[EN] The objective of this article is to compare the behaviour of the most representative domestic hot water systems (DHW) in single-family buildings. The study evaluates the energy consumption, equivalent CO2 emissions and cost for each system over a 15-year life period. This analysis is carried out in four cli- matic zones across Europe to observe the influence of climatic conditions on the results. The four climatic zones are located in the cities of Athens, Madrid, London and Berlin. The analysed systems are: a) natural gas-fired instantaneous water heaters, b) electric storage water heater, c) solar thermal system with gas- fired instantaneous, d) solar thermal system with electric storage water heater, e) air-source heat pump, f) photovoltaic system with electric storage water heater, and g) photovoltaic system with air-source heat pump. This range of technologies covers the most likely solutions to be implemented across domestic buildings in Europe.The heat pump system (HPWH) with PV considering self-consumption shows the lowest environmen- tal impact in all zones, but is not an attractive investment in the coldest zones due to lower natural gas prices. Thermal solar systems have a high purchase and maintenance costs which do not compensate their energy savings. The PV HPWH system has a greater reduction of emissions and a lower cost than HPWH across a 15-year life. The gas boiler system has the lowest cost in a 15-year period in the coldest areas, despite having a greater environmental impact than the heat pump.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Filament seals, such as brush seals and leaf seals, are investigated as a potential improved seal for gas turbine applications. As these seals operate in contact with the rotor, a good understanding of their stiffness is required in order to minimize seal wear and degradation. This paper demonstrates that the filament and complete seal stiffness is affected in comparable magnitudes by mechanical and aerodynamic forces. In certain cases, the aerodynamic forces can also lead to an overall negative seal stiffness which may affect stable seal operation. In negative stiffness, the displacement of the seal or rotor into an eccentric position causes a resultant force, which, rather than restoring the rotor to a central position, acts to amplify its displacement. Insight into the forces acting on the seal filaments is gained by investigating a leaf seal, which consists of a pack of thin planar leaves arranged around the rotor, with coverplates on either side of the leaf pack, offset from the pack surfaces. The leaf seal is chosen due to its geometry being more suitable for analysis compared to alternative filament seals such as the brush seal. Data from two experimental campaigns are presented which show a seal exhibiting negative stiffness and a seal exhibiting a stiffness reduction due to aerodynamic effects. An empirical model for the forces acting on leaf filaments is developed based on the experimental data, which allows separation of mechanical and aerodynamic forces. In addition a numerical model is developed to analyze the flow approaching the leaf pack and the interleaf flow, which gives an insight into the causes of the aerodynamic forces. Using the empirical and numerical models together, a full picture of the forces affecting leaf stiffness is created. Validation of the models is achieved by successfully predicting seal stiffness for a further data set across the full range of operating conditions. The understanding of aerodynamic forces and their impact on filament and seal stiffness allows for their consideration in leaf seal design. A qualitative assessment of how they may be used to improve seal operation in filament seals is given.

Garrido; Caterina Summonte; Stefan Janz;The optical and photovoltaic properties of Si NCs / SiC multilayers (MLs) are investigated using a membrane-based solar cell structure. By removing the Si substrate in the active cell area, the MLs are studied without any bulk Si substrate contribution. The occurrence is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and light-beam induced current mapping . Optical characterization combined with simulations allows us to determine the absorption within the ML absorber layer, isolated from the other cell stack layers. The results indicate that the absorption at wavelengths longer than 800 nm is only due to the SiC matrix. The measured short-circuit current is significantly lower than that theoretically obtained from absorption within the ML absorber, which is ascribed to losses that limit carrier extraction. The origin of these losses is discussed in terms of the material regions where recombination takes place. Our results indicate that carrier extraction is most efficient from the Si NCs themselves, whereas recombination is strongest in SiC and residual a-Si domains . Together with the observed onset of the external quantum efficiency (EQE) at 700-800 nm, this fact is an evidence of quantum confinement in Si NCs embedded in SiC on device level.

