To evaluate the performance of the models proposed here, energy, exergy and economic analyses are performed. Several working fluids are evaluated for recommendation for double and added double stage organic Rankine cycle systems. In the double stage organic Rankine cycle, cycle 1 and cycle 2 are connected in parallel. Working fluids R123, R141b, and R601 are used in cycle 1, and R245fa, R236ea, and R1233zd in cycle 2. In the double stage organic Rankine cycle, the working fluid combinations of R601-R1233zd, R601-R245fa and R123-R245fa show better performance when considering power, heat transfer area and payback period, which are 1760 kW, 2108.9 m2 and 4.21 year, respectively for R601-R245fa. In the added double stage organic Rankine cycle, cycle 1 and cycle 2 are connected in two stages and cycle 1 and cycle 3 in parallel. The net power of the working fluid combinations of R123-R245fa and R123-R1233zd are 1799 kW and 1782 kW, respectively, which are higher than those of the others. Further, for R123-R245fa, the heat transfer area and payback period are 3352 m2 and 6.20 year, respectively, which is better compared to those of other working fluid combinations.

Public policy requires public support, which in turn implies a need to enable the public not just to understand policy but also to be engaged in its development. Where complex science and technology issues are involved in policy making, this takes time, so it is important to identify emerging issues of this type and prepare engagement plans. In our horizon scanning exercise, we used a modified Delphi technique. A wide group of people with interests in the science and policy interface (drawn from policy makers, policy adviser, practitioners, the private sector and academics) elicited a long list of emergent policy issues in which science and technology would feature strongly and which would also necessitate public engagement as policies are developed. This was then refined to a short list of top priorities for policy makers. Thirty issues were identified within broad areas of business and technology; energy and environment; government, politics and education; health, healthcare, population and aging; information, communication, infrastructure and transport; and public safety and national security.

This review encompasses the components of biomass integrated gasification–SOFC technology including biomass characteristics, the thermochemical conversion in gasifiers and the factors affecting the gasification process, the cleaning technologies for raw producer gas and its conditioning and finally the integration of gasifier with SOFCs. The influence of impurities present in biomass producer gas such as particulates, tar, H 2 S, HCl and alkali compounds based on recent experimental studies and their tolerance limits towards SOFCs are presented. Even though analysis based on the probable tolerance limits of impurities towards SOFCs and a comprehensive overview of the cleaning technologies for producer gas impurities indicate that producer gas cleaning at various temperatures using current technologies to meet SOFC requirements is possible, more experimental studies are still needed to acquire the detailed information on the tolerance limits of impurities for SOFCs. The recent theoretical modeling and experimental studies of biomass integrated gasification–SOFC systems are also presented.

Cetin; Youngme Seo; Jasmeet Singh; Jongho Im;Abstract For 118 million residential housing units in the U.S., there is currently a gap between the potential energy savings that can be achieved through the use of existing energy efficiency technologies, and the actual level of energy savings realized, particularly for the 37% of housing units that are considered residential rental properties. Additional quantifiable benefits are needed beyond energy savings to help further motivate residential property owners to invest in energy efficiency upgrades. This research focuses on assessing the adoption of energy efficient upgrades in U.S. residential housing and the impact on rental prices. Ten U.S. cities are chosen for analysis; these cities vary in size across multiple climate zones, and represent a diverse set of housing market conditions. Data was collected for over 159,000 rental property listings, their characteristics, and their energy efficiency measures listed in rental housing postings across each city. Following an extensive data quality control process, over thirty different types energy efficient features were identified. The level of adoption was determined for each city, ranging from 5.3% to 21.6%. Efficient lighting and appliances were among the most common, with many features doubling as energy efficient and other desirable aesthetic or comfort improvements. Then using propensity score matching and conditional mean comparison methods, the relative impact on rent charged in each city was calculated, which ranged from a 6% to 14.1% increase in rent for properties with energy efficient features, demonstrating a positive economic impact of these features, particularly for property owners. This was further subdivided into five types of energy efficiency upgrade and three housing types. Single family homes generally demanded higher premiums with energy efficient features, however there was not a consistent pattern across the types of efficient upgrades. The results of this work demonstrate that investment in energy efficient technologies has quantifiable benefits for rental property owners in the U.S. beyond just energy savings. This methodology and results can also be used in other cities and by property owners, utility companies, or others, ultimately encouraging further investment and positive economic impact in residential energy efficiency and in turn improving energy and resource conservation in the building sector.

