    Abstract In the current study, a new solar-driven triple cycle is proposed to allow power generation during low insolation periods. This triple cycle integrates the solar gas-turbine top cycle, the steam Rankine cycle, and the Kalina bottom cycle. During the top cycle of the proposed system, compressed air was heated to 1000 °C or higher in the solar tower receiver. The heated compressed air was then used to drive the gas turbine to generate electricity. A Rankine cycle with a back-pressure steam turbine was utilized to recover waste heat from the gas turbine, thereby generating electricity through the steam turbine. The bottom cycle is the Kalina cycle, which comprises another back-pressure turbine and utilizes ammonia–water mixture as working fluid. After driving the steam Rankine cycle, the flue gas from the gas turbine sequentially heats the ammonia–water mixture to produce power. A new operational strategy was presented to generate electricity during low insolation period without the backup of fossil fuel. In middle insolation periods, the air is heated by the solar field and then directly drives the steam Rankine cycle, bypassing the gas turbine. In low insolation periods, the heated air directly drive the Kalina cycle, bypassing the Brayton cycle and the steam Rankine cycle. The off-design performance was investigated and the irreversibility was disclosed with the aid of the energy-utilization diagram method. Thus, the proposed system can utilize low insolation to generate electricity. This study provides a possibility to improve the solar–electric efficiency.

    With the integration of a high penetration of wind power into distribution system, the ability to cope with the voltage fluctuation issue arising from the intensified uncertainty should be improved. Energy storage system (ESS) with effective control strategies keeps a key role in smoothing the voltage fluctuation caused by the uncertainty of wind turbine generators (WTGs). Considering the constraints of state of charge (SOC), charge-discharge efficiency and continuous operation of ESS, this paper proposes a novel approach to determine the minimum capacity of ESS to satisfy the voltage fluctuation limit based on unbalanced three-phase interval power flow. An unbalanced forward-backward sweep interval power flow considering the constraints of ESS and the voltage fluctuation limit is proposed. The interval model of uncertain WTG output is established on basis of wind speed fluctuation curve. The interval model of the practical ESS output is obtained on basis of the present SOC, nominal capacity and comprehensive efficiency. The output voltages of power flow can directly demonstrate the voltage fluctuation rate due to their interval forms. Therefore, a feedback mechanism is established between the output voltage fluctuation rate and the input ESS practical power, which is used to determine the minimum capacity of ESS to satisfy the fluctuation limit. A modified IEEE 33-bus system with high penetration of WTGs is implemented to test the proposed method. Results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

    Abstract A CFD modelling study has been undertaken to examine the co-firing of pulverised coal and biomass with particular regard to the burnout of the larger diameter biomass particles. Computations were based on a research combustion facility that replicates an industrial coal-fired power station. Three percent, by mass, of pinewood was blended with a bituminous UK coal, and the effects of the wood particle size and shape on the burnout of the combined wood and coal char were investigated. The effect of varying the devolatilisation and char combustion rate constants for the biomass component in the blend was also investigated. It was concluded that the combustion of small (200 μm) wood particles was rapid but the rate of combustion of larger particles was dependent on their composition, size, and shape.

    In order to improve the accuracy of the battery state of charge (SOC) estimation, in this paper we take a lithium-ion battery as an example to study the adaptive Kalman filter based SOC estimation algorithm. Firstly, the second-order battery system model is introduced. Meanwhile, the temperature and charge rate are introduced into the model. Then, the temperature and the charge rate are adopted to estimate the battery SOC, with the help of the parameters of an adaptive Kalman filter based estimation algorithm model. Afterwards, it is verified by the numerical simulation that in the ideal case, the accuracy of SOC estimation can be enhanced by adding two elements, namely, the temperature and charge rate. Finally, the actual road conditions are simulated with ADVISOR, and the simulation results show that the proposed method improves the accuracy of battery SOC estimation under actual road conditions. Thus, its application scope in engineering is greatly expanded.

    The Severn Estuary has the world's second largest tide range and a barrage across the estuary, located just seawards of Cardiff in Wales and Weston in the South West England, has been proposed for over half a century, with the objective of extracting large amounts of tidal energy. A Severn Barrage, as previously proposed by the Severn Tidal Power Group (STPG), would be the largest renewable energy project for tidal power generation in the world, if built as proposed, and would generate approximately 5% of the UK's electricity needs. However, concerns have been raised over the environmental impacts of such a barrage, including potential increase in flood risk, loss of intertidal habitats etc. In addressing the challenges of maximizing the energy output and minimizing the environmental impacts of such a barrage, this research study has focused on using a Continental Shelf model, based on the modified Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) with a barrage operation module (EFDC_B), to investigate both the far and near field hydrodynamic impacts of a barrage for different operating scenarios. Three scenarios have been considered to simulate the Severn Barrage, operating via two-way generation and using different combinations of turbines and sluices. The first scenario consisted of 216 turbines and 166 sluices installed along the barrage; the second consisted of 382 turbines with no sluices; and the third consisted of 764 turbines and no sluices. The specification of the sluice gates and turbines are the same for all scenarios. The model results indicate that the third scenario has the best mitigating effects for the far-field and near-field flood risks caused by a barrage and produces the most similar results of minimum water depth and maximum velocity distributions to those obtained from simulating the natural conditions of the estuary, i.e. the current conditions. The results also show that the flow patterns around the barrage are closest to those for the existing natural conditions with minimal slight changes in the estuary. Thus, the results clearly indicate that the environmental impacts of a Severn Barrage can be minimized if the barrage is operated for two-way generation and under the third scenario. Although it appears that the energy output for the third scenario is less than that obtained for the other two scenarios, if very low head (VLH) turbines are used, then the third scenario could generate more energy as more turbines could be cited along the barrage structure. Therefore, the study shows that a Severn Barrage, operating in two-way generation and with 764 turbines (ideally VLH turbines), would be the best option to meet the needs of maximizing the energy output, but having a minimal impact on environmental changes in the estuary and far-field.

