Super-hot rock geothermal is an emerging source of renewable and carbon-free energy. This paper is the first attempt to explore fluid and heat flow dynamics in the reservoir-wellbore coupled system, to assess the power generation performance of a super-hot (>450 °C) enhanced geothermal system (EGS). We developed a high-performance code and built a 3-D wellbore-reservoir coupled model based on data from a recently completed deep-drilling project at Larderello, Italy. The general pattern of the super-hot EGS is characterized by a significant temperature plummet (>60 °C), after which the production fluid evolves from steam to a two-phase mixture till the end of the operation period. Reservoir pressure emerges as a key parameter to determine the temperature of the two-phase mixture. By realistically capturing phase transitions driven by coupled thermo-hydraulic processes during operations, our numerical model predicts a lower power generation efficiency compared to previous attempts based on ultra-simplified models. Although finalized at assessing the thermodynamic viability of a specific system, this modeling approach provides general information on fundamental thermo-hydraulic processes in the Earth crust that might be applied for the design of similar EGS projects elsewhere.

The Urban Intelligence (UI) paradigm conceived by CNR consists of an ecosystem of digital technologies joined within a Digital Twin (DT) of the city aimed at improving the city governance towards goals addressed also by the UN Agenda 2030, such as urban environment, sustainability and resilience, wellbeing and quality of life, local development, and social inclusion. In particular, UI provides a set of candidate policies in complex scenarios, and supports policy makers and stakeholders in designing shared, evidence-based, and integrated solutions. UI is being applied for the first time to two Italian cities, Matera and Catania, paving the way for a deeper scientific framing of the paradigm, as well as for the technological development and testing of the core UI ecosystem in real-life situations. The paper introduces the UI key-concepts and components, illustrates the ongoing experimentations in these pilot cities related to the development of two DTs on parts of the urban areas, and presents some initial results.

Macrophytes represent interesting matrices for oil extraction with biodiesel production purposes, particularly in eutrophic coastal lagoons. This short note reported results on bio-oil extraction efficiency in two different species of macrophytes in a Mediterranean lagoon (Lesina lagoon, south-eastern Italy), by testing effects of different factors (year, season, species of macrophytes) on oil production and oil quality. Extracted total oils values ranged from 0.65 % (Chara spp.) to 2.35 % (Chaetomorpha linum) and a significant difference (p < 0. 01) between the two species was reported in relation to the variability of diene production with seasons. Compared to the available literature, higher oil extraction efficiencies are reported in this paper for the species C. linum, mainly due to the pressure optimization before extractions.

Global warming, water scarcity and limited land resources are the most challenging problems facing agriculture to ensure food security for the expected 9 billion people in 2050. To solve these problems, the classical optimal planting pattern, based on crop suitability evaluation method, is often adopted to reallocate water and land resources. However, whether or not the classical optimal planting pattern, which only considers environmental conditions in crop suitability evaluation, is beneficial to the regional carbon neutrality goal and saves water and energy resources has rarely been explored. Here, China's major arid food production area, the middle reaches of Heihe River Basin, is chosen as the demonstration to explore this issue. The classical optimal planting pattern obtained by crop suitability evaluation is compared with current planting in terms of planting distribution, carbon sequestration, energy consumption and water productivity from 2002 to 2016. Interestingly, the results indicate that optimal planting would reduce the regional net carbon sequestration capacity by up to 13.09% and increase regional carbon emissions by up to 22%, which is harmful to reach the commitment of carbon neutrality goal in China. Contrary, optimal crop planting pattern can increase regional water productivity by 1.74–32.59% and economic benefits by 1.52–30.55% while having little impact on energy consumption and water consumption. Considering the contradictions effects of classical optimal planting pattern on the food-energy-water-carbon nexus, we strongly recommend redefining the “optimal” in crop planting management by taking impacts on carbon into consideration to alleviate the crisis of global warming.

Wood growth is key to understanding the feedback of forest ecosystems to the ongoing climate warming. An increase in spatial synchrony (i.e., coincident changes in distant populations) of spring phenology is one of the most prominent climate responses of forest trees. However, whether temperature variability contributes to an increase in the spatial synchrony of spring phenology and its underlying mechanisms remains largely unknown. Here, we analyzed an extensive dataset of xylem phenology observations of 20 conifer species from 75 sites over the Northern Hemisphere. Along the gradient of increase in temperature variability in the 75 sites, we observed a convergence in the onset of cell enlargement roughly toward the 5th of June, with a convergence in the onset of cell wall thickening toward the summer solstice. The increase in rainfall since the 5th of June is favorable for cell division and expansion, and as the most hours of sunlight are received around the summer solstice, it allows the optimization of carbon assimilation for cell wall thickening. Hence, the convergences can be considered as the result of matching xylem phenological activities to favorable conditions in regions with high temperature variability. Yet, forest trees relying on such consistent seasonal cues for xylem growth could constrain their ability to respond to climate warming, with consequences for the potential growing season length and, ultimately, forest productivity and survival in the future.

