    <p>High temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES) can play a key role for a sustainable interplay between different energy sources and in the overall reduction of CO<sub>2</sub>emission. In this study, we numerically investigate the thermo-hydraulic processes of an HT-ATES in the Greater Geneva Basin (Switzerland). The main objective is to investigate how to handle the yearly excess of heat produced by a nearby waste-to-energy plant. We consider potential aquifers located in different stratigraphic units and design the model from available geological and geophysical data. Aquifer properties, flow conditions and well strategies are successively tested to evaluate their influence on the HT-ATES economic performance and environmental impact. This was achieved using a new open-access, user-friendly and efficient code that we also introduce here as a possible tool for geothermal applications.</p><p> </p><p>The results highlight the importance of thorough numerical simulations based on more realistic exploitation when designing HT-ATES systems. We show that relations between thermal performance and the shape of the injected thermal volume are generally hard to derive when complex well schedules are imposed because the injected/produced volumes may not be equal. Despite more complex storage strategies to comply with legal regulations, the shallower group of investigated aquifers in this study remains economically more suitable for storage up to 90ºC. In average four well doublets will be required to store the yearly excess of energy. The deeper group of investigated aquifers, however, become interesting for storage at higher temperatures.</p>

    Global issues are such that we should assess and manage a variety of risks and uncertainties. Due to increasing world complexity, the development of an adequate and innovative conceptual framework, anchored in the literature, is required. This article contributes to this effort with an approach particularly relevant to decision-makers dealing with threats of different natures, limited heterogeneous information, and experts’ assessments tainted by doubts. Our approach is based on two pillars: 1) An “acuity scale”, based on the probability of the occurrence of an event, its impact and the experts’ degree of doubt; 2) A taxonomy focused on the concepts of risk, uncertainty, gamble and butterfly ambiguity. Accordingly, we present in a second step the major management implications of such approach. Global policy trends (e.g., sustainability transition) put energy sector decision-makers at the forefront of risk and uncertainty management. Consequently, we carry out a case study focused on Swiss energy policy since the 1980s, including its inception, the turnaround provoked by the Fukushima accident, and the government’s 2050 energy strategy. Our investigation shows that the proposed conceptual framework allows for the development of an original analysis of the main drivers that influence governmental policies and stakeholder strategies.

    Abstract The storage of heat in aquifers, also referred to as Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES), bears a high potential to bridge the seasonal gap between periods of highest thermal energy demand and supply. With storage temperatures higher than 50 °C, High-Temperature (HT) ATES is capable to facilitate the integration of (non-)renewable heat sources into complex energy systems. While the complexity of ATES technology is positively correlated to the required storage temperature, HT-ATES faces multidisciplinary challenges and risks impeding a rapid market uptake worldwide. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide an overview and analysis of these risks of HT-ATES to facilitate global technology adoption. Risk are identified considering experiences of past HT-ATES projects and analyzed by ATES and geothermal energy experts. An online survey among 38 international experts revealed that technical risks are expected to be less critical than legal, social and organizational risks. This is confirmed by the lessons learned from past HT-ATES projects, where high heat recovery values were achieved, and technical feasibility was demonstrated. Although HT-ATES is less flexible than competing technologies such as pits or buffer tanks, the main problems encountered are attributed to a loss of the heat source and fluctuating or decreasing heating demands. Considering that a HT-ATES system has a lifetime of more than 30 years, it is crucial to develop energy concepts which take into account the conditions both for heat sources and heat sinks. Finally, a site-specific risk analysis for HT-ATES in the city of Hamburg revealed that some risks strongly depend on local boundary conditions. A project-specific risk management is therefore indispensable and should be addressed in future research and project developments.

