While we have previously derived and published the stochastic approximation based method for coupling the Monte Carlo criticality and thermal–hydraulic calculations, its possible implementation has not been described in a step-by-step manner. As the simple description of the coupling scheme was repeatedly requested from us, we have decided to make it available via this note.

Artículos en revistas This paper describes the long term transmission expansion planning model CHOPIN. In CHOPIN, the network expansion is formulated as the static optimization problem of minimizing the global annual cost of electricity production, which is obtained as the sum of the annualized network investment cost, the operation cost and the reliability cost. The solution method takes advantage of the natural decomposition between the investment and operation submodels. The investment submodel is solved by a new heuristic procedure that in practice has invariably yielded the optimal plan. At the operation level CHOPIN optimizes over a multiplicity of scenarios which are characterized by the demand, the hydraulicity and the availability of components. The network is represented by any one out of four options: DC load flow (DCLF), transportation model and two hybrid models. Any of these models may consider the ohmic losses. The model is very efficient computationally; this fact was verified on rest examples, as well as on the actual transmission expansion planning of the Spanish system. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Artículos en revistas This paper presents a continuation and optimization based algorithm to detect power flow unsolvability. In addition, the algorithm obtains the power flow solution, if it exists, no matter how ill-conditioned the power system is. The proposed algorithm is based on the parameterization of the distance from the starting point to the real power flow to be solved, using a convergence margin. The majority of climate models forecast a rise in temperatures and less rainfall, which have been observed in recent decades. These changes will affect several vegetation properties, especially phenological dynamics and traits, by increasing drought intensity and recurrence. In this climate change context, the present study aims to assess the evolution of vegetation state and its relation with the climate dynamics in the Mediterranean forest region of northeast Tunisia using Land Surface Phenology (LSP) metrics and the vegetation index (NDVI) analysis from 2000 to 2017. To conduct this work, we used precipitation and temperature data from the two closest weather stations and 16-day NDVI composite images from the MODIS satellite source, with 250-m spatial resolution. Three phenological metrics— start of season (SOS), end of season (EOS), and length of season (LOS) — were obtained and compared for different vegetation types. The LSP variation in response to climatic metrics was also analyzed. The results showed that the LSP in our study area changed significantly during the 2000–2017 period, which includes an average 7.8 days delay in the SOS, an average advance in the EOS by 5 days, and LOS shortened by an average 12.8 days. Autumn (Pr_9) and spring (Pr_3 and P3_4) precipitations, as well as maximum temperature (Tx9+10), represent the best climate parameters to explain the changes in LSP. In this study we examine the determination accuracy of both the mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) and the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) within the scope of numerical weather prediction (NWP), and global (GCM) and regional (RCM) climate model simulations. First, Tmrt is determined and the so-called UTCI-Fiala model is then used for the calculation of UTCI. Taking into account the uncertainties of NWP model (among others the HIgh Resolution Limited Area Model HIRLAM) output (temperature, downwelling short-wave and long-wave radiation) stated in the literature, we simulate and discuss the uncertainties of Tmrt and UTCI at three stations in different climatic regions of Europe. The results show that highest negative (positive) differences to reference cases (under assumed clear-sky conditions) of up to -21°C (9°C) for Tmrt and up to -6°C (3.5°C) for UTCI occur in summer (winter) due to cloudiness. In a second step, the uncertainties of RCM simulations are analyzed: three RCMs, namely ALADIN (Aire Limitée Adaptation dynamique Développement InterNational), RegCM (REGional Climate Model) and REMO (REgional MOdel) are nested into GCMs and used for the prediction of temperature and radiation fluxes in order to estimate Tmrt and UTCI. The inter-comparison of RCM output for the three selected locations shows that biases between 0.0 and ±17.7°C (between 0.0 and ±13.3°C) for Tmrt (UTCI), and RMSE between ±0.5 and ±17.8°C (between ±0.8 and ±13.4°C) for Tmrt (UTCI) may be expected. In general the study shows that uncertainties of UTCI, due to uncertainties arising from calculations of radiation fluxes (based on NWP models) required for the prediction of Tmrt, are well below ±2°C for clear-sky cases. However, significant higher uncertainties in UTCI of up to ±6°C are found, especially when prediction of cloudiness is wrong.