This study aimed at evaluating the effects of a binge-like-drinking on the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex (VOR) using the video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) and the functional Head Impulse Test (fHIT).Eleven healthy men (age range 32-35 years) with moderate drinking habits and no history of vestibular dysfunction were enrolled. A preliminary assessment of breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) to check for zero alcohol value and a pre-intake evaluation of VOR using the vHIT and the fHIT were carried on. Then, the subjects were asked to take drinks with different alcohol content (8-40% ethanol by volume) according to their choice, consuming at least 5 standard drinks. Volunteers stopped drinking after 3 h. After a further 30 min, post-intake BrAC measurements and VOR analysis were repeated.After alcohol intake, vHIT recorded an overall significant reduction of VOR gain (0.82 ± 0.07 on both sides) although the outcomes were below the normal range only in the four subjects with the highest blood alcohol levels. The post-intake fHIT outcomes were substandard in 9 participants, with a significant deterioration in performance (% of exact answers = 84.54 ± 11.05% on the left, 83.18 ± 14.53 on the right).Binge drinking severely affects VOR; fHIT seems more sensitive than vHIT in the assessment of VOR function for complex vestibular lesions, such as those determined by ethanol, suggesting that fHIT could support vHIT in vestibular dysfunction assessment.

Abstract Offshore wind energy is expected to provide a significant contribution to the achievement of the European Renewable Energy targets. One of the main technological issues affecting floating offshore wind turbines concerns generated power fluctuations and structural fatigue caused by sea-wave/platform interactions. This paper presents a fully-coupled aero/hydro/servo-mechanic model for response and control of floating offshore wind turbines in waves, suitable for preliminary design. The wind-turbine is described by a multibody model consisting of rigid bodies (blades and tower) connected by hinges equipped with springs and dampers (for realistic low-frequency simulation). The aerodynamic loads are evaluated through a sectional aerodynamic approach coupled with a wake inflow model. A spar buoy floating structure supports the wind turbine. The hydrodynamic forces are evaluated through a linear frequency-domain potential solver, with the free surface deformation effects included through a reduced-order, state-space model. An optimal controller is identified and applied for rejection of annoying fluctuations of extracted power and structural loads. The developed comprehensive model has been successfully applied to a floating version of the NREL 5 MW wind turbine for stability analysis, as well as for the analysis of uncontrolled and controlled responses to regular and irregular short-crested sea waves. The proposed controller, based on the combined use of blade pitch and generator torque as control variables and the application of an observer for non-measurable aerodynamic and hydrodynamic states estimation, has been demonstrated to be effective in a wide frequency range for alleviation of both generated power fluctuations and vibratory loads.

Iestyn Woolway; Shilong Piao; Erik Jeppesen;Climate change could seriously threaten global lake ecosystems by warming lake surface water and increasing the occurrence of lake heatwaves. Yet, there are great uncertainties in quantifying lake temperature changes globally due to a lack of accurate large-scale model simulations. Here, we integrated satellite observations and a numerical model to improve lake temperature modeling and explore the multifaceted characteristics of trends in surface temperatures and lake heatwave occurrence in Chinese lakes from 1980 to 2100. Our model-data integration approach revealed that the lake surface waters have warmed at a rate of 0.11 °C 10a-1 during the period 1980–2021, being only half of the pure model-based estimate. Moreover, our analysis suggested that an asymmetric seasonal warming rate has led to a reduced temperature seasonality in eastern plain lakes but an amplified one in alpine lakes. The durations of lake heatwaves have also increased at a rate of 7.7 d 10a-1. Under the high-greenhouse-gas-emission scenario, lake surface temperature and lake heatwave duration were projected to increase by 2.2 °C and 197 d at the end of the 21st century, respectively. Such drastic changes would worsen the environmental conditions of lakes subjected to high and increasing anthropogenic pressures, posing great threats to aquatic biodiversity and human health.

Visser;Cyanobacteria can form dense and sometimes toxic blooms in freshwater and marine environments, which threaten ecosystem functioning and degrade water quality for recreation, drinking water, fisheries and human health. Here, we review evidence indicating that cyanobacterial blooms are increasing in frequency, magnitude and duration globally. We highlight species traits and environmental conditions that enable cyanobacteria to thrive and explain why eutrophication and climate change catalyse the global expansion of cyanobacterial blooms. Finally, we discuss management strategies, including nutrient load reductions, changes in hydrodynamics and chemical and biological controls, that can help to prevent or mitigate the proliferation of cyanobacterial blooms.

