    Contract-based nature protection schemes are a voluntary mechanism, with a limited contract duration, that aim to raise the acceptance of biodiversity conservation practices in agriculture among farmers and other land users. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the institutional settings of contract-based nature protection based on the��� ���Institutions of Sustainability��� (IoS) framework in the German Rhine-Sieg district, and to outline the way in which policy measures should be designed to encourage farmers to participate in contract-based nature protection programmes. This was achieved by answering research questions to identify the challenges, potentials and obstacles of a contract-based nature protection scheme in different ���sub-arenas��� as defined in the IoS framework. Qualitative research methods were used as the methodology. The analysis shows that main constraints for sufficient implementation of contract-based nature protection schemes are the limited consideration of the impact of climate change during the contract period, the limited consideration of regional conditions as regards the measures taken on the ground and an inflexible contract duration.     This paper examines how double exposure to both socio-economic and environmental stressors and the interaction between the two affect the population of the Northern coast of the São Paulo State, Brazil based on the conceptual and analytical framework developed by R. Leichenko and K.L. O’Brien. It provides a useful way to examine the multiple and overlapping processes of global change and, in particular, the places and the ways in which the economic and the non-economic interact. Interactions between economic and environmental change shape local landscapes of vulnerability and a major challenge for understanding vulnerability involves identifying how economic and environmental processes interact in particular places and how these interactions shape the effects of some global change processes and drive others. Pathways to increased vulnerability are multidimensional, so that socio-economic conditions may mediate the impacts of environmental change, but changing environmental conditions may also alter socio-economic capacities to maintain particular livelihood strategies. By analysing case studies of four municipalities that compound the region we found that people’s resilience, in general, are largely determined by the socio-economic context and the social vulnerability. Our finding indicate that socio-economic change brought about in the last three decades due to intense urbanization, tourism exploitation and increasingly economic activities have altered people’s livelihood and deepened social problems. We argue that the cross-scale nature of the problem and the cross-level interactions of these processes pose significant challenges for governance structures and institutions in place in the region that fail to address the roots of vulnerability and consequences of a changing environment.

    Research software has become a central asset in academic research. In Germany, the German Research Foundation (DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) recently updated the Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice. Research software is now valued similarly to classic publications and data with implications for research software sustainability and legal aspects. In this document, we present four decision trees and corresponding legal documentation tables to aid researchers. The decision trees should ease to identify i) the software policy of your institution, ii) restrictions imposed by contributors and the environment, iii) licensing collisions if 3rd party software is included, and iv) problems in licensing (existing) research software. {"references": ["Anzt H, Bach F, Druskat S et al.     In this article, Born draws on Critical Theory to chart a course between Walsh’s call to decenter science in climate communication because of its entanglements with power, and Oomen’s defense of science as a common ground and his warning against relativism. Born argues that we first need to make explicit the ways that science is bound up with capitalist production, and understand that the domination of nature is linked to the domination of humans’ inner nature. She illustrates this with a discussion of iconic images of polar bears, often used to communicate climate change in popular science magazines. These images obscure both the effects of climate change on human populations living in the Arctic and its roots in the burning of fossil fuels to support Western lifestyles.

