The control objective is to both minimise the economic cost of importing energy into the system as well as providing the service of smoothing the profile of the electrical energy imported thus levelling the load and reducing peak demand. The capabilities of the approach are demonstrated by its application to a representative case study based on two buildings at the University of Manchester. Results show that model predictive control is capable of simultaneously addressing minimisation of economic cost as well as smoothing the electrical energy import.

An analysis is presented on the consequences of integrating embodied impacts into the assessment of the environmental advantageousness of net-zero concepts. Fundamental issues needing consideration in the design process - based on the evaluation of primary energy use and related greenhouse gas emissions - are examined by comparing three net-zero building design and assessment cases: (1) no embodied impacts included, net balance limited to the operation stage only; (2) embodied impacts included but evaluated separately from the operation stage; and (3) embodied impacts included with the operation stage in a life cycle approach. A review of recent developments in research, standardization activities and design practice and the presentation of a case study of a residential building in Norway highlight the critical importance of performance indicator definitions and system boundaries. A practical checklist is presented to guide the process of incorporating embodied impacts across the building life cycle phases in net-zero design. Its implications are considered on overall environmental impact assessment of buildings. Research and development challenges, as well as recommendations for designers and other stakeholders, are identified.

A clear division of responsibility and a command hierarchy organize system operation. With multi-agent based control systems, this control paradigm may be shifted to a more decentralized open-access collaboration control paradigm. This shift cannot happen at once, but must fit also with current operation principles. In order to establish a scalable and transparent system control architecture, organizing principles have to be identified that allow for a smooth transition. This paper presents a concept for the representation and organization of control- and resource-allocation, enabling computational reasoning and system awareness. The principles are discussed with respect to a recently proposed Subgrid operation concept.

The main feature of the proposed model is the decomposition of weekly load observations into two independent components: trend line and seasonal variations. The trend line is described by the combination of the polynomial regression and the first-order autoregressive model. The parameters of this model are estimated with the aid of the generalized least-squares method. The seasonal component is modeled via a discrete model, where the weather sensitive cycle is separated from the weather insensitive one. A linear regression model is further proposed in order to associate weather sensitive variations with the exogenous weather variable (temperature). This procedure enabled a simple and efficient convolution of all load components into a single forecasting model. The whole methodology is verified on a real-life example of the peak-load consumption within the power system of former Yugoslavia.

The main feature of the proposed model is the decomposition of weekly load observations into two independent components: trend line and seasonal variations. The trend line is described by the combination of the polynomial regression and the first-order autoregressive model. The parameters of this model are estimated with the aid of the generalized least-squares method. The seasonal component is modeled via a discrete model, where the weather sensitive cycle is separated from the weather insensitive one. A linear regression model is further proposed in order to associate weather sensitive variations with the exogenous weather variable (temperature). This procedure enabled a simple and efficient convolution of all load components into a single forecasting model. The whole methodology is verified on a real-life example of the peak-load consumption within the power system of former Yugoslavia.

The model consists of straight channels, porous gas diffusion layers, porous catalyst layers and a membrane. In this computational domain, most of the transport phenomena which govern the performance of the PEM fuel cell are dealt with in detail. The model solves the convective and diffusive transport of the gaseous phase in the fuel cell and allows prediction of the concentration of the species present. A special feature of the model is a method that allows detailed modelling and prediction of electrode kinetics. The transport of electrons in the gas diffusion layer and catalyst layer is accounted for, as well as the transport of protons in the membrane and catalyst layer. This provides the possibility of predicting the three-dimensional distribution of the activation overpotential in the catalyst layer. The current density dependency on the gas concentration and activation overpotential can thereby be addressed. The proposed model makes it possible to predict the effect of geometrical and material properties on the fuel cell’s performance. It is shown how the ionic conductivity and porosity of the catalyst layer affects the distribution of current density and further how this affects the polarization curve. The porosity and conductivity of the catalyst layer are some of the most difficult parameters to measure, estimate and especially control. Yet the proposed model shows how these two parameters can have significant influence on the performance of the fuel cell. The two parameters are shown to be key elements in adjusting the three-dimensional model to fit measured polarization curves. Results from the proposed model are compared to single cell measurements on a test MEA from IRD Fuel Cells.

Their potential may be further extended by using them in combination with injection of a dry sorbent to remove acid gases and other chemical contaminants. A crucial factor in their successful utilisation is the ability of the cleaning pulse to remove the deposited cake effectively from the filter surface. In this study, laboratory experiments have been carried out using a single ceramic candle filter. The non-steady-state behaviour of the filter in the initial period of filtration was followed. ‘Patchy’ cleaning of the filter was observed and is consequently identified as the major cause of the inefficiency of filter cleaning indicated by the measured residual pressure drops. A simple correlation has been proposed to determine the cleaned fraction from pressure differences as a measure of the efficiency of cleaning. The conditioning curves have been successfully simulated using a recently developed probabilistic model and it has been shown that the model can also be applied to simulate the experimental results obtained in a pilot plant operating at high temperatures. The modelling results are consistent with the experimental observation that patchy cleaning with a thin residual dust layer in the cleaned areas can explain the conditioning behaviour.

