    This report presents an analysis of sensors data leading to an initial assessment of the power performance from sea trails of the DEXA D05 Wave Energy Converter (WEC). The sea trails where performed approx. 1 nautical mile offshore from Hanstholm, Denmark during 2011. The converter was 1:5 scale model of the planned full scale DEXA WEC with a hydraulic Power Take Off (PTO). The converter had sensors to measure mooring forces, motions, as well as pressure and displacement sensors in the PTOs. The report gives the calculated power production efficiency and an analysis of the mooring forces. The DEXA D05 WEC was built, deployed and operated by the client DEXAWAVE ApS and the analysis of the sensor data, given here, has been carried out by John Lavelle under supervision by Jens Peter Kofoed in the Wave Energy Research Group at the department of Civil Engineering, Aalborg University (AAU).

    Purpose: Sustainability is one of the major key terms in our modern globalized world affected by such different but nevertheless closely interrelated issues like prosperity of worldwide trade, globally-spanning supply chains, the growing social gap and the threatening effects of climate change. The paper shows how responsible citizenship and reflective critical thinking as well as a deeper understanding of these complex interdependencies can be conveyed in a systematic way to a group of international business students in form of a one-week block seminar course in the CEMS Master-in-International-Management (MIM) program.Design/methodology/approach: The paper includes a discussion of proven course design, general key skills fostered, didactic approaches and methods employed along with feedback mechanisms and evaluation results demonstrating clearly its impact on student’s mind sets afterwards.Findings: Based on the discussions with our students and post-course reflective reports it turned out, that for many of them their perception of sustainability issues and of their own behaviour has changed during this single week because of the topics dealt with in our course.Practical implications: A well thought-out didactic approach and extraordinary commitment and dedication by the instructors is inevitable to ensure the success of such a course.Original/value: This paper explains in a compact way, how sustainability issues in global supply chain management can be tackled successfully even in such time restricted one-week block seminar. Purpose: Sustainability is one of the major key terms in our modern globalized world affected by such different but nevertheless closely interrelated issues like prosperity of worldwide trade, globally-spanning supply chains, the growing social gap and the threatening effects of climate change.     Intermittence and variability of renewable resources have substantial impacts on the scheduling of energy systems. Multi carrier energy sestem concept suggests undeniable benefits to energy systems by providing the flexibility to tackle with the uncertain nature of renewable energy resources. Toward this goal, this paper aims to investigate the advantages of deploying energy storage systems in a wind integrated multi carrier energy system for investigating renewable penetration and decreasing cost operation. A linear two-stage probabilistic methodology is imploied to cover the stochastic nature of renewable and energy loads. An effective SCENRED methodology is implemented to decrease the size of the mathematical model. Finally, the results obtained from the case studies show the effectiveness of the presented system.

    The paper presents the preliminary results of new physical tests carried out in the directional wave basin of Aalborg University (DK). The devices under exams are two floating 7 Degrees of Freedom Wave Activated Bodies moored with a spread system composed by 4 steel chains. The devices were subject to ordinary North Sea wave climate conditions and deployed in 1:60 scale. The main purpose of this paper is to analyse the performance of a Wave Energy Converter considering the interdependencies among energy production, loads on real moorings and device movements. The mooring effects on power production and on device movements are specifically investigated by varying the chain pre-tension level. Results suggest that the power production optimization is achieved with a slack mooring system providing a quasi-static response to the ordinary wave attacks

    In this chapter, we argue that foundations have a huge untapped potential to contribute to addressing the great social challenges of our time. Foundations in effect are private providers of public goods and therefore combine private sector initiative with social purpose. However, realizing this potential requires freeing foundations from some of the canonical limitations of contemporary foundation law, in particular the strict separation between philanthropy and business, which authorities in many countries zealously enforce. Allowing enterprise foundations (foundation ownership of business companies) as the majority of Nordic countries do will enable foundations to exercise benevolent long-term ownership of business companies while contributing a steady source of funding for sustainable development through donations and operating philanthropy. We outline the regulation necessary to make the structure work, including a central foundation regulator operating at arms’ length distance to the political system, full disclosure of philanthropy and ownership ties, audited accounts and good governance including independent boards.

