    The pressure on the energy sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is increasing. In the light of current greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector, further expansion of renewable energy sources (RES) is inevitable to reduce emissions and reach the climate goals. This study aims at investigating structural characteristics of German counties regarding advantages for self-sufficient power systems based on RES. The modelling of the power sector based on RES is coupled with a cluster analysis in order to draw a large-scale conclusion on structural characteristics beneficial or obstructive for municipal energy systems. Ten clusters are identified with the Ward algorithm in a hierarchical-agglomerative method. The results underline a further need for RES expansion projects in order to close the gap between supply and demand. Only then, bioenergy can effectively balance the offset and support a truly self-sufficient local energy system. While the model results indicate that the majority of the counties are suitable for further expansion, this suitability is to be questioned in cluster 10. High population density is a critical characteristic, because with it come both a high demand and limited sites for further RES expansion projects.

    To achieve carbon neutrality and improve emission reduction efficiency, capturing carbon dioxide from the air on a large scale and promoting the application and innovation of carbon capture technology (CCUS) are the most important goals. This study undertakes an annual and comprehensive evaluation of the policy and the technological innovation efficiency (TIE) of 10 listed companies in China using the DEA model and the Malmquist index analysis method. The number of relevant laws and policies is significant, but they are not well coordinated. The static evaluation results indicate that the complete factor production rate is low, generally lower than 0.9, and the technical innovation efficiency is weak, mainly because of technological backwardness. The dynamic evaluation results indicate that the changes in total factor productivity (TFP) each year are primarily affected by changes in technological progress. This suggests that most domestic enterprises are still exploring technological innovation (TI) and operational business models. Finally, this study proposes measures to improve the TIE of carbon capture technology enterprises in China, including giving full play to the role of the government, expanding effective investment, and improving innovational ability.

    The electrification of public transport bus networks can be carried out utilizing different technological solutions, like trolley, battery or fuel cell buses. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how and to what extent existing bus networks can be electrified with fast charging battery buses. The so called opportunity chargers use mainly the regular dwell time at the stops to charge their batteries. This results in a strong linkage between the vehicle scheduling and the infrastructure planning. The analysis is based on real-world data of the bus network in Muenster, a mid-sized city in Germany. The outcomes underline the necessity to focus on entire vehicle schedules instead on individual trips. The tradeoff between required battery capacity and charging power is explained in detail. Furthermore, the impact on the electricity grid is discussed based on the load profiles of a selected charging station and a combined load profile of the entire network.

    Development challenges in the automotive industry are constantly increasing due to the high number of vehicle variants, the growing complexity of powertrains, and future legal requirements. In order to reduce development times while maintaining a high level of product quality and financial feasibility, the application of new model-based methods for virtual powertrain calibration is a particularly suitable approach. In this context, TME and FEV combine advanced thermal management models with electronic control unit (ECU) models for model-in-the-loop applications. This paper presents a development process for ECU and on-board diagnostics (OBD) functions of thermal management systems in hybrid electric vehicles. Thanks to the highly accurate 1D/3D-models, optimal control strategies for electrically actuated components can be developed in early development phases. Virtual sensors for local temperatures are developed for the ECU software to enable a cost-effective use of dedicated control functions. Furthermore, an application for OBD cooling system leakage detection is shown. Finally, the transferability of the methodology to a battery cooling system is demonstrated.

    This work aims at the economic evaluation of a semi-underground pumped hydro storage power plant erected in an abandoned open-pit mine. For the exploratory model-based analysis, we develop and apply both a simple deterministic and a stochastic net present value (NPV) approach, the latter of which uses a Monte Carlo simulation to account for revenue uncertainty from electricity price fluctuations. The analytical framework developed is applied to two promising sites in the Rheinland region in Germany, Hambach and Inden, making reasonable parameter value assumptions and considering and ignoring the lengthy duration of lower reservoir flooding. The investor’s value-at-risk is computed for alternative performance indicators (NPV, net cash recovery, profit-to-investment ratio, and specific production costs) to compare the different outcomes in terms of the project’s financial risk distribution. Calculations show that a semi-underground pumped hydro storage power plant in an abandoned open-pit mine can be constructed at reasonably low investment costs and operated at low specific production costs. However, because the investment has to be made long before the pit lake is (naturally) flooded—a process that for realistic flow rates may take up to 20 years—the project is highly uneconomical and would require substantial subsidies, as compared to a situation where flooding happens immediately.

