    We present the architecture and design of the IANOS scheduling framework. The goal of the new Grid scheduling system is to provide a general job submission framework allowing optimal positioning and scheduling of HPCN applications. The scheduling algorithms used to calculate best-suited resources are based on an objective cost function that exploits information on the parameterization of applications and resources. This standard-based, interoperable scheduling framework comprises four general web services and three modules. The middleware is complemented with one client and one admin console. The implementation is based on proposed Grid and Web services standards (WSRF, WS-Agreement, JSDL, and GLUE). It is agnostic to a specific Grid middleware. The beta version of IANOS has been tested and integrated with UNICORE. The validation of IANOS is in progress by running different types of HPCN applications on a large-scale Grid testbed.

    We present the first calculations to follow the evolution of all stable isotopes (and their abundant radioactive progenitors) in a finely zoned stellar model computed from the onset of central hydrogen burning through explosion as a Type II supernova. The calculations were performed for a 15 solar mass Pop I star using the most recently available set of experimental and theoretical nuclear data, revised opacity tables, and taking into account mass loss due to stellar winds. We find the approximately solar production of proton-rich isotopes above a mass number of A=120 due to the gamma-process. We also find a weak s-process, which along with the gamma-process and explosive helium and carbon burning, produces nearly solar abundances of almost all nuclei from A=60 to 85. A few modifications of the abundances of heavy nuclei above mass 90 by the s-process are also noted and discussed.     Abstract Electricity markets in Europe become increasingly interconnected due to new grid connections and market coupling regulations. This paper examines the interdependencies between the Swiss electricity market and those of neighbouring countries. The Swiss market serves as a good example for a smaller electricity market which is increasingly affected by developments in the large neighbouring countries. To study these cross-border effects, especially those on Swiss electricity prices, we apply two different methodologies, an econometric and a Nash-Cournot equilibrium model. The analyses show that the Swiss electricity price correlates strongly with the German electricity price in the summer, but tends to follow the French electricity price in the winter. Another finding is that gas prices and the electricity load of neighbouring countries have a significant influence on prices. In particular, the load of France and Italy is driving up Swiss prices in the winter, while the German electricity demand and renewable energy generation have a larger influence on Swiss prices in the summer.

    AbstractWith the net zero energy balance for heating, domestic hot water, ventilation and auxiliary energy, the Swiss MINERGIE-A Standard is a major step towards standardized, economically feasible net zero energy buildings. Not only the zero energy balance but also the requirement for limited embodied energy is a new challenge for architects and designers. In the two years since the launching of the Standard and the writing of this paper, approx. 240 buildings have been certified or pre certified. The new standard is widely accepted and its challenges are appreciated in the building sector. A cross analysis shows that a wide range of different energy concepts and embodied energy strategies are possible in the scope of the Standard. The wide variety of options is one of the main findings of the rollout of this new zero-balanced standard.

    With the rapid development of the renewable energy source (RES), network congestion management is increasingly important for transmission system operators (TSOs). The limited transmission network capacity and traditional intervention methods result in high RES curtailment. The near-term, powerful, and flexible solutions, such as advanced flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), are considered to mitigate the risks. The mobile modular static synchronous series compensator (MSSSC) is one of the grid-enhancing solutions. The mobility of the solution allows it to offer fast deployment and seasonal redeployability with limited cost. The demonstration of the mobile MSSSC solution has shown significant benefits for RES curtailment reduction, network congestion alleviation, and facilitating the demand and RES connection. For unlocking the true value of the mobile solution, they should be optimally allocated in the transmission networks. This paper develops a security-constrained DCOPF-based optimisation tool to investigate the optimal allocation of the mobile MSSSC solution in transmission networks. A linear mobile MSSSC model with the operation dead-band was introduced that can be used in large-scale realistic power system planning. The proposed model was implemented in the IEEE 118-bus system to assess the performance of the mobile MSSSC.

    The flow field in a subsonic vaned radial diffuser of a single-stage centrifugal compressor is numerically investigated using a three-dimensional Navier–Stokes solver (TASCflow) and a two-dimensional analysis and inverse-design software package (MISES). The vane geometry is modified in the leading edge area (two-dimensional blade shaping) using MISES, without changing the diffuser throughflow characteristics. An analysis of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional effects of two redesigns on the flow in each of the diffuser subcomponents is performed in terms of static pressure recovery, total pressure loss production, and secondary flow reduction. The computed characteristic lines are compared with measurements, which confirm the improvement obtained by the leading edge redesign in terms of increased pressure rise and operating range.