AbstractBackgroundN2O is a powerful greenhouse gas emitted in nitric acid plants, and emission control technologies are required.ResultsA 0.25%Rh/50%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2/γ‐Al2O3 catalyst has been prepared and tested for N2O decomposition in a real nitric acid plant gas stream. The catalyst is active enough to achieve 100% N2O removal, maintaining a constant catalytic activity after 40 h operation without deactivating. Characterization of the fresh and used catalyst, using different techniques, revealed no changes during the N2O decomposition experiments: (i) XRD and Raman spectroscopy show the fluorite structure of the Ce–Pr mixed oxide before and after the catalytic tests, (ii) the crystal size of the Ce–Pr mixed oxide particles and the BET surface area of the catalyst is maintained, evidencing no sintering of ceria particles, (iii) H2‐TPR indicates that the reducibility of the catalyst is similar before and after the catalytic tests, revealing chemical stability, and (iv) TEM and XPS analysis indicated the high stability of the rhodium particle size and oxidation state.ConclusionAn active and stable catalyst with formulation 0.25%Rh/50%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2/γ‐Al2O3 has been prepared and successfully tested for N2O decomposition in a real nitric acid plant gas stream. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry

Over the last years, graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4, CN), polymers based on the heptazine-group, have been widely applied as photocatalysts for H2 evolution. The poor charge separation efficiency of CN is considered the major drawback. Here, we investigated the effect of coupling CN with different types of carbon nanotubes on the charge transfer properties and the photocatalytic H2 evolution. We used carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of different wall number (single (SWCNTs), double (DWCNTs) and multi-walled (MWCNTs) CNTs) for the development of full-organic CN based composite photocatalysts. Photoactivity was drastically affected by the content but more importantly by the nature of the CNTs. The SWCNTs functionalized CN composites were the most active presenting approximately 2-5 times higher H2 evolution than the corresponding DWCNTs and MWCNTs functionalized CN under both solar and pure visible light irradiation. Photoactivity was primarily controlled by the improved electronic properties linked with the abundance and stability of photogenerated charges as evidenced by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Transient absorption spectroscopy verified the transfer of reactive electrons from CN to CNTs. CNTs functioned as electron acceptors improving charge separation. The data suggest that charge transfer is inversely proportional to the wall number of the CNTs and that photoactivity is directly controlled by the size at the nanoscale of the CNTs used. In the CNTs/CN nanocomposites, photogenerated electrons are transferred more efficiently from CN when SWCNTs are used, providing more available electrons for H2 production.

Artículos en revistas This paper presents a model to address generation companies’ medium-term strategic analysis (including yearly forecast and decision-making processes) based on a conjectured-price-response market equilibrium representation that assumes a single node system. This equilibrium is formulated by simultaneous consideration that any of the variables that affect price formation—such as hydro inflows, demand, or fuel prices—are stochastic, by representing them through a scenario tree. It is shown that this equilibrium formulation can be solved by means of an equivalent optimization problem, which in most common cases becomes a quadratic programming problem. This schema enables taking advantage of the properties of classical medium-term operation optimization models, including clear model structure, reasonable computing solving time, and easy obtaining of dual-information. An annual study case (inspired by the Spanish electricity market) is presented, including two alternative demand levels in summer and three hydro-inflow situations, both in spring and autumn. In addition to the advantages previously mentioned, this approach provides richer results than a deterministic one, allowing companies to fit their policies more accurately to reality, thereby avoiding, for example, excessively optimistic or pessimistic decisions proposed by the deterministic analysis. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

En el presente trabajo nos vamos a centrar en la importancia que tiene el salsolinol en nuestro organismo tras el consumo de alcohol, así pues, el objetivo es aceptar o refutar la siguiente hipótesis: Un producto de la condensación de acetaldehído y dopamina es el responsable del efecto reforzante del etanol. Es decir, el salsolinol, como producto derivado de la condensación no enzimática de acetaldehído y dopamina, es el responsable del reforzamiento positivo. Aparece tras el consumo de etanol, y gracias a la metabolización de este. Todavía no se sabe el mecanismo de acción del salsolinol, pero sabemos que juega un papel importante a la hora de crear dependencia, llegando a pensar que el alcohol actúa como una prodroga. El salsolinol es una molécula reforzante, más potente que el acetaldehído y el etanol. The alcohol is the drug most accepted and consumed in the world, which can cause a high level of dependence, to reason, principally, of the reinforcing effect that produces in your brain. In the present work, we us go to focus in the importance that salsolinol has in our organism after consume alcohol, this way so, the objective is to agree or to refuse the following hypothesis: A product of the condensation of acetaldehyde and dopamine is the responsible of the effect positive reinforcement of the ethanol. The salsolinol, as product derived from the non-enzymatically condenses of acetaldehyde and dopamine, is the responsible of the positive reinforcement. It appears after consume ethanol, and thanks to metabolizing of this one. The mechanism of action of the salsolinol is not yet known, but we know that it plays an important role in creating dependency, coming to think that alcohol acts as a prodrug. The salsolinol more reforcing molecule that acetaldehyde and ethanol.

