Kemal Koca in OpenAIRE© 2021 Elsevier LtdDespite extensive research to address the impact of environmental reforms under the Paris Climate Agreement, current literature has failed to provide sufficient insights into Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) countries. To this end, the current study attempts to address the impact of the economic complexity on environmental quality in the presence of renewable energy consumption, financial development, urbanization and energy innovation in RCEP countries from 1990 to 2019. Our empirical estimates confirm a significant association between environmental quality, economic complexity index, renewable energy consumption, financial development, urbanization and energy innovation in the short-run and long run. Based on extensive econometric analysis (CS-ARDL, AMG, PMG, FMOLS, and DOLS), we conclude that economic complexity, renewable energy, and energy innovation effectively mitigate environmental degradation. At the same time, financial development and urbanization have an adverse impact on the environment. These findings have extensive policy implications for policymakers and environmental stakeholders, who are aiming to achieve sustainable energy policy and economic growth to meet the environmental commitments under Paris Climate Agreement.

This study uses a data envelopment analysis (DEA) estimation method to evaluate the association between government expenditure on research and development (R&D), renewable energy deployment, and GEG in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) between 1990 and 2018. The estimates revealed an inconsistent GEG indicator in the analysis, suggesting the lesser impact disposition of public policy. In addition, the energy efficiency ratio of ECOWAS subregion is under 0.50, implying energy poverty in the sub-region. Many people do not have sufficient energy to heat and cool their homes to enough temperature and meet their basic needs and energy security concerns. This research discovered that a percentage growth increase in renewable energy deployment results in a 3.2% increase in growth in sustainable performance. Alongside an essential effect of one percentage point growth in R&D expenditure boosts economic system sustainable performance to 4.4% combined with a supported effect of one percent. This research reveals that the ECOWAS government expenditure on human resources and R&D of sustainable energy resources would result in a low carbon growth via an advanced technological production process; nevertheless, the impacts are varied in the various countries in ECOWAS. Anbang Wang in OpenAIREAbstract Based on the survey data onto rural households in China, taking biogas produced by crop residues as an example, this paper analyzed rural households’ perceived value of energy utilization of crop residues. Then, “interpersonal trust” and “institutional trust” variables are introduced to improve Zeithaml’s perceived value model to explore the key factors influencing rural households’ perceived value of energy utilization of crop residues. The results show that although the value of energy utilization of crop residues has been recognized by most rural households, there is still some room for improvement. We believe that strengthening the technical service level and creating an atmosphere of mutual trust in rural society will help to improve rural households’ perceived value of energy utilization of crop residues. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of the improved perceived value model as a powerful method for better prediction of human psychological perception, and our findings have significant policy implications given that the government can take measures to improve rural households’ perceived value to make energy utilization of crop residues more competitive, thus hastening its deployment.

Abstract Access to modern energy services is still low in developing countries and this lack of access affects in particular the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and sub-Saharan Africa. The large majority of population in the Logone Valley at the border between Chad and Cameroon still relies on wood fuel burnt in smoky and inefficient fireplaces for cooking. The promotion of wood saving stoves locally produced and appropriate for the traditional cooking practices has been implemented by an international cooperation project. Two stove models were compared to the traditional 3-stone fire and a gas stove by Water Boiling Tests and Controlled Cooking Tests. The results showed significant fuel savings thanks to the use of the improved stoves. Data collected during the tests, crossed with information about the local cooking habits, allowed to estimate the impact, in term of money savings, on each household adopting an improved stove. The Centrafricain improved stove resulted being the most performing model occurring in a 25% reduction of the expenditure per family for cooking purposes in a short-medium term. This study witnesses that the use of improved wood stove is likely to be a sustainable way to achieve an appropriate minimum level of energy access for cooking purposes for the poor people in the LDCs, in particular in rural areas.

Rural household energy consumption plays an essential role in the daily life of farmers, especially in developing regions. In this paper, we present a study of household energy consumption in terms of energy sources and energy end uses, and analysis of technical and economic issues associated with the use of biomass and renewable energy and the replacement of fossil fuels. Results show that energy from biomass represents the largest share of total energy supply, and that 41.15% of total energy is consumed for home heating and cooking. The average cost of household energy is 1259 RMB ($US193.6) and this expense is no longer subsidized by the government. It takes less than one year to make a solar stove profitable and less than two years to pay back the household cost of biogas digesters. An 8 m(3) digester can produce as much energy as 500-550 kg of standard coal or 940 kg of firewood, while a solar stove can generate 1.76 x 10(3) MJ heat each year. Moreover, it is estimated that in rural China the annual reduction of CO2 and SO2 emissions in 2020, due to the replacement of fossil fuel by biomass, will be 68.86 x 10(6) and 54.37 x 10(4) tons, respectively. Overall, the investigations and analyses have revealed that the structure of rural household energy consumption is undergoing a transformation from traditional low-efficiency biomass domination to integrated consumption of traditional and renewable energies. At the same time, China's ability to attract foreign investment in the world continued to increase. However, with the rapid development of the economy, China's energy crisis and environmental pollution have been continuously deepened, exposing increasingly serious problems in the energy consumption structure. As a critical mean to address the environmental problems and achieve sustainable development, the production and utilization of renewable energy resources is particularly critical. This paper aims to investigate the relationship amongst renewable energy consumption, foreign direct investment and gross domestic product in 31 Chinese provinces from 2000 to 2015. Specifically, the unit root test, cointegration test, vector error-correction model, impulse response function analysis, and Granger causality test are employed for the estimations. The empirical results indicate that there is a long-term and stable equilibrium relationship between gross domestic product per capita, foreign direct investment per capita, and renewable energy consumption per capita. Additionally, in the short term, foreign direct investment cannot significantly cause renewable energy consumption change; but in the long run, a modest slowdown in gross domestic product growth and targeted foreign direct investment will generate a significant boost on renewable energy in China.