    In this paper we present an approach for real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) that rely on switching models while supporting system level analysis. Using the Latency Based Linear Multistep Compound (LB-LMC) approach, we achieved a 50 ns simulation time step for systems composed of several MMC converters and for converters of various complexity. To facilitate system level testing, we introduce the use of a serial communication-based (Aurora) interface for HIL testing of MMC converters and we analyzed the effect that communication latency has on the accuracy of the HIL test. The simulation and HIL results are validated against an MMC laboratory prototype.

    This paper provides an overview of modern feedback control methods for the voltage regulation in DC/DC converters of DC microgrids. Control objectives and practical restrictions are defined and used as indicators for the analysis and performance assessment of the control methods. After presenting the concept of each control method, the advantages and limitations in the converter applications are discussed. The main conclusions of this overview can be used as recommendations for the selection of the suitable control method according to the control requirements in the DC microgrid. The low robustness against disturbances is a major issue in all control methods. For the enhancement of the robustness of the feedback control methods, three approaches are reviewed. Applications of these approaches in DC/DC converters are compared with regard to the achieved disturbance rejection and the related cost of nominal performance degradation. The disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation (DUEA) framework appears to be the most promising approach to compromising these opposing control objectives. This overview is presented for a general DC/DC converter, without any additional control design requirement imposed by a specific converter plant. This allows the generalisation of the conclusions of the performance assessment, which can facilitate the application of the control methods in similar systems, such as in AC/DC converters or motor drives.

    Self-recuperative burners are a common solution for efficient combustion systems in industrial furnaces. Due to the geometric complexity of the recuperators, a detailed CFD simulation is computationally expensive and not feasible for simulation models of burner-integrated systems such as radiant tubes. Especially in the FSI studies of radiant tubes, the temperature of the radiant tube surrounding the burner is decisive for the final results. The exclusion of the recuperator from the simulation models introduces significant uncertainties in the simulations results. The presented paper describes an innovative, efficient approach to model a fin-type recuperator in which the recuperator is geometrically reduced. The resulting acceleration of the numerical simulation makes a fully dynamic modelling of the recuperator in a radiant tube simulation possible. Specifically designed source terms are used to model pressure loss and heat transfer inside the recuperator to match results obtained with a detailed simulation model. The results show deviations in total heat transfer of less than 1.3% with a 98.5% reduction of numerical mesh size. The computational savings enable comprehensive modelling of air preheat for radiant tube simulations and accurately replicate flow and temperature profiles in the recuperator.

    The overhead catenary truck is an interesting technology for long-haul transportation with heavy-duty trucks because it can combine the advantage of energy supply via catenary while driving and the flexibility of a battery truck on routes without catenary using the traction battery. This study investigates the energy consumptions of overhead catenary trucks on German highways and considers different configurations for the traction battery and catenary power system. Afterwards the life cycle costs of overhead catenary trucks are calculated for a specified long-haul transportation scenario and the results are compared to battery electric truck and diesel truck using the findings of a previous study by the authors. The energy consumption of the considered overhead catenary trucks is approximately equal to that of a battery electric truck but only about a half of the equivalent energy consumption of a conventional diesel truck. According to the cost assumptions in this study, the total life cycle costs of overhead catenary trucks can be in the range of the conventional diesel truck, showing the competitiveness of this alternative truck technology.

    Back-up heaters are essential for sustainable retrofit heat pump systems to achieve low capital costs and high system temperatures. Despite its importance, current literature focuses primarily on single aspects of the interaction between the back-up heater and the heat pump system. Furthermore, influences of varying scenarios are typically not considered. This paper simultaneously investigates the impact of 18 different scenarios on the optimal answer to the questions: Which back-up heater to choose, where to place it, and how to control it? A scenario consists of boundary conditions for weather, building envelope, radiator sizing, operational envelope, and the electricity-to-gas price/emission ratio, respectively. Using annual dynamic Modelica simulations, we evaluate and assess all interdependencies based on a full factorial design. We analyze final energy consumption, thermal comfort, and back-up heater as objectives. For gas-fired back-up heaters, the optimal placement and control align with current state-of-the-art recommendations. However, for electric back-up heaters, current guideline recommendations yield up to 30% higher operational costs and emissions compared to our findings. Consequently, future studies should develop optimal design rules for sustainable retrofit heat pump systems.