Super-hot rock geothermal is an emerging source of renewable and carbon-free energy. This paper is the first attempt to explore fluid and heat flow dynamics in the reservoir-wellbore coupled system, to assess the power generation performance of a super-hot (>450 °C) enhanced geothermal system (EGS). We developed a high-performance code and built a 3-D wellbore-reservoir coupled model based on data from a recently completed deep-drilling project at Larderello, Italy. The general pattern of the super-hot EGS is characterized by a significant temperature plummet (>60 °C), after which the production fluid evolves from steam to a two-phase mixture till the end of the operation period. Reservoir pressure emerges as a key parameter to determine the temperature of the two-phase mixture. By realistically capturing phase transitions driven by coupled thermo-hydraulic processes during operations, our numerical model predicts a lower power generation efficiency compared to previous attempts based on ultra-simplified models. Although finalized at assessing the thermodynamic viability of a specific system, this modeling approach provides general information on fundamental thermo-hydraulic processes in the Earth crust that might be applied for the design of similar EGS projects elsewhere.

The Urban Intelligence (UI) paradigm conceived by CNR consists of an ecosystem of digital technologies joined within a Digital Twin (DT) of the city aimed at improving the city governance towards goals addressed also by the UN Agenda 2030, such as urban environment, sustainability and resilience, wellbeing and quality of life, local development, and social inclusion. In particular, UI provides a set of candidate policies in complex scenarios, and supports policy makers and stakeholders in designing shared, evidence-based, and integrated solutions. UI is being applied for the first time to two Italian cities, Matera and Catania, paving the way for a deeper scientific framing of the paradigm, as well as for the technological development and testing of the core UI ecosystem in real-life situations. The paper introduces the UI key-concepts and components, illustrates the ongoing experimentations in these pilot cities related to the development of two DTs on parts of the urban areas, and presents some initial results.

Macrophytes represent interesting matrices for oil extraction with biodiesel production purposes, particularly in eutrophic coastal lagoons. This short note reported results on bio-oil extraction efficiency in two different species of macrophytes in a Mediterranean lagoon (Lesina lagoon, south-eastern Italy), by testing effects of different factors (year, season, species of macrophytes) on oil production and oil quality. Extracted total oils values ranged from 0.65 % (Chara spp.) to 2.35 % (Chaetomorpha linum) and a significant difference (p < 0. 01) between the two species was reported in relation to the variability of diene production with seasons. Compared to the available literature, higher oil extraction efficiencies are reported in this paper for the species C. linum, mainly due to the pressure optimization before extractions.

Global warming, water scarcity and limited land resources are the most challenging problems facing agriculture to ensure food security for the expected 9 billion people in 2050. To solve these problems, the classical optimal planting pattern, based on crop suitability evaluation method, is often adopted to reallocate water and land resources. However, whether or not the classical optimal planting pattern, which only considers environmental conditions in crop suitability evaluation, is beneficial to the regional carbon neutrality goal and saves water and energy resources has rarely been explored. Here, China's major arid food production area, the middle reaches of Heihe River Basin, is chosen as the demonstration to explore this issue. The classical optimal planting pattern obtained by crop suitability evaluation is compared with current planting in terms of planting distribution, carbon sequestration, energy consumption and water productivity from 2002 to 2016. Interestingly, the results indicate that optimal planting would reduce the regional net carbon sequestration capacity by up to 13.09% and increase regional carbon emissions by up to 22%, which is harmful to reach the commitment of carbon neutrality goal in China. Contrary, optimal crop planting pattern can increase regional water productivity by 1.74–32.59% and economic benefits by 1.52–30.55% while having little impact on energy consumption and water consumption. Considering the contradictions effects of classical optimal planting pattern on the food-energy-water-carbon nexus, we strongly recommend redefining the “optimal” in crop planting management by taking impacts on carbon into consideration to alleviate the crisis of global warming.

Wood growth is key to understanding the feedback of forest ecosystems to the ongoing climate warming. An increase in spatial synchrony (i.e., coincident changes in distant populations) of spring phenology is one of the most prominent climate responses of forest trees. However, whether temperature variability contributes to an increase in the spatial synchrony of spring phenology and its underlying mechanisms remains largely unknown. Here, we analyzed an extensive dataset of xylem phenology observations of 20 conifer species from 75 sites over the Northern Hemisphere. Along the gradient of increase in temperature variability in the 75 sites, we observed a convergence in the onset of cell enlargement roughly toward the 5th of June, with a convergence in the onset of cell wall thickening toward the summer solstice. The increase in rainfall since the 5th of June is favorable for cell division and expansion, and as the most hours of sunlight are received around the summer solstice, it allows the optimization of carbon assimilation for cell wall thickening. Hence, the convergences can be considered as the result of matching xylem phenological activities to favorable conditions in regions with high temperature variability. Yet, forest trees relying on such consistent seasonal cues for xylem growth could constrain their ability to respond to climate warming, with consequences for the potential growing season length and, ultimately, forest productivity and survival in the future.