    Der vorliegende Kommentar wirft die Frage auf, ob die COVID-19-Pandemie als eine Generalprobe für das zu sehen ist, was uns in der bevorstehenden Klimakrise erwartet. Eine Vielzahl an Faktoren hat dazu beitragen, dass wir die Herausforderung der Corona-Pandemie aktiv bewältigen konnten und können. Hierzu gehören: die Integration von Wissenschaftlichkeit, der Einbezug von Medizinstudierenden, Lehre und Digitalisierung als Impulsgeber, Informationen über das SARS-CoV-2-Virus, deren Integration in die Curricula und nicht zuletzt eine handlungsbezogene Forschung. Die Klimakrise wird uns jedoch im Sinne einer „Premiere der Klima-Pandemie“ aller Voraussicht nach vor noch größere Bedrohungen und Schwierigkeiten stellen. Die Beachtung und Integration wissenschaftlicher Evidenz, die Lehre über die Auswirkungen der globalen Erwärmung, die bewusste Wahrnehmung ärztlicher Rollen- und Vorbildfunktionen sowie die Digitalisierung können dabei als Handlungsimpulse von besonderer Relevanz sein. In the present commentary, we raise the question whether the COVID-19 pandemic should be seen as just the dress rehearsal for what awaits us in the impending climate crisis. Many factors have helped us navigate the challenge of this coronavirus pandemic and continue to do so. These include: recognizing scientific expertise, medical education, and digitalization as important driving forces, providing us with key information about the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as integrating it into our curricula and promoting action-oriented research. However, the “premiere of the climate pandemic” will, in all likelihood, confront us with even greater challenges, difficulties, and threats. Adhering to scientific findings, promoting medical education about the effects of global warming and using the power of digitalization, as well as consciously engaging in our role as medical caregivers and leaders will make a decisive contribution to providing impetus for climate action.     The report presents the study of the electrical parameters (P, Q, S, cos φ, harmonic pollution, etc.) of a modern LED street luminaire. For the purpose of the study, an LED streetlight luminaire with COB-LED and a glass optical system was selected. The electrical power of the luminaire is 30 watts, the power supply voltage is 220 volts, the driver is on reputable manufacturer. The luminaire has been studied for a long period of operation for a period of 1 month. To measure the data, a power network analyzer with very good accuracy and the ability to record the measured parameters is used. The report presents the results of the measurement of the LED illuminator and the processing of the received data. There are made appropriate conclusions from the study. Lux junior 2019: 14.     The energy expenditure (24h total energy expenditure, TEE) of a healthy individual or a patient is a vital reference point for nutritional therapy to maintain body mass. TEE is usually determined by measuring resting energy expenditure (REE) by indirect calorimetry or by estimation with the help of formulae like the formula of Harris and Benedict with an accuracy of ±20%. Further components of TEE (PAL, DIT) are estimated afterwards. TEE in intensive care patients is generally only 0–7% higher than REE, due to a low PAL and lower DIT. While diseases, like particularly sepsis, trauma and burns, cause a clinically relevant increase in REE between 40–80%, in many diseases, TEE is not markedly different from REE. A standard formula should not be used in critically ill patients, since energy expenditure changes depending on the course and the severity of disease. A clinical deterioration due to shock, severe sepsis or septic shock may lead to a drop of REE to a level only slightly (20%) above the normal REE of a healthy subject. Predominantly immobile patients should receive an energy intake between 1.0–1.2 times the determined REE, while immobile malnourished patients should receive a stepwise increased intake of 1.1–1.3 times the REE over a longer period. Critically ill patients in the acute stage of disease should be supplied equal or lower to the current TEE, energy intake should be increased stepwise up to 1.2 times (or up to 1.5 times in malnourished patients) thereafter.     For the International Large Detector (ILD) at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC) a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is foreseen as the main tracking detector. To achieve the required point resolution, Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) will be used in the amplification stage. A readout module using a stack of three Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) for gas amplification was developed at DESY and tested at the DESY II Test Beam Facility. After introducing the readout module and the infrastructure at the test beam facility, the performance related to single point and double-hit resolution of three of these modules is presented. This is followed by results on the particle identification capabilities of the system, using the specific energy loss dE/dx, and simulation studies, aimed to investigate and quantify the impact of high granularity on dE/dx resolution. In addition, a new and improved TPC field cage and the LYCORIS Large-Area Silicon-Strip Telescope for the test beam are described. The LYCORIS beam telescope is foreseen to provide a precise reference of the particle trajectory to validate the momentum resolution measured with a large TPC prototype. For this purpose, it is being installed and tested at the test beam facility within the so-called PCMAG (Persistent Current Magnet).     Green chemistry is an approach to the design, manufacture and use of chemical products to intentionally reduce or eliminate chemical hazards. It focuses on the reduction, recycling/ elimination of the use of toxic and hazardous chemicals in production processes by finding creative, alternative routes for making the desired products that minimize the impact on the environment. Sustainable economic growth requires safe, sustainable resources for industrial production. This article describes an introductory account of the basic tanets on which the concept of the Green Chemistry is based.