Three research groups used the same data set for the northwest Europe power market as input for their models. Under competitive conditions, the results coincide, but in the Cournot case, the predicted prices differed significantly. The Cournot equilibria are highly sensitive to assumptions about market design (whether timing of generation and transmission decisions is sequential or integrated) and expectations of generators regarding how their decisions affect transmission prices and fringe generation. Combustion on the grate plays akey-role in the analysis of these boilers and in this work a stand-alone code was used to provide inlet conditions for the CFD analysis. Modelpredictions were compared with available gas temperature and species concentration measurements showing good agreement. Modelpredictions were compared with available gas temperature and species concentration measurements showing good agreement. The control objective is to both minimise the economic cost of importing energy into the system as well as providing the service of smoothing the profile of the electrical energy imported thus levelling the load and reducing peak demand. The capabilities of the approach are demonstrated by its application to a representative case study based on two buildings at the University of Manchester. Results show that model predictive control is capable of simultaneously addressing minimisation of economic cost as well as smoothing the electrical energy import.

An analysis is presented on the consequences of integrating embodied impacts into the assessment of the environmental advantageousness of net-zero concepts. Fundamental issues needing consideration in the design process - based on the evaluation of primary energy use and related greenhouse gas emissions - are examined by comparing three net-zero building design and assessment cases: (1) no embodied impacts included, net balance limited to the operation stage only; (2) embodied impacts included but evaluated separately from the operation stage; and (3) embodied impacts included with the operation stage in a life cycle approach. A review of recent developments in research, standardization activities and design practice and the presentation of a case study of a residential building in Norway highlight the critical importance of performance indicator definitions and system boundaries. A practical checklist is presented to guide the process of incorporating embodied impacts across the building life cycle phases in net-zero design. Its implications are considered on overall environmental impact assessment of buildings. Research and development challenges, as well as recommendations for designers and other stakeholders, are identified.

The main feature of the proposed model is the decomposition of weekly load observations into two independent components: trend line and seasonal variations. The trend line is described by the combination of the polynomial regression and the first-order autoregressive model. The parameters of this model are estimated with the aid of the generalized least-squares method. The seasonal component is modeled via a discrete model, where the weather sensitive cycle is separated from the weather insensitive one. A linear regression model is further proposed in order to associate weather sensitive variations with the exogenous weather variable (temperature). This procedure enabled a simple and efficient convolution of all load components into a single forecasting model. The whole methodology is verified on a real-life example of the peak-load consumption within the power system of former Yugoslavia.

The model consists of straight channels, porous gas diffusion layers, porous catalyst layers and a membrane. In this computational domain, most of the transport phenomena which govern the performance of the PEM fuel cell are dealt with in detail. The model solves the convective and diffusive transport of the gaseous phase in the fuel cell and allows prediction of the concentration of the species present. A special feature of the model is a method that allows detailed modelling and prediction of electrode kinetics. The transport of electrons in the gas diffusion layer and catalyst layer is accounted for, as well as the transport of protons in the membrane and catalyst layer. This provides the possibility of predicting the three-dimensional distribution of the activation overpotential in the catalyst layer. The current density dependency on the gas concentration and activation overpotential can thereby be addressed. The proposed model makes it possible to predict the effect of geometrical and material properties on the fuel cell’s performance. It is shown how the ionic conductivity and porosity of the catalyst layer affects the distribution of current density and further how this affects the polarization curve. The porosity and conductivity of the catalyst layer are some of the most difficult parameters to measure, estimate and especially control. Yet the proposed model shows how these two parameters can have significant influence on the performance of the fuel cell. The two parameters are shown to be key elements in adjusting the three-dimensional model to fit measured polarization curves. Results from the proposed model are compared to single cell measurements on a test MEA from IRD Fuel Cells.

Their potential may be further extended by using them in combination with injection of a dry sorbent to remove acid gases and other chemical contaminants. A crucial factor in their successful utilisation is the ability of the cleaning pulse to remove the deposited cake effectively from the filter surface. In this study, laboratory experiments have been carried out using a single ceramic candle filter. The non-steady-state behaviour of the filter in the initial period of filtration was followed. ‘Patchy’ cleaning of the filter was observed and is consequently identified as the major cause of the inefficiency of filter cleaning indicated by the measured residual pressure drops. A simple correlation has been proposed to determine the cleaned fraction from pressure differences as a measure of the efficiency of cleaning. The conditioning curves have been successfully simulated using a recently developed probabilistic model and it has been shown that the model can also be applied to simulate the experimental results obtained in a pilot plant operating at high temperatures. The modelling results are consistent with the experimental observation that patchy cleaning with a thin residual dust layer in the cleaned areas can explain the conditioning behaviour.

Three research groups used the same data set for the northwest Europe power market as input for their models. Under competitive conditions, the results coincide, but in the Cournot case, the predicted prices differed significantly. The Cournot equilibria are highly sensitive to assumptions about market design (whether timing of generation and transmission decisions is sequential or integrated) and expectations of generators regarding how their decisions affect transmission prices and fringe generation. Combustion on the grate plays akey-role in the analysis of these boilers and in this work a stand-alone code was used to provide inlet conditions for the CFD analysis. Modelpredictions were compared with available gas temperature and species concentration measurements showing good agreement. Combustionof biomass in grate-based boilers is often associated with high emission levels and relatively high amounts of unburnt carbon in the fly ash.Based on the CFD analysis, it is suggested that poor mixing in the furnace is a key issue leading to these problems. q 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Combustion on the grate plays akey-role in the analysis of these boilers and in this work a stand-alone code was used to provide inlet conditions for the CFD analysis. Modelpredictions were compared with available gas temperature and species concentration measurements showing good agreement. Combustionof biomass in grate-based boilers is often associated with high emission levels and relatively high amounts of unburnt carbon in the fly ash.Based on the CFD analysis, it is suggested that poor mixing in the furnace is a key issue leading to these problems. q 2003 Elsevier Ltd.