Artículos en revistas This paper describes the long term transmission expansion planning model CHOPIN. In CHOPIN, the network expansion is formulated as the static optimization problem of minimizing the global annual cost of electricity production, which is obtained as the sum of the annualized network investment cost, the operation cost and the reliability cost. The solution method takes advantage of the natural decomposition between the investment and operation submodels. The investment submodel is solved by a new heuristic procedure that in practice has invariably yielded the optimal plan. At the operation level CHOPIN optimizes over a multiplicity of scenarios which are characterized by the demand, the hydraulicity and the availability of components. The network is represented by any one out of four options: DC load flow (DCLF), transportation model and two hybrid models. Any of these models may consider the ohmic losses. The model is very efficient computationally; this fact was verified on rest examples, as well as on the actual transmission expansion planning of the Spanish system. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

In addition, the algorithm obtains the power flow solution, if it exists, no matter how ill-conditioned the power system is. The majority of climate models forecast a rise in temperatures and less rainfall, which have been observed in recent decades. These changes will affect several vegetation properties, especially phenological dynamics and traits, by increasing drought intensity and recurrence. In this climate change context, the present study aims to assess the evolution of vegetation state and its relation with the climate dynamics in the Mediterranean forest region of northeast Tunisia using Land Surface Phenology (LSP) metrics and the vegetation index (NDVI) analysis from 2000 to 2017. To conduct this work, we used precipitation and temperature data from the two closest weather stations and 16-day NDVI composite images from the MODIS satellite source, with 250-m spatial resolution. Three phenological metrics— start of season (SOS), end of season (EOS), and length of season (LOS) — were obtained and compared for different vegetation types. The LSP variation in response to climatic metrics was also analyzed. The results showed that the LSP in our study area changed significantly during the 2000–2017 period, which includes an average 7.8 days delay in the SOS, an average advance in the EOS by 5 days, and LOS shortened by an average 12.8 days. Autumn (Pr_9) and spring (Pr_3 and P3_4) precipitations, as well as maximum temperature (Tx9+10), represent the best climate parameters to explain the changes in LSP. In this study we examine the determination accuracy of both the mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) and the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) within the scope of numerical weather prediction (NWP), and global (GCM) and regional (RCM) climate model simulations. First, Tmrt is determined and the so-called UTCI-Fiala model is then used for the calculation of UTCI. Taking into account the uncertainties of NWP model (among others the HIgh Resolution Limited Area Model HIRLAM) output (temperature, downwelling short-wave and long-wave radiation) stated in the literature, we simulate and discuss the uncertainties of Tmrt and UTCI at three stations in different climatic regions of Europe. The results show that highest negative (positive) differences to reference cases (under assumed clear-sky conditions) of up to -21°C (9°C) for Tmrt and up to -6°C (3.5°C) for UTCI occur in summer (winter) due to cloudiness. In a second step, the uncertainties of RCM simulations are analyzed: three RCMs, namely ALADIN (Aire Limitée Adaptation dynamique Développement InterNational), RegCM (REGional Climate Model) and REMO (REgional MOdel) are nested into GCMs and used for the prediction of temperature and radiation fluxes in order to estimate Tmrt and UTCI. The inter-comparison of RCM output for the three selected locations shows that biases between 0.0 and ±17.7°C (between 0.0 and ±13.3°C) for Tmrt (UTCI), and RMSE between ±0.5 and ±17.8°C (between ±0.8 and ±13.4°C) for Tmrt (UTCI) may be expected. In general the study shows that uncertainties of UTCI, due to uncertainties arising from calculations of radiation fluxes (based on NWP models) required for the prediction of Tmrt, are well below ±2°C for clear-sky cases. However, significant higher uncertainties in UTCI of up to ±6°C are found, especially when prediction of cloudiness is wrong.

