    Helicopters are used for offshore wind farms for maintenance and support flights. The number of helicopter operations is increasing with the expansion of offshore wind energy, which stresses the point that the current German regulations have not yet been validated through scientific analysis. A collaborative research project between DLR, the Technical University of Munich, the University of Stuttgart and the University of Tübingen has been conducted to examine the sizes of the flight corridors on offshore wind farms and the lateral safety clearance for helicopter hoist operations at offshore wind turbines. This paper details the results of piloted helicopter simulations in a realistic offshore wind farm scenario. The far-wake of rotating wind turbines and the near-wake of non-rotating wind turbines have been simulated with high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics under realistic turbulent inflow conditions. The resulting flow fields have been processed by superposition during piloted simulations in the research flight simulator AVES to examine the flight corridors in transit flights and the lateral safety clearance in hovering flights. The results suggest a sufficient size for the flight corridor and sufficient lateral safety clearance at the offshore wind turbines in the considered scenarios.

    Hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel is commonly expected to play a major role in future energy supply, e.g., as an admixture gas in natural gas grids. Which impacts on residential and commercial gas appliances can be expected due to the significantly different physical and chemical properties of hydrogen-enriched natural gas? This paper analyses and discusses blends of hydrogen and natural gas from the perspective of combustion science. The admixture of hydrogen into natural gas changes the properties of the fuel gas. Depending on the combustion system, burner design and other boundary conditions, these changes may cause higher combustion temperatures and laminar combustion velocities, while changing flame positions and shapes are also to be expected. For appliances that are designed for natural gas, these effects may cause risk of flashback, reduced operational safety, material deterioration, higher nitrogen oxides emissions (NOx), and efficiency losses. Theoretical considerations and first measurements indicate that the effects of hydrogen admixture on combustion temperatures and the laminar combustion velocities are often largely mitigated by a shift towards higher air excess ratios in the absence of combustion control systems, but also that common combustion control technologies may be unable to react properly to the presence of hydrogen in the fuel.

    Development challenges in the automotive industry are constantly increasing due to the high number of vehicle variants, the growing complexity of powertrains, and future legal requirements. In order to reduce development times while maintaining a high level of product quality and financial feasibility, the application of new model-based methods for virtual powertrain calibration is a particularly suitable approach. In this context, TME and FEV combine advanced thermal management models with electronic control unit (ECU) models for model-in-the-loop applications. This paper presents a development process for ECU and on-board diagnostics (OBD) functions of thermal management systems in hybrid electric vehicles. Thanks to the highly accurate 1D/3D-models, optimal control strategies for electrically actuated components can be developed in early development phases. Virtual sensors for local temperatures are developed for the ECU software to enable a cost-effective use of dedicated control functions. Furthermore, an application for OBD cooling system leakage detection is shown. Finally, the transferability of the methodology to a battery cooling system is demonstrated.

    This work aims at the economic evaluation of a semi-underground pumped hydro storage power plant erected in an abandoned open-pit mine. For the exploratory model-based analysis, we develop and apply both a simple deterministic and a stochastic net present value (NPV) approach, the latter of which uses a Monte Carlo simulation to account for revenue uncertainty from electricity price fluctuations. The analytical framework developed is applied to two promising sites in the Rheinland region in Germany, Hambach and Inden, making reasonable parameter value assumptions and considering and ignoring the lengthy duration of lower reservoir flooding. The investor’s value-at-risk is computed for alternative performance indicators (NPV, net cash recovery, profit-to-investment ratio, and specific production costs) to compare the different outcomes in terms of the project’s financial risk distribution. Calculations show that a semi-underground pumped hydro storage power plant in an abandoned open-pit mine can be constructed at reasonably low investment costs and operated at low specific production costs. However, because the investment has to be made long before the pit lake is (naturally) flooded—a process that for realistic flow rates may take up to 20 years—the project is highly uneconomical and would require substantial subsidies, as compared to a situation where flooding happens immediately.

    The transition process towards renewable energy systems is facing challenges in both fluctuating electricity generation of photovoltaic and wind power as well as socio-economic disruptions. With regard to sector integration, solutions need to be developed, especially for the mobility and the industry sector, because their ad hoc electrification and decarbonization seem to be unfeasible. Power-to-fuel (P2F) technologies may contribute to bridge the gap, as renewable energy can be transferred into hydrogen and hydrocarbon-based synthetic fuels. However, the renewable fuels production is far from economically competitive with conventional fuels. With a newly developed agent-based model, potential developments in the German energy markets were simulated for a horizon of 20 years from 2016 to 2035. The model was constructed through a participatory modeling process with relevant actors and stakeholders in the field. Model findings suggest that adjusted regulatory framework conditions (e.g., exemptions from electricity surtaxes, accurate prices for CO2-certificates, strong start-up subsidies, and drastic emission reduction quotas) are key factors for economically feasible P2F installations and will contribute to its large-scale integration into the German energy system. While plant capacities do not exceed 0.042 GW in a business-as-usual scenarios, the above-mentioned adjustments lead to plant capacities of at least 3.25 GW in 2035 with concurrent reduction in product prices.