However, due to its complex nature, appropriate pretreatment is necessary to achieve a higher methane yield. Hence, the current study was envisioned to evaluate the influence of three different pretreatment strategies, namely acid, alkali, and hydrothermal pretreatment on biochemical methane potential (BMP) of seven diverse sorts of Algerian date biomass, namely Pedicels, Fibrilium, Petiole, Fruit bunch, Spath, Palm, and its mixture. Among all the pretreatment conditions, alkaline pretreatment highly influenced the lignin composition of date biomass and showed higher BMP. Among all sorts of biomass, higher BMP was detected through Palm as 295.9 mL CH4/g-TS, whereas the lowest BMP values were recorded with Petiole as 226.74 mL CH4/g-TS. Among all the experimental variations, ammonium pretreated Palm biomass documented the highest substrate conversion efficiency (63.80%), which correlates well with the observed higher BMP values. Nevertheless, there was a very marginal improvement in BMP detected in the case of other pretreatment strategies compared to alkaline pretreatment. This might be due to the efficacy of the applied pretreatment method on delignification of date biomass.

Rosen;Abstract This study develops a novel sustainability assessment methodology for energy systems using life-cycle emission factors and sustainability indicators. Here, the global warming and environmental impact dimensions of the sustainability assessment methodology are examined in detail. A comparative analysis shows that a wind-battery system produces fewer potential global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, air pollution, and water pollution impacts compared to a gas-fired system. The wind-battery system generates 13% of the life-cycle GHG emissions and 22% of the life-cycle ozone-depleting substance emissions of a gas-fired power plant. Nitrous oxide contributes more than 90% of the stratospheric ozone depletion potential of gas-fired and wind-battery systems.

This paper surveyed the soil organic carbon (SOC) stock estimates and sequestration potentials from 20 regions in the world (New Zealand, Chile, South Africa, Australia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, India, China Taiwan, South Korea, China Mainland, United States of America, France, Canada, Belgium, England & Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and Russia). We asked whether the 4 per mille initiative is feasible for the region. The outcomes highlight region specific efforts and scopes for soil carbon sequestration. Reported soil C sequestration rates globally show that under best management practices, 4 per mille or even higher sequestration rates can be accomplished. High C sequestration rates (up to 10 per mille) can be achieved for soils with low initial SOC stock (topsoil less than 30 t C ha− 1), and at the first twenty years after implementation of best management practices. In addition, areas which have reached equilibrium will not be able to further increase their sequestration. We found that most studies on SOC sequestration only consider topsoil (up to 0.3 m depth), as it is considered to be most affected by management techniques. The 4 per mille number was based on a blanket calculation of the whole global soil profile C stock, however the potential to increase SOC is mostly on managed agricultural lands. If we consider 4 per mille in the top 1m of global agricultural soils, SOC sequestration is between 2-3 Gt C year− 1, which effectively offset 20–35% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. As a strategy for climate change mitigation, soil carbon sequestration buys time over the next ten to twenty years while other effective sequestration and low carbon technologies become viable. The challenge for cropping farmers is to find disruptive technologies that will further improve soil condition and deliver increased soil carbon. Progress in 4 per mille requires collaboration and communication between scientists, farmers, policy makers, and marketeers.

