The paper presents an experimental study on the formation process of burden surface texture on the blast furnace throat and its influence on the radial distribution of gas flow. The study was performed with the application of blast furnaces equipped with a bell-type charging device using radio-isotope means for the control of burden surface texture (profile) and burden surface level, i.e., gamma locators for burden surface texture. The study was carried out under the conditions of an operating blast furnace in an iron and steel plant using a unique GEOTAPS system for automated control of geometric and temperature parameters of burden material surface on the blast furnace throat. The influence of the surface texture on the gas flow distribution was also investigated. The possibility of a self-stabilization effect for burden surface texture and gas flow in an operating blast furnace under suitable conditions was experimentally proven. As a result of the experimental study performed, four ways of energy-saving technology implementation were determined for the control of blast furnace melting based on the data on the burden surface texture and previously unknown regularities of surface layer formation of burden material on the throat of an operating blast furnace with a bell-type charging device. The main idea of the paper is the development of automated control for the radial distribution of burden material and gas flow using actual or predicted surface texture parameters as important intermediate factors that both describe the process and have a significant simultaneous influence on it.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the adsorption process of the bicomponent mixture of Tartrazine (Y5) and Brilliant Blue FCF (B1) dyes in a dynamic regime (fixed-bed column), using rice husks (RH) as adsorbent material. A 3-level response surface design of experiments was employed to evaluate the adsorption process of the dyes in the mixture at the following initial concentrations: 0.0216, 0.0739, 0.1261, 0.1477 (mmol L−1). The response surface analysis of the experimental design made it possible to identify a competitive adsorption of both dyes. RH had higher affinity for B1, although the adsorption capacity changed depending on the concentration of each dye in the mixture. The highest RH adsorption capacity was 3.4 mg g−1 for B1 and 1.45 mg g−1 for Y5, respectively, under a monocomponent condition. It was considered that the interactions in the mechanism proposed for the adsorption process occurred because of the formation of hydrogen bonds between the sulfonate groups of the dyes and the –OH groups present on the surface of the adsorbent. B1 had a higher affinity towards RH because it had one more sulfonate group than Y5. The multiple-response optimization results make it possible to recommend the use of RH beds with low concentrations of B1 and Y5 in the same feed.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy systems are one of the most widely deployed renewable technologies in the world. The efficiency of solar panels has been studied during the last few decades, and, to date, it has not been possible to displace the production of energy using crystalline silicon wafer-based technology whose efficiency has reached values around 26.1%. Moreover, using solar tracking PV systems has become a feasible alternative to increase the electric output of PV silicon technologies instead of using the conventional fixed PV installation on a flat or sloping surface. The following study has compared fixed and dual-axis sun-tracking PV panels in order to quantify the enhancement associated with the amount of energy harvested when using dual-axis tracking PV systems in the city of Manta, located in a coastal region of Ecuador. In order to carry out this study, an IoT monitoring system based on Raspberry Pi3 and Arduino platforms was used. Measurements of solar radiation (W/m2), light intensity (Lux), temperature (°C), short-circuit current (A), and open-circuit voltage (V) were taken every minute for both systems. The results prove that the dual-axis tracking PV system produces, on average, 19.62% more energy than the static PV system. These results present an 8.62% energy increase with respect to a previous study carried out in an equatorial region with similar characteristics to those of the city of Manta, where a one-axis tracking PV system was used.

Our research shows that there is a significant association between contingency measures and improvement in air quality, clean beaches and environmental noise reduction. On the other hand, there are also negative secondary aspects such as the reduction in recycling and the increase in waste, further endangering the contamination of physical spaces (water and land), in addition to air. Global economic activity is expected to return in the coming months in most countries (even if slowly), so decreasing GHG concentrations during a short period is not a sustainable way to clean up our environment.