    AbstractIntegrated assessment models (IAMs) have emerged as key tools for building and assessing long term climate mitigation scenarios. Due to their central role in the recent IPCC assessments, and international climate policy analyses more generally, and the high uncertainties related to future projections, IAMs have been critically assessed by scholars from different fields receiving various critiques ranging from adequacy of their methods to how their results are used and communicated. Although IAMs are conceptually diverse and evolved in very different directions, they tend to be criticised under the umbrella of ‘IAMs’. Here we first briefly summarise the IAM landscape and how models differ from each other. We then proceed to discuss six prominent critiques emerging from the recent literature, reflect and respond to them in the light of IAM diversity and ongoing work and suggest ways forward. The six critiques relate to (a) representation of heterogeneous actors in the models, (b) modelling of technology diffusion and dynamics, (c) representation of capital markets, (d) energy-economy feedbacks, (e) policy scenarios, and (f) interpretation and use of model results.

    This paper gives a detailed description of the ETEM-SG model, which provides a simulation of the long -term development of a regional multi-energy system in a smart city environment. The originality of the modeling comes from a representation of the power distribution constraints associated with intermittent and volatile renewable energy sources connected at the transmission network like, e.g., wind farms, or the distribution networks like, e.g., roof top PV panels). The model takes into account the options to optimize the power system provided by grid-friendly flexible loads and distributed energy resources, including variable speed drive powered CHP micro-generators, heat pumps, and electric vehicles. One deals with uncertainties in some parameters by implementing robust optimization techniques. A case study, based on the modeling of the energy system of the “Arc Lemanique” region, shows on simulation results, the importance of introducing a representation of power distribution constraints, and options in a regional energy model.

    Abstract In this study, natural convection inside a square cavity filled with nanofluids with several pairs of heaters and coolers (HACs) inside is investigated numerically in the range of Rayleigh numbers between 10 4 and 10 7 . Walls of the cavity are insulated and heaters and coolers walls are isothermal with temperatures of T h and T c ( T h > T c ). Two-dimensional Navier–Stokes and energy equations are solved using finite volume discretization method. Effects of various design parameters on the heat transfer rate are investigated. Design parameters considered in this study are: position, surface area, shape and orientation of HACs, volume fraction and types of nanoparticles. The results show that the highest and the lowest impacts of design parameters, on the enhancement of heat transfer rate are caused by changing the HAC position and types of nanoparticles, respectively. Moreover, it is found that for a constant surface area of the HAC at the entire range of Rayleigh number, rate of the heat transfer increases with changing orientation of the HAC from horizontal to vertical. Our simulations indicate that the heat transfer rate at all Rayleigh numbers can be enhanced more efficiently by increasing number of HACs than increasing the HAC size. The optimum value of volume fraction of nanoparticles which result in the highest rate of heat transfer in most cases found to be equal to 1%, and beyond that the heat transfer rate decreases.

    Abstract A statistical analysis of more than 6,000 energy performance certificates including retrofit options proposed by experts for different building elements is performed. This provides an overview of the most commonly suggested renovation measures and their estimated investment costs and U-Values. Based on an energy model of the Swiss residential building stock (SwissRes), the theoretical energy savings are estimated. Together with the estimated investment costs, the levelized costs of each renovation measure is then determined in order to identify the most cost-effective measures. It is shown that a large-scale energy retrofit of the residential building stock would result in theoretical energy savings of up to 84% regarding the current simulated energy demand. Yet, existing technical and social constraints would lower the expected energy savings significantly. None of the selected measures is cost-effective, but under a more optimistic scenario, the cost-effective share reaches up to 85% of the total potential energy savings.

    While recent studies have shown an important gap between design and real energy use of multifamily buildings, this study analyses the energy performance gap for student housing. A very high energy performance (VHEP) student residency was analysed in detail, followed by a comparison of energy and water consumption with student residencies and other dwellings in Geneva. The analysis shows that for this VHEP residency the limit values according to the actual thermal regulations and MINERGIE label are exceeded: actual heat demand is 98 MJ/m2.a for heating (without double-flow ventilation) and 116 MJ/m2.a for hot water while the MINERGIE-index is 137 MJ/m2 (38 kWh/m2.a). Nevertheless, its thermal energy consumption (IDC=224 MJ/m2.a) is similar to other VHEP buildings, and half of Geneva's average values. The study points to factors which highly influence real performance of VHEP buildings and concludes that there is a huge optimisation potential during use phase of a building.

