AbstractClimate change effects along with anthropogenic activities present the main factors that threaten the existence of heritage sites across the north Nile Delta of Egypt close to the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. Observing the changes in the landscape close to the archaeological sites is an important issue for decision‐makers in terms of reducing the negative impact of natural events and human activities. The coastal heritage sites are becoming strongly threatened by the rising sea level phenomena that will happen due to global warming. Focusing on the distribution of the archaeological sites, this study aims to detect the areas at risk of shoreline erosion or accretion in the northern shoreline of the Nile Delta. In this study, the changes in the northern shoreline of the Nile Delta were observed and calculated during the last hundred years based on the integration between the old topographic maps from surveys in 1900, 1925 and 1945, optical satellite images captured by Landsat in 1972, 1986 and 2000; Sentinel2 2021; and the Radar SRTM data. The results of this study showed that the changes were enormous with a great shoreline erosion process over the last 121 years recorded along the shoreline in the periods between 1900–1925, 1925–1945, 1945–1972, 1972–1986, 1986–2000 and 2000–2021. The areas eroded were about 5.3, 4.7, 5.6, 8.9, 2.5 and 5.4 km2, respectively. Such negative movements caused the loss of two heritage sites, and the expected changes will lead to the loss of additional heritage sites in the next 500 years. Furthermore, a model was suggested for protecting the coastal heritage sites threatened by the risk of submergence. This study can help the decision‐makers to detect the coastal archaeological sites at risk and create innovative solutions for protecting these irreplaceable heritage sites.

Electrochemical capacitors, called supercapacitors (SCs) or ultracapacitors, are devices conveniently used for embedded electrical energy management owing to their huge capacitance, low internal resistance and flexible control through power electronic conversion. This paper proposes a main power supply of hybrid Wind Generator (WG)–SC within the train station for feeding the traction onboard SC through specified limited feeding transit durations. Onboard SCs provide the train with the requested start–up self–energy. The hybrid WG–SCs system is an environmental–friendly source that enables the independency on national grid and guarantees an efficient bidirectional power transfer for energy management with enhanced dynamic performance. Therefore, the dynamic modelling and the experimental analysis of the modern hybrid WG–SCs used for managing the charge/discharge operation of SCs at Unity Power Factor (UPF) mode are presented. For this purpose, the Port–Controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) methodology is deduced and explicitly presented. Simulation results, via MATLAB™, reveal that the proposed PCH control methodology can be successfully implemented to ensure acceptable system dynamic behavior. Numerical results are validated with experimental measurements to investigate the significance of the PCH approach for the energy management operation in eco-tractions.

High performance DC/DC converters should be developed to connect the low-voltage PV system to the high voltage DC-bus. These converters are used to regulate the output voltage and current of the PV system, to control the power flow and to track the maximum power point of the PV system. With the indispensable advantages of Interleaved Boost Converter (IBC) such as increased power capacity, passive components size reduction and output voltage ripple cancellation, it can be considered as a superior solution for PV systems. Therefore, this paper investigates and analyzes a three-phase interleaved DC/DC converter to enhance the dynamic performance of the PV system. The paper intends to design and implement two complete models of the standalone and grid-connected PV systems using Matlab/Simulink software package. In this paper, the dynamic model of the PV is described in detail. The simulation results are provided.

