affect public and policy support for energy policy and changes in energy systems, and how important public concerns can best be addressed as to reduce or prevent resistance.

The present study aims to develop an innovative scientific methodology for adjusting the phys-icochemical composition of any clay soil to make it appropriate for construction applications. The realized research was carried out on unexploited clayey soil extracted from Bensmim village (Morocco). Another clay sample from "Extrabrick" brick manufactory was also used as a reference since it is used to produce high-quality bricks. Raw materials physicochemical and geotechnical properties were determined. Results demonstrated that the studied clay is an unsuitable raw material for clay bricks production. This is due to its low plasticity resulting from its significant sand content, low clay fraction, and absence of swelling clay. Therefore, improving the plasticity of our clay was taken as a critical factor to enhance the properties of this clay. Different per-centages of bentonite, which is known for its high plasticity, ranging from 0 to 10%, were added to study the effect of this addition on the characteristics of the studied clay. The rheological and mechanical analysis showed that increasing the percentage of bentonite has a beneficial effect on the properties of the studied clay bricks. In fact, the addition of 10% bentonite showed an increase in the yield stress, viscosity, and the mixture exhibited a rheological behavior very close to the reference sample. The founded results were fitted to Herschel-Bulkley classical. The findings suggest that the addition of bentonite decreases the flow index value and increases the consis-tency index of the studied clay. Furthermore, compressive strength went from 5.3 MPa for the studied clay without additive to 19.33 MPa after 10% of bentonite addition. This value of compressive strength is very close to the compressive strength of the reference brick 23.83 MPa. These results confirmed that rheology could be a powerful tool to tune the formulation of con-struction materials.

The present study aims to develop an innovative scientific methodology for adjusting the phys-icochemical composition of any clay soil to make it appropriate for construction applications. The realized research was carried out on unexploited clayey soil extracted from Bensmim village (Morocco). Another clay sample from "Extrabrick" brick manufactory was also used as a reference since it is used to produce high-quality bricks. Raw materials physicochemical and geotechnical properties were determined. Results demonstrated that the studied clay is an unsuitable raw material for clay bricks production. This is due to its low plasticity resulting from its significant sand content, low clay fraction, and absence of swelling clay. Therefore, improving the plasticity of our clay was taken as a critical factor to enhance the properties of this clay. Different per-centages of bentonite, which is known for its high plasticity, ranging from 0 to 10%, were added to study the effect of this addition on the characteristics of the studied clay. The rheological and mechanical analysis showed that increasing the percentage of bentonite has a beneficial effect on the properties of the studied clay bricks. In fact, the addition of 10% bentonite showed an increase in the yield stress, viscosity, and the mixture exhibited a rheological behavior very close to the reference sample. The founded results were fitted to Herschel-Bulkley classical. The findings suggest that the addition of bentonite decreases the flow index value and increases the consis-tency index of the studied clay. Furthermore, compressive strength went from 5.3 MPa for the studied clay without additive to 19.33 MPa after 10% of bentonite addition. This value of compressive strength is very close to the compressive strength of the reference brick 23.83 MPa. These results confirmed that rheology could be a powerful tool to tune the formulation of con-struction materials.

The reliability analysis of IESs (Integrated Energy Systems) is a complicated task because of the complex characteristics of different subsystems and the multi-scale dynamics that develop therein. To effectively address such problems, this paper proposes a systematic framework to analyse the reliability of energy supply in IESs, considering the dynamics of IESs and the inter-relationships among uncertainties. First, based on the linepack-based performance analysis model of IES, a quasi-steady-state model is established to model the dynamic behaviours in IESs, properly accounting for practical engineering and operational strategies. Then, considering the inter-correlations among different uncertainty sources and time-dependent relationships of each variable, a model that combines the statistical structure of copula with the machine learning method of stacked autoencoder (CSML) is adopted to establish the timely multivariate joint distributions for variables. Monte Carlo simulation combined with Order Statistics is used for assessing supply reliability. Case studies are performed on a realistic IES that combines an IEEE-15 power system with an 18-node natural gas pipeline network. The efficiency and accuracy of the quasi-steady-state model are validated. The reliability evaluation results show that the inter-correlations among variables and time-dependent relationships of each variable have great effects on the system reliability assessment. The consideration of linepack can significantly improve the supply reliability of IES whereas the management strategy of linepack may lead to some risky points. © 2022