    Abstract The consumption of buildings for the production of heat is expected to decrease in Switzerland in the coming years, in particular following policies encouraging the refurbishment of buildings. This will notably have an impact on the natural gas network, in parallel with the penetration of electric-driven heat pumps. Through a detailed optimization scheme, the evolution of the natural gas (NG) distribution network is studied over a future period of forty years, i.e. up to 2050, on the territory of a large Swiss canton. By way of installing large shares of co-generation units, it is shown that the NG network does not lose its meshed structure, while continuing to play a central role in the production of heat and the generation of part of the additional electricity demand associated with the concomitant penetration of heat pumps. As a novel result, the developed optimization framework allows a detailed, geographically precise view of both the evolution of the NG network, as well as of the optimal location of selected technologies. The adoption of energy networks convergence in urban zones therefore can lead to relevant synergies, avoiding over-investments, increasing system resilience and fostering the use of efficient technologies.

    This work studies the power density (PD) optimization in wind farms, and its sensitivity to the available area size. A novel genetic algorithm (PDGA) is introduced, which optimizes PD and the turbine layout, by self-adapting to the PD and to the solutions diversity. PDGA uses the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) as cost function, which in turn employs the EPFL analytical wake model to derive the power output. For the baseline area size, PDGA reduces 2.25% the original LCOE, 2.6 times more than optimizing with constant PD. PDGA-driven solutions provide 11% and 6% LCOE reductions against the default layout for the smallest (6.4 km2) and largest (386 km2) scaled wind farm areas, respectively. Specially relevant for the industry, PDGA solutions depict convex fronts for area vs. LCOE or vs. PD, which allows determining the required area or turbine number given a target LCOE. Unlike default layouts, optimized ones reveal a linear relationship between LCOE and PD. The mean turbine spacing tends to 8-9D for very large areas. The economics-optimized PDs are below the estimated PD available in the atmosphere. This work is limited to a simplified, offshore wind climatology, a specific wind turbine model, and the LCOE specifications used herein.

    AbstractThis article describes a control approach for large‐scale electricity networks, with the goal of efficiently coordinating distributed generators to balance unexpected load variations with respect to nominal forecasts. To mitigate the difficulties due to the size of the problem, the proposed methodology is divided in two steps. First, the network is partitioned into clusters, composed of several dispatchable and nondispatchable generators, storage systems, and loads. A clustering algorithm is designed with the aim of obtaining clusters with the following characteristics: (i) they must be compact, keeping the distance between generators and loads as small as possible; (ii) they must be able to internally balance load variations to the maximum possible extent. Once the network clustering has been completed, a two layer control system is designed. At the lower layer, a local model predictive controller is associated to each cluster for managing the available generation and storage elements to compensate local load variations. If the local sources are not sufficient to balance the cluster's load variations, a power request is sent to the supervisory layer, which optimally distributes additional resources available from the other clusters of the network. To enhance the scalability of the approach, the supervisor is implemented relying on a fully distributed optimization algorithm. The IEEE 118‐bus system is used to test the proposed design procedure in a nontrivial scenario.

    Modal shifts hold considerable potential to mitigate carbon emissions. Electric bikes (e-bikes) represent a promising energy- and carbon-efficient alternative to cars. However, as mobility behaviour is highly habitual, convincing people to switch from cars to e-bikes is challenging. One strategy to accomplish this is the disruption of existing habits - a key idea behind an annual e-bike promotion programme in Switzerland, in which car owners can try out an e-bike for free over a 2-week period in exchange for their car keys. By means of a longitudinal survey, we measured the long-term effects of this trial on mobility-related habitual associations. After one year, participants' habitual association with car use had weakened significantly. This finding was valid both for participants who bought an e-bike after the trial and those who did not. Our findings contrast the results of other studies who find that the effect of interventions to induce modal shifts wears off over time. We conclude that an e-bike trial has the potential to break mobility habits and motivate car owners to use more sustainable means of transport.