The transformation of electricity network users from passive to active agents, as a result of decreasing costs of distributed energy resources, requires several adaptions, one of which is revising the distribution network charges. Often current network charge designs do not ensure network cost recovery and lack to incentivize efficient network investments and usage. New network charge methodologies are required to guide and incentivize customers in an efficient way while maximizing system economic efficiency. This paper proposes an efficient methodology that ensures network cost recovery while promoting efficient usage of the network as well as efficient network investments. The proposed network charge design consisting of two components: a peak coincidence network charge (PCNC) and fixed charge. The PCNC is a forward-looking charge as it considers the cost of future network reinforcements required and assigned to consumers during peak hours of the network utilization. Fixed charges allocate the residual of the network costs following Ramsey-pricing principles. This paper compares the outcome from economic optimum customers response to four different network charges: (i) volumetric charges (ii) fixed charges (iii) peak demand charge (iv) fixed charges + PCNC. Two case studies for two different load profiles are simulated using linear programming on Matlab to minimize their total costs within each charges design, considering the possibility of buying electricity from the grid and investing on onsite generation or curtail load. Finally, the paper highlights through the case studies how customer s response is highly influenced by different network charge designs, and compare the consequences of these responses in terms of network cost recovery and total system costs. The transformation of electricity network users from passive to active agents, as a result of decreasing costs of distributed energy resources, requires several adaptions, one of which is revising the distribution network charges. Often current network charge designs do not ensure network cost recovery and lack to incentivize efficient network investments and usage. New network charge methodologies are required to guide and incentivize customers in an efficient way while maximizing system economic efficiency. This paper proposes an efficient methodology that ensures network cost recovery while promoting efficient usage of the network as well as efficient network investments. The proposed network charge design consisting of two components: a peak coincidence network charge (PCNC) and fixed charge. The PCNC is a forward-looking charge as it considers the cost of future network reinforcements required and assigned to consumers during peak hours of the network utilization. Fixed charges allocate the residual of the network costs following Ramsey-pricing principles. This paper compares the outcome from economic optimum customers response to four different network charges: (i) volumetric charges (ii) fixed charges (iii) peak demand charge (iv) fixed charges + PCNC. Two case studies for two different load profiles are simulated using linear programming on Matlab to minimize their total costs within each charges design, considering the possibility of buying electricity from the grid and investing on onsite generation or curtail load. Finally, the paper highlights through the case studies how customer s response is highly influenced by different network charge designs, and compare the consequences of these responses in terms of network cost recovery and total system costs. In this work, a novel industrial configuration for the lipid extraction from sewage sludge was proposed. In detail, respect to conventional scheme based on direct extraction of lipids from wet sedimented sewage sludge using hexane, a preliminary centrifugation of sewage sludge prior to the extraction process was introduced. Economic and energetic balances for both configurations were evaluated using Aspen Plus simulator, including the post-treatment of exhausted sewage sludge obtained after the process. By centrifuging sewage sludge prior to the extraction process, overall costs can be reduced (27 % less), while preserving the same extraction efficiency for lipid recovery (80 %). Initial capital investments, amounts of reactants and total energy demand were sensibly reduced to achieve BEP of extracted lipids of 784 € ton-1 (vs 1.291 € ton-1 for conventional route). Finally, the economic feasibility of biodiesel production from lipids obtained from centrifuged sludge was evaluated by applying direct esterification with methanol and AlCl3·6H2O BEP of biodiesel produced of 1.186 € ton-1 was obtained with NPV of 27.5 M€ and DPP of 2.5 years. These values, show that biodiesel production from sewage sludge could be profitable considering only the proposed approach, fully unlocking the potential of waste in coherence with circular economy principles.

Abstract The paper presents experimental results regarding heat transfer behavior of a cylinder in cross pulsating flow and focuses on heat transfer characteristics enhancement obtained using a novel and peculiar type of pulsation technique able to generate variable pulsate signals with different frequencies. The pulsating flow tunnel features a square cross section of 200 mm x 200 mm and 1600 mm length, while the testing apparatus utilizes a station of normally closed (NC) solenoids and a vacuumed plenum chamber which can generate a time dependent flow inside the tunnel. Effects of pulsating frequency in the range 1-12 Hz and Reynolds number in the range 1.02-2.04*104 on convective heat transfer for both a horizontal and vertical heated cylinder are carried out. A cylindrical cartridge heater is embedded into the cylinder with two insulated ends to generate a constant heat flux of 33 W in all the experimental runs. The surface temperature of the cylinder was measured using an array of k-type thermocouples around the cylinder circumference and recorded in a real-time data logger. The results show that the measured velocity and convection heat transfer coefficient are very sensitive to the frequency of crossflow pulsation. In addition, the influence of pulsating frequency on the local and average of heat transfer coefficient is discussed in detail. Results also demonstrate that maximum enhancement in heat transfer for the horizontal and vertical setup occurs at a frequency of 9 Hz compared to steady forced convection, with 8.33% and 11.11% increment in heat transfer respectively.