    The pressure on the energy sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is increasing. In the light of current greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector, further expansion of renewable energy sources (RES) is inevitable to reduce emissions and reach the climate goals. This study aims at investigating structural characteristics of German counties regarding advantages for self-sufficient power systems based on RES. The modelling of the power sector based on RES is coupled with a cluster analysis in order to draw a large-scale conclusion on structural characteristics beneficial or obstructive for municipal energy systems. Ten clusters are identified with the Ward algorithm in a hierarchical-agglomerative method. The results underline a further need for RES expansion projects in order to close the gap between supply and demand. Only then, bioenergy can effectively balance the offset and support a truly self-sufficient local energy system. While the model results indicate that the majority of the counties are suitable for further expansion, this suitability is to be questioned in cluster 10. High population density is a critical characteristic, because with it come both a high demand and limited sites for further RES expansion projects.

    To achieve carbon neutrality and improve emission reduction efficiency, capturing carbon dioxide from the air on a large scale and promoting the application and innovation of carbon capture technology (CCUS) are the most important goals. This study undertakes an annual and comprehensive evaluation of the policy and the technological innovation efficiency (TIE) of 10 listed companies in China using the DEA model and the Malmquist index analysis method. The number of relevant laws and policies is significant, but they are not well coordinated. The static evaluation results indicate that the complete factor production rate is low, generally lower than 0.9, and the technical innovation efficiency is weak, mainly because of technological backwardness. The dynamic evaluation results indicate that the changes in total factor productivity (TFP) each year are primarily affected by changes in technological progress. This suggests that most domestic enterprises are still exploring technological innovation (TI) and operational business models. Finally, this study proposes measures to improve the TIE of carbon capture technology enterprises in China, including giving full play to the role of the government, expanding effective investment, and improving innovational ability.

    The electrification of public transport bus networks can be carried out utilizing different technological solutions, like trolley, battery or fuel cell buses. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how and to what extent existing bus networks can be electrified with fast charging battery buses. The so called opportunity chargers use mainly the regular dwell time at the stops to charge their batteries. This results in a strong linkage between the vehicle scheduling and the infrastructure planning. The analysis is based on real-world data of the bus network in Muenster, a mid-sized city in Germany. The outcomes underline the necessity to focus on entire vehicle schedules instead on individual trips. The tradeoff between required battery capacity and charging power is explained in detail. Furthermore, the impact on the electricity grid is discussed based on the load profiles of a selected charging station and a combined load profile of the entire network.

    Development challenges in the automotive industry are constantly increasing due to the high number of vehicle variants, the growing complexity of powertrains, and future legal requirements. In order to reduce development times while maintaining a high level of product quality and financial feasibility, the application of new model-based methods for virtual powertrain calibration is a particularly suitable approach. In this context, TME and FEV combine advanced thermal management models with electronic control unit (ECU) models for model-in-the-loop applications. This paper presents a development process for ECU and on-board diagnostics (OBD) functions of thermal management systems in hybrid electric vehicles. Thanks to the highly accurate 1D/3D-models, optimal control strategies for electrically actuated components can be developed in early development phases. Virtual sensors for local temperatures are developed for the ECU software to enable a cost-effective use of dedicated control functions. Furthermore, an application for OBD cooling system leakage detection is shown. Finally, the transferability of the methodology to a battery cooling system is demonstrated.

    This work aims at the economic evaluation of a semi-underground pumped hydro storage power plant erected in an abandoned open-pit mine. For the exploratory model-based analysis, we develop and apply both a simple deterministic and a stochastic net present value (NPV) approach, the latter of which uses a Monte Carlo simulation to account for revenue uncertainty from electricity price fluctuations. The analytical framework developed is applied to two promising sites in the Rheinland region in Germany, Hambach and Inden, making reasonable parameter value assumptions and considering and ignoring the lengthy duration of lower reservoir flooding. The investor’s value-at-risk is computed for alternative performance indicators (NPV, net cash recovery, profit-to-investment ratio, and specific production costs) to compare the different outcomes in terms of the project’s financial risk distribution. Calculations show that a semi-underground pumped hydro storage power plant in an abandoned open-pit mine can be constructed at reasonably low investment costs and operated at low specific production costs. However, because the investment has to be made long before the pit lake is (naturally) flooded—a process that for realistic flow rates may take up to 20 years—the project is highly uneconomical and would require substantial subsidies, as compared to a situation where flooding happens immediately.

