The ATLAS Inner Detector is a composite tracking system consisting of silicon pixels, silicon strips and straw tubes in a 2 T magnetic field. Its installation was completed in August 2008 and the detector took part in data- taking with single LHC beams and cosmic rays. The initial detector operation, hardware commissioning and in-situ calibrations are described. Tracking performance has been measured with 7.6 million cosmic-ray events, collected using a tracking trigger and reconstructed with modular pattern-recognition and fitting software. The intrinsic hit efficiency and tracking trigger efficiencies are close to 100%. Lorentz angle measurements for both electrons and holes, specific energy-loss calibration and transition radiation turn-on measurements have been performed. Different alignment techniques have been used to reconstruct the detector geometry. After the initial alignment, a transverse impact parameter resolution of 22.1+/-0.9 m and a relative momentum resolution p/p = (4.83+/-0.16) \times 10-4 GeV-1 \times pT have been measured for high momentum tracks. 34 pages, 25 figures

The authors have performed high resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (HRARPES) on samples of K{sub 0.3}MoO{sub 3}, TiTe{sub 2} and Ti{sub 1+x}S{sub 2}, materials which are a quasi-one dimensional metal, a quasi-two dimensional metal, and a quasi two-dimensional metal (x > 0) or semi-conductor (x = 0), respectively. They are interested in looking at these samples using HRARPES as part of the general program to assess the use of photoemission to determine whether a particular system behaves like a Fermi liquid or not. For one dimensional metallic systems, angle integrated photoemission studies to date, e.g., reveal that, contrary to higher dimensional cases where a sharp Fermi cutoff is seen at the Fermi level, there is very little weight at the Fermi level. It seems that there is yet no agreement why this is so. They think that detailed information they get from HRARPES will help them answer this question. The system Ti{sub 1+x}S{sub 2} gives the possibility to control the filling of the Ti 3d conduction band by adjusting x. Interest in this system lies in measuring the spectra and the line shape of samples with different stoichiometry and correlating the spectroscopic data with the corresponding transport data.

Nanoporous metals have many technologically promising applications, but their tendency to coarsen limits their long-term stability and excludes high temperature applications. Here, we demonstrate that atomic layer deposition (ALD) can be used to stabilize and functionalize nanoporous metals. Specifically, we studied the effect of nanometer-thick alumina and titania ALD films on thermal stability, mechanical properties, and catalytic activity of nanoporous gold (np-Au). Our results demonstrate that even only 1 nm thick oxide films can stabilize the nanoscale morphology of np-Au up to 1,000°C, while simultaneously making the material stronger and stiffer. The catalytic activity of np-Au can be drastically increased by TiO(2) ALD coatings. Our results open the door to high-temperature sensor, actuator, and catalysis applications and functionalized electrodes for energy storage and harvesting applications.

In this study, synchrotron-based x-ray absorption microspectroscopy (μ-XAS) is applied to identify the chemical states of copper-rich clusters within a variety of silicon materials, including as-grown cast multicrystalline silicon solar cell material with high oxygen concentration and other silicon materials with varying degrees of oxygen concentration and copper contamination pathways. In all samples, copper silicide (Cu3Si) is the only phase of copper identified. It is noted from thermodynamic considerations that unlike certain metal species, copper tends to form a silicide and not an oxidized compound because of the strong silicon–oxygen bonding energy; consequently the likelihood of encountering an oxidized copper particle in silicon is small, in agreement with experimental data. In light of these results, the effectiveness of aluminum gettering for the removal of copper from bulk silicon is quantified via x-ray fluorescence microscopy, and a segregation coefficient is determined from experimental data to be at least (1–2)×103. Additionally, μ-XAS data directly demonstrate that the segregation mechanism of Cu in Al is the higher solubility of Cu in the liquid phase. In light of these results, possible limitations for the complete removal of Cu from bulk mc-Si are discussed.

Regulated and unregulated emissions (individual hydrocarbons, ethanol, aldehydes and ketones, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), nitro-PAH, and soluble organic fraction of particulate matter) were characterized in engines utilizing duplicate ISO 8178-C1 eight-mode tests and FTP smoke tests. Certification No. 2 diesel (400 ppm sulfur) and three ethanol/diesel blends, containing 7.7 percent, 10 percent, and 15 percent ethanol, respectively, were used. The three, Tier II, off-road engines were 6.8-L, 8.1-L, and 12.5-L in displacement and each had differing fuel injection system designs. It was found that smoke and particulate matter emissions decreased with increasing ethanol content. Changes to the emissions of carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen varied with engine design, with some increases and some decreases. As expected, increasing ethanol concentration led to higher emissions of acetaldehyde (increases ranging from 27 to 139 percent). Benzene emissions were reduced by up to 50 percent with the ethanol-blended fuels. Emissions of 1,3-butadiene were also substantially decreased, with reductions ranging from 24 to 82 percent. Isolated trends were noted for certain PAHs. There was a decrease in 1-nitropyrene with use of ethanol in all cases. Particulate phase 1-nitropyrene was reduced from 18 to 62 percent. There was also a general increase in the proportion of heavy PAHs in the particulate phase with ethanol use, and although less pronounced, a general decrease in light PAHs in the particulate phase.