    The backlog of people living without access to electricity is still significant in many developing countries around the globe. Grid-tied and off-grid solutions, with a myriad of technology options associated with each of these, provide an opportunity for these countries to close the gap. It provides a capability to leapfrog the development of electricity infrastructure via innovative solutions to enable electricity access to the majority of the population. Many of the countries also have abundant energy resources available to them, such as solar, hydro and wind, however invariably the cost of creating the associated assets, and operating and maintaining them in the remote rural communities, remains a challenge.Optimal technical solutions as suggested in the brochure, accompanied by stable political, regulatory and market platforms, provide the essential mix to facilitate the rollout of rural electrification programs across the globe. The integration of growing shares of renewable energy sources will also contribute to the overall reduction of carbon emissions, whilst expanding the rural electrification footprint in the world.

Grid-tied and off-grid solutions, with a myriad of technology options associated with each of these, provide an opportunity for these countries to close the gap. It provides a capability to leapfrog the development of electricity infrastructure via innovative solutions to enable electricity access to the majority of the population. Many of the countries also have abundant energy resources available to them, such as solar, hydro and wind, however invariably the cost of creating the associated assets, and operating and maintaining them in the remote rural communities, remains a challenge.Optimal technical solutions as suggested in the brochure, accompanied by stable political, regulatory and market platforms, provide the essential mix to facilitate the rollout of rural electrification programs across the globe. The integration of growing shares of renewable energy sources will also contribute to the overall reduction of carbon emissions, whilst expanding the rural electrification footprint in the world.

    The research work presented here consists of 5 years of integrated research conducted at 2 research groups at University of Life Science, Ås by Oslo and at Aalborg University, Department of Energy Technology. It consists of lab. scale trials, tests at full scale biogas installations as well as field surveys, including implementation steps. Feedstock’s for biogas plants consists of a broad variety of biological materials. The focus of the research work lays, where the resource base are tremendous big, and where the biomasses still has a large negative environmental pressure on the surrounding natural areas. This can be release of greenhouse gasses or by leaching nitrate or phosphorous to the water environment. Animal manure recycled at the wrong time and the wrong place during the year still has a huge negative impact on the water environment all over Europe. Closing this cycle means 9-12 month storage facilities, and often a better greenhouse gas balance by integration anaerobic digestion and thereby tapping the biogas from the easy digestible organic feedstocks. Manure in combination with lignocellulosic biomasses like straw, fibres-byproducts and grass-types will increase the biogas production carbon-nitrogen robustness remarkably. But to make a higher value out of lignocellulose as feedstock, there is a need for introducing the right pre-treatment methods. Mechanical – Physical and/or Chemical pretreament of lignocellulosic biomasses undergo these years remarkable research and implementation steps. To deconstruct the cellulosehemicellulose-lignin complex needs pretreatment methods, where mechanical deconstruction, along different kinds of “pressure cooking” and hydrolysis stems are in the focus. Various results will be showed, including biogas potentials in pretreated willow woodchips. The research groups have been discovering new feedstock’s from field surveys, specifically all kinds of permanent grassland types from natur concervation areas. These biomass types will be increasing the coming decades for natur concervation purposes. Scrublands where non-wanted vegetation are increasing, due to low numbers of animals for nature conservations form the segment of sheep’s and cattle’s are increasing. These non-easy fermentable biomasses need the deconstruction steps to be valuable feedstock’s in conjunction with manure types. A well composed mixture of these heterogeneous biomasses can comprise as 90-100% of the feedstock composition for high yielding biogas production. Several examples from our research will be documented, like surveys of permanent grasslands resources. Lab scale and full scale testing of grassland feedstock’s, gas potentials and full scale biogas yields. Trials of willow tree woodchips and wheat straw pre-treatment methods of the “pressure cooking “ types. Trials for process analytical technology (PAT) improvements have been documented at full scale biogas plants of how to monitor input feedstock concentration as TS – VS concentrations by on-line measurements. The gained results are promising. The R&D&D work demonstrated at the integrated biogas test-centre facilities and at biogas development full scale platforms are by purpose to develop the biogas sector in an even more sustainable direction. Better carbon footprint and socio-economical results for the society investments in the biogas sectors, where cheap and environmental friendly methods, to be developed, are solving mutual problems. Recycling the products to highly needed society products as power, heat or transportation fuels in the integrated RES-sectors and as highly valuable bio fertilizers moving nitrogen and phosphorous from unwanted areas to food production areas.