    <p>High temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES) can play a key role for a sustainable interplay between different energy sources and in the overall reduction of CO<sub>2</sub>emission. In this study, we numerically investigate the thermo-hydraulic processes of an HT-ATES in the Greater Geneva Basin (Switzerland). The main objective is to investigate how to handle the yearly excess of heat produced by a nearby waste-to-energy plant. We consider potential aquifers located in different stratigraphic units and design the model from available geological and geophysical data. Aquifer properties, flow conditions and well strategies are successively tested to evaluate their influence on the HT-ATES economic performance and environmental impact. This was achieved using a new open-access, user-friendly and efficient code that we also introduce here as a possible tool for geothermal applications.</p><p> </p><p>The results highlight the importance of thorough numerical simulations based on more realistic exploitation when designing HT-ATES systems. We show that relations between thermal performance and the shape of the injected thermal volume are generally hard to derive when complex well schedules are imposed because the injected/produced volumes may not be equal. Despite more complex storage strategies to comply with legal regulations, the shallower group of investigated aquifers in this study remains economically more suitable for storage up to 90ºC. In average four well doublets will be required to store the yearly excess of energy. The deeper group of investigated aquifers, however, become interesting for storage at higher temperatures.</p>

    Global issues are such that we should assess and manage a variety of risks and uncertainties. Due to increasing world complexity, the development of an adequate and innovative conceptual framework, anchored in the literature, is required. This article contributes to this effort with an approach particularly relevant to decision-makers dealing with threats of different natures, limited heterogeneous information, and experts’ assessments tainted by doubts. Our approach is based on two pillars: 1) An “acuity scale”, based on the probability of the occurrence of an event, its impact and the experts’ degree of doubt; 2) A taxonomy focused on the concepts of risk, uncertainty, gamble and butterfly ambiguity. Accordingly, we present in a second step the major management implications of such approach. Global policy trends (e.g., sustainability transition) put energy sector decision-makers at the forefront of risk and uncertainty management. Consequently, we carry out a case study focused on Swiss energy policy since the 1980s, including its inception, the turnaround provoked by the Fukushima accident, and the government’s 2050 energy strategy. Our investigation shows that the proposed conceptual framework allows for the development of an original analysis of the main drivers that influence governmental policies and stakeholder strategies.

    Abstract The storage of heat in aquifers, also referred to as Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES), bears a high potential to bridge the seasonal gap between periods of highest thermal energy demand and supply. With storage temperatures higher than 50 °C, High-Temperature (HT) ATES is capable to facilitate the integration of (non-)renewable heat sources into complex energy systems. While the complexity of ATES technology is positively correlated to the required storage temperature, HT-ATES faces multidisciplinary challenges and risks impeding a rapid market uptake worldwide. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide an overview and analysis of these risks of HT-ATES to facilitate global technology adoption. Risk are identified considering experiences of past HT-ATES projects and analyzed by ATES and geothermal energy experts. An online survey among 38 international experts revealed that technical risks are expected to be less critical than legal, social and organizational risks. This is confirmed by the lessons learned from past HT-ATES projects, where high heat recovery values were achieved, and technical feasibility was demonstrated. Although HT-ATES is less flexible than competing technologies such as pits or buffer tanks, the main problems encountered are attributed to a loss of the heat source and fluctuating or decreasing heating demands. Considering that a HT-ATES system has a lifetime of more than 30 years, it is crucial to develop energy concepts which take into account the conditions both for heat sources and heat sinks. Finally, a site-specific risk analysis for HT-ATES in the city of Hamburg revealed that some risks strongly depend on local boundary conditions. A project-specific risk management is therefore indispensable and should be addressed in future research and project developments.