    This paper presents in situ measurements of a newly developed current density measurement system for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). While the functional principle and technical evaluation of the measurement system were presented in a previous paper, this paper analyzes the influence of various operation parameters, including multiple start-stop operation, at the anode, cathode and cooling locations on the distribution and long-term development of the current density. The system was operated for 500 h over two years with long periods of inactivity between measurements. The measurement results are evaluated and provide additional information on how to optimize the operation modes of fuel cells, including the start and stop of such systems as well as the water balance.

    The complexity of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) systems, with their coupled motions, aero-hydro-servo-elastic dynamics, as well as non-linear system behavior and components, makes modeling and simulation indispensable. To ensure the correct implementation of the multi-physics, the engineering models and codes have to be verified and, subsequently, validated for proving the realistic representation of the real system behavior. Within the IEA (International Energy Agency) Wind Task 23 Subtask 2 offshore code-to-code comparisons have been performed. Based on these studies, using the OC3 phase IV spar-buoy FOWT system, the Modelica for Wind Turbines (MoWiT) library, developed at Fraunhofer IWES, is verified. MoWiT is capable of fully-coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulations of wind turbine systems, onshore, offshore bottom-fixed, or even offshore floating. The hierarchical programing and multibody approach in the object-oriented and equation-based modeling language Modelica have the advantage (over some other simulation tools) of component-based modeling and, hence, easily modifying the implemented system model. The code-to-code comparisons with the results from the OC3 studies show, apart from expected differences due to required assumptions in consequence of missing data and incomplete information, good agreement and, consequently, substantiate the capability of MoWiT for fully-coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulations of FOWT systems.

    A design toolbox has been developed for hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) that employ both batteries and supercapacitors, primarily focusing on optimizing the system sizing/cost and mitigating battery aging. The toolbox incorporates the BaSiS model, a non-empirical physical–electrochemical degradation model for lithium-ion batteries that enables accurate simulations of battery performance and degradation under realistic operating conditions. The paper presents a detailed description of the parameterization, and validation process for the battery model, emphasizing the high accuracy and strong reliability of the battery aging prediction. The HESS design toolbox can be used to investigate the impact of various battery/supercapacitor configurations and energy management algorithms on the design, battery degradation, and system investment cost of the hybrid storage system. To illustrate the effectiveness of the design toolbox, a case study on Dynamic Moderation frequency support in the UK grid was conducted. For this use case, the application of hybrid storage energy systems is well suited due to the highly dynamic power regulation requirements in island grids with low inertia. By utilizing the fast response of supercapacitors, the stress on the battery caused by short-term high-power peaks can be significantly alleviated. In this way, the hybrid storage system effectively reduces either the battery size or the battery aging rate. In summary, this research highlights the crucial role of a comprehensive analysis in the design of hybrid energy storage systems, addressing both battery aging and overall system costs. The design toolbox can provide transparency regarding the design space and assist in determining the most suitable HESS configuration for a given application.

    Through applying an exemplary design study, the dependencies between current density, temperatures, and weight in an electrical drive system for a small range aircraft with conventional electrical fan or propeller drives are evaluated. This study applies a combined numerical (Finite Element Method FEM) and analytical approach to the machine design, calculation of temperatures, and cooling system design (cooler, pumps, piping). A design scenario was defined using start and climb flight in a warm tropical surrounding as the worst load case. The design has to move between two fixed temperature limits: The maximum allowable temperature in the machine insulation and the ambient temperature. The implemented method facilitates a comparatively fast-medium depth design of the drive system. The derived results show, in fact, a minimum of weight at a certain current density, which is one of the key interests for the designers of the electrical machine. The main influences on this minimum are the temperature drops in the machine, the heat transfer to the cooling fluid, the heat transfer to the cooler wall, and the remaining heat rejection to the ambient. Method and results are transferable to other types of airplanes with different ratings.

    In this paper we present an approach for real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) that rely on switching models while supporting system level analysis. Using the Latency Based Linear Multistep Compound (LB-LMC) approach, we achieved a 50 ns simulation time step for systems composed of several MMC converters and for converters of various complexity. To facilitate system level testing, we introduce the use of a serial communication-based (Aurora) interface for HIL testing of MMC converters and we analyzed the effect that communication latency has on the accuracy of the HIL test. The simulation and HIL results are validated against an MMC laboratory prototype.