AbstractBackgroundN2O is a powerful greenhouse gas emitted in nitric acid plants, and emission control technologies are required.ResultsA 0.25%Rh/50%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2/γ‐Al2O3 catalyst has been prepared and tested for N2O decomposition in a real nitric acid plant gas stream. The catalyst is active enough to achieve 100% N2O removal, maintaining a constant catalytic activity after 40 h operation without deactivating. Characterization of the fresh and used catalyst, using different techniques, revealed no changes during the N2O decomposition experiments: (i) XRD and Raman spectroscopy show the fluorite structure of the Ce–Pr mixed oxide before and after the catalytic tests, (ii) the crystal size of the Ce–Pr mixed oxide particles and the BET surface area of the catalyst is maintained, evidencing no sintering of ceria particles, (iii) H2‐TPR indicates that the reducibility of the catalyst is similar before and after the catalytic tests, revealing chemical stability, and (iv) TEM and XPS analysis indicated the high stability of the rhodium particle size and oxidation state.ConclusionAn active and stable catalyst with formulation 0.25%Rh/50%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2/γ‐Al2O3 has been prepared and successfully tested for N2O decomposition in a real nitric acid plant gas stream. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry

Over the last years, graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4, CN), polymers based on the heptazine-group, have been widely applied as photocatalysts for H2 evolution. The poor charge separation efficiency of CN is considered the major drawback. Here, we investigated the effect of coupling CN with different types of carbon nanotubes on the charge transfer properties and the photocatalytic H2 evolution. We used carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of different wall number (single (SWCNTs), double (DWCNTs) and multi-walled (MWCNTs) CNTs) for the development of full-organic CN based composite photocatalysts. Photoactivity was drastically affected by the content but more importantly by the nature of the CNTs. The SWCNTs functionalized CN composites were the most active presenting approximately 2-5 times higher H2 evolution than the corresponding DWCNTs and MWCNTs functionalized CN under both solar and pure visible light irradiation. Photoactivity was primarily controlled by the improved electronic properties linked with the abundance and stability of photogenerated charges as evidenced by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Transient absorption spectroscopy verified the transfer of reactive electrons from CN to CNTs. CNTs functioned as electron acceptors improving charge separation. The data suggest that charge transfer is inversely proportional to the wall number of the CNTs and that photoactivity is directly controlled by the size at the nanoscale of the CNTs used. In the CNTs/CN nanocomposites, photogenerated electrons are transferred more efficiently from CN when SWCNTs are used, providing more available electrons for H2 production.

Artículos en revistas This paper presents a model to address generation companies’ medium-term strategic analysis (including yearly forecast and decision-making processes) based on a conjectured-price-response market equilibrium representation that assumes a single node system. This equilibrium is formulated by simultaneous consideration that any of the variables that affect price formation—such as hydro inflows, demand, or fuel prices—are stochastic, by representing them through a scenario tree. It is shown that this equilibrium formulation can be solved by means of an equivalent optimization problem, which in most common cases becomes a quadratic programming problem. This schema enables taking advantage of the properties of classical medium-term operation optimization models, including clear model structure, reasonable computing solving time, and easy obtaining of dual-information. An annual study case (inspired by the Spanish electricity market) is presented, including two alternative demand levels in summer and three hydro-inflow situations, both in spring and autumn. In addition to the advantages previously mentioned, this approach provides richer results than a deterministic one, allowing companies to fit their policies more accurately to reality, thereby avoiding, for example, excessively optimistic or pessimistic decisions proposed by the deterministic analysis. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

En el presente trabajo nos vamos a centrar en la importancia que tiene el salsolinol en nuestro organismo tras el consumo de alcohol, así pues, el objetivo es aceptar o refutar la siguiente hipótesis: Un producto de la condensación de acetaldehído y dopamina es el responsable del efecto reforzante del etanol. Es decir, el salsolinol, como producto derivado de la condensación no enzimática de acetaldehído y dopamina, es el responsable del reforzamiento positivo. Aparece tras el consumo de etanol, y gracias a la metabolización de este. Todavía no se sabe el mecanismo de acción del salsolinol, pero sabemos que juega un papel importante a la hora de crear dependencia, llegando a pensar que el alcohol actúa como una prodroga. El salsolinol es una molécula reforzante, más potente que el acetaldehído y el etanol. The alcohol is the drug most accepted and consumed in the world, which can cause a high level of dependence, to reason, principally, of the reinforcing effect that produces in your brain. In the present work, we us go to focus in the importance that salsolinol has in our organism after consume alcohol, this way so, the objective is to agree or to refuse the following hypothesis: A product of the condensation of acetaldehyde and dopamine is the responsible of the effect positive reinforcement of the ethanol. The salsolinol, as product derived from the non-enzymatically condenses of acetaldehyde and dopamine, is the responsible of the positive reinforcement. It appears after consume ethanol, and thanks to metabolizing of this one. The mechanism of action of the salsolinol is not yet known, but we know that it plays an important role in creating dependency, coming to think that alcohol acts as a prodrug. The salsolinol more reforcing molecule that acetaldehyde and ethanol.