The energy crisis and increasing fossil fuel prices due to increasing demands, controlled supplies, and global political unrest have adversely affected agricultural productivity and farm profitability across the globe and Pakistan is not an exception. To cope with this issue of energy deficiency in agriculture, the best alternate strategy is to take advantage of biomass and solid waste potential. In low-income countries such as Pakistan, the greenhouse heating system mostly relies on fossil fuels such as diesel, gasoline, and LPG. Farmers are reluctant to adopt greenhouse farming due to the continuously rising prices of the fossil fuels. To reduce reliance on fossil fuel energy, the objective of this study was to utilize biomass from crop residues to develop an efficient and economical biomass furnace that could heat greenhouses to protect the crop from seasonal temperature effects. Modifications made to the biomass furnace, such as the incorporation of insulation around the walls of the furnace, providing turbulators in fire tubes, and a secondary heat exchanger (heat recovery system) in the chimney, have increased the thermal efficiency of the biomass furnace by about 21.7%. A drastic reduction in hazardous elements of flue gases was observed due to the addition of a water scrubber smoke filter in the exit line of the flue. The efficiency of the biomass furnace ranged from 50.42% to 54.18%, whereas the heating efficiency of the diesel-fired heater was 71.19%. On the basis of the equal heating value of the fuels, the unit material and operating costs of the biomass furnace for wood, cotton stalks, corn cobs, and cow dung were USD 2.04, 1.86, 1.78, and 2.00 respectively against USD 4.67/h for the diesel heater. The capital and operating costs of the biomass furnace were about 50% and 43.7% of the diesel heater respectively, resulting in a seasonal saving of about 1573 USD. The produced smoke was tested as environmental friendly under the prescribed limits of the National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS), which shows potential for its large-scale adoption and wider applications.

Most of the world’s mountain glaciers have been retreating for more than a century in response to climate change. Glacier retreat is evident on all continents, and the rate of retreat has accelerated during recent decades. Accurate, spatially explicit information on the position of glacier margins over time is useful for analyzing patterns of glacier retreat and measuring reductions in glacier surface area. This information is also essential for evaluating how mountain ecosystems are evolving due to climate warming and the attendant glacier retreat. Here, we present a non-comprehensive spatially explicit dataset showing multiple positions of glacier fronts since the Little Ice Age (LIA) maxima, including many data from the pre-satellite era. The dataset is based on multiple historical archival records including topographical maps; repeated photographs, paintings, and aerial or satellite images with a supplement of geochronology; and own field data. We provide ESRI shapefiles showing 728 past positions of 94 glacier fronts from all continents, except Antarctica, covering the period between the Little Ice Age maxima and the present. On average, the time series span the past 190 years. From 2 to 46 past positions per glacier are depicted (on average: 7.8).

Since the meteorological administration mainly has been using human eye method, an automatic cloud height observer is proposed to reduce human errors.The proposed cloud observer system is for the cloud automatic observation system which has been operating at weathers stations in Korea since 1993. The high hand camera is adapted to get high resolution images without a capture board that has the low resolution. And the man-made passive filter for extracting sky reign is replaced by the active filter using image processing. The famous BRISK matching is selected instead of the block mating to get more precise disparity form a pair of stereo image.The Cloud cover announced by the Korean Meteorological Agency is the eye observation result nowadays, even though an intelligent cloud observation system was supplied. The reason is the impermissible error in the observed data of the automatic observation system. The current system is applied a man-made passive filter has to be changed periodically due to the boundary transition, but the proposed system is maintenance-free, since the active filter using edge detection algorithm automatically adjusts itself. The measuring of disparity which is important to analyze spatial information, has improved up to the resolution of observing height is 100m by getting image data directly form the high resolution camera, the old resolution from the capture board. Also, the disparity analyzing method is changed to the BRISK matching algorithm instead of the block mating algorism to get more deliberate disparity analysis since the dimension of the block is too big relatively compare to the cloud in the stereo all sky image. The test results are acceptable range which is human observation value ± 10% since the resolution of observing height is 100m at lower cloud in the sky. The proposed system is conducting the comparison research to compare with the result of reading satellite images and ceilometer.

