The analysis of system-inherent disturbances requires accurate simulation models for both short-term transients or long-term driving cycles. The electrical behavior of electromechanical actuators such as brake or steering highly depends on the mechanical environmental interaction being dependent many variables. This contribution presents a methodology to extract abstracted models of machine driven actuators on the basis of an electric steering. The dynamics of a complex electromechanical model are investigated using pulse response analysis for differentiated operation points. The obtained model reduction is implemented in a frequency-dependent equivalent circuit.

Our approach to modeling is to build upon an established model of the low voltage electricity network which is tested and proven, by extending it to a generalized energy model. But, in order to address the crucial issues of energy efficiency, additional processes like energy conversion and storage, and further energy carriers, such as gas, heat, etc., besides the traditional electrical one, must be considered. Therefore a more powerful model, provided with enhanced nodes or conversion points, able to deal with multidimensional flows, is being required. This article addresses the issue of modeling a local multi-carrier energy network. This problem can be considered as an extension of modeling a low voltage distribution network located at some urban or rural geographic area. But instead of using an external power flow analysis package to do the power flow calculations, as used in electric networks, in this work we integrate a multiagent algorithm to perform the task, in a concurrent way to the other simulation tasks, and not only for the electric fluid but also for a number of additional energy carriers. As the model is mainly focused in system operation, generation and load models are not developed. Numerical simulations have been employed to locate the critical regions during thermal loading, for which analytical solutions have been derived and validated by numerical simulations. The analytical solutions allow a fast screening of materials and design parameters in relation to the stresses induced by thermomechanical loading. Maximum stresses in the system have been quantified based on the thermomechanical properties of three heat exchanger materials selected by design engineers and of the filling material. Sensitivity analyses indicate that the stress distribution is very sensitive to the thermal expansion coefficients of the involved materials. The results of this study can serve as a guide line for the design of the present and similar heat storage systems. The analytical solution developed is a fast and robust method for the evaluation of stresses around heat exchangers embedded in a solid material and can serve as a tool for design optimisation.

With the rapid development of the renewable energy source (RES), network congestion management is increasingly important for transmission system operators (TSOs). The limited transmission network capacity and traditional intervention methods result in high RES curtailment. The near-term, powerful, and flexible solutions, such as advanced flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), are considered to mitigate the risks. The mobile modular static synchronous series compensator (MSSSC) is one of the grid-enhancing solutions. The mobility of the solution allows it to offer fast deployment and seasonal redeployability with limited cost. The demonstration of the mobile MSSSC solution has shown significant benefits for RES curtailment reduction, network congestion alleviation, and facilitating the demand and RES connection. For unlocking the true value of the mobile solution, they should be optimally allocated in the transmission networks. This paper develops a security-constrained DCOPF-based optimisation tool to investigate the optimal allocation of the mobile MSSSC solution in transmission networks. A linear mobile MSSSC model with the operation dead-band was introduced that can be used in large-scale realistic power system planning. The proposed model was implemented in the IEEE 118-bus system to assess the performance of the mobile MSSSC.

SummaryEnvironmentally extended multiregional input‐output (EE MRIO) tables have emerged as a key framework to provide a comprehensive description of the global economy and analyze its effects on the environment. Of the available EE MRIO databases, EXIOBASE stands out as a database compatible with the System of Environmental‐Economic Accounting (SEEA) with a high sectorial detail matched with multiple social and environmental satellite accounts. In this paper, we present the latest developments realized with EXIOBASE 3—a time series of EE MRIO tables ranging from 1995 to 2011 for 44 countries (28 EU member plus 16 major economies) and five rest of the world regions. EXIOBASE 3 builds upon the previous versions of EXIOBASE by using rectangular supply‐use tables (SUTs) in a 163 industry by 200 products classification as the main building blocks. In order to capture structural changes, economic developments, as reported by national statistical agencies, were imposed on the available, disaggregated SUTs from EXIOBASE 2. These initial estimates were further refined by incorporating detailed data on energy, agricultural production, resource extraction, and bilateral trade. EXIOBASE 3 inherits the high level of environmental stressor detail from its precursor, with further improvement in the level of detail for resource extraction. To account for the expansion of the European Union (EU), EXIOBASE 3 was developed with the full EU28 country set (including the new member state Croatia). EXIOBASE 3 provides a unique tool for analyzing the dynamics of environmental pressures of economic activities over time.