Abstract Designing off-grid microgrids is a costly and risky activity, especially for newly electrified communities in developing countries. Private developers and researcher have been using several economic indicators to value the profitability of an investment, such as Net Present Value, Discounted Payback Period, Levelized Cost of Electricity; however, each index has its advantages and specific limitations. Selecting a single objective may lead the developer to misestimate the profitability of a project, because a single index cannot accommodate the variety of requirements of the business process. Acknowledging this, this study proposes a wide analysis for highlighting the effects of different indicators onto the optimal design of an off-grid hybrid energy system. A multi-objective approach that optimizes together different economic indicators is proposed, based on the results of a preliminary analysis on single-objective formulations. A sensitivity analysis with respect to the electricity price, the load curtailment cost and the dispatching strategy is also performed. A numerical case study is proposed for a possible off-grid microgrid in Soroti, Uganda, which well represents a hard environment for business development. Results suggest that the proposed multi-objective approach provides intermediate configurations that are a good compromise between multiple objectives, thus satisfying the difficult environment developers are enduring.

Hayot Berk Saydaliev in OpenAIRESustainable goals are achieved by utilizing private firms' investment in renewable energy sources. Globally, the demand for alternative sources of Renewable Energy (RE) and green finance (GF) has prompted an increase in research on these topics. This research applies a novel technique panel cointegration and causality model to evaluate the causes of green finance development in China between 1990 and 2020. This study adds information on the relationship between green finance and financial inclusion in the form of private firms' investments. The findings show that green finance and financial inclusion (FI) are beneficial to development globally and more granular. For every 1% growth in RE sources, there will be a 0.522% rise in trademark filings and a 0.1243% rise in private sector investment filings. The trademark and patent are promoted by 0.062% when financial inclusion is improved by 0.031%. Investment, commerce, and human progress have a calming effect on the connection discussed above. A variety of robustness tests supports our model results. This study's policy recommendations include decentralizing the energy industry to allow for more private sector participation; financial incentives for enterprises to use RE. It is clear from these findings that our study contributes significantly to the field of empirical research and also gives crucial policy recommendations. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract Policy makers are increasingly supporting the development of renewable electricity power generation projects not only for environmental concerns but also for economic reasons. Several studies have indeed documented that renewable electricity can be a viable economic alternative to electricity power generation based on non-renewable sources. Yet, most of the existing studies are based on microeconomic cost-benefit analyses which disregard the existence of large macroeconomic effects. This paper develops a novel method to evaluate the macroeconomic impact of renewable electricity power generation projects. Economic theory is used to identify the potential effects of these projects on the vector of macroeconomic variables affected by their implementation. A structural vector autoregression model is thus estimated using a novel dataset of quarterly macroeconomic and energy data for Portugal. The estimated impulse-response functions suggest that renewable electricity power generation projects have positive effects on real economic growth in the medium run, through both the investment and the operations phases. Import substitution is the key driver of the overall positive impact.

However, alongside such robust economic growth performances, the environmental qualities in these countries have simultaneously aggravated to raise deep concerns among the stakeholders. Hence, this study is designed to empirically examine the environmental effects of nuclear and renewable energy consumption, economic complexity, and economic growth in the context of the G7 countries for the period between 1995 and 2016. To ensure novelty, this study considers carbon footprints along with carbon dioxide emissions to measure environmental quality in the context of the G7 nations. The results reveal that although nuclear energy consumption is effective in mitigating carbon dioxide emissions and carbon footprints in the long run, renewable energy consumption degrades the environment in the G7 countries. Besides, the results also suggest that the G7 countries can transform their production processes in an environmentally friendly manner provided they can undergo a clean transition in energy use. Finally, economic growth is evidenced to be detrimental for the environment since higher economic growth levels are seen to boost both carbon dioxide emission and carbon footprint levels. Therefore, in line with the findings, this study recommends the G7 countries to significantly enhance their nuclear and renewable energy consumption levels, increase their economic complexity indices, and integrate environmental welfare policies within their economic growth strategies.