    We present the architecture and design of the IANOS scheduling framework. The goal of the new Grid scheduling system is to provide a general job submission framework allowing optimal positioning and scheduling of HPCN applications. The scheduling algorithms used to calculate best-suited resources are based on an objective cost function that exploits information on the parameterization of applications and resources. This standard-based, interoperable scheduling framework comprises four general web services and three modules. The middleware is complemented with one client and one admin console. The implementation is based on proposed Grid and Web services standards (WSRF, WS-Agreement, JSDL, and GLUE). It is agnostic to a specific Grid middleware. The beta version of IANOS has been tested and integrated with UNICORE. The validation of IANOS is in progress by running different types of HPCN applications on a large-scale Grid testbed.

    We present the first calculations to follow the evolution of all stable isotopes (and their abundant radioactive progenitors) in a finely zoned stellar model computed from the onset of central hydrogen burning through explosion as a Type II supernova. The calculations were performed for a 15 solar mass Pop I star using the most recently available set of experimental and theoretical nuclear data, revised opacity tables, and taking into account mass loss due to stellar winds. We find the approximately solar production of proton-rich isotopes above a mass number of A=120 due to the gamma-process. We also find a weak s-process, which along with the gamma-process and explosive helium and carbon burning, produces nearly solar abundances of almost all nuclei from A=60 to 85. A few modifications of the abundances of heavy nuclei above mass 90 by the s-process are also noted and discussed.     Abstract Electricity markets in Europe become increasingly interconnected due to new grid connections and market coupling regulations. This paper examines the interdependencies between the Swiss electricity market and those of neighbouring countries. The Swiss market serves as a good example for a smaller electricity market which is increasingly affected by developments in the large neighbouring countries. To study these cross-border effects, especially those on Swiss electricity prices, we apply two different methodologies, an econometric and a Nash-Cournot equilibrium model. The analyses show that the Swiss electricity price correlates strongly with the German electricity price in the summer, but tends to follow the French electricity price in the winter. Another finding is that gas prices and the electricity load of neighbouring countries have a significant influence on prices. In particular, the load of France and Italy is driving up Swiss prices in the winter, while the German electricity demand and renewable energy generation have a larger influence on Swiss prices in the summer.

    AbstractWith the net zero energy balance for heating, domestic hot water, ventilation and auxiliary energy, the Swiss MINERGIE-A Standard is a major step towards standardized, economically feasible net zero energy buildings. Not only the zero energy balance but also the requirement for limited embodied energy is a new challenge for architects and designers. In the two years since the launching of the Standard and the writing of this paper, approx. 240 buildings have been certified or pre certified. The new standard is widely accepted and its challenges are appreciated in the building sector. A cross analysis shows that a wide range of different energy concepts and embodied energy strategies are possible in the scope of the Standard. The wide variety of options is one of the main findings of the rollout of this new zero-balanced standard.

    With the rapid development of the renewable energy source (RES), network congestion management is increasingly important for transmission system operators (TSOs). The limited transmission network capacity and traditional intervention methods result in high RES curtailment. The near-term, powerful, and flexible solutions, such as advanced flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), are considered to mitigate the risks. The mobile modular static synchronous series compensator (MSSSC) is one of the grid-enhancing solutions. The mobility of the solution allows it to offer fast deployment and seasonal redeployability with limited cost. The demonstration of the mobile MSSSC solution has shown significant benefits for RES curtailment reduction, network congestion alleviation, and facilitating the demand and RES connection. For unlocking the true value of the mobile solution, they should be optimally allocated in the transmission networks. This paper develops a security-constrained DCOPF-based optimisation tool to investigate the optimal allocation of the mobile MSSSC solution in transmission networks. A linear mobile MSSSC model with the operation dead-band was introduced that can be used in large-scale realistic power system planning. The proposed model was implemented in the IEEE 118-bus system to assess the performance of the mobile MSSSC.

    The flow field in a subsonic vaned radial diffuser of a single-stage centrifugal compressor is numerically investigated using a three-dimensional Navier–Stokes solver (TASCflow) and a two-dimensional analysis and inverse-design software package (MISES). The vane geometry is modified in the leading edge area (two-dimensional blade shaping) using MISES, without changing the diffuser throughflow characteristics. An analysis of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional effects of two redesigns on the flow in each of the diffuser subcomponents is performed in terms of static pressure recovery, total pressure loss production, and secondary flow reduction. The computed characteristic lines are compared with measurements, which confirm the improvement obtained by the leading edge redesign in terms of increased pressure rise and operating range.