The equivalent circuit based model describes the voltage-current characteristic, the state of charge behavior and the occurring losses of the battery system. A parameter identification method based on three characteristic experiments, a cycle test, an open circuit voltage test and pulse tests, is introduced. The model parameters are estimated employing a nonlinear optimization method. Furthermore, the experimental test bed for investigation of lithium-ion battery systems is described. The battery model approach is demonstrated and validated for a commercial 5 kWh lithium-ion battery system, including the model validation for test profiles and emulated battery charging and discharging profiles of a real photovoltaic home storage application. The comparison of measured and simulated voltage profiles indicates an excellent performance of the battery model.

Casartelli;The flow field in a subsonic vaned radial diffuser of a single-stage centrifugal compressor is numerically investigated using a three-dimensional Navier–Stokes solver (TASCflow) and a two-dimensional analysis and inverse-design software package (MISES). The vane geometry is modified in the leading edge area (two-dimensional blade shaping) using MISES, without changing the diffuser throughflow characteristics. An analysis of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional effects of two redesigns on the flow in each of the diffuser subcomponents is performed in terms of static pressure recovery, total pressure loss production, and secondary flow reduction. The computed characteristic lines are compared with measurements, which confirm the improvement obtained by the leading edge redesign in terms of increased pressure rise and operating range.

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a gas injection technology that enables the storage of CO2 underground. The aims are twofold, on one hand to reduce the emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere and on the other hand to increase oil/gas/heat recovery. Different types of CCUS technologies and related engineering projects have a long history of research and operation in the USA. However, in China they have a short development period ca. 10 years. Unlike CO2 capture and CO2-EOR technologies that are already operating on a commercial scale in China, research into other CCUS technologies is still in its infancy or at the pilot-scale. This paper first reviews the status and development of the different types of CCUS technologies and related engineering projects worldwide. Then it focuses on their developments in China in the last decade. The main research projects, international cooperation, and pilot-scale engineering projects in China are summarized and compared. Finally, the paper examines the challenges and prospects to be experienced through the industrialization of CCUS engineering projects in China. It can be concluded that the CCUS technologies have still large potential in China. It can only be unlocked by overcoming the technical and social challenges.

Sievers;The estimation of leak and break frequencies in piping systems is part of the probabilistic safety assessment of technical plants. In this paper, a statistical method based on the evaluation of German operational experience for piping systems with different diameters is described because an earlier estimation has been updated and extended introducing new methodical aspects and data. A major point is the inclusion of structural reliability models based on fracture mechanics calculation procedures. As an example of application the statistical estimation method for leak and break frequencies of piping systems with a nominal diameter of 50 mm (the volume control system of a German pressurized water reactor) was updated. Moreover, the evaluation of the operational experience was extended to 341 years with respect to cracks, leaks and breaks in the volume control system of German pressurized water reactors (PWR). Using the actual database, new calculations of leak and break frequencies have been performed and the results have been compared with previous values.

Bozorg;Abstract The consumption of buildings for the production of heat is expected to decrease in Switzerland in the coming years, in particular following policies encouraging the refurbishment of buildings. This will notably have an impact on the natural gas network, in parallel with the penetration of electric-driven heat pumps. Through a detailed optimization scheme, the evolution of the natural gas (NG) distribution network is studied over a future period of forty years, i.e. up to 2050, on the territory of a large Swiss canton. By way of installing large shares of co-generation units, it is shown that the NG network does not lose its meshed structure, while continuing to play a central role in the production of heat and the generation of part of the additional electricity demand associated with the concomitant penetration of heat pumps. As a novel result, the developed optimization framework allows a detailed, geographically precise view of both the evolution of the NG network, as well as of the optimal location of selected technologies. The adoption of energy networks convergence in urban zones therefore can lead to relevant synergies, avoiding over-investments, increasing system resilience and fostering the use of efficient technologies.

