In a market situation, these forecasting errors lead to commercial risk through imbalance costs when advance contracting. This situation is one that needs to be addressed due to the steady increase in the amount of grid connected wind generation, combined with the rise of deregulated, market orientated electricity systems. In the presence of imbalance prices and uncertain generation, a method is required to determine the optimum level of contract energy to be sold on the advance markets. Such a method is presented here using Markov probabilities for a wind farm and demonstrates substantial reductions in the imbalance costs. The effect of market closure delays and forecasting window lengths are also shown.

This study investigated the effects of long-term chloroquine and ethanol administration on renal fluid and electrolyte handling and kidney structure. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administered with chloroquine diphosphate (20 microg kg(-1) bw) and/or ethanol (1.6 g kg(-1) bw) every third consecutive day for 4 weeks. Urine volume and total urinary outputs of Na+ and K+ were determined from 24-h samples. For detailed renal studies, rats were subsequently anaesthetised and challenged with a continuous jugular infusion of 0.077 M NaCl at 150 microl min(-1) 24 h after the last treatment. After a 3-h equilibration period, urine flow, Na+ and K+ excretion rates were determined over a 4-h period. Plasma concentrations of AVP and aldosterone were measured in unanaesthetised rats and in anaesthetised rats after hypotonic saline infusion. In separate groups, the rats were anaesthetised with an overdose of ether after 4 weeks of treatment and part of the right kidney was quickly collected and routinely processed for light microscopy. Chloroquine decreased Na+ excretion and increased plasma aldosterone concentrations in anaesthetised rats. Ethanol alone did not alter urinary Na+ outputs or aldosterone levels. Combined chloroquine and ethanol increased renal Na+ excretion, but did not affect plasma aldosterone levels. In unanaesthetised animals all treatments increased aldosterone levels by comparison with control rats. Urinary Na+ excretion was decreased by separate administration of either chloroquine or ethanol, but increased by combined treatment. Microscopic studies showed that concurrent chloroquine and ethanol administration induced extensive damage of the proximal tubule and collecting ducts cells. The results of this study suggest that alcohol consumption and chloroquine administration could result in diminished renal function possibly due to alteration of renally active hormones or kidney morphology.

The balancing method converts an unbalanced three-phase voltage into a balanced three-phase voltage and is designed to be used at either a downstream LV feeder location or at a three-phase load supply point. Its impact on LV protection relaying is also analysed. A PSCAD simulation study and a low power physical test are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The results illustrate that it is able to balance the 3Φ voltages in LV networks and maintain the balance by continually compensating for the voltage surges and sags caused by load variations.

The balancing method converts an unbalanced three-phase voltage into a balanced three-phase voltage and is designed to be used at either a downstream LV feeder location or at a three-phase load supply point. Its impact on LV protection relaying is also analysed. A PSCAD simulation study and a low power physical test are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The results illustrate that it is able to balance the 3Φ voltages in LV networks and maintain the balance by continually compensating for the voltage surges and sags caused by load variations.

Growing concern over emissions from increased airport operations has resulted in a need to assess the impact of aviation related activities on local air quality in and around airports, and to develop strategies to mitigate these effects. One such strategy being investigated is the use of alternative fuels in aircraft engines and auxiliary power units (APUs) as a means to diversify fuel supplies and reduce emissions. This paper summarizes the results of a study to characterize the emissions of an APU, a small gas turbine engine, burning conventional Jet A-1, a fully synthetic jet fuel, and other alternative fuels with varying compositions. Gas phase emissions were measured at the engine exit plane while PM emissions were recorded at the exit plane as well as 10 m downstream of the engine. Five percent reduction in NO(x) emissions and 5-10% reduction in CO emissions were observed for the alternative fuels. Significant reductions in PM emissions at the engine exit plane were achieved with the alternative fuels. However, as the exhaust plume expanded and cooled, organic species were found to condense on the PM. This increase in organic PM elevated the PM mass but had little impact on PM number.

Phavit Wongsirichot in OpenAIREAbstract Palm oil soap stock (POSS) was recycled from bio-waste to bio-fuel. Firstly, POSS was converted through acidification to be acidified POSS (APOSS) coupled with solvent extraction. APOSS with a high content of free fatty acids (FFAs) (90.94%) was obtained. Subsequently, the FFAs in APOSS were converted to biodiesel via esterification, catalyzed by immobilized alginate-polyvinyl alcohol (ALG-PVA) lipase. The key factors affecting the reaction, such as the temperature (30–50 °C), methanol to FFA molar ratio (2:1 to 4:1), and agitation rate (150–250 rpm) were optimized by statistical response surface methodology (RSM). The highest biodiesel yield was achieved with a reaction temperature of 40 °C, methanol/FFA molar ratio of 3:1, and 200 rpm agitation rate, as the optimal conditions. Furthermore, the biocatalyst can be reused up to 16 cycles. Interestingly, the alternative biodiesel production process reported herein promotes zero waste from the palm oil refinery process.

Responses are computed using both approaches and a comparison made to assess the circumstances in which the simplified approach may be used effectively. Bayindir, Ramazan in OpenAIREWind energy acquires reputation since the previous few decades. The importance of wind energy topic leads new investigation ranges due to the operation of turbines. The operation of the turbine mainly occurs in the generator. In this study, a MATLAB/GUI (Graphical User Interface) has been developed to compare the differences between the generator types used in wind turbines. The effect of each generator on the grid has been investigated and compared. Commonly used wind turbine generators Permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG), double-fed asynchronous generators (DFIG), squirrel cage induction generators (SCIG) and wounded rotor induction generators (WRIG) are considered. The wind turbine models are modelled using MATLAB/ Simulink interface using modelling parameters under the condition of having the same 1.5 MW total installed power. Therefore, the selection of the most suitable generator and the effects of the generator on the grid (FFT analysis results) will be investigated. The user has the option to determine the wind speed, pitch angle and generator parameter values of the simulation.

Bayindir, Ramazan in OpenAIREWind energy acquires reputation since the previous few decades. The importance of wind energy topic leads new investigation ranges due to the operation of turbines. The operation of the turbine mainly occurs in the generator. In this study, a MATLAB/GUI (Graphical User Interface) has been developed to compare the differences between the generator types used in wind turbines. The effect of each generator on the grid has been investigated and compared. Commonly used wind turbine generators Permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG), double-fed asynchronous generators (DFIG), squirrel cage induction generators (SCIG) and wounded rotor induction generators (WRIG) are considered. The wind turbine models are modelled using MATLAB/ Simulink interface using modelling parameters under the condition of having the same 1.5 MW total installed power. Therefore, the selection of the most suitable generator and the effects of the generator on the grid (FFT analysis results) will be investigated. The user has the option to determine the wind speed, pitch angle and generator parameter values of the simulation.