    Biomass plays an important role in the world primary energy supplies, currently providing ∼14% of the world's primary energy needs and being the fourth largest contributor following coal, oil and natural gas. Over the past decade, domestic biomass heating has received more governmental and public supports than ever before in many developed countries, such as the UK. Although biomass combustion releases some combustion pollutants, biomass is renewable and produces little net CO 2 emissions to the atmosphere. Owing to the low sulphur and low nitrogen contents of many biomass materials, substituting biomass for fossil fuels, particularly coal, can reduce SO x and NO x emissions. This study investigated flue gas emissions, particularly carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, of a domestic biomass boiler under various operating conditions. The biomass boiler used in this study satisfies the current EU regulation (EN 303-05) on emissions of domestic biomass boilers. Emissions of the boiler had been measured not only under normal combustion conditions, but also under 'idle' combustion conditions when the boiler was not in but was ready for full operation. The experimental results are analysed and presented in this paper. Copyright The Author 2010. Published by Oxford University Press. All rights reserved. Studying the influence of the demand response and dynamic characteristics of the battery energy storage on the configuration and optimal operation of battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Wind-Photovoltaic (PV)-Energy Storage (ES) hybrid microgrid. A demand response model that is based on electricity price elasticity is established based on the time-of-use price. Take the capital-operating cost and direct economic benefit of the BESS and the loss of abandoned photovoltaic and wind power as the optimization objective, an optimal configuration method that considers the dynamic characteristics of the BESS and the maximum absorption of photovoltaic and wind power is proposed while using particle swarm optimization to solve. The results show that the configuration results considering the demand side response of the microgrid BESS can obtain better economy and reduce the storage capacity requirement, and the result shows that the efficiency of BESS relates to the load of the system, the distributed generation (DG) characteristics, and the dynamic characteristics of BESS. Meanwhile, the capacity and power of the energy storage configuration increase as the DG permeability increases due to the reverse load characteristic of the wind power.

    Abstract Numerical simulations with detailed homogeneous (gas phase) and heterogeneous (catalytic) chemistries of premixed hydrogen–oxygen mixture were performed inside a rectangular micro-combustor. The effects of catalytic walls on the homogeneous combustion were investigated via varying catalyst segment layouts and sizes. The interactions between heterogeneous and homogeneous reactions were discussed. It was shown that the heterogeneous reactions become weak when the catalyst disposition is shifted toward the outlet along the streamwise. The homogeneous combustion also becomes obviously weakened downstream behind the catalyst segmentation, except the exit. Moreover, with increasing catalyst segment size, the hydrogen conversion ratio increases and the mean outlet temperature reduces. The competition of the fresh fuel between the heterogeneous and homogeneous reactions result in the inhibition of heterogeneous reactions on homogeneous combustion. In summary, the heterogeneous reactions can obviously improve the combustion efficiency in a micro catalytic combustor. As expected, the effects of catalytic walls were more pronounced for the micro combustor systems.

    Points out that sustainability as such does not provide a clearcut guide to policy. First one has to decide what is to be sustained. If this is agreed, it must be in an operational from. However, difficulties may still emerge since opinions may differ about how to achieve. This is illustrated by differences in the views of economists about how sustainable development is to be achieved. Orthodox economists stress the importance of the accumulation of man-made capital to achieve this end whereas neo-Malthusians stress the importance of conserving natural resource and environmental capital. Both take an anthropocentric point of view. For political reasons the neo-Malthusian has had little support but it may eventually turn out to be correct. Economics is concerned with reducing economic scarcity and economists have traditionally suggested four main ways of doing this of which economic growth is one. However, neo-Malthusian economists believe that this may not be a sustainable strategy – it may result in future poverty. It should be noted that economic systems are embedded in social and natural systems and depend on these. Economic sustainability depends on the sustainability of these other systems. So from this point of view, it is just one of several bottom lines. Values must be considered in relation to sustainability. Economics is completely anthropocentric in its approach. Therefore, economic approaches to conservation and sustainability can be at odds with the values of deep ecologists or those willing to accord rights to other sentient beings or ecosystems independent of human wishes, or those who want to make use of value judgments other than those based on the measuring rod of money. Consequently economics evaluation is sometimes ineffective in resolving social conflict, including conflict about what should be sustained. As a rule economics alone should not be the final arbiter of social decisions. It is a part (often an important part) of the social evaluation process but not the bottom line, or just one of many lines.

  • Authors: Shouxiang Wang; Kai Wang; Liangzhong Yao;

    Authors: Tisdell, Clement A.; Tisdell, Clement A.;

    Authors: Tisdell, Clement A.; Tisdell, Clement A.;