The analysis of system-inherent disturbances requires accurate simulation models for both short-term transients or long-term driving cycles. The electrical behavior of electromechanical actuators such as brake or steering highly depends on the mechanical environmental interaction being dependent many variables. This contribution presents a methodology to extract abstracted models of machine driven actuators on the basis of an electric steering. The dynamics of a complex electromechanical model are investigated using pulse response analysis for differentiated operation points. The obtained model reduction is implemented in a frequency-dependent equivalent circuit.

Our approach to modeling is to build upon an established model of the low voltage electricity network which is tested and proven, by extending it to a generalized energy model. But, in order to address the crucial issues of energy efficiency, additional processes like energy conversion and storage, and further energy carriers, such as gas, heat, etc., besides the traditional electrical one, must be considered. Therefore a more powerful model, provided with enhanced nodes or conversion points, able to deal with multidimensional flows, is being required. This article addresses the issue of modeling a local multi-carrier energy network. This problem can be considered as an extension of modeling a low voltage distribution network located at some urban or rural geographic area. But instead of using an external power flow analysis package to do the power flow calculations, as used in electric networks, in this work we integrate a multiagent algorithm to perform the task, in a concurrent way to the other simulation tasks, and not only for the electric fluid but also for a number of additional energy carriers. As the model is mainly focused in system operation, generation and load models are not developed. Numerical simulations have been employed to locate the critical regions during thermal loading, for which analytical solutions have been derived and validated by numerical simulations. The analytical solutions allow a fast screening of materials and design parameters in relation to the stresses induced by thermomechanical loading. Maximum stresses in the system have been quantified based on the thermomechanical properties of three heat exchanger materials selected by design engineers and of the filling material. Sensitivity analyses indicate that the stress distribution is very sensitive to the thermal expansion coefficients of the involved materials. The results of this study can serve as a guide line for the design of the present and similar heat storage systems. The analytical solution developed is a fast and robust method for the evaluation of stresses around heat exchangers embedded in a solid material and can serve as a tool for design optimisation.

With the rapid development of the renewable energy source (RES), network congestion management is increasingly important for transmission system operators (TSOs). The limited transmission network capacity and traditional intervention methods result in high RES curtailment. The near-term, powerful, and flexible solutions, such as advanced flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), are considered to mitigate the risks. The mobile modular static synchronous series compensator (MSSSC) is one of the grid-enhancing solutions. The mobility of the solution allows it to offer fast deployment and seasonal redeployability with limited cost. The demonstration of the mobile MSSSC solution has shown significant benefits for RES curtailment reduction, network congestion alleviation, and facilitating the demand and RES connection. For unlocking the true value of the mobile solution, they should be optimally allocated in the transmission networks. This paper develops a security-constrained DCOPF-based optimisation tool to investigate the optimal allocation of the mobile MSSSC solution in transmission networks. A linear mobile MSSSC model with the operation dead-band was introduced that can be used in large-scale realistic power system planning. The proposed model was implemented in the IEEE 118-bus system to assess the performance of the mobile MSSSC.

SummaryEnvironmentally extended multiregional input‐output (EE MRIO) tables have emerged as a key framework to provide a comprehensive description of the global economy and analyze its effects on the environment. Of the available EE MRIO databases, EXIOBASE stands out as a database compatible with the System of Environmental‐Economic Accounting (SEEA) with a high sectorial detail matched with multiple social and environmental satellite accounts. In this paper, we present the latest developments realized with EXIOBASE 3—a time series of EE MRIO tables ranging from 1995 to 2011 for 44 countries (28 EU member plus 16 major economies) and five rest of the world regions. EXIOBASE 3 builds upon the previous versions of EXIOBASE by using rectangular supply‐use tables (SUTs) in a 163 industry by 200 products classification as the main building blocks. In order to capture structural changes, economic developments, as reported by national statistical agencies, were imposed on the available, disaggregated SUTs from EXIOBASE 2. These initial estimates were further refined by incorporating detailed data on energy, agricultural production, resource extraction, and bilateral trade. EXIOBASE 3 inherits the high level of environmental stressor detail from its precursor, with further improvement in the level of detail for resource extraction. To account for the expansion of the European Union (EU), EXIOBASE 3 was developed with the full EU28 country set (including the new member state Croatia). EXIOBASE 3 provides a unique tool for analyzing the dynamics of environmental pressures of economic activities over time.