    AbstractIntegrated assessment models (IAMs) have emerged as key tools for building and assessing long term climate mitigation scenarios. Due to their central role in the recent IPCC assessments, and international climate policy analyses more generally, and the high uncertainties related to future projections, IAMs have been critically assessed by scholars from different fields receiving various critiques ranging from adequacy of their methods to how their results are used and communicated. Although IAMs are conceptually diverse and evolved in very different directions, they tend to be criticised under the umbrella of ‘IAMs’. Here we first briefly summarise the IAM landscape and how models differ from each other. We then proceed to discuss six prominent critiques emerging from the recent literature, reflect and respond to them in the light of IAM diversity and ongoing work and suggest ways forward. The six critiques relate to (a) representation of heterogeneous actors in the models, (b) modelling of technology diffusion and dynamics, (c) representation of capital markets, (d) energy-economy feedbacks, (e) policy scenarios, and (f) interpretation and use of model results.

    This paper gives a detailed description of the ETEM-SG model, which provides a simulation of the long -term development of a regional multi-energy system in a smart city environment. The originality of the modeling comes from a representation of the power distribution constraints associated with intermittent and volatile renewable energy sources connected at the transmission network like, e.g., wind farms, or the distribution networks like, e.g., roof top PV panels). The model takes into account the options to optimize the power system provided by grid-friendly flexible loads and distributed energy resources, including variable speed drive powered CHP micro-generators, heat pumps, and electric vehicles. One deals with uncertainties in some parameters by implementing robust optimization techniques. A case study, based on the modeling of the energy system of the “Arc Lemanique” region, shows on simulation results, the importance of introducing a representation of power distribution constraints, and options in a regional energy model.

    Abstract In this study, natural convection inside a square cavity filled with nanofluids with several pairs of heaters and coolers (HACs) inside is investigated numerically in the range of Rayleigh numbers between 10 4 and 10 7 . Walls of the cavity are insulated and heaters and coolers walls are isothermal with temperatures of T h and T c ( T h > T c ). Two-dimensional Navier–Stokes and energy equations are solved using finite volume discretization method. Effects of various design parameters on the heat transfer rate are investigated. Design parameters considered in this study are: position, surface area, shape and orientation of HACs, volume fraction and types of nanoparticles. The results show that the highest and the lowest impacts of design parameters, on the enhancement of heat transfer rate are caused by changing the HAC position and types of nanoparticles, respectively. Moreover, it is found that for a constant surface area of the HAC at the entire range of Rayleigh number, rate of the heat transfer increases with changing orientation of the HAC from horizontal to vertical. Our simulations indicate that the heat transfer rate at all Rayleigh numbers can be enhanced more efficiently by increasing number of HACs than increasing the HAC size.     Abstract A statistical analysis of more than 6,000 energy performance certificates including retrofit options proposed by experts for different building elements is performed. This provides an overview of the most commonly suggested renovation measures and their estimated investment costs and U-Values. Based on an energy model of the Swiss residential building stock (SwissRes), the theoretical energy savings are estimated. Together with the estimated investment costs, the levelized costs of each renovation measure is then determined in order to identify the most cost-effective measures. It is shown that a large-scale energy retrofit of the residential building stock would result in theoretical energy savings of up to 84% regarding the current simulated energy demand. Yet, existing technical and social constraints would lower the expected energy savings significantly. None of the selected measures is cost-effective, but under a more optimistic scenario, the cost-effective share reaches up to 85% of the total potential energy savings.

    While recent studies have shown an important gap between design and real energy use of multifamily buildings, this study analyses the energy performance gap for student housing. A very high energy performance (VHEP) student residency was analysed in detail, followed by a comparison of energy and water consumption with student residencies and other dwellings in Geneva. The analysis shows that for this VHEP residency the limit values according to the actual thermal regulations and MINERGIE label are exceeded: actual heat demand is 98 MJ/m2.a for heating (without double-flow ventilation) and 116 MJ/m2.a for hot water while the MINERGIE-index is 137 MJ/m2 (38 kWh/m2.a). Nevertheless, its thermal energy consumption (IDC=224 MJ/m2.a) is similar to other VHEP buildings, and half of Geneva's average values. The study points to factors which highly influence real performance of VHEP buildings and concludes that there is a huge optimisation potential during use phase of a building.