To evaluate the performance of the models proposed here, energy, exergy and economic analyses are performed. Several working fluids are evaluated for recommendation for double and added double stage organic Rankine cycle systems. In the double stage organic Rankine cycle, cycle 1 and cycle 2 are connected in parallel. Working fluids R123, R141b, and R601 are used in cycle 1, and R245fa, R236ea, and R1233zd in cycle 2. In the double stage organic Rankine cycle, the working fluid combinations of R601-R1233zd, R601-R245fa and R123-R245fa show better performance when considering power, heat transfer area and payback period, which are 1760 kW, 2108.9 m2 and 4.21 year, respectively for R601-R245fa. In the added double stage organic Rankine cycle, cycle 1 and cycle 2 are connected in two stages and cycle 1 and cycle 3 in parallel. The net power of the working fluid combinations of R123-R245fa and R123-R1233zd are 1799 kW and 1782 kW, respectively, which are higher than those of the others. Further, for R123-R245fa, the heat transfer area and payback period are 3352 m2 and 6.20 year, respectively, which is better compared to those of other working fluid combinations.

Public policy requires public support, which in turn implies a need to enable the public not just to understand policy but also to be engaged in its development. Where complex science and technology issues are involved in policy making, this takes time, so it is important to identify emerging issues of this type and prepare engagement plans. In our horizon scanning exercise, we used a modified Delphi technique. A wide group of people with interests in the science and policy interface (drawn from policy makers, policy adviser, practitioners, the private sector and academics) elicited a long list of emergent policy issues in which science and technology would feature strongly and which would also necessitate public engagement as policies are developed. This was then refined to a short list of top priorities for policy makers. Thirty issues were identified within broad areas of business and technology; energy and environment; government, politics and education; health, healthcare, population and aging; information, communication, infrastructure and transport; and public safety and national security.

This review encompasses the components of biomass integrated gasification–SOFC technology including biomass characteristics, the thermochemical conversion in gasifiers and the factors affecting the gasification process, the cleaning technologies for raw producer gas and its conditioning and finally the integration of gasifier with SOFCs. The influence of impurities present in biomass producer gas such as particulates, tar, H 2 S, HCl and alkali compounds based on recent experimental studies and their tolerance limits towards SOFCs are presented. Even though analysis based on the probable tolerance limits of impurities towards SOFCs and a comprehensive overview of the cleaning technologies for producer gas impurities indicate that producer gas cleaning at various temperatures using current technologies to meet SOFC requirements is possible, more experimental studies are still needed to acquire the detailed information on the tolerance limits of impurities for SOFCs. The recent theoretical modeling and experimental studies of biomass integrated gasification–SOFC systems are also presented.

Cetin; Youngme Seo; Jasmeet Singh; Jongho Im;Abstract For 118 million residential housing units in the U.S., there is currently a gap between the potential energy savings that can be achieved through the use of existing energy efficiency technologies, and the actual level of energy savings realized, particularly for the 37% of housing units that are considered residential rental properties. Additional quantifiable benefits are needed beyond energy savings to help further motivate residential property owners to invest in energy efficiency upgrades. This research focuses on assessing the adoption of energy efficient upgrades in U.S. residential housing and the impact on rental prices. Ten U.S. cities are chosen for analysis; these cities vary in size across multiple climate zones, and represent a diverse set of housing market conditions. Data was collected for over 159,000 rental property listings, their characteristics, and their energy efficiency measures listed in rental housing postings across each city. Following an extensive data quality control process, over thirty different types energy efficient features were identified. The level of adoption was determined for each city, ranging from 5.3% to 21.6%. Efficient lighting and appliances were among the most common, with many features doubling as energy efficient and other desirable aesthetic or comfort improvements. Then using propensity score matching and conditional mean comparison methods, the relative impact on rent charged in each city was calculated, which ranged from a 6% to 14.1% increase in rent for properties with energy efficient features, demonstrating a positive economic impact of these features, particularly for property owners. This was further subdivided into five types of energy efficiency upgrade and three housing types. Single family homes generally demanded higher premiums with energy efficient features, however there was not a consistent pattern across the types of efficient upgrades. The results of this work demonstrate that investment in energy efficient technologies has quantifiable benefits for rental property owners in the U.S. beyond just energy savings. This methodology and results can also be used in other cities and by property owners, utility companies, or others, ultimately encouraging further investment and positive economic impact in residential energy efficiency and in turn improving energy and resource conservation in the building sector.