The equivalent circuit based model describes the voltage-current characteristic, the state of charge behavior and the occurring losses of the battery system. The model parameters are estimated employing a nonlinear optimization method. Furthermore, the experimental test bed for investigation of lithium-ion battery systems is described. The battery model approach is demonstrated and validated for a commercial 5 kWh lithium-ion battery system, including the model validation for test profiles and emulated battery charging and discharging profiles of a real photovoltaic home storage application. The comparison of measured and simulated voltage profiles indicates an excellent performance of the battery model.

Casartelli;The flow field in a subsonic vaned radial diffuser of a single-stage centrifugal compressor is numerically investigated using a three-dimensional Navier–Stokes solver (TASCflow) and a two-dimensional analysis and inverse-design software package (MISES). The vane geometry is modified in the leading edge area (two-dimensional blade shaping) using MISES, without changing the diffuser throughflow characteristics. An analysis of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional effects of two redesigns on the flow in each of the diffuser subcomponents is performed in terms of static pressure recovery, total pressure loss production, and secondary flow reduction. The computed characteristic lines are compared with measurements, which confirm the improvement obtained by the leading edge redesign in terms of increased pressure rise and operating range.

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a gas injection technology that enables the storage of CO2 underground. The aims are twofold, on one hand to reduce the emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere and on the other hand to increase oil/gas/heat recovery. Different types of CCUS technologies and related engineering projects have a long history of research and operation in the USA. However, in China they have a short development period ca. 10 years. Unlike CO2 capture and CO2-EOR technologies that are already operating on a commercial scale in China, research into other CCUS technologies is still in its infancy or at the pilot-scale. This paper first reviews the status and development of the different types of CCUS technologies and related engineering projects worldwide. Then it focuses on their developments in China in the last decade. The main research projects, international cooperation, and pilot-scale engineering projects in China are summarized and compared. Finally, the paper examines the challenges and prospects to be experienced through the industrialization of CCUS engineering projects in China. It can be concluded that the CCUS technologies have still large potential in China. It can only be unlocked by overcoming the technical and social challenges.

Sievers;The estimation of leak and break frequencies in piping systems is part of the probabilistic safety assessment of technical plants. In this paper, a statistical method based on the evaluation of German operational experience for piping systems with different diameters is described because an earlier estimation has been updated and extended introducing new methodical aspects and data. A major point is the inclusion of structural reliability models based on fracture mechanics calculation procedures. As an example of application the statistical estimation method for leak and break frequencies of piping systems with a nominal diameter of 50 mm (the volume control system of a German pressurized water reactor) was updated. Moreover, the evaluation of the operational experience was extended to 341 years with respect to cracks, leaks and breaks in the volume control system of German pressurized water reactors (PWR). Using the actual database, new calculations of leak and break frequencies have been performed and the results have been compared with previous values.

Bozorg;Abstract The consumption of buildings for the production of heat is expected to decrease in Switzerland in the coming years, in particular following policies encouraging the refurbishment of buildings. This will notably have an impact on the natural gas network, in parallel with the penetration of electric-driven heat pumps. Through a detailed optimization scheme, the evolution of the natural gas (NG) distribution network is studied over a future period of forty years, i.e. up to 2050, on the territory of a large Swiss canton. By way of installing large shares of co-generation units, it is shown that the NG network does not lose its meshed structure, while continuing to play a central role in the production of heat and the generation of part of the additional electricity demand associated with the concomitant penetration of heat pumps. As a novel result, the developed optimization framework allows a detailed, geographically precise view of both the evolution of the NG network, as well as of the optimal location of selected technologies. The adoption of energy networks convergence in urban zones therefore can lead to relevant synergies, avoiding over-investments, increasing system resilience and fostering the use of efficient technologies.