With the push towards siting wind turbines farther offshore due to higher wind quality and less visibility, floating offshore wind turbines, which can be located in deep water, are becoming an economically attractive option. The International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) 61400-3 design standard covers fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines, but there are a number of new research questions that need to be answered to modify these standards so that they are applicable to floating wind turbines. One issue is the appropriate simulation length needed for floating turbines. This paper will discuss the results from a study assessing the impact of simulation length on the ultimate and fatigue loads of the structure, and will address uncertainties associated with changing the simulation length for the analyzed floating platform. Recommendations of required simulation length based on load uncertainty will be made and compared to current simulation length requirements.

Siemens Solar Industries (SSI) achieved outstanding progress toward NREL/DOE goals during this subcontract. The statistical process control methodology was applied, and it demonstrated process reproducibility and yields for a 10-cm {times} 10-cm substrate size baseline process. Based on an understanding of the importance of materials of construction and the physical layout for absorber formation reactors, SSI designed and built a replacement large-area reactor based on a more direct scale-up of the baseline reactor. While designing and building the new large-area reactor, SSI defined and demonstrated new package designs to combine 10-cm {times} 30-cm circuit plates into one package; this allowed SSI to deliver large-area prototype modules to NREL for evaluation, and to introduce the first CIS-based products--5-watt (ST5) and 10-watt (ST10) modules. After completion of the new large-area reactor, all processes were scaled to a 30-cm {times} 120-cm plate size. Subsequently, only large 30-cm {times} 120-cm circuit plates were fabricated for 30-cm {times} 120-cm prototype modules or, after cutting the large circuit plates into smaller circuit plates, for the two new CIS-based products. The scaled process exhibits generally good control for extended periods with periodic shifts in the short-term process average that appears to result from batch-to-batch variability in precursormore » or base electrode preparation. Similarly, periodic shunting along the laser-scribed pattern lines in the Mo base electrode appears to result from batch-to-batch variability in base electrode preparation. Significant progress was made in understanding transient effects in CIS devices. Transient effects are important for many topics, including accelerated testing, process definition, measurement protocols, process predictability, interpretation of experimental test results, and understanding of device structures. Long-term outdoor stability of CIS continues to be demonstrated at NREL where 30-cm {times} 30-cm and 30-cm {times} 120-cm modules have undergone testing for more than ten years. SSI delivered two sets of upgraded modules for 1-kW arrays to the NREL Outdoor Test Facility. Improvements in efficiency and the temperature coefficient for power were demonstrated for these modules with sulfur incorporated to form a graded (Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S){sub 2}) absorber. The NREL-measured average module efficiency at standard test conditions is 11.4% for the second array, and the efficiency of all modules far exceeds the DOE year 2000 goal of 10% for commercial CIS modules. SSI demonstrated a succession of NREL-confirmed world-record efficiencies culminating in demonstration of an 11.8 %-efficient, large-area, 3,651-cm{sup 2} module.« less

Outstanding progress toward reaching NREL/DOE goals was achieved during this subcontract: (1) Siemens Solar Industries (SSI) introduced two new CIS products to the SSI ST family of products, including an approximately 1-ft {times} 4-ft, 40-Wp module. (2) Process data for the production of circuit plates for the CIS family of products demonstrates improved efficiency and exhibits generally good control for extended periods. (3) The first subcontract milestone and the deliverables for this subcontract phase were met by delivering product samples that are larger and of higher efficiency than originally promised for this subcontract phase. (4) Capacity has been increased while also increasing the average efficiency of 1-ft {times} 4-ft circuit plates from 10.8% to 11.2%. (5) Yield improvements have been made by implementing improvements in processes and manufacturing protocols. (6) FM and UL approval was obtained for the ST series of products. (7) Long-term outdoor stability has been demonstrated at NREL, where 30-cm {times} 30-cm and 30-cm {times} 120-cm modules have undergone testing for more than 11 years. (8) SSI is addressing near-term and longer-term R&D topics through SSI's participation in NREL CIS National Team activities. (9) NREL confirmed a world-record 12.1% conversion efficiency large-area (3651 cm{sup 2}) CIS module. (10) R&D Magazine awarded the prestigious R&D 100 Award to SSI, NREL, and the California Energy Commission for the SSI family of CIS modules. CIS has demonstrated the prerequisites for a commitment to large-scale commercialization - high efficiency, long-term outdoor stability, and attractive cost projections. Remaining challenges are to: scale the processes to even larger areas, reach higher production capacity, demonstrate in-service durability over even longer times, and advance the fundamental understanding of CIS-based materials and devices, with the goal of further efficiency improvements for future products.