It was established that for the numerical solution of thermal problems of heat transfer in the strip-roll system described by equations of unsteady heat conduction, the finite difference method is the most effective. For the further numerical solution of the problems of unsteady thermal conductivity of the strip and rolls during hot rolling, the sections of slabs and rolls were divided by a conditional mesh. Energy balance equations with subsequent finite-difference Fourier approximation for possible options of the mesh nodes occurring in solving the two-dimensional problem of unsteady heat conduction.When solving the heat balance problems for both the strip and the rolls, the performed transformations make it possible to switch from solving the nonlinear heat conduction problem to solving the linearized problem. It was also shown that when calculating the thermal state of the active zone in which cyclic temperature changes occur during one revolution, it becomes possible to switch from solving a problem in a cylindrical coordinate system to solving it in a rectangular coordinate system. Transition to solving a one-dimensional strip-roll system greatly simplifies the calculation. The solution of the III boundary-value problem for the roll and comparison of the obtained results with the results of solutions for the strip-roll system enables the theoretical determination of the heat transfer coefficient in the deformation zone.The study results can be used to determine temperature and speed mode of cooling a thin strip during its rolling as well as set tasks for designing special equipment for accelerated cooling in a production stream of strip rolling mills

For this reason, knowing in detail the chemical process and the thermodynamics that accompany cracking reactions is of utmost importance. The present study aims to determine the thermodynamic parameters of the degradation process of conventional thermoplastics (polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) from the study of their chemical kinetics by thermogravimetric analysis (TG). Non-isothermal thermogravimetry was performed at three heating rates from room temperature to 550 °C with an inert nitrogen atmosphere with a flow of 20 mL min−1. Once the TG data is obtained, an analysis is carried out with the isoconversional models of Friedman (FR), Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS), and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) in order to determine the one that best fits the experimental data, and with this, the calculation of the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor is performed. The validation of the model was carried out using the correlation factor, determining that the KAS model is the one that best adjusts for the post-consumer thermoplastic degradation process at the three heating rates. With the use of the kinetic parameters, the variation of the Gibbs free energy is determined in each of the cases, where it is necessary that for structures containing aromatic groups a lower energy is presented, which implies a relative ease of degradation compared to the linear structures.

This article describes the results of a study of Ecuador’s energy status, using the system dynamics methodology to model supply, demand and CO2 emissions scenarios for the year 2030. Primary energy production increased in the different projected scenarios, with oil as the most important source of energy. The increase observed in final energy consumption was mainly associated with the transport and industry sectors. A reduction in energy intensity was projected for the different scenarios, which could be associated with the projected economic growth. The results obtained were used to build a proposal for energy policies aimed at mitigating emissions. The proposed changes to the national energy matrix could be the factors that will contribute most to the achievement of carbon emission reductions projected by the different scenarios; changes in the energy matrix are mainly associated with the development of projects to replace fossil fuels with renewable energies, mainly hydropower.

Solid-state lighting technology, such as LED devices, is critical to improving energy efficiency in street lighting systems. In Ecuador, government policies have established the obligation to exclusively use LED systems starting in 2023, except in special projects. Ecuador, known for its vast biodiversity, protects its national parks, which are rich in flora, fauna and natural resources, through international institutions and agreements such as UNESCO, CBD and CITES. Although reducing electrical consumption usually measures energy efficiency, this article goes further. It considers aspects such as the correlated color temperature in the lighting design of protected areas, light pollution and the decrease in energy quality due to harmonic distortion. Measurements of the electromagnetic spectrum of the light sources were made in an area in the Galápagos National Park of Ecuador, revealing highly correlated color temperatures that can affect ecosystem cycles. In addition, the investigation detected levels of light pollution increasing the night sky brightness and a notable presence of harmonic distortion in the electrical grid. Using simulations to predict the behavior of these variables offers an efficient option to help preserve protected environments and the quality of energy supply while promoting energy savings.

Para este propósito se determinaron los activos de información con sus posibles amenazas y el impacto que estas tendrían si se materializaran, luego se identificó las salvaguardas de los activos y se realizó la detección de vulnerabilidades en los servicios web mediante el uso de la herramienta gratuita VEGA. Finalmente, se determinó el nivel del riesgo que a futuro permitirá al personal de tecnologías tomar mejores decisiones. En el resultado del análisis de vulnerabilidades de los servicios web se identificaron como más frecuentes: SQL Injection, PHP Error Detected y Directory Listing Detected, entre otras, con lo que al aplicar el modelo propuesto se redujo un 87.87% las vulnerabilidades altas encontradas y se eliminaron el 12.13% de las mismas.