    For assessing and calculating biomass value chains the costs for transportation are the most important factor the economic performance as they form the largest share of the overall production cost. The objective of this work is to develop a methodology that includes not only the distance in the calculation of transportation costs. The main purpose is to also optimize the choice of transport mode depending on the given circumstances. These are especially the distance from the harvesting site to the subsequent processing or storage unit, the transported biomass with its distinctive properties (moisture content, bulk density etc.) and the required harvesting method. To achieve this, a model is elaborated that calculates the minimal overall transportation costs of a biomass-based supply chain comprising fixed and variable costs of the chosen transportation method. This could extend existing supply chain models for the elaboration and assessment of biomass-based value chains by a more comprehensive transportation modelling.     Contract-based nature protection schemes are a voluntary mechanism, with a limited contract duration, that aim to raise the acceptance of biodiversity conservation practices in agriculture among farmers and other land users. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the institutional settings of contract-based nature protection based on the��� ���Institutions of Sustainability��� (IoS) framework in the German Rhine-Sieg district, and to outline the way in which policy measures should be designed to encourage farmers to participate in contract-based nature protection programmes. This was achieved by answering research questions to identify the challenges, potentials and obstacles of a contract-based nature protection scheme in different ���sub-arenas��� as defined in the IoS framework. Qualitative research methods were used as the methodology. The analysis shows that main constraints for sufficient implementation of contract-based nature protection schemes are the limited consideration of the impact of climate change during the contract period, the limited consideration of regional conditions as regards the measures taken on the ground and an inflexible contract duration.     This paper examines how double exposure to both socio-economic and environmental stressors and the interaction between the two affect the population of the Northern coast of the São Paulo State, Brazil based on the conceptual and analytical framework developed by R. Leichenko and K.L. O’Brien. It provides a useful way to examine the multiple and overlapping processes of global change and, in particular, the places and the ways in which the economic and the non-economic interact. Interactions between economic and environmental change shape local landscapes of vulnerability and a major challenge for understanding vulnerability involves identifying how economic and environmental processes interact in particular places and how these interactions shape the effects of some global change processes and drive others. Pathways to increased vulnerability are multidimensional, so that socio-economic conditions may mediate the impacts of environmental change, but changing environmental conditions may also alter socio-economic capacities to maintain particular livelihood strategies. By analysing case studies of four municipalities that compound the region we found that people’s resilience, in general, are largely determined by the socio-economic context and the social vulnerability. Our finding indicate that socio-economic change brought about in the last three decades due to intense urbanization, tourism exploitation and increasingly economic activities have altered people’s livelihood and deepened social problems. We argue that the cross-scale nature of the problem and the cross-level interactions of these processes pose significant challenges for governance structures and institutions in place in the region that fail to address the roots of vulnerability and consequences of a changing environment.

    Research software has become a central asset in academic research. In Germany, the German Research Foundation (DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) recently updated the Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice. Research software is now valued similarly to classic publications and data with implications for research software sustainability and legal aspects. In this document, we present four decision trees and corresponding legal documentation tables to aid researchers. The decision trees should ease to identify i) the software policy of your institution, ii) restrictions imposed by contributors and the environment, iii) licensing collisions if 3rd party software is included, and iv) problems in licensing (existing) research software. {"references": ["Anzt H, Bach F, Druskat S et al.     In this article, Born draws on Critical Theory to chart a course between Walsh’s call to decenter science in climate communication because of its entanglements with power, and Oomen’s defense of science as a common ground and his warning against relativism. Born argues that we first need to make explicit the ways that science is bound up with capitalist production, and understand that the domination of nature is linked to the domination of humans’ inner nature. She illustrates this with a discussion of iconic images of polar bears, often used to communicate climate change in popular science magazines. These images obscure both the effects of climate change on human populations living in the Arctic and its roots in the burning of fossil fuels to support Western lifestyles.

