description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2015 FrancePublisher:CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Authors: Humulane A; Filimone C; Dimande, B.; Fabião A;handle: 10568/65987
Mozambique is considered one of the countries that will suffer significant negative effects of climate change, in particular droughts, floods and cyclones. The district of Chicualacuala, due to its geographical location, in an area with semi-arid characteristics, will suffer the consequences of cyclical droughts and floods, high temperatures and desertification. The population will be negatively affected by these phenomena, as their survival is dependent on farming and the exploitation of natural resources. On top of these factors, there is weak development of infrastructure and social services in the district. The main effects of climate change include: the reduction of agricultural productivity, loss of crops, decrease in the availability of pasture, reduction in the availability of water, higher incidences of disease and death of livestock, and land degradation. This could, therefore, lead to the reduction of household income, increased food and nutritional insecurity, and the increase in the number of cases of diseases such as malaria, cholera and diarrhea in this population.

The aim of this article was to analyse in the contemporary period in what way the public politics, national and international ones, together with the agri-business sugar-energy industry and local actors borrowed the speech of sustainability. We also intended to understand how the measures from this new paradigm concluded to justify the expansion of the sugar-energy industry sector. The methodology is based on the bibliography research, in the farming data surveys as well as in the analysis of developing programs and finally in the camping research. The work highlight that the assumption of the sustainable development speech became strategy to the maintenance and expansion of the sugar-energy sector, showing its action in favor of the environment. However, it was seen that the actors admit contradictions existing between the principles of conservation of the environment and the reality of the actors from the sustainability speech El sector sucroenergético, responsable por la producción de caña de azúcar y su transformación en azúcar, alcohol y/o energía eléctrica, ha encontrado desde inicios del siglo XXI una nueva forma de expansión basada en los términos actuales del desarrollo sostenible.

; The present study was carried out in stand of Black wattle 8 years old, in the southeastern mountain range, in Minas do Leão - RS County. The objective of this work was to quantify the total biomass of the stand and its distribution in each component of the tree biomass. After evaluation of dendrometric characteristics, 21 trees were selected and cut for estimation of biomass in the components: leaves, live and dead branches, bark wood, stem wood and roots. To estimate the different components of the biomass, the coefficients of the equation ln y = b0 + b1 * ln d were determinated. At eight years old, a Black wattle can concentrate more than 60% of its biomass in the wood. The biomass below ground under these conditions can reach approximately 12% of total biomass.

; This study aimed at estimating the biomass in a 5.5-year-Platanus x acerifolia stand, in Dom Feliciano county, Rio Grande do Sul. The inventory in the experimental area was done in five plots (20 m x 30 m each one). Trees were grouped in eight diameter classes, and 3 trees per class were cut. After cutting the trees, a cubing was done and the biomass of each component (leaf, fruit, branch, bark, wood and root) was determined and sampled. The biomasses estimative from each component were done through regression equations adjustment that correlated dendrometric characteristics with biomass volumes from the respective components of the trees. The total biomass was 45,28 Mg h-1, distributed in: wood 21,07 Mg ha-1; branch 11,72 Mg ha-1; root 8,43 Mg ha-1; bark 2,01 Mg ha-1; leaf 1,89 Mg ha-1 and fruit 0,16 Mg ha-1. The accumulated litter was 12,80 Mg ha-1.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Doctoral thesis 2013 FrancePublisher:HAL CCSD Authors: Peikriszwili Tartaruga, Marcus; The aim of this thesis was to use allometric models to analyze the relationship that running economy(ECO) and mechanical efficiency (Ef) have on the performance of middle- and long-distance runners.Based on the results of three original studies, we concluded that allometric scaling can improve therelationship between ECO and performance in recreational middle- and long-distance runners, mainlydue to morphofunctional aspects. Similarly, the mechanical works, especially the external mechanicalwork, may be considered to be predictive of running performance and a specific allometric exponentcan improve these predictions. The results also showed that Ef is an important predictor of theperformance of long-distance runners. However, when the specific allometric exponents were applied, there was no improvement in the prediction of this performance. The results also showed that it isimportant to consider the contribution of anaerobic energy expenditure when calculating Ef, becauseotherwise the results may be overestimated, as already reported in other studies. In general, when theobjective is to predict the performance of middle- or long-distance runners through metabolic ormechanical powers, it is useful to adopt a specific allometric exponent of the group investigated.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2015 FrancePublisher:CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Authors: Humulane A; Filimone C; Dimande, B.; Fabião A;handle: 10568/65987