The paper presents an experimental study on the formation process of burden surface texture on the blast furnace throat and its influence on the radial distribution of gas flow. The study was performed with the application of blast furnaces equipped with a bell-type charging device using radio-isotope means for the control of burden surface texture (profile) and burden surface level, i.e., gamma locators for burden surface texture. The study was carried out under the conditions of an operating blast furnace in an iron and steel plant using a unique GEOTAPS system for automated control of geometric and temperature parameters of burden material surface on the blast furnace throat. The influence of the surface texture on the gas flow distribution was also investigated. The possibility of a self-stabilization effect for burden surface texture and gas flow in an operating blast furnace under suitable conditions was experimentally proven. As a result of the experimental study performed, four ways of energy-saving technology implementation were determined for the control of blast furnace melting based on the data on the burden surface texture and previously unknown regularities of surface layer formation of burden material on the throat of an operating blast furnace with a bell-type charging device. The main idea of the paper is the development of automated control for the radial distribution of burden material and gas flow using actual or predicted surface texture parameters as important intermediate factors that both describe the process and have a significant simultaneous influence on it.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the adsorption process of the bicomponent mixture of Tartrazine (Y5) and Brilliant Blue FCF (B1) dyes in a dynamic regime (fixed-bed column), using rice husks (RH) as adsorbent material. A 3-level response surface design of experiments was employed to evaluate the adsorption process of the dyes in the mixture at the following initial concentrations: 0.0216, 0.0739, 0.1261, 0.1477 (mmol L−1). The response surface analysis of the experimental design made it possible to identify a competitive adsorption of both dyes. RH had higher affinity for B1, although the adsorption capacity changed depending on the concentration of each dye in the mixture. The highest RH adsorption capacity was 3.4 mg g−1 for B1 and 1.45 mg g−1 for Y5, respectively, under a monocomponent condition. It was considered that the interactions in the mechanism proposed for the adsorption process occurred because of the formation of hydrogen bonds between the sulfonate groups of the dyes and the –OH groups present on the surface of the adsorbent. B1 had a higher affinity towards RH because it had one more sulfonate group than Y5. The multiple-response optimization results make it possible to recommend the use of RH beds with low concentrations of B1 and Y5 in the same feed.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy systems are one of the most widely deployed renewable technologies in the world. The efficiency of solar panels has been studied during the last few decades, and, to date, it has not been possible to displace the production of energy using crystalline silicon wafer-based technology whose efficiency has reached values around 26.1%. Moreover, using solar tracking PV systems has become a feasible alternative to increase the electric output of PV silicon technologies instead of using the conventional fixed PV installation on a flat or sloping surface. The following study has compared fixed and dual-axis sun-tracking PV panels in order to quantify the enhancement associated with the amount of energy harvested when using dual-axis tracking PV systems in the city of Manta, located in a coastal region of Ecuador. In order to carry out this study, an IoT monitoring system based on Raspberry Pi3 and Arduino platforms was used. Measurements of solar radiation (W/m2), light intensity (Lux), temperature (°C), short-circuit current (A), and open-circuit voltage (V) were taken every minute for both systems. The results prove that the dual-axis tracking PV system produces, on average, 19.62% more energy than the static PV system. These results present an 8.62% energy increase with respect to a previous study carried out in an equatorial region with similar characteristics to those of the city of Manta, where a one-axis tracking PV system was used.