    Der vorliegende Kommentar wirft die Frage auf, ob die COVID-19-Pandemie als eine Generalprobe für das zu sehen ist, was uns in der bevorstehenden Klimakrise erwartet. Eine Vielzahl an Faktoren hat dazu beitragen, dass wir die Herausforderung der Corona-Pandemie aktiv bewältigen konnten und können. Hierzu gehören: die Integration von Wissenschaftlichkeit, der Einbezug von Medizinstudierenden, Lehre und Digitalisierung als Impulsgeber, Informationen über das SARS-CoV-2-Virus, deren Integration in die Curricula und nicht zuletzt eine handlungsbezogene Forschung. Die Klimakrise wird uns jedoch im Sinne einer „Premiere der Klima-Pandemie“ aller Voraussicht nach vor noch größere Bedrohungen und Schwierigkeiten stellen. Die Beachtung und Integration wissenschaftlicher Evidenz, die Lehre über die Auswirkungen der globalen Erwärmung, die bewusste Wahrnehmung ärztlicher Rollen- und Vorbildfunktionen sowie die Digitalisierung können dabei als Handlungsimpulse von besonderer Relevanz sein. In the present commentary, we raise the question whether the COVID-19 pandemic should be seen as just the dress rehearsal for what awaits us in the impending climate crisis. Many factors have helped us navigate the challenge of this coronavirus pandemic and continue to do so. These include: recognizing scientific expertise, medical education, and digitalization as important driving forces, providing us with key information about the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as integrating it into our curricula and promoting action-oriented research. However, the “premiere of the climate pandemic” will, in all likelihood, confront us with even greater challenges, difficulties, and threats. Adhering to scientific findings, promoting medical education about the effects of global warming and using the power of digitalization, as well as consciously engaging in our role as medical caregivers and leaders will make a decisive contribution to providing impetus for climate action.     The report presents the study of the electrical parameters (P, Q, S, cos φ, harmonic pollution, etc.) of a modern LED street luminaire. For the purpose of the study, an LED streetlight luminaire with COB-LED and a glass optical system was selected. The electrical power of the luminaire is 30 watts, the power supply voltage is 220 volts, the driver is on reputable manufacturer. The luminaire has been studied for a long period of operation for a period of 1 month. To measure the data, a power network analyzer with very good accuracy and the ability to record the measured parameters is used.     The energy expenditure (24h total energy expenditure, TEE) of a healthy individual or a patient is a vital reference point for nutritional therapy to maintain body mass. TEE is usually determined by measuring resting energy expenditure (REE) by indirect calorimetry or by estimation with the help of formulae like the formula of Harris and Benedict with an accuracy of ±20%. Further components of TEE (PAL, DIT) are estimated afterwards. TEE in intensive care patients is generally only 0–7% higher than REE, due to a low PAL and lower DIT. While diseases, like particularly sepsis, trauma and burns, cause a clinically relevant increase in REE between 40–80%, in many diseases, TEE is not markedly different from REE. A standard formula should not be used in critically ill patients, since energy expenditure changes depending on the course and the severity of disease. A clinical deterioration due to shock, severe sepsis or septic shock may lead to a drop of REE to a level only slightly (20%) above the normal REE of a healthy subject. Predominantly immobile patients should receive an energy intake between 1.0–1.2 times the determined REE, while immobile malnourished patients should receive a stepwise increased intake of 1.1–1.3 times the REE over a longer period. Critically ill patients in the acute stage of disease should be supplied equal or lower to the current TEE, energy intake should be increased stepwise up to 1.2 times (or up to 1.5 times in malnourished patients) thereafter.     For the International Large Detector (ILD) at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC) a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is foreseen as the main tracking detector. To achieve the required point resolution, Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) will be used in the amplification stage. A readout module using a stack of three Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) for gas amplification was developed at DESY and tested at the DESY II Test Beam Facility. After introducing the readout module and the infrastructure at the test beam facility, the performance related to single point and double-hit resolution of three of these modules is presented. This is followed by results on the particle identification capabilities of the system, using the specific energy loss dE/dx, and simulation studies, aimed to investigate and quantify the impact of high granularity on dE/dx resolution. In addition, a new and improved TPC field cage and the LYCORIS Large-Area Silicon-Strip Telescope for the test beam are described. The LYCORIS beam telescope is foreseen to provide a precise reference of the particle trajectory to validate the momentum resolution measured with a large TPC prototype. For this purpose, it is being installed and tested at the test beam facility within the so-called PCMAG (Persistent Current Magnet).     Green chemistry is an approach to the design, manufacture and use of chemical products to intentionally reduce or eliminate chemical hazards. It focuses on the reduction, recycling/ elimination of the use of toxic and hazardous chemicals in production processes by finding creative, alternative routes for making the desired products that minimize the impact on the environment. Sustainable economic growth requires safe, sustainable resources for industrial production. This article describes an introductory account of the basic tanets on which the concept of the Green Chemistry is based.

    For assessing and calculating biomass value chains the costs for transportation are the most important factor the economic performance as they form the largest share of the overall production cost. The objective of this work is to develop a methodology that includes not only the distance in the calculation of transportation costs. The main purpose is to also optimize the choice of transport mode depending on the given circumstances. These are especially the distance from the harvesting site to the subsequent processing or storage unit, the transported biomass with its distinctive properties (moisture content, bulk density etc.) and the required harvesting method. To achieve this, a model is elaborated that calculates the minimal overall transportation costs of a biomass-based supply chain comprising fixed and variable costs of the chosen transportation method. This could extend existing supply chain models for the elaboration and assessment of biomass-based value chains by a more comprehensive transportation modelling.