However, due to its complex nature, appropriate pretreatment is necessary to achieve a higher methane yield. Hence, the current study was envisioned to evaluate the influence of three different pretreatment strategies, namely acid, alkali, and hydrothermal pretreatment on biochemical methane potential (BMP) of seven diverse sorts of Algerian date biomass, namely Pedicels, Fibrilium, Petiole, Fruit bunch, Spath, Palm, and its mixture. Among all the pretreatment conditions, alkaline pretreatment highly influenced the lignin composition of date biomass and showed higher BMP. Among all sorts of biomass, higher BMP was detected through Palm as 295.9 mL CH4/g-TS, whereas the lowest BMP values were recorded with Petiole as 226.74 mL CH4/g-TS. Among all the experimental variations, ammonium pretreated Palm biomass documented the highest substrate conversion efficiency (63.80%), which correlates well with the observed higher BMP values. Nevertheless, there was a very marginal improvement in BMP detected in the case of other pretreatment strategies compared to alkaline pretreatment. This might be due to the efficacy of the applied pretreatment method on delignification of date biomass.

Here, the global warming and environmental impact dimensions of the sustainability assessment methodology are examined in detail. A comparative analysis shows that a wind-battery system produces fewer potential global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, air pollution, and water pollution impacts compared to a gas-fired system. The wind-battery system generates 13% of the life-cycle GHG emissions and 22% of the life-cycle ozone-depleting substance emissions of a gas-fired power plant. Nitrous oxide contributes more than 90% of the stratospheric ozone depletion potential of gas-fired and wind-battery systems.

This paper surveyed the soil organic carbon (SOC) stock estimates and sequestration potentials from 20 regions in the world (New Zealand, Chile, South Africa, Australia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, India, China Taiwan, South Korea, China Mainland, United States of America, France, Canada, Belgium, England & Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and Russia). We asked whether the 4 per mille initiative is feasible for the region. The outcomes highlight region specific efforts and scopes for soil carbon sequestration. Reported soil C sequestration rates globally show that under best management practices, 4 per mille or even higher sequestration rates can be accomplished. High C sequestration rates (up to 10 per mille) can be achieved for soils with low initial SOC stock (topsoil less than 30 t C ha− 1), and at the first twenty years after implementation of best management practices. In addition, areas which have reached equilibrium will not be able to further increase their sequestration. We found that most studies on SOC sequestration only consider topsoil (up to 0.3 m depth), as it is considered to be most affected by management techniques. The 4 per mille number was based on a blanket calculation of the whole global soil profile C stock, however the potential to increase SOC is mostly on managed agricultural lands. If we consider 4 per mille in the top 1m of global agricultural soils, SOC sequestration is between 2-3 Gt C year− 1, which effectively offset 20–35% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. As a strategy for climate change mitigation, soil carbon sequestration buys time over the next ten to twenty years while other effective sequestration and low carbon technologies become viable. The challenge for cropping farmers is to find disruptive technologies that will further improve soil condition and deliver increased soil carbon. Progress in 4 per mille requires collaboration and communication between scientists, farmers, policy makers, and marketeers.