This study aimed at evaluating the effects of a binge-like-drinking on the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex (VOR) using the video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) and the functional Head Impulse Test (fHIT).Eleven healthy men (age range 32-35 years) with moderate drinking habits and no history of vestibular dysfunction were enrolled. A preliminary assessment of breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) to check for zero alcohol value and a pre-intake evaluation of VOR using the vHIT and the fHIT were carried on. Then, the subjects were asked to take drinks with different alcohol content (8-40% ethanol by volume) according to their choice, consuming at least 5 standard drinks. Volunteers stopped drinking after 3 h. After a further 30 min, post-intake BrAC measurements and VOR analysis were repeated.After alcohol intake, vHIT recorded an overall significant reduction of VOR gain (0.82 ± 0.07 on both sides) although the outcomes were below the normal range only in the four subjects with the highest blood alcohol levels. The post-intake fHIT outcomes were substandard in 9 participants, with a significant deterioration in performance (% of exact answers = 84.54 ± 11.05% on the left, 83.18 ± 14.53 on the right).Binge drinking severely affects VOR; fHIT seems more sensitive than vHIT in the assessment of VOR function for complex vestibular lesions, such as those determined by ethanol, suggesting that fHIT could support vHIT in vestibular dysfunction assessment.

Abstract Offshore wind energy is expected to provide a significant contribution to the achievement of the European Renewable Energy targets. One of the main technological issues affecting floating offshore wind turbines concerns generated power fluctuations and structural fatigue caused by sea-wave/platform interactions. This paper presents a fully-coupled aero/hydro/servo-mechanic model for response and control of floating offshore wind turbines in waves, suitable for preliminary design. The wind-turbine is described by a multibody model consisting of rigid bodies (blades and tower) connected by hinges equipped with springs and dampers (for realistic low-frequency simulation). The aerodynamic loads are evaluated through a sectional aerodynamic approach coupled with a wake inflow model. A spar buoy floating structure supports the wind turbine. The hydrodynamic forces are evaluated through a linear frequency-domain potential solver, with the free surface deformation effects included through a reduced-order, state-space model. An optimal controller is identified and applied for rejection of annoying fluctuations of extracted power and structural loads. The developed comprehensive model has been successfully applied to a floating version of the NREL 5 MW wind turbine for stability analysis, as well as for the analysis of uncontrolled and controlled responses to regular and irregular short-crested sea waves. The proposed controller, based on the combined use of blade pitch and generator torque as control variables and the application of an observer for non-measurable aerodynamic and hydrodynamic states estimation, has been demonstrated to be effective in a wide frequency range for alleviation of both generated power fluctuations and vibratory loads.

Iestyn Woolway; Shilong Piao; Erik Jeppesen;Climate change could seriously threaten global lake ecosystems by warming lake surface water and increasing the occurrence of lake heatwaves. Yet, there are great uncertainties in quantifying lake temperature changes globally due to a lack of accurate large-scale model simulations. Here, we integrated satellite observations and a numerical model to improve lake temperature modeling and explore the multifaceted characteristics of trends in surface temperatures and lake heatwave occurrence in Chinese lakes from 1980 to 2100. Our model-data integration approach revealed that the lake surface waters have warmed at a rate of 0.11 °C 10a-1 during the period 1980–2021, being only half of the pure model-based estimate. Moreover, our analysis suggested that an asymmetric seasonal warming rate has led to a reduced temperature seasonality in eastern plain lakes but an amplified one in alpine lakes. The durations of lake heatwaves have also increased at a rate of 7.7 d 10a-1. Under the high-greenhouse-gas-emission scenario, lake surface temperature and lake heatwave duration were projected to increase by 2.2 °C and 197 d at the end of the 21st century, respectively. Such drastic changes would worsen the environmental conditions of lakes subjected to high and increasing anthropogenic pressures, posing great threats to aquatic biodiversity and human health.

Visser;Cyanobacteria can form dense and sometimes toxic blooms in freshwater and marine environments, which threaten ecosystem functioning and degrade water quality for recreation, drinking water, fisheries and human health. Here, we review evidence indicating that cyanobacterial blooms are increasing in frequency, magnitude and duration globally. We highlight species traits and environmental conditions that enable cyanobacteria to thrive and explain why eutrophication and climate change catalyse the global expansion of cyanobacterial blooms. Finally, we discuss management strategies, including nutrient load reductions, changes in hydrodynamics and chemical and biological controls, that can help to prevent or mitigate the proliferation of cyanobacterial blooms.