Various results will be showed, including biogas potentials in pretreated willow woodchips. The research groups have been discovering new feedstock’s from field surveys, specifically all kinds of permanent grassland types from natur concervation areas. These biomass types will be increasing the coming decades for natur concervation purposes. Scrublands where non-wanted vegetation are increasing, due to low numbers of animals for nature conservations form the segment of sheep’s and cattle’s are increasing. These non-easy fermentable biomasses need the deconstruction steps to be valuable feedstock’s in conjunction with manure types. A well composed mixture of these heterogeneous biomasses can comprise as 90-100% of the feedstock composition for high yielding biogas production. Several examples from our research will be documented, like surveys of permanent grasslands resources. Lab scale and full scale testing of grassland feedstock’s, gas potentials and full scale biogas yields. Trials of willow tree woodchips and wheat straw pre-treatment methods of the “pressure cooking “ types. Trials for process analytical technology (PAT) improvements have been documented at full scale biogas plants of how to monitor input feedstock concentration as TS – VS concentrations by on-line measurements. The gained results are promising. The R&D&D work demonstrated at the integrated biogas test-centre facilities and at biogas development full scale platforms are by purpose to develop the biogas sector in an even more sustainable direction. Better carbon footprint and socio-economical results for the society investments in the biogas sectors, where cheap and environmental friendly methods, to be developed, are solving mutual problems. Recycling the products to highly needed society products as power, heat or transportation fuels in the integrated RES-sectors and as highly valuable bio fertilizers moving nitrogen and phosphorous from unwanted areas to food production areas.

    This report presents an analysis of sensors data leading to an initial assessment of the power performance from sea trails of the DEXA D05 Wave Energy Converter (WEC). The sea trails where performed approx. 1 nautical mile offshore from Hanstholm, Denmark during 2011. The converter was 1:5 scale model of the planned full scale DEXA WEC with a hydraulic Power Take Off (PTO). The converter had sensors to measure mooring forces, motions, as well as pressure and displacement sensors in the PTOs. The report gives the calculated power production efficiency and an analysis of the mooring forces. The DEXA D05 WEC was built, deployed and operated by the client DEXAWAVE ApS and the analysis of the sensor data, given here, has been carried out by John Lavelle under supervision by Jens Peter Kofoed in the Wave Energy Research Group at the department of Civil Engineering, Aalborg University (AAU).

    Purpose: Sustainability is one of the major key terms in our modern globalized world affected by such different but nevertheless closely interrelated issues like prosperity of worldwide trade, globally-spanning supply chains, the growing social gap and the threatening effects of climate change. The paper shows how responsible citizenship and reflective critical thinking as well as a deeper understanding of these complex interdependencies can be conveyed in a systematic way to a group of international business students in form of a one-week block seminar course in the CEMS Master-in-International-Management (MIM) program.Design/methodology/approach: The paper includes a discussion of proven course design, general key skills fostered, didactic approaches and methods employed along with feedback mechanisms and evaluation results demonstrating clearly its impact on student’s mind sets afterwards.Findings: Based on the discussions with our students and post-course reflective reports it turned out, that for many of them their perception of sustainability issues and of their own behaviour has changed during this single week because of the topics dealt with in our course.Practical implications: A well thought-out didactic approach and extraordinary commitment and dedication by the instructors is inevitable to ensure the success of such a course.Original/value: This paper explains in a compact way, how sustainability issues in global supply chain management can be tackled successfully even in such time restricted one-week block seminar.     Intermittence and variability of renewable resources have substantial impacts on the scheduling of energy systems. Multi carrier energy sestem concept suggests undeniable benefits to energy systems by providing the flexibility to tackle with the uncertain nature of renewable energy resources. Toward this goal, this paper aims to investigate the advantages of deploying energy storage systems in a wind integrated multi carrier energy system for investigating renewable penetration and decreasing cost operation. A linear two-stage probabilistic methodology is imploied to cover the stochastic nature of renewable and energy loads. An effective SCENRED methodology is implemented to decrease the size of the mathematical model. Finally, the results obtained from the case studies show the effectiveness of the presented system.