Accordingly, battery research and development (R&D) efforts have been increased considerably over the past decades, particularly regarding materials and cell chemistries to further improve the electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries. The impetus behind such massive R&D has been the replacement of metallic lithium anodes, a notorious for potentially catastrophic shorting by lithium metal dendrites. However, despite the promise of a step improvement in energy density outperforming established LIB technology, the commercial introduction of cells with alternative anode materials in the mass market is slow. Against this backdrop, the aim of the present study is to provide an overview of current developments in the academic and industrial research arena, summarising the historical development of scientific literature and patent landscape beyond established anode materials. The study identifies and critically reviews tin, silicon, silicon oxide, aluminium and titanium-based anode materials as promising pathways to develop high-energy density next-generation LIBs.

These temperatures represent an indication of the potential of the thermal resource in the oceanic territory of Panama and could generate benefits for the success and stability of the national economy facing the current and growing challenges of the society. The OTEC technology is promising for countries located in tropical regions, where sea temperature differentials are ideal for efficient operability. Currently, this technology has low efficiency levels. Therefore, to evaluate its possible implementation in Panama, a theoretical thermodynamic analysis has been carried out. An organic Rankine cycle (ORC) simulation for the net production of 100KW was performed. It considered the temperature differentials of the oceanography of Panama and used refrigerants R717 and R134a as working fluids. Considering the database of Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PODAAC) for the year 2018, the ocean territory of Panama in the Gulf of Chiriqui reflects seawater surface temperatures (SST) of approximately 27.5 °C to almost 29.5 °C. Besides these values they do not reflect representative anomalies in the critical points with respect to the seasons of the year. The importance of the study in this area is its proximity to the deep cold sea waters, considering the Panama bathymetry map, since its SST are not very variable through the year or through the territory?

Machine learning studies in the field of renewable energy are analysed here (REML). So, from 2012 to 2021, we looked at the publication tendencies (PT) and bibliometric analysis (BA) of REML research that was indexed by Elsevier Scopus. Key insights into the research landscape, scientific discoveries, and technological advancement were revealed by BA, while PT highlighted REML's important players, top cited papers, and financing organisations. In total, the PT discovered 1,218 works, 397 of which were conference papers and 106 were reviews. Because it spans the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, REML research is exhaustive, varied, and consequential. The most productive researchers, countries, and sponsors include Ravinesh C. Deo, the United States' National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and China's National Natural Science Foundation. Journal prestige and open access are valued by contributors, as seen by the success of Applied Energy and Energies. Productivity among REML's key stakeholders is boosted by collaborations and research funding. Keyword co-occurrence analysis was used to categorise REML research into four broad topic areas: systems, technologies, tools/technologies, and socio-technical dynamics. According to the results, ML plays a crucial role in the prediction, operation, and optimisation of RET as well as the design and development of RE-related materials.

Abstract Level(s) is a common European Union framework of core sustainability indicators for measuring the performance of buildings along their life cycle, enabling emissions reductions and circular resource flows. A fundamental tool for the development of European policies to boost the market for sustainable, resilient and climate change adapted buildings. The objective of this study is to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in the field of sustainable building research, through the definition of strategies to adopt Level(s) for bringing buildings into the Circular Economy. For this reason, a triple SWOT-Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP)-TOWS analysis was applied. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of the Level(s) have been identified in relation to the availability of resources, product quality, internal and market structure, consumer perception, among others. The results obtained are conclusive in terms of the experts’ positive assessment of the tool; highlighting factors such as its response to the need to adapt buildings to climate change, its a standard reference language, and its use in multiple situations. However, several barriers have also been identified, which may affect its development, including its complexity of use, its lack of self-sufficiency, and its dependence the criteria used in each evaluation. Finally, the key strategies to be carried out for the implementation of the Levels have been established.