Our research shows that there is a significant association between contingency measures and improvement in air quality, clean beaches and environmental noise reduction. On the other hand, there are also negative secondary aspects such as the reduction in recycling and the increase in waste, further endangering the contamination of physical spaces (water and land), in addition to air. It was established that for the numerical solution of thermal problems of heat transfer in the strip-roll system described by equations of unsteady heat conduction, the finite difference method is the most effective. For the further numerical solution of the problems of unsteady thermal conductivity of the strip and rolls during hot rolling, the sections of slabs and rolls were divided by a conditional mesh. Energy balance equations with subsequent finite-difference Fourier approximation for possible options of the mesh nodes occurring in solving the two-dimensional problem of unsteady heat conduction.When solving the heat balance problems for both the strip and the rolls, the performed transformations make it possible to switch from solving the nonlinear heat conduction problem to solving the linearized problem. It was also shown that when calculating the thermal state of the active zone in which cyclic temperature changes occur during one revolution, it becomes possible to switch from solving a problem in a cylindrical coordinate system to solving it in a rectangular coordinate system. Transition to solving a one-dimensional strip-roll system greatly simplifies the calculation. The solution of the III boundary-value problem for the roll and comparison of the obtained results with the results of solutions for the strip-roll system enables the theoretical determination of the heat transfer coefficient in the deformation zone.The study results can be used to determine temperature and speed mode of cooling a thin strip during its rolling as well as set tasks for designing special equipment for accelerated cooling in a production stream of strip rolling mills

For this reason, knowing in detail the chemical process and the thermodynamics that accompany cracking reactions is of utmost importance. The present study aims to determine the thermodynamic parameters of the degradation process of conventional thermoplastics (polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) from the study of their chemical kinetics by thermogravimetric analysis (TG). Non-isothermal thermogravimetry was performed at three heating rates from room temperature to 550 °C with an inert nitrogen atmosphere with a flow of 20 mL min−1. Once the TG data is obtained, an analysis is carried out with the isoconversional models of Friedman (FR), Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS), and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) in order to determine the one that best fits the experimental data, and with this, the calculation of the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor is performed. The validation of the model was carried out using the correlation factor, determining that the KAS model is the one that best adjusts for the post-consumer thermoplastic degradation process at the three heating rates. With the use of the kinetic parameters, the variation of the Gibbs free energy is determined in each of the cases, where it is necessary that for structures containing aromatic groups a lower energy is presented, which implies a relative ease of degradation compared to the linear structures.

This article describes the results of a study of Ecuador’s energy status, using the system dynamics methodology to model supply, demand and CO2 emissions scenarios for the year 2030. Primary energy production increased in the different projected scenarios, with oil as the most important source of energy. The increase observed in final energy consumption was mainly associated with the transport and industry sectors. A reduction in energy intensity was projected for the different scenarios, which could be associated with the projected economic growth. The results obtained were used to build a proposal for energy policies aimed at mitigating emissions. The proposed changes to the national energy matrix could be the factors that will contribute most to the achievement of carbon emission reductions projected by the different scenarios; changes in the energy matrix are mainly associated with the development of projects to replace fossil fuels with renewable energies, mainly hydropower.

Solid-state lighting technology, such as LED devices, is critical to improving energy efficiency in street lighting systems. In Ecuador, government policies have established the obligation to exclusively use LED systems starting in 2023, except in special projects. Ecuador, known for its vast biodiversity, protects its national parks, which are rich in flora, fauna and natural resources, through international institutions and agreements such as UNESCO, CBD and CITES. Although reducing electrical consumption usually measures energy efficiency, this article goes further. It considers aspects such as the correlated color temperature in the lighting design of protected areas, light pollution and the decrease in energy quality due to harmonic distortion. Measurements of the electromagnetic spectrum of the light sources were made in an area in the Galápagos National Park of Ecuador, revealing highly correlated color temperatures that can affect ecosystem cycles. In addition, the investigation detected levels of light pollution increasing the night sky brightness and a notable presence of harmonic distortion in the electrical grid. Using simulations to predict the behavior of these variables offers an efficient option to help preserve protected environments and the quality of energy supply while promoting energy savings.

Para este propósito se determinaron los activos de información con sus posibles amenazas y el impacto que estas tendrían si se materializaran, luego se identificó las salvaguardas de los activos y se realizó la detección de vulnerabilidades en los servicios web mediante el uso de la herramienta gratuita VEGA. Finalmente, se determinó el nivel del riesgo que a futuro permitirá al personal de tecnologías tomar mejores decisiones. En el resultado del análisis de vulnerabilidades de los servicios web se identificaron como más frecuentes: SQL Injection, PHP Error Detected y Directory Listing Detected, entre otras, con lo que al aplicar el modelo propuesto se redujo un 87.87% las vulnerabilidades altas encontradas y se eliminaron el 12.13% de las mismas.