    Abstract The consumption of buildings for the production of heat is expected to decrease in Switzerland in the coming years, in particular following policies encouraging the refurbishment of buildings. This will notably have an impact on the natural gas network, in parallel with the penetration of electric-driven heat pumps. Through a detailed optimization scheme, the evolution of the natural gas (NG) distribution network is studied over a future period of forty years, i.e. up to 2050, on the territory of a large Swiss canton. By way of installing large shares of co-generation units, it is shown that the NG network does not lose its meshed structure, while continuing to play a central role in the production of heat and the generation of part of the additional electricity demand associated with the concomitant penetration of heat pumps. As a novel result, the developed optimization framework allows a detailed, geographically precise view of both the evolution of the NG network, as well as of the optimal location of selected technologies. The adoption of energy networks convergence in urban zones therefore can lead to relevant synergies, avoiding over-investments, increasing system resilience and fostering the use of efficient technologies.

    This work studies the power density (PD) optimization in wind farms, and its sensitivity to the available area size. A novel genetic algorithm (PDGA) is introduced, which optimizes PD and the turbine layout, by self-adapting to the PD and to the solutions diversity. PDGA uses the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) as cost function, which in turn employs the EPFL analytical wake model to derive the power output. For the baseline area size, PDGA reduces 2.25% the original LCOE, 2.6 times more than optimizing with constant PD. PDGA-driven solutions provide 11% and 6% LCOE reductions against the default layout for the smallest (6.4 km2) and largest (386 km2) scaled wind farm areas, respectively. Specially relevant for the industry, PDGA solutions depict convex fronts for area vs. LCOE or vs. PD, which allows determining the required area or turbine number given a target LCOE. Unlike default layouts, optimized ones reveal a linear relationship between LCOE and PD. The mean turbine spacing tends to 8-9D for very large areas. The economics-optimized PDs are below the estimated PD available in the atmosphere. This work is limited to a simplified, offshore wind climatology, a specific wind turbine model, and the LCOE specifications used herein.

    AbstractThis article describes a control approach for large‐scale electricity networks, with the goal of efficiently coordinating distributed generators to balance unexpected load variations with respect to nominal forecasts. To mitigate the difficulties due to the size of the problem, the proposed methodology is divided in two steps. First, the network is partitioned into clusters, composed of several dispatchable and nondispatchable generators, storage systems, and loads. A clustering algorithm is designed with the aim of obtaining clusters with the following characteristics: (i) they must be compact, keeping the distance between generators and loads as small as possible; (ii) they must be able to internally balance load variations to the maximum possible extent. Once the network clustering has been completed, a two layer control system is designed. At the lower layer, a local model predictive controller is associated to each cluster for managing the available generation and storage elements to compensate local load variations. If the local sources are not sufficient to balance the cluster's load variations, a power request is sent to the supervisory layer, which optimally distributes additional resources available from the other clusters of the network. To enhance the scalability of the approach, the supervisor is implemented relying on a fully distributed optimization algorithm. The IEEE 118‐bus system is used to test the proposed design procedure in a nontrivial scenario.

    Modal shifts hold considerable potential to mitigate carbon emissions. Electric bikes (e-bikes) represent a promising energy- and carbon-efficient alternative to cars. However, as mobility behaviour is highly habitual, convincing people to switch from cars to e-bikes is challenging. One strategy to accomplish this is the disruption of existing habits - a key idea behind an annual e-bike promotion programme in Switzerland, in which car owners can try out an e-bike for free over a 2-week period in exchange for their car keys. By means of a longitudinal survey, we measured the long-term effects of this trial on mobility-related habitual associations. After one year, participants' habitual association with car use had weakened significantly. This finding was valid both for participants who bought an e-bike after the trial and those who did not. Our findings contrast the results of other studies who find that the effect of interventions to induce modal shifts wears off over time. We conclude that an e-bike trial has the potential to break mobility habits and motivate car owners to use more sustainable means of transport.