Abstract The study presents recent developments in the Turkish power market and introduces an Analytic Hierarchy Process model to evaluate and compare the relative overall attractiveness of power plant options for Turkey. The developed model incorporates technical characteristics, resource availability, socio-economic, environmental, cost, political, legal and organisational aspects, for evaluating and prioritising power plant types (biomass, coal, geothermal, hydro, natural gas, nuclear, petroleum, solar and wind). The study incorporates perspectives of different experts that represent various stakeholders of the Turkish power sector. The study reveals that supply reliability, investment costs and contribution to national economy are perceived as most important factors, whereas waste disposal and decommissioning costs are perceived as least important factors. Considering the overall weights, the most attractive power plant types for the Turkish power market are coal, hydro and natural gas power plants. The study indicates that Turkey should drastically decrease the installed capacity share of traditionally dominant power plants (to 58% from 89% in 2016) and fossil fuel power plants (to 40% from 56% in 2016), and increase the share of renewable power plants (to 52% from 44% in 2016), indigenous resource based power plants (to 67% from 56% in 2016) and nuclear power plants.

In this study, the adequacy of four different types of mortars, obtained from four different commercial cements, CEM I, II and IV (A and B), to act as barrier to 137Cs migration was analysed. Diffusion experiments using the in-diffusion (ID) method with constant tracer concentration in the reservoirs were carried out, at increasing experimental times (150, 380 and 1500 days approximately). In the experiments of less duration, and especially in CEM II and CEM I, two different pathways for diffusion were identified (fast and slow), leading to a double porosity system. However, the ???fast??? contribution to Cs diffusion, in all cases, could be neglected at larger experimental time, indicating a rearrangement of the pore structure that becomes more tight and homogeneous over time. Thus, if the experiments last enough time, only one diffusion coefficient properly describe Cs transport in these systems. Apparent diffusion coefficients, Da, obtained for Cs, range between 6.0??10???13 and 1.0??10???14 m2/s. Mortars produced with CEM IV (A and B) are the most efficient barrier for cesium transport, amongst those analysed in this study. Mortars with CEM II, which contain blast furnace slag, present the highest diffusion coefficient.

Improving the environmental performance of the built environment is a ‘super wicked’ problem, lacking a simplistic or straightforward response. This is particularly challenging where space is rented, in part because the relationships between the various owners, users and managers of the space is regulated – at least in a formal sense - through the lease. Traditional leases largely ignore environmental considerations and present barriers to making energy efficient upgrades. Leasing practices are evolving to become greener. Evidence from a Sydney Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) study, Australian leasing experts, a UK commercial lease study and a case-study of a major UK retailer, Marks and Spencer (MandS), suggests an increasing, trend towards green leases in most of these markets and opportunities for improving environmental performance through green leasing. Further research is needed in both countries to understand the impact that greener leasing has on environmental performance of buildings.

