But regarding diverging backgrounds of value orientations, interests, ego involvements, and the inherent fuzziness of the notion of Sustainable Development it is to be expected that stakeholders have their own ideas of Sustainability or at least weight the aspects of sustainability differently. This empirical study provides a social psychological model of this 'subjective theories' about Sustainable Development. One important conceptual distinction had been implemented in the design of the study: Sustainability as an abstract concept, more reflecting a general world view on the one hand side, and Sustainability as a more concrete evaluation of a given situation (i. e. new technology or policy) in an environmental context on the other. 99 members of environmental groups, natur conversation groups, and members of wind energy associations were asked with a self rating questionnaire about their attitudes towards sustainability, value orientations and general political beliefs. As an example for the concrete aspect of Sustainability subjects were asked to what extent they regard the technology of offshore wind energy as sustainable (i.e. concerning its potential harm for species) and about the perceived risks and chances accompanied with this new form of energy supply. Three most important results can be stated: 1. Five dimensions of general Sustainability were identified using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis: belief in technological progress, democratic paticipation, ecocentrism, individual lifestyle/consumption, and attitudes towards the western, growth oriented economic system. 2. Measured by correlational and path analytical methods almost no evidence was found for any relation between the abstract view of Sustainability and the perceived sustainability of offshore wind energy. The abstract 'theory' about Sustainability could be explained by the abstract value orientation of the subjects whilst the estimated Sustainability of this form of environmental technology was related to its perceived risks and chances.3. Analysis of variance yielded that also the group memership had an impact for the estimated Sustainability of offshore wind energy, its risks and chances. As hypothesized subjects belonging to wind energy associations estimated the risks for species lowest and the chances for a positive effect for CO2 reduction (and therefore for the protection of the climate) highest. The nature conservation groups estimated risks and chances conversely. The judgement of the environmental conversation groups was found between those poles. However almost no difference could be found in the abstract notion of Sustainable Development, general value orientation, and political beliefs between the subgroups of the sample. The empirical findings of the study were summarized by proposing a social psychological model of subjective perception of Sustainability. The theoretical impact of the results and the limitations of the study were discussed at the end.

This paper investigates the values and principles of cooperatives and relates them to the triple bottom line of sustainability: economic, social and ecological. Sustainable work is conceptualized in a similar way understanding the three dimensions as interdependent aspects of using resources responsibly. Furthermore, the mainly locally operating cooperatives are discussed as a legal form of a company. Their guiding principles such as solidarity, democratic participation and autonomy are introduced and two distinguishing features recognized: the identity principle and the purpose of self-help. Following the three dimensions of sustainability, the article discusses theoretical arguments and presents empirical data showing how these two principles lead to a realization of sustainable work. The paper also draws parallels between cooperatives' principles and managing the 'commons'. It concludes calling for representative surveys on cooperatives in order to learn more about how to apply cooperatives' principles in other companies and beyond local realities. AIS-Studien

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Doctoral thesis 2023Embargo end date: 10 Feb 2023 GermanyPublisher:RWTH Aachen University Authors: Bastian, Daniel; This work contains investigations on the effect of powdered activated carbon (PAC) on the effluent quality and operational safety of a membrane bioreactor (MBR), as well as its effects on sewage sludge quality. The tests to detect these effects were carried out in one of the four large-scale MBRs operated in parallel at an 80.000 p.e. WWTP sewage treatment plant in Kaarst. Comparative investigations without PACs were carried out in two other MBRs. The focus was on different dosing strategies in which the PAC was dosed into the activated sludge tank in proportion to the volume flow, continuously over time and in daily pulse dosings. The cleaning performance of the PAC-MBR was improved compared to the reference. The elimination of carbon compounds and especially the adsorption of trace organic substances was significantly increased at the low PAC dosing rates of 7±5 to 10±7 gPAC/m³ influent. The mean and maximum values for nitrogen compounds in the effluent were also lower in the PAC-MBR than in the MBR without PAC, while no significant change was observed for phosphorus. At similar PAC doses, only a slight difference between the dosing strategies was discernible. Overall, the continuous dosing showed the best organic carbon and trace organic substances elimination. Daily pulse dosing showed the highest system availability for PAC dosing due to the simple dosing technology.A better filterability of the activated sludge with PAC addition could be determined and was linked to a lower content of fouling-promoting substances. In addition, a reduction in the air requirement for nitrification aeration of the PAC-MBR was observed. An improvement in the thickening of the excess sludge via sieve belt thickener was observed. The improved dewaterability of the digested sludge could be demonstrated in the laboratory in semi-technical and in the large-scale tests. During a time of PAC dosing in all four MBRs of the WWTP, a clear improvement for the dewatering efficiency in the large-scale centrifuge was achieved at the tested PAC concentrations. The cost of PAC dosing into the biological stage is not determined by the investment costs, but largely by the operating costs from PAC dosing. Considering possible savings for the wastewater levy, aeration energy and sludge disposal costs, the additional costs for PAC dosing are reduced by approx. 50 to 80 %, depending on the scenario. The investigations carried out show a high technological potential. Membrane bioreactor technology has already been state of the art for 20 years and it is complemented and completed to a considerable extent by the dosing of PAC. For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2013 GermanyPublisher:Universität Bremen Authors: Müller, Anna-Lisa;This paper argues that the sustainability paradigm is currently used to transform industrial port cities into creative sustainable cities (Müller, 2013). Based on empirical data from the city of Dublin, I show that the sustainability paradigm is combined with the creative city paradigm to revitalize inner-city quarters. This urban planning strategy includes a focus on the creative class (Florida, 2004) and aims at integrating the old in the new, both in architectural and social terms. With this, it tries to be an integrative urban revitalization strategy. In the course of the 20th century, the Irish society developed from an industrial to a postindustrial, knowledge-based society (Bell, 1973; Drucker, 1993). New occupations emerged, making new forms of working spaces and modes of transport necessary, and a growing population now asks for a new kind of living spaces. Additionally, inner-city quarters have become increasingly popular with people working in knowledge-intensive industries. Consequently, city planners have initiated a revitalization process in these quarters, and they used two urban planning paradigms â creative cities (Florida, 2005) and sustainability â as guidelines for urban regeneration. This strategy aims to transform the whole city, but the single districts have to be the object of investigation when empirically approaching the changes of the built environment. Here we see that a threefold understanding of sustainability is used to integrate the demands of the new social groups in those of existing communities. Thus, the approaches used in the districts differ: (1) In The Liberties, home of a new-build technology cluster, the focus is on an economically sustainable development. (2) In Temple Bar, Dublin's cultural quarter, the emphasis is on a socially sustainable approach. (3) In the Docklands, the area of the old inner-city harbor, an attempt is made to combine all three dimensions of sustainability by creating new buildings (ecological sustainability) for both 'old' and 'new'1 inhabitants (social sustainability) and work space for growing industries like the knowledge-intensive industries (economic sustainability). The urban revitalization strategies have one thing in common: The inner-city districts dispose of a number of protected buildings which have to be integrated in the re-structuring of the quarters. Therefore, these buildings are renovated and combined with new buildings to form an architectural and spatial image of Dublin as a city with a future that is rooted in the city's industrial past. In this sense, the urban regeneration approach even has a notion of architectural and historical sustainability. San Francisco

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Doctoral thesis 2006 GermanyPublisher:Universität Bremen Authors: Ladineo, Marcus; The report 'Our Common Future' (1987) defines Sustainable Development as 'development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs' (WCED).