Floating turbines are installed at progressively increasing water depths, interacting with offshore and deep-sea ecosystems. Thus, specific criteria to enable a sound and accurate Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) are required. The still limited understanding of the impacts of FOWFs, and the concerns for the conflicts in the use of maritime space (e.g., fisheries), might lead to a more precautionary approach and constrain their development. Here we describe the characteristics of the deep habitats potentially impacted and identify a set of comprehensive and standardized criteria, response variables and approaches for a reliable EIA based on an Ecosystem-based approach. These analyses will support an appropriate design and site prioritization to respect the “Do No Significant Harm" principle. Considering the wide heterogeneity among habitats and geographic regions, we examined the potential interactions of FOWFs with i) Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems; ii) critical habitats; iii) migratory routes of large marine vertebrates; iv) habitat-forming species, benthic/pelagic organisms, v) migratory routes of birds/chiropters; vi) other human uses leading to cumulative/synergistic effects and any other potential interference. We identified mitigation and compensation measures and explored the potential of wind-farm areas as “Other Effective Conservation Measures” to support sustainable fisheries and passive restoration. Adequate siting, EIA and systematic monitoring can minimize FOWFs’ environmental interactions, with final negligible, or even positive effects on marine ecosystems. Standardized criteria could significantly reduce the bottlenecks in permitting while offering a strategic vision for the sustainable use of the maritime space.

In recent years, transport policy has strongly been oriented to develop more inclusive cities and to design mobility services aligned to specific users’ needs. In an attempt to guarantee an adequate level of accessibility, especially to vulnerable users, approaches based on the dialogue between public administration, operators, citizens and researchers (so-called “quadruple helix”) have been proposed. The two case studies presented in this article refer to the development of a minibus demand-responsive transport system, devoted mainly to people with reduced mobility, in the cities of Ljubljana and Maribor (Slovenia) designed using a Living Lab participative approach. In fact, urban mobility stakeholders were engaged in this process during the design and monitoring phases of the pilot projects. Their involvement resulted in producing positive outcomes: citizens actively participated in the projects, and the designed service was perceived to be useful and effective. Both projects were successful, as statistics demonstrate, and are expected to be confirmed and strengthened over the next few years.

Complex networks can describe the contacts between infectious individuals, responsible for disease spreading in real-world systems. Understanding how the network structure affects an epidemic outbreak is therefore of great importance to evaluate the vulnerability of a network and optimize disease control. Here we argue that the best network structure indexes (NSIs) to predict the disease spreading extent in real-world networks are based on the notion of network node distance rather than on network connectivity as commonly believed. We numerically simulated, via a type-SIR model, epidemic outbreaks spreading on 50 real-world networks. We then tested which NSIs, among 40, could a priori better predict the disease fate. We found that the “average normalized node closeness” and the “average node distance” are the best predictors of the initial spreading pace, whereas indexes of “topological complexity” of the network, are the best predictors of both the value of the epidemic peak and the final extent of the spreading. Furthermore, most of the commonly used NSIs are not reliable predictors of the disease spreading extent in real-world networks.

New energy generation and storage systems are continuously being developed due to climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental laws. Some systems are incremental innovations of existing systems while others are radical innovations. Radical innovation systems are risky investments due to their relevant technical and economic uncertainties. Prototyping can hedge these risks by spending a fraction of the cost of a full-scale system and in return receiving economic and technical information regarding the system. In economic terms, prototyping is an option to hedge risk coming at a cost that needs to be properly assessed. Real options analysis is the project appraisal approach for these assessments. This paper aims to introduce and test an algorithm based on real options analysis to quantitatively assess the “option to prototype” in the energy sector. First, the interrelated research areas of prototyping, energy systems, and real options analysis are reviewed. Then, a novel algorithm is presented and applied to an innovative Generation Integrated Energy Storage system: Wind-driven Thermal Pumping to demonstrate the effectiveness of option to prototype and the main parameters influencing this decision. Results show that the cost of the prototype and the market size (number of identical systems to build) are key parameters.

Within the Best Estimate Plus Uncertainty framework for the safety analysis of Nuclear Power Plants, the quantification of the uncertainties affecting the Thermal-Hydraulics (T-H) codes used is crucial. For this, Inverse Uncertainty Quantification (IUQ) methodologies are being developed for determining the probability density functions of relevant T-H codes input parameters, based on experimental data from Separate Effect Tests (SETs) experimental facilities. In practice, IUQ is challenged by the large range of variability of the experimental data in terms of Initial and Boundary Conditions (ICs & BCs), because the experimental campaigns are designed to cover the widest possible domain of conditions with the smallest number of experiments, so that same or similar ICs and BCs are seldomly repeated. To address this issue, we propose to use global sensitivity analysis, to tailor the IUQ on specific sub-regions described by segmented ICs & BCs domains. The methodology proposed is exemplified on two SETs, namely Sozzi-Sutherland and Super Moby Dick, whose experimental databases have been made available in the ATRIUM (Application Tests for Realization of Inverse Uncertainty quantification and validation Methodologies in thermal hydraulics) project promoted by the OECD/NEA/CSNI. The results obtained are superior to those of traditional IUQ methodologies for models highly sensitive to ICs & BCs.

