Sebastian Bauer in OpenAIREIn the heating sector, borehole heat exchangers have become popular for supplying renewable energy. They tap into the subsurface to extract geothermal energy for heating purposes. For advanced applications, borehole heat exchangers require insulation in the upper part of the borehole either to meet legal requirements or to improve their performance. A priori numerical heat transport models of the subsurface are imperative for the systems’ planning and design. Only fully discretized models can account for depth-dependent borehole properties like insulated sections, but the model setup is cumbersome and the simulations come at high computational cost. Hence, these models are often not suitable for the simulation of larger installations. This study presents an analytical solution for the simulation of the thermal interactions of partly insulated borehole heat exchangers. A benchmark with a fully discretized OpenGeoSys model confirms sufficient accuracy of the analytical solution. In an application example, the functionality of the tool is demonstrated by finding the ideal length of a borehole insulation using mathematical optimization and by quantifying the effect of the insulation on the borehole heat exchanger performance. The presented method allows for accommodation of future advancements in borehole heat exchangers in numerical simulations at comparatively low computational cost.

David Sperber in OpenAIREA decrease of surface passivation quality is observed in FZ, Cz, and mc-Si lifetime samples during light-induced degradation (LID) treatments. It is shown that this degradation occurs not only in samples with single SiN x :H layers but also when using layer stacks consisting of SiO x /SiN x :H or AlO x :H/SiN x :H. Time-resolved calculation of the surface saturation current density J 0 s is shown to be a reliable method to separate changes in the bulk and at the surface of samples during LID treatments. The impact of the observed changes in passivation quality on the outcome and interpretation of LID experiments aiming at changes in the bulk of Cz or mc-Si is investigated and discussed.

Charlotte Rudolph in OpenAIREAbstract The potential of dimethyl ether (DME) and dimethoxymethane (DMM), representatives of the attractive oxymethylene ether (OME) alternative fuel family, are explored here as reactivity enhancers for methane-fueled polygeneration processes. Typically, such processes that can flexibly generate power, heat, or chemicals, operate under fuel-rich conditions in gas turbines or internal combustion engines. To provide a consistent basis for the underlying reaction mechanisms, it is recognized that speciation data for the DME/CH4 fuel combination are available for such conditions while such information for the DMM/CH4 system is largely lacking. In addition, it should be noted that a detailed speciation study in flames, i.e., combustion systems involving chemistry and transport processes over a large temperature range, is still missing in spite of the potential of such systems to provide extended species information. In a systematic approach using speciation with electron ionization molecular-beam mass spectrometry (EI-MBMS), we thus report, as a first step, investigation of six fuel-rich premixed flames of DME and DMM and their blends with methane with special attention on interesting chemicals. Secondly, a comprehensive but compact DME/DMM/CH4 model (PolyMech2.1) is developed based on these data. This model is then examined against available experimental data under conditions from various facilities, focusing preferentially on elevated pressure and fuel-rich conditions. Comparison with existing literature models is also included in this evaluation. Thirdly, an analysis is given on this basis, via the extensively tested PolyMech2.1 model, for assumed polygeneration conditions in a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine environment. The main interest of this model-assisted exploration is to evaluate whether addition of DME or DMM in a polygeneration process can lead to potentially useful conditions for the production of syngas or other chemicals, along with work and heat. The flame results show that high syngas yields, i.e., up to ∼78% for CO and ∼35% for H2, can be obtained in their burnt gases. From the large number of intermediates detected, predominantly acetylene, ethylene, ethane, and formaldehyde show yields of 2.1−4.4% (C2 hydrocarbons) and 3.4−8.7% (CH2O), respectively. Also, methanol and methyl formate show comparably high yields of up to 0.6−6.7% in the flames with DMM, which is 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than in those with DME as the additive. In the modeling-assisted exploration of the engine process, the PolyMech2.1 model is seen to perform at significantly reduced computational costs compared to a recently validated model without sacrificing the prediction performance. Promising conditions for the assumed polygeneration process using fuel combinations in the DME/DMM/CH4 system are identified with attractive syngas yields of up to 77% together with work and heat output at exergetic efficiencies of up to 89% with DME.

Forooghi, P. in OpenAIREAbstract Surface structuring in form of streamwise-aligned triangular ridges is investigated in the framework of a fully developed turbulent channel flow with constant wall temperatures of different values prescribed on the upper and lower walls at Re b = 18000 . Two arrangements of the ridges on both channel walls are considered – a symmetrical arrangement and a staggered arrangement with a spanwise shift of the upper wall structure by a half ridge separation. The ridges generate a strong large-scale secondary motion and hence enhance momentum and heat transfer in the channel by approximately 30% relatively to the smooth channel. In spite of the fact that both arrangements translate into very similar global flow properties, the composition of skin friction coefficient and Stanton number significantly differs. The componental split-up of the friction coefficient reveals that the enhancement of momentum transfer mainly originates from the dispersive component linked to the secondary flows. For the Stanton number, however, the enhancement arises not only from the dispersive component, but also from a strong modification of the turbulent flow properties.