    Helicopters are used for offshore wind farms for maintenance and support flights. The number of helicopter operations is increasing with the expansion of offshore wind energy, which stresses the point that the current German regulations have not yet been validated through scientific analysis. A collaborative research project between DLR, the Technical University of Munich, the University of Stuttgart and the University of Tübingen has been conducted to examine the sizes of the flight corridors on offshore wind farms and the lateral safety clearance for helicopter hoist operations at offshore wind turbines. This paper details the results of piloted helicopter simulations in a realistic offshore wind farm scenario. The far-wake of rotating wind turbines and the near-wake of non-rotating wind turbines have been simulated with high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics under realistic turbulent inflow conditions. The resulting flow fields have been processed by superposition during piloted simulations in the research flight simulator AVES to examine the flight corridors in transit flights and the lateral safety clearance in hovering flights. The results suggest a sufficient size for the flight corridor and sufficient lateral safety clearance at the offshore wind turbines in the considered scenarios.

    Hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel is commonly expected to play a major role in future energy supply, e.g., as an admixture gas in natural gas grids. Which impacts on residential and commercial gas appliances can be expected due to the significantly different physical and chemical properties of hydrogen-enriched natural gas? This paper analyses and discusses blends of hydrogen and natural gas from the perspective of combustion science. The admixture of hydrogen into natural gas changes the properties of the fuel gas. Depending on the combustion system, burner design and other boundary conditions, these changes may cause higher combustion temperatures and laminar combustion velocities, while changing flame positions and shapes are also to be expected. For appliances that are designed for natural gas, these effects may cause risk of flashback, reduced operational safety, material deterioration, higher nitrogen oxides emissions (NOx), and efficiency losses. Theoretical considerations and first measurements indicate that the effects of hydrogen admixture on combustion temperatures and the laminar combustion velocities are often largely mitigated by a shift towards higher air excess ratios in the absence of combustion control systems, but also that common combustion control technologies may be unable to react properly to the presence of hydrogen in the fuel.

    Development challenges in the automotive industry are constantly increasing due to the high number of vehicle variants, the growing complexity of powertrains, and future legal requirements. In order to reduce development times while maintaining a high level of product quality and financial feasibility, the application of new model-based methods for virtual powertrain calibration is a particularly suitable approach. In this context, TME and FEV combine advanced thermal management models with electronic control unit (ECU) models for model-in-the-loop applications. This paper presents a development process for ECU and on-board diagnostics (OBD) functions of thermal management systems in hybrid electric vehicles. Thanks to the highly accurate 1D/3D-models, optimal control strategies for electrically actuated components can be developed in early development phases. Virtual sensors for local temperatures are developed for the ECU software to enable a cost-effective use of dedicated control functions. Furthermore, an application for OBD cooling system leakage detection is shown. Finally, the transferability of the methodology to a battery cooling system is demonstrated.

    This work aims at the economic evaluation of a semi-underground pumped hydro storage power plant erected in an abandoned open-pit mine. For the exploratory model-based analysis, we develop and apply both a simple deterministic and a stochastic net present value (NPV) approach, the latter of which uses a Monte Carlo simulation to account for revenue uncertainty from electricity price fluctuations. The analytical framework developed is applied to two promising sites in the Rheinland region in Germany, Hambach and Inden, making reasonable parameter value assumptions and considering and ignoring the lengthy duration of lower reservoir flooding. The investor’s value-at-risk is computed for alternative performance indicators (NPV, net cash recovery, profit-to-investment ratio, and specific production costs) to compare the different outcomes in terms of the project’s financial risk distribution. Calculations show that a semi-underground pumped hydro storage power plant in an abandoned open-pit mine can be constructed at reasonably low investment costs and operated at low specific production costs. However, because the investment has to be made long before the pit lake is (naturally) flooded—a process that for realistic flow rates may take up to 20 years—the project is highly uneconomical and would require substantial subsidies, as compared to a situation where flooding happens immediately.

    The transition process towards renewable energy systems is facing challenges in both fluctuating electricity generation of photovoltaic and wind power as well as socio-economic disruptions. With regard to sector integration, solutions need to be developed, especially for the mobility and the industry sector, because their ad hoc electrification and decarbonization seem to be unfeasible. Power-to-fuel (P2F) technologies may contribute to bridge the gap, as renewable energy can be transferred into hydrogen and hydrocarbon-based synthetic fuels. However, the renewable fuels production is far from economically competitive with conventional fuels. With a newly developed agent-based model, potential developments in the German energy markets were simulated for a horizon of 20 years from 2016 to 2035. The model was constructed through a participatory modeling process with relevant actors and stakeholders in the field. Model findings suggest that adjusted regulatory framework conditions (e.g., exemptions from electricity surtaxes, accurate prices for CO2-certificates, strong start-up subsidies, and drastic emission reduction quotas) are key factors for economically feasible P2F installations and will contribute to its large-scale integration into the German energy system. While plant capacities do not exceed 0.042 GW in a business-as-usual scenarios, the above-mentioned adjustments lead to plant capacities of at least 3.25 GW in 2035 with concurrent reduction in product prices.