This review describes hybrid photonic-plasmonic structures based on periodic structures that have metallic coatings or inserts which make use of the Tamm plasmon for sensing applications. The term Tamm plasmon refers a particular resonance resulting from the enhancement of a surface plasmon resonance absorption via coupling to a wavelength-matching photonic bandgap provided by a photonic crystal. Tamm plasmon-based devices come in an ample variety of material and geometric combinations, each designed to perform a specific kind of measurement. While the physical effect is quite well documented and understood, its implementation in devices is still a rapidly developing and thriving field, which leaves open many possibilities for novel designs and new applications. We therefore aim of giving a complete overview on the topic, so as to provide an ordered collection of designs and uses, as well as to spur further development on the subject of the Tamm plasmon for sensing applications.

This review describes hybrid photonic-plasmonic structures based on periodic structures that have metallic coatings or inserts which make use of the Tamm plasmon for sensing applications. The term Tamm plasmon refers a particular resonance resulting from the enhancement of a surface plasmon resonance absorption via coupling to a wavelength-matching photonic bandgap provided by a photonic crystal. Tamm plasmon-based devices come in an ample variety of material and geometric combinations, each designed to perform a specific kind of measurement. While the physical effect is quite well documented and understood, its implementation in devices is still a rapidly developing and thriving field, which leaves open many possibilities for novel designs and new applications. We therefore aim of giving a complete overview on the topic, so as to provide an ordered collection of designs and uses, as well as to spur further development on the subject of the Tamm plasmon for sensing applications.

This paper presents a novel clustering model predictive control technique where transitions to the best cooperation topology are planned over the prediction horizon. A new variable, the so-called transition horizon, is added to the optimization problem to calculate the optimal instant to introduce the next topology. Accordingly, agents can predict topology transitions to adapt their trajectories while optimizing their goals. Moreover, conditions to guarantee recursive feasibility and robust stability of the system are provided. Finally, the proposed control method is tested via a simulated eight-coupled tanks plant. The Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) have a key role to play in understanding which factors and policies would motivate, encourage and enable different actors to adopt a wide range of sustainable energy behaviours and support the required system changes and policies. The SSH can provide critical insights into how consumers could be empowered to consistently engage in sustainable energy behaviour, support and adopt new technologies, and support policies and changes in energy systems. Furthermore, they can increase our understanding of how organisations such as private and public institutions, and groups and associations of people can play a key role in the sustainable energy transition. We identify key questions to be addressed that have been identified by the Platform for Energy Research in the Socio-economic Nexus (PERSON, see person.eu), including SSH scholars who have been studying energy issues for many years. We identify three main research themes. The first research theme involves understanding which factors encourage different actors to engage in sustainable energy behaviour. The second research theme focuses on understanding which interventions can be effective in encouraging sustainable energy behaviour of different actors, and which factors enhance their effects. The third research theme concerns understanding which factors affect public and policy support for energy policy and changes in energy systems, and how important public concerns can best be addressed as to reduce or prevent resistance.

The present study aims to develop an innovative scientific methodology for adjusting the phys-icochemical composition of any clay soil to make it appropriate for construction applications. The realized research was carried out on unexploited clayey soil extracted from Bensmim village (Morocco). Another clay sample from "Extrabrick" brick manufactory was also used as a reference since it is used to produce high-quality bricks. Raw materials physicochemical and geotechnical properties were determined. Results demonstrated that the studied clay is an unsuitable raw material for clay bricks production. This is due to its low plasticity resulting from its significant sand content, low clay fraction, and absence of swelling clay. Therefore, improving the plasticity of our clay was taken as a critical factor to enhance the properties of this clay. Different per-centages of bentonite, which is known for its high plasticity, ranging from 0 to 10%, were added to study the effect of this addition on the characteristics of the studied clay. The rheological and mechanical analysis showed that increasing the percentage of bentonite has a beneficial effect on the properties of the studied clay bricks. In fact, the addition of 10% bentonite showed an increase in the yield stress, viscosity, and the mixture exhibited a rheological behavior very close to the reference sample. The founded results were fitted to Herschel-Bulkley classical. The findings suggest that the addition of bentonite decreases the flow index value and increases the consis-tency index of the studied clay. Furthermore, compressive strength went from 5.3 MPa for the studied clay without additive to 19.33 MPa after 10% of bentonite addition. This value of compressive strength is very close to the compressive strength of the reference brick 23.83 MPa. These results confirmed that rheology could be a powerful tool to tune the formulation of con-struction materials.