    Intermittence and variability of renewable resources have substantial impacts on the scheduling of energy systems. Multi carrier energy sestem concept suggests undeniable benefits to energy systems by providing the flexibility to tackle with the uncertain nature of renewable energy resources. Toward this goal, this paper aims to investigate the advantages of deploying energy storage systems in a wind integrated multi carrier energy system for investigating renewable penetration and decreasing cost operation. A linear two-stage probabilistic methodology is imploied to cover the stochastic nature of renewable and energy loads. An effective SCENRED methodology is implemented to decrease the size of the mathematical model. Finally, the results obtained from the case studies show the effectiveness of the presented system.

    The paper presents the preliminary results of new physical tests carried out in the directional wave basin of Aalborg University (DK). The devices under exams are two floating 7 Degrees of Freedom Wave Activated Bodies moored with a spread system composed by 4 steel chains. The devices were subject to ordinary North Sea wave climate conditions and deployed in 1:60 scale. The main purpose of this paper is to analyse the performance of a Wave Energy Converter considering the interdependencies among energy production, loads on real moorings and device movements. The mooring effects on power production and on device movements are specifically investigated by varying the chain pre-tension level. Results suggest that the power production optimization is achieved with a slack mooring system providing a quasi-static response to the ordinary wave attacks

    In this chapter, we argue that foundations have a huge untapped potential to contribute to addressing the great social challenges of our time. Foundations in effect are private providers of public goods and therefore combine private sector initiative with social purpose. However, realizing this potential requires freeing foundations from some of the canonical limitations of contemporary foundation law, in particular the strict separation between philanthropy and business, which authorities in many countries zealously enforce. Allowing enterprise foundations (foundation ownership of business companies) as the majority of Nordic countries do will enable foundations to exercise benevolent long-term ownership of business companies while contributing a steady source of funding for sustainable development through donations and operating philanthropy. We outline the regulation necessary to make the structure work, including a central foundation regulator operating at arms’ length distance to the political system, full disclosure of philanthropy and ownership ties, audited accounts and good governance including independent boards.

    The backlog of people living without access to electricity is still significant in many developing countries around the globe. Grid-tied and off-grid solutions, with a myriad of technology options associated with each of these, provide an opportunity for these countries to close the gap. It provides a capability to leapfrog the development of electricity infrastructure via innovative solutions to enable electricity access to the majority of the population. Many of the countries also have abundant energy resources available to them, such as solar, hydro and wind, however invariably the cost of creating the associated assets, and operating and maintaining them in the remote rural communities, remains a challenge.Optimal technical solutions as suggested in the brochure, accompanied by stable political, regulatory and market platforms, provide the essential mix to facilitate the rollout of rural electrification programs across the globe. The integration of growing shares of renewable energy sources will also contribute to the overall reduction of carbon emissions, whilst expanding the rural electrification footprint in the world.