The energy crisis and increasing fossil fuel prices due to increasing demands, controlled supplies, and global political unrest have adversely affected agricultural productivity and farm profitability across the globe and Pakistan is not an exception. To cope with this issue of energy deficiency in agriculture, the best alternate strategy is to take advantage of biomass and solid waste potential. In low-income countries such as Pakistan, the greenhouse heating system mostly relies on fossil fuels such as diesel, gasoline, and LPG. Farmers are reluctant to adopt greenhouse farming due to the continuously rising prices of the fossil fuels. To reduce reliance on fossil fuel energy, the objective of this study was to utilize biomass from crop residues to develop an efficient and economical biomass furnace that could heat greenhouses to protect the crop from seasonal temperature effects. Modifications made to the biomass furnace, such as the incorporation of insulation around the walls of the furnace, providing turbulators in fire tubes, and a secondary heat exchanger (heat recovery system) in the chimney, have increased the thermal efficiency of the biomass furnace by about 21.7%. A drastic reduction in hazardous elements of flue gases was observed due to the addition of a water scrubber smoke filter in the exit line of the flue. The efficiency of the biomass furnace ranged from 50.42% to 54.18%, whereas the heating efficiency of the diesel-fired heater was 71.19%. On the basis of the equal heating value of the fuels, the unit material and operating costs of the biomass furnace for wood, cotton stalks, corn cobs, and cow dung were USD 2.04, 1.86, 1.78, and 2.00 respectively against USD 4.67/h for the diesel heater. The capital and operating costs of the biomass furnace were about 50% and 43.7% of the diesel heater respectively, resulting in a seasonal saving of about 1573 USD. The produced smoke was tested as environmental friendly under the prescribed limits of the National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS), which shows potential for its large-scale adoption and wider applications.

Most of the world’s mountain glaciers have been retreating for more than a century in response to climate change. Glacier retreat is evident on all continents, and the rate of retreat has accelerated during recent decades. Accurate, spatially explicit information on the position of glacier margins over time is useful for analyzing patterns of glacier retreat and measuring reductions in glacier surface area. This information is also essential for evaluating how mountain ecosystems are evolving due to climate warming and the attendant glacier retreat. Here, we present a non-comprehensive spatially explicit dataset showing multiple positions of glacier fronts since the Little Ice Age (LIA) maxima, including many data from the pre-satellite era. The dataset is based on multiple historical archival records including topographical maps; repeated photographs, paintings, and aerial or satellite images with a supplement of geochronology; and own field data. We provide ESRI shapefiles showing 728 past positions of 94 glacier fronts from all continents, except Antarctica, covering the period between the Little Ice Age maxima and the present. On average, the time series span the past 190 years. From 2 to 46 past positions per glacier are depicted (on average: 7.8).

Since the meteorological administration mainly has been using human eye method, an automatic cloud height observer is proposed to reduce human errors.The proposed cloud observer system is for the cloud automatic observation system which has been operating at weathers stations in Korea since 1993. The high hand camera is adapted to get high resolution images without a capture board that has the low resolution. And the man-made passive filter for extracting sky reign is replaced by the active filter using image processing. The famous BRISK matching is selected instead of the block mating to get more precise disparity form a pair of stereo image.The Cloud cover announced by the Korean Meteorological Agency is the eye observation result nowadays, even though an intelligent cloud observation system was supplied. The reason is the impermissible error in the observed data of the automatic observation system. The current system is applied a man-made passive filter has to be changed periodically due to the boundary transition, but the proposed system is maintenance-free, since the active filter using edge detection algorithm automatically adjusts itself. The measuring of disparity which is important to analyze spatial information, has improved up to the resolution of observing height is 100m by getting image data directly form the high resolution camera, the old resolution from the capture board. Also, the disparity analyzing method is changed to the BRISK matching algorithm instead of the block mating algorism to get more deliberate disparity analysis since the dimension of the block is too big relatively compare to the cloud in the stereo all sky image. The test results are acceptable range which is human observation value ± 10% since the resolution of observing height is 100m at lower cloud in the sky. The proposed system is conducting the comparison research to compare with the result of reading satellite images and ceilometer.