[EN] The objective of this article is to compare the behaviour of the most representative domestic hot water systems (DHW) in single-family buildings. The study evaluates the energy consumption, equivalent CO2 emissions and cost for each system over a 15-year life period. This analysis is carried out in four cli- matic zones across Europe to observe the influence of climatic conditions on the results. The four climatic zones are located in the cities of Athens, Madrid, London and Berlin. The analysed systems are: a) natural gas-fired instantaneous water heaters, b) electric storage water heater, c) solar thermal system with gas- fired instantaneous, d) solar thermal system with electric storage water heater, e) air-source heat pump, f) photovoltaic system with electric storage water heater, and g) photovoltaic system with air-source heat pump. This range of technologies covers the most likely solutions to be implemented across domestic buildings in Europe.The heat pump system (HPWH) with PV considering self-consumption shows the lowest environmen- tal impact in all zones, but is not an attractive investment in the coldest zones due to lower natural gas prices. Thermal solar systems have a high purchase and maintenance costs which do not compensate their energy savings. The PV HPWH system has a greater reduction of emissions and a lower cost than HPWH across a 15-year life. The gas boiler system has the lowest cost in a 15-year period in the coldest areas, despite having a greater environmental impact than the heat pump.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Filament seals, such as brush seals and leaf seals, are investigated as a potential improved seal for gas turbine applications. As these seals operate in contact with the rotor, a good understanding of their stiffness is required in order to minimize seal wear and degradation. This paper demonstrates that the filament and complete seal stiffness is affected in comparable magnitudes by mechanical and aerodynamic forces. In certain cases, the aerodynamic forces can also lead to an overall negative seal stiffness which may affect stable seal operation. In negative stiffness, the displacement of the seal or rotor into an eccentric position causes a resultant force, which, rather than restoring the rotor to a central position, acts to amplify its displacement. Insight into the forces acting on the seal filaments is gained by investigating a leaf seal, which consists of a pack of thin planar leaves arranged around the rotor, with coverplates on either side of the leaf pack, offset from the pack surfaces. The leaf seal is chosen due to its geometry being more suitable for analysis compared to alternative filament seals such as the brush seal. Data from two experimental campaigns are presented which show a seal exhibiting negative stiffness and a seal exhibiting a stiffness reduction due to aerodynamic effects. An empirical model for the forces acting on leaf filaments is developed based on the experimental data, which allows separation of mechanical and aerodynamic forces. In addition a numerical model is developed to analyze the flow approaching the leaf pack and the interleaf flow, which gives an insight into the causes of the aerodynamic forces. Using the empirical and numerical models together, a full picture of the forces affecting leaf stiffness is created. Validation of the models is achieved by successfully predicting seal stiffness for a further data set across the full range of operating conditions. The understanding of aerodynamic forces and their impact on filament and seal stiffness allows for their consideration in leaf seal design. A qualitative assessment of how they may be used to improve seal operation in filament seals is given.

Garrido; Caterina Summonte; Stefan Janz;The optical and photovoltaic properties of Si NCs / SiC multilayers (MLs) are investigated using a membrane-based solar cell structure. By removing the Si substrate in the active cell area, the MLs are studied without any bulk Si substrate contribution. The occurrence is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and light-beam induced current mapping . Optical characterization combined with simulations allows us to determine the absorption within the ML absorber layer, isolated from the other cell stack layers. The results indicate that the absorption at wavelengths longer than 800 nm is only due to the SiC matrix. The measured short-circuit current is significantly lower than that theoretically obtained from absorption within the ML absorber, which is ascribed to losses that limit carrier extraction. The origin of these losses is discussed in terms of the material regions where recombination takes place. Our results indicate that carrier extraction is most efficient from the Si NCs themselves, whereas recombination is strongest in SiC and residual a-Si domains . Together with the observed onset of the external quantum efficiency (EQE) at 700-800 nm, this fact is an evidence of quantum confinement in Si NCs embedded in SiC on device level.

Accordingly, battery research and development (R&D) efforts have been increased considerably over the past decades, particularly regarding materials and cell chemistries to further improve the electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries. The impetus behind such massive R&D has been the replacement of metallic lithium anodes, a notorious for potentially catastrophic shorting by lithium metal dendrites. However, despite the promise of a step improvement in energy density outperforming established LIB technology, the commercial introduction of cells with alternative anode materials in the mass market is slow. Against this backdrop, the aim of the present study is to provide an overview of current developments in the academic and industrial research arena, summarising the historical development of scientific literature and patent landscape beyond established anode materials. The study identifies and critically reviews tin, silicon, silicon oxide, aluminium and titanium-based anode materials as promising pathways to develop high-energy density next-generation LIBs.

