description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2012 FrancePublisher:OFCE Authors: Dion, Stéphane; Laurent, Eloi; From Rio to Rio: A global carbon price signal to escape the great climate inconsistency Two decades after the 1992 Rio Conference,we must admit to collective failure in combating human induced climate change. We cannot escape serious climate disruption if we keep going down that road. We must change direction, and we must move quickly. To this end, we call in this paper for a fine tuning of the international negotiations on climate. We propose refocusing these international efforts on negotiating a global carbon price signal, harmonized in principle but flexible in practice, instead of doggedly spending the next few years attempting to convince countries to accept stricter national targets for quantitative reduction of their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Available estimates of the induced land use changes conclude that this policy is inefficient to reduce emissions of GreenHouse Gas. We show that the crop yield evolutions in these estimates are significantly lower than the observed and expected evolutions. This difference is directly related to biased calibration choice of behavioral parameters. We show using the GTAP-BIO framework that a consistent calibration of these parameters leads to a strong reduction (by around 80% in the long run) of the land use changes and induced emissions.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Other literature type 2009 FrancePublisher:Ecole Centrale de Nantes Authors: Saulnier, Jean Baptiste; This work focuses on the refinement of sea-states spectral characterisation in the frame of the development of wave energy converters (WECs). Until now, this characterisation has been limited to the consideration of basic global parameters such as the significant wave height and mean wave period. The present work namely underlines - thanks to simplified numerical models - that such a description is not sufficient to account for the performance of WECs, for they still exhibit a large variability in terms of mean production while wave energy and period are fixed. It is therefore needed to refine this description by introducing new wave characteristics, such as the wave groupiness, which is itself related to the sea-state's spectral bandwidth. The classical - spectral - approaches, allowing a statistical analysis of wave groups along with other works in the literature, permit to draw a set of relevant spectral parameters. The sensitivity of simplified offshore WEC models (linear in the frequency domain) to these parameters is then observed. The question of deterministic mean power estimation - namely in the case of non-linear models - is also raised, for it is also related somehow to the bandwidth of the wave field. A sea-state is actually made of a superimposition of various wave systems (as swells and wind-sea). It is then possible to refine even more its description, namely through the multi-system approach. The latter enables indeed to track in time and space the wave systems independently of each other. An algorithm for the automatic spatiotemporal analysis is proposed and illustrated to this end. Lastly, the influence of such description refinements (wave groupiness and multi-system approach) is observed at several locations (Portugal, North Sea, California) by considering various WEC models (linear axi-symmetric heaving devices, 3D SEAREV with non-linear hydrodynamics): in all cases, it is shown that both extended descriptions allow for a better characterisation of the mean WEC performance at both short and long term.

Conclusions.

Aquaculture is one of the main supply of protein in feed for mankind, notably in Asia. It increases and had exceeded the level of production of world fisheries, which is decreasing. According to sites and rearing methods, aquaculture contributes to add value but also in some cases to impact negatively the aquatic ecosystems. In the coastal area, a rich and productive zone, but also a place of conflicts, this activity presents a high potential for development if it takes into account the rules of sustainability. The conditions of this sustainability may be cleared with appropriate methods of foresight analysis applied for each development project. The analysis of the professional experience of D. Lacroix for 33 years in aquaculture is structured in three steps. Firstly, the work is to check the scientific value of the research conducted under his responsibility in various contexts and for different responsibilities. This study refers to the requirements of a PhD. In the second part of the work, the results of few major projects (French West Indies, French Guyana….) are analysed with the support of the theory of translation (Callon et al) which allows to build a network of actors and to project it into the context. This way of study includes a special attention to the aspects of time planning, legitimacy and acceptability. Finally, the author examines how this knowledge gained from experience could help building a method for foresight analysis aiming at a shorter planning, a better timing and less means for future projects. To achieve this goal the author integrates the vision of the economist R. Passet which structures any project in an ecosystemic framework, including criteria of sustainability. The mix of these two approaches (Callon & Passet) entails in a new tool for foresight analysis, called Aster, which originality is to offer the possibility to test various scenarios and related consequences to help decision -makers. This new method of foresight analysis, is then tested on the well known case study of the development of prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii in French Guyana. The test shows to be successful as it delivers precise and arguable recommendations about research and development for all stakeholders.

Il est basé sur de nouvelles stratégies Thermoelectric materials have attracted much attention in recent years, owing to their reversible properties of converting thermal energy into electricity.Even though, the inorganic materials, mainly based on bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) records the best yields, they are toxics and remains expensive. Conductive polymers constitute a promising alternative materials for energy production, their thermoelectric performance undergoes an improvement processes.Hence, the objective of the present thematic, aims at the first level, the optimization of chemical and electrochemical syntheses experimental parameters of two polymers, polypyrrole and polythiophene, with respect to their thermoelectric efficiency, represented by ZT factor, using a methodology called response surface (MSR) following appropriate experimental designs. At the second stage, five experimental approaches were followed to improve the thermoelectric properties of these polymers, namely: the doping of polymers (approach 1), the development of composites with a binary composition (approach 2), the development of composites with a ternary composition (approach 3), the study of the copolymerization reaction (approach 4) and the reduction of thermal conductivity (approach 5). These experimental approaches have focused in their global frame on studying the influence of organic dopants, the addition of polymers such as PEDOT and PEDOT: PSS, the addition of inorganic fillers and the incorporation of graphitic particles, principally carbon nanotubes and graphene in its different treated and untreated forms ( neat Gr), oxidized (GO) and functionalized (FrGO) by a diazonium salt. All the necessary steps related to the development of these materials, ranging from synthesis, structural and morphological characterizations until the thermoelectric performance evaluation were studied. The ZT values of the obtained materials were improved to magnitudes reaching 6 to 2.3 x 105 times greater than that of polymers taken alone.Aiming from us to develop new strategies for the recapture of solar energy and to simulate the behavior of photovoltaic cells, a thermoelectric module providing stable and precise measurements of the potential generated at different temperatures has been developed.

This work focuses on the development and predication of the thermo-physical properties of composite materials with and without phase change. Firstly, we studied the evolution of the thermal properties of three-phase samples based on SEBS, PEBD as a function of the mass fraction of hexadecane, and secondly, the influence of the mass fraction of the mixture (SEBS / PEBD). Simultaneous determination of the thermal properties (heat capacity, diffusivity, effective thermal conductivity) of these materials was carried out by two methods using the hot disk device and a new measurement bench developed at the CERTES Laboratory (UPEC). The study of the kinetics storage/release of thermal energy of these samples was carried out as a function of the mass fraction of hexadecane. Samples based on expanded graphite, SEBS, LDPE and hexadecane were tailored and analyzed. The heat transfer intensification as a function of the mass fraction of expanded graphite has been studied. Finally, the study of the energy efficiency of each composite, using different measurement techniques, provides a valuable basis for targeting applications but also for feeding calculation software.

This modeling presents the control part of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The objective of the model is to represent the voltage control chain of the PEMFC. This model is based on an energetic macroscopic representation (EMR) of the fuel cell and then leads to a so-called maximum control structure (MCS). The SCM is a step-by-step inversion of the REM (control structure based on an inversion model). The control design process is based on an explicit problem definition. For example, control inputs, system objectives, or constraints are highlighted to organize the control. In addition, the MSC shows where sensors are needed and where controllers are required. Unfortunately, the SCM is only a theoretical control structure. Therefore, a realistic structure requires some simplifications, which leads to a so-called practical control structure.