Sebastiano Tomassetti in OpenAIREAbstract Solar radiation can be considered as one of the most suitable energy source to be used for cooking food. It is therefore important to promote advancement in solar cooking systems, in particular as concerns their efficiency and cooking times. In this work, we designed, realized and tested a novel low-cost solar cooker that uses a high-performance light-concentrating Fresnel lens, which is able to concentrate onto a small focal area a large amount of solar radiation. The radiation is then reflected by a mirror towards a cooking surface, where a pot can be located. The cooker has a geometrical concentration ratio of 40.97. In order to characterize the thermal performance of the cooker, we carried out several outdoor tests with a dedicated test setup, using water and silicone oil as absorbing media. Respect to other solar cookers, results show that the proposed cooker is able to reach high temperatures with good efficiency and reduced heating times: 3 kg of water can reach 90 °C in around 30 min, while 3 kg of silicone oil can be taken from 40 to 170 °C in less than one hour.

Jyri Mustajoki in OpenAIRESpatial planning has to deal with trade-offs between various stakeholders’ wishes and needs as part of planning and management of landscapes, natural resources and/or biodiversity. To make ecosystem services (ES) trade-off research more relevant for spatial planning, we propose an analytical framework,which puts stakeholders, their land-use/management choices, their impact on ES and responses at the centre. Based on 24 cases from around the world, we used this framing to analyse the appearance and diversity of real-world ES trade-offs. They cover a wide range of trade-offs related to ecosystem use, including: land-use change, management regimes, technical versus nature-based solutions, natural resource use, and management of species. The ES trade-offs studied featured a complexity that was far greater than what is often described in the ES literature. Influential users and context setters are at the core of the trade-off decision-making, but most of the impact is felt by non-influential users. Provisioning and cultural ES were the most targeted in the studied trade-offs, but regulating ES were the most impacted. Stakeholders’ characteristics, such as influence, impact faced, and concerns can partially explain their position and response in relation to trade-offs. Based on the research findings, we formulate recommendations for spatial planning.

The outlined analysis validates the dynamic wake meandering (DWM) model based on loads and power production measured at an onshore wind farm with small turbine distances. Special focus is given to the performance of a version of the DWM model that was previously recalibrated at the site. The recalibration is based on measurements from a turbine nacelle-mounted lidar system. The different versions of the DWM model are compared to the commonly used Frandsen wake-added turbulence model. The results of the recalibrated wake model agree very well with the measurements, whereas the Frandsen model overestimates the loads drastically for short turbine distances. Furthermore, lidar measurements of the wind speed deficit as well as the wake meandering are incorporated in the DWM model definition in order to decrease the uncertainties.

Pilloni, L. in OpenAIRESmall-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and neutron diffraction have been utilized for micro-structural characterization of Eurofer97/2 heats submitted to thermo-mechanical treatments, with the aim to investigate macroscopic material volumes and to complete the local information provided by scanning electron microscopy. The measurements were carried out at MLZ in Garching, utilizing for SANS also a polarized neutron beam. The investigated samples had been submitted to austenitization and tempering at different temperatures, as well as to double austenitization and to “ausforming”, that is austenitization followed by hot rolling. For most of the examined treatments, nearly identical SANS cross-sections were measured, close to the one of Eurofer97/1. In the ausformed sample the nuclear SANS cross-section is also nearly identical to the other samples but the magnetic one is one order of magnitude higher. Furthermore, over a wide experimental interval its nuclear-magnetic interference, measured by polarized SANS, is of opposite sign with respect to the non-ausformed samples. Neutron diffraction measurements provided strong evidence that the origin of such effects is due to the presence of the non-magnetic austenite phase in the ausformed sample, with an estimated volume fraction of 0.17 ± 0.02; within the experimental resolution, it disappears after subsequent tempering.

The effects of changes in climate predicted for 2100—reduction in recharge, increase in water demand and sea-level rise—on groundwater volume and saltwater intrusion have been quantified in the Maltese Islands, an archipelago located at the center of the Mediterranean Sea. A three-dimensional density dependent and heterogeneous model, working in transient conditions, was developed based on morphological and geological information. The hydraulic conductivity and porosity of the lithological formations were derived from previous tests and studies conducted on the islands. The complex fault system intersecting the area has also been included in the model. The results show that among the three considered factors affecting groundwater resources, the most significant is the increase in water demand, which is closely followed by the decrease in groundwater recharge. Sea-level rise plays a marginal role. The 80-year simulation period showed that these combined impacts would cause a loss of more than 16% of groundwater volume.