    In this paper we present an approach for real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) that rely on switching models while supporting system level analysis. Using the Latency Based Linear Multistep Compound (LB-LMC) approach, we achieved a 50 ns simulation time step for systems composed of several MMC converters and for converters of various complexity. To facilitate system level testing, we introduce the use of a serial communication-based (Aurora) interface for HIL testing of MMC converters and we analyzed the effect that communication latency has on the accuracy of the HIL test. The simulation and HIL results are validated against an MMC laboratory prototype.

    This paper provides an overview of modern feedback control methods for the voltage regulation in DC/DC converters of DC microgrids. Control objectives and practical restrictions are defined and used as indicators for the analysis and performance assessment of the control methods. After presenting the concept of each control method, the advantages and limitations in the converter applications are discussed. The main conclusions of this overview can be used as recommendations for the selection of the suitable control method according to the control requirements in the DC microgrid. The low robustness against disturbances is a major issue in all control methods. For the enhancement of the robustness of the feedback control methods, three approaches are reviewed. Applications of these approaches in DC/DC converters are compared with regard to the achieved disturbance rejection and the related cost of nominal performance degradation. The disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation (DUEA) framework appears to be the most promising approach to compromising these opposing control objectives. This overview is presented for a general DC/DC converter, without any additional control design requirement imposed by a specific converter plant. This allows the generalisation of the conclusions of the performance assessment, which can facilitate the application of the control methods in similar systems, such as in AC/DC converters or motor drives.

    Self-recuperative burners are a common solution for efficient combustion systems in industrial furnaces. Due to the geometric complexity of the recuperators, a detailed CFD simulation is computationally expensive and not feasible for simulation models of burner-integrated systems such as radiant tubes. Especially in the FSI studies of radiant tubes, the temperature of the radiant tube surrounding the burner is decisive for the final results. The exclusion of the recuperator from the simulation models introduces significant uncertainties in the simulations results. The presented paper describes an innovative, efficient approach to model a fin-type recuperator in which the recuperator is geometrically reduced. The resulting acceleration of the numerical simulation makes a fully dynamic modelling of the recuperator in a radiant tube simulation possible. Specifically designed source terms are used to model pressure loss and heat transfer inside the recuperator to match results obtained with a detailed simulation model. The results show deviations in total heat transfer of less than 1.3% with a 98.5% reduction of numerical mesh size. The computational savings enable comprehensive modelling of air preheat for radiant tube simulations and accurately replicate flow and temperature profiles in the recuperator.

    The overhead catenary truck is an interesting technology for long-haul transportation with heavy-duty trucks because it can combine the advantage of energy supply via catenary while driving and the flexibility of a battery truck on routes without catenary using the traction battery. This study investigates the energy consumptions of overhead catenary trucks on German highways and considers different configurations for the traction battery and catenary power system. Afterwards the life cycle costs of overhead catenary trucks are calculated for a specified long-haul transportation scenario and the results are compared to battery electric truck and diesel truck using the findings of a previous study by the authors. The energy consumption of the considered overhead catenary trucks is approximately equal to that of a battery electric truck but only about a half of the equivalent energy consumption of a conventional diesel truck. According to the cost assumptions in this study, the total life cycle costs of overhead catenary trucks can be in the range of the conventional diesel truck, showing the competitiveness of this alternative truck technology.

    Back-up heaters are essential for sustainable retrofit heat pump systems to achieve low capital costs and high system temperatures. Despite its importance, current literature focuses primarily on single aspects of the interaction between the back-up heater and the heat pump system. Furthermore, influences of varying scenarios are typically not considered. This paper simultaneously investigates the impact of 18 different scenarios on the optimal answer to the questions: Which back-up heater to choose, where to place it, and how to control it? A scenario consists of boundary conditions for weather, building envelope, radiator sizing, operational envelope, and the electricity-to-gas price/emission ratio, respectively. Using annual dynamic Modelica simulations, we evaluate and assess all interdependencies based on a full factorial design. We analyze final energy consumption, thermal comfort, and back-up heater as objectives. For gas-fired back-up heaters, the optimal placement and control align with current state-of-the-art recommendations. However, for electric back-up heaters, current guideline recommendations yield up to 30% higher operational costs and emissions compared to our findings. Consequently, future studies should develop optimal design rules for sustainable retrofit heat pump systems.