    The research work presented here consists of 5 years of integrated research conducted at 2 research groups at University of Life Science, Ås by Oslo and at Aalborg University, Department of Energy Technology. It consists of lab. scale trials, tests at full scale biogas installations as well as field surveys, including implementation steps. Feedstock’s for biogas plants consists of a broad variety of biological materials. The focus of the research work lays, where the resource base are tremendous big, and where the biomasses still has a large negative environmental pressure on the surrounding natural areas. This can be release of greenhouse gasses or by leaching nitrate or phosphorous to the water environment. Animal manure recycled at the wrong time and the wrong place during the year still has a huge negative impact on the water environment all over Europe. Closing this cycle means 9-12 month storage facilities, and often a better greenhouse gas balance by integration anaerobic digestion and thereby tapping the biogas from the easy digestible organic feedstocks. Manure in combination with lignocellulosic biomasses like straw, fibres-byproducts and grass-types will increase the biogas production carbon-nitrogen robustness remarkably. But to make a higher value out of lignocellulose as feedstock, there is a need for introducing the right pre-treatment methods. Mechanical – Physical and/or Chemical pretreament of lignocellulosic biomasses undergo these years remarkable research and implementation steps. To deconstruct the cellulosehemicellulose-lignin complex needs pretreatment methods, where mechanical deconstruction, along different kinds of “pressure cooking” and hydrolysis stems are in the focus. Various results will be showed, including biogas potentials in pretreated willow woodchips. The research groups have been discovering new feedstock’s from field surveys, specifically all kinds of permanent grassland types from natur concervation areas. These biomass types will be increasing the coming decades for natur concervation purposes. Scrublands where non-wanted vegetation are increasing, due to low numbers of animals for nature conservations form the segment of sheep’s and cattle’s are increasing. These non-easy fermentable biomasses need the deconstruction steps to be valuable feedstock’s in conjunction with manure types. A well composed mixture of these heterogeneous biomasses can comprise as 90-100% of the feedstock composition for high yielding biogas production. Several examples from our research will be documented, like surveys of permanent grasslands resources. Lab scale and full scale testing of grassland feedstock’s, gas potentials and full scale biogas yields. Trials of willow tree woodchips and wheat straw pre-treatment methods of the “pressure cooking “ types. Trials for process analytical technology (PAT) improvements have been documented at full scale biogas plants of how to monitor input feedstock concentration as TS – VS concentrations by on-line measurements. The gained results are promising. The R&D&D work demonstrated at the integrated biogas test-centre facilities and at biogas development full scale platforms are by purpose to develop the biogas sector in an even more sustainable direction. Better carbon footprint and socio-economical results for the society investments in the biogas sectors, where cheap and environmental friendly methods, to be developed, are solving mutual problems. Recycling the products to highly needed society products as power, heat or transportation fuels in the integrated RES-sectors and as highly valuable bio fertilizers moving nitrogen and phosphorous from unwanted areas to food production areas.

    The research work presented here consists of 5 years of integrated research conducted at 2 research groups at University of Life Science, Ås by Oslo and at Aalborg University, Department of Energy Technology. It consists of lab. scale trials, tests at full scale biogas installations as well as field surveys, including implementation steps. Feedstock’s for biogas plants consists of a broad variety of biological materials. The focus of the research work lays, where the resource base are tremendous big, and where the biomasses still has a large negative environmental pressure on the surrounding natural areas. This can be release of greenhouse gasses or by leaching nitrate or phosphorous to the water environment. Animal manure recycled at the wrong time and the wrong place during the year still has a huge negative impact on the water environment all over Europe. Closing this cycle means 9-12 month storage facilities, and often a better greenhouse gas balance by integration anaerobic digestion and thereby tapping the biogas from the easy digestible organic feedstocks. Manure in combination with lignocellulosic biomasses like straw, fibres-byproducts and grass-types will increase the biogas production carbon-nitrogen robustness remarkably. But to make a higher value out of lignocellulose as feedstock, there is a need for introducing the right pre-treatment methods. Mechanical – Physical and/or Chemical pretreament of lignocellulosic biomasses undergo these years remarkable research and implementation steps. To deconstruct the cellulosehemicellulose-lignin complex needs pretreatment methods, where mechanical deconstruction, along different kinds of “pressure cooking” and hydrolysis stems are in the focus. Various results will be showed, including biogas potentials in pretreated willow woodchips. The research groups have been discovering new feedstock’s from field surveys, specifically all kinds of permanent grassland types from natur concervation areas.     We describe herein a new system for the preparation of autologous fibrin glue by means of ethanol. The system produces a good yield of fibrin glue with a high concentration of fibrinogen in a short period of time, making the glue an efficient hemostatic agent and surgical sealant, and autologous fibrin glue has the obvious advantages of safety from transmission of viral agents and from immunologic reactions.