    This paper presents in situ measurements of a newly developed current density measurement system for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). While the functional principle and technical evaluation of the measurement system were presented in a previous paper, this paper analyzes the influence of various operation parameters, including multiple start-stop operation, at the anode, cathode and cooling locations on the distribution and long-term development of the current density. The system was operated for 500 h over two years with long periods of inactivity between measurements. The measurement results are evaluated and provide additional information on how to optimize the operation modes of fuel cells, including the start and stop of such systems as well as the water balance.

    The complexity of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) systems, with their coupled motions, aero-hydro-servo-elastic dynamics, as well as non-linear system behavior and components, makes modeling and simulation indispensable. To ensure the correct implementation of the multi-physics, the engineering models and codes have to be verified and, subsequently, validated for proving the realistic representation of the real system behavior. Within the IEA (International Energy Agency) Wind Task 23 Subtask 2 offshore code-to-code comparisons have been performed. Based on these studies, using the OC3 phase IV spar-buoy FOWT system, the Modelica for Wind Turbines (MoWiT) library, developed at Fraunhofer IWES, is verified. MoWiT is capable of fully-coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulations of wind turbine systems, onshore, offshore bottom-fixed, or even offshore floating. The hierarchical programing and multibody approach in the object-oriented and equation-based modeling language Modelica have the advantage (over some other simulation tools) of component-based modeling and, hence, easily modifying the implemented system model. The code-to-code comparisons with the results from the OC3 studies show, apart from expected differences due to required assumptions in consequence of missing data and incomplete information, good agreement and, consequently, substantiate the capability of MoWiT for fully-coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulations of FOWT systems.

    A design toolbox has been developed for hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) that employ both batteries and supercapacitors, primarily focusing on optimizing the system sizing/cost and mitigating battery aging. The toolbox incorporates the BaSiS model, a non-empirical physical–electrochemical degradation model for lithium-ion batteries that enables accurate simulations of battery performance and degradation under realistic operating conditions. The paper presents a detailed description of the parameterization, and validation process for the battery model, emphasizing the high accuracy and strong reliability of the battery aging prediction. The HESS design toolbox can be used to investigate the impact of various battery/supercapacitor configurations and energy management algorithms on the design, battery degradation, and system investment cost of the hybrid storage system. To illustrate the effectiveness of the design toolbox, a case study on Dynamic Moderation frequency support in the UK grid was conducted. For this use case, the application of hybrid storage energy systems is well suited due to the highly dynamic power regulation requirements in island grids with low inertia. By utilizing the fast response of supercapacitors, the stress on the battery caused by short-term high-power peaks can be significantly alleviated. In this way, the hybrid storage system effectively reduces either the battery size or the battery aging rate. In summary, this research highlights the crucial role of a comprehensive analysis in the design of hybrid energy storage systems, addressing both battery aging and overall system costs. The design toolbox can provide transparency regarding the design space and assist in determining the most suitable HESS configuration for a given application.

    Through applying an exemplary design study, the dependencies between current density, temperatures, and weight in an electrical drive system for a small range aircraft with conventional electrical fan or propeller drives are evaluated. This study applies a combined numerical (Finite Element Method FEM) and analytical approach to the machine design, calculation of temperatures, and cooling system design (cooler, pumps, piping). A design scenario was defined using start and climb flight in a warm tropical surrounding as the worst load case. The design has to move between two fixed temperature limits: The maximum allowable temperature in the machine insulation and the ambient temperature. The implemented method facilitates a comparatively fast-medium depth design of the drive system. The derived results show, in fact, a minimum of weight at a certain current density, which is one of the key interests for the designers of the electrical machine. The main influences on this minimum are the temperature drops in the machine, the heat transfer to the cooling fluid, the heat transfer to the cooler wall, and the remaining heat rejection to the ambient. Method and results are transferable to other types of airplanes with different ratings.

    In this paper we present an approach for real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) that rely on switching models while supporting system level analysis. Using the Latency Based Linear Multistep Compound (LB-LMC) approach, we achieved a 50 ns simulation time step for systems composed of several MMC converters and for converters of various complexity. To facilitate system level testing, we introduce the use of a serial communication-based (Aurora) interface for HIL testing of MMC converters and we analyzed the effect that communication latency has on the accuracy of the HIL test. The simulation and HIL results are validated against an MMC laboratory prototype.