This is due to its low plasticity resulting from its significant sand content, low clay fraction, and absence of swelling clay. Therefore, improving the plasticity of our clay was taken as a critical factor to enhance the properties of this clay. Different per-centages of bentonite, which is known for its high plasticity, ranging from 0 to 10%, were added to study the effect of this addition on the characteristics of the studied clay. The rheological and mechanical analysis showed that increasing the percentage of bentonite has a beneficial effect on the properties of the studied clay bricks. In fact, the addition of 10% bentonite showed an increase in the yield stress, viscosity, and the mixture exhibited a rheological behavior very close to the reference sample. The founded results were fitted to Herschel-Bulkley classical. The findings suggest that the addition of bentonite decreases the flow index value and increases the consis-tency index of the studied clay. Furthermore, compressive strength went from 5.3 MPa for the studied clay without additive to 19.33 MPa after 10% of bentonite addition. This value of compressive strength is very close to the compressive strength of the reference brick 23.83 MPa. These results confirmed that rheology could be a powerful tool to tune the formulation of con-struction materials.

The reliability analysis of IESs (Integrated Energy Systems) is a complicated task because of the complex characteristics of different subsystems and the multi-scale dynamics that develop therein. To effectively address such problems, this paper proposes a systematic framework to analyse the reliability of energy supply in IESs, considering the dynamics of IESs and the inter-relationships among uncertainties. First, based on the linepack-based performance analysis model of IES, a quasi-steady-state model is established to model the dynamic behaviours in IESs, properly accounting for practical engineering and operational strategies. Then, considering the inter-correlations among different uncertainty sources and time-dependent relationships of each variable, a model that combines the statistical structure of copula with the machine learning method of stacked autoencoder (CSML) is adopted to establish the timely multivariate joint distributions for variables. Monte Carlo simulation combined with Order Statistics is used for assessing supply reliability. Case studies are performed on a realistic IES that combines an IEEE-15 power system with an 18-node natural gas pipeline network. The efficiency and accuracy of the quasi-steady-state model are validated. The reliability evaluation results show that the inter-correlations among variables and time-dependent relationships of each variable have great effects on the system reliability assessment. The consideration of linepack can significantly improve the supply reliability of IES whereas the management strategy of linepack may lead to some risky points. © 2022

Floating turbines are installed at progressively increasing water depths, interacting with offshore and deep-sea ecosystems. Thus, specific criteria to enable a sound and accurate Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) are required. The still limited understanding of the impacts of FOWFs, and the concerns for the conflicts in the use of maritime space (e.g., fisheries), might lead to a more precautionary approach and constrain their development. Here we describe the characteristics of the deep habitats potentially impacted and identify a set of comprehensive and standardized criteria, response variables and approaches for a reliable EIA based on an Ecosystem-based approach. These analyses will support an appropriate design and site prioritization to respect the “Do No Significant Harm" principle. Considering the wide heterogeneity among habitats and geographic regions, we examined the potential interactions of FOWFs with i) Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems; ii) critical habitats; iii) migratory routes of large marine vertebrates; iv) habitat-forming species, benthic/pelagic organisms, v) migratory routes of birds/chiropters; vi) other human uses leading to cumulative/synergistic effects and any other potential interference. We identified mitigation and compensation measures and explored the potential of wind-farm areas as “Other Effective Conservation Measures” to support sustainable fisheries and passive restoration. Adequate siting, EIA and systematic monitoring can minimize FOWFs’ environmental interactions, with final negligible, or even positive effects on marine ecosystems. Standardized criteria could significantly reduce the bottlenecks in permitting while offering a strategic vision for the sustainable use of the maritime space.

In recent years, transport policy has strongly been oriented to develop more inclusive cities and to design mobility services aligned to specific users’ needs. In an attempt to guarantee an adequate level of accessibility, especially to vulnerable users, approaches based on the dialogue between public administration, operators, citizens and researchers (so-called “quadruple helix”) have been proposed. The two case studies presented in this article refer to the development of a minibus demand-responsive transport system, devoted mainly to people with reduced mobility, in the cities of Ljubljana and Maribor (Slovenia) designed using a Living Lab participative approach. In fact, urban mobility stakeholders were engaged in this process during the design and monitoring phases of the pilot projects. Their involvement resulted in producing positive outcomes: citizens actively participated in the projects, and the designed service was perceived to be useful and effective. Both projects were successful, as statistics demonstrate, and are expected to be confirmed and strengthened over the next few years.