Fault diagnosis and location play a pivotal role in expediting fault restoration and enhancing power system resilience. However, integrating distributed generation and diverse load profiles has led to more complicated distribution networks, intensifying fault diagnosis and location challenges. Hence, there is a need to transform traditional distribution networks into resilient active ones that actively guide and utilize distributed energy resources, possessing active control and operational capabilities. This paper comprehensively reviews fault diagnosis and location techniques in distribution networks, focusing on faulted line selection, fault section estimation, and accurate fault location. It provides an in-depth analysis of current fault diagnosis and location techniques, along with an assessment of their challenges, summarizing and evaluating the current research status at both local and international levels. To address existing fault diagnosis and location technologies limitations, a method utilizing micro-phasor measurement units (μPMUs) to enhance situational awareness and state estimation of active distribution networks is proposed. The paper also provides a comprehensive analysis of the optimized configuration strategy for achieving network observability and fault diagnosis using limited μPMU, in addition to comparing and analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of typical solution algorithms for the optimal PMU placement (OPP) problem. In response to extreme disturbance scenarios in active distribution networks, resilience enhancement strategies are proposed from three perspectives: fault prevention, fault response, and fault restoration. Finally, a summary and outlook on current research methods for fault diagnosis and location, as well as the challenges and future research directions in resilience enhancement strategies, are provided.

Fault diagnosis and location play a pivotal role in expediting fault restoration and enhancing power system resilience. However, integrating distributed generation and diverse load profiles has led to more complicated distribution networks, intensifying fault diagnosis and location challenges. Hence, there is a need to transform traditional distribution networks into resilient active ones that actively guide and utilize distributed energy resources, possessing active control and operational capabilities. This paper comprehensively reviews fault diagnosis and location techniques in distribution networks, focusing on faulted line selection, fault section estimation, and accurate fault location. It provides an in-depth analysis of current fault diagnosis and location techniques, along with an assessment of their challenges, summarizing and evaluating the current research status at both local and international levels. Abstract In this article, a synergy of Enhanced Heuristic Descent Gradient (EHDG) algorithm and Voronoi diagram is applied for the optimal planning of electrical Fast Charging Stations (FCSs) for electric buses. The proposed novel technique aims at achieving the optimal locations of charging stations based on route distributions, consumption profiles, and operating costs. The Enhanced Descent Gradient is applied to produce the optimal layout that is graphically represented by Voronoi diagram. A real world case study is presented to the bus network in city of Toronto to be replaced with electric buses that need electrical charging stations. The proposed technique is based on two incorporated stages: analyzing and estimating of the energy consumption of the bus network, then optimizing the allocation of charging stations to minimize the energy consumption and operating cost. The proposed technique is verified and compared with a well-established benchmark algorithm, which is particle swarm optimizer.

Plant extracts were obtained using solvents of different polarity (hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, ethanol/water, water) for selection the most optimal solvent for the extraction of active compounds. For instance, the extracts yielded total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the range of 12.13–45.67 mg GAE/g and 0.75–12.44 mg QE/g, respectively, while the total antioxidant capacity of the extracts determined by the phosphomolybdenum assay ranged from 0.88–2.53 mmol TE/g. HPLC/MS/MS analysis revealed 5‐caffeoylquinic acid (2.52–337.05 μg/g) and 3,5‐dicaffeoylquinic acid (3.12–299.36 μg/g) to be the major components present in the investigated extracts. Antioxidant activity in terms of radical scavenging ability of the extracts ranged from 0.82–45.56 mg TE/g in DPPH assay and from 5.07–104.58 mg TE/g in ABTS assay. The tested extracts were found to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (aerial part: 0.50–2.33 mg GALAE/g; roots: 0.40–2.43 mg GALAE/g), while with the exception of the water extracts, the other extracts showed butyrylcholinesterase inhibition (aerial part: 2.46–5.02 mg GALAE/g; root: 2.93–4.17 mg GALAE/g). Overall, this study presented an interesting scope of this species in phytomedicine with preliminary data demonstrating some of the tested extracts to possess high bioactive contents, antioxidant potential and enzyme inhibitory activity. Thus, additional investigations are necessary to confirm their safety in herbal drug applications.