These temperatures represent an indication of the potential of the thermal resource in the oceanic territory of Panama and could generate benefits for the success and stability of the national economy facing the current and growing challenges of the society. The OTEC technology is promising for countries located in tropical regions, where sea temperature differentials are ideal for efficient operability. Currently, this technology has low efficiency levels. Therefore, to evaluate its possible implementation in Panama, a theoretical thermodynamic analysis has been carried out. An organic Rankine cycle (ORC) simulation for the net production of 100KW was performed. It considered the temperature differentials of the oceanography of Panama and used refrigerants R717 and R134a as working fluids. Considering the database of Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PODAAC) for the year 2018, the ocean territory of Panama in the Gulf of Chiriqui reflects seawater surface temperatures (SST) of approximately 27.5 °C to almost 29.5 °C. Besides these values they do not reflect representative anomalies in the critical points with respect to the seasons of the year. The importance of the study in this area is its proximity to the deep cold sea waters, considering the Panama bathymetry map, since its SST are not very variable through the year or through the territory?

Machine learning studies in the field of renewable energy are analysed here (REML). So, from 2012 to 2021, we looked at the publication tendencies (PT) and bibliometric analysis (BA) of REML research that was indexed by Elsevier Scopus. Key insights into the research landscape, scientific discoveries, and technological advancement were revealed by BA, while PT highlighted REML's important players, top cited papers, and financing organisations. In total, the PT discovered 1,218 works, 397 of which were conference papers and 106 were reviews. Because it spans the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, REML research is exhaustive, varied, and consequential. The most productive researchers, countries, and sponsors include Ravinesh C. Deo, the United States' National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and China's National Natural Science Foundation. Journal prestige and open access are valued by contributors, as seen by the success of Applied Energy and Energies. Productivity among REML's key stakeholders is boosted by collaborations and research funding. Keyword co-occurrence analysis was used to categorise REML research into four broad topic areas: systems, technologies, tools/technologies, and socio-technical dynamics. According to the results, ML plays a crucial role in the prediction, operation, and optimisation of RET as well as the design and development of RE-related materials.

Abstract Level(s) is a common European Union framework of core sustainability indicators for measuring the performance of buildings along their life cycle, enabling emissions reductions and circular resource flows. A fundamental tool for the development of European policies to boost the market for sustainable, resilient and climate change adapted buildings. The objective of this study is to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in the field of sustainable building research, through the definition of strategies to adopt Level(s) for bringing buildings into the Circular Economy. For this reason, a triple SWOT-Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP)-TOWS analysis was applied. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of the Level(s) have been identified in relation to the availability of resources, product quality, internal and market structure, consumer perception, among others. The results obtained are conclusive in terms of the experts’ positive assessment of the tool; highlighting factors such as its response to the need to adapt buildings to climate change, its a standard reference language, and its use in multiple situations. However, several barriers have also been identified, which may affect its development, including its complexity of use, its lack of self-sufficiency, and its dependence the criteria used in each evaluation. Finally, the key strategies to be carried out for the implementation of the Levels have been established.

Abstract The study presents recent developments in the Turkish power market and introduces an Analytic Hierarchy Process model to evaluate and compare the relative overall attractiveness of power plant options for Turkey. The developed model incorporates technical characteristics, resource availability, socio-economic, environmental, cost, political, legal and organisational aspects, for evaluating and prioritising power plant types (biomass, coal, geothermal, hydro, natural gas, nuclear, petroleum, solar and wind). The study incorporates perspectives of different experts that represent various stakeholders of the Turkish power sector. The study reveals that supply reliability, investment costs and contribution to national economy are perceived as most important factors, whereas waste disposal and decommissioning costs are perceived as least important factors. Considering the overall weights, the most attractive power plant types for the Turkish power market are coal, hydro and natural gas power plants. The study indicates that Turkey should drastically decrease the installed capacity share of traditionally dominant power plants (to 58% from 89% in 2016) and fossil fuel power plants (to 40% from 56% in 2016), and increase the share of renewable power plants (to 52% from 44% in 2016), indigenous resource based power plants (to 67% from 56% in 2016) and nuclear power plants.

In this study, the adequacy of four different types of mortars, obtained from four different commercial cements, CEM I, II and IV (A and B), to act as barrier to 137Cs migration was analysed. Diffusion experiments using the in-diffusion (ID) method with constant tracer concentration in the reservoirs were carried out, at increasing experimental times (150, 380 and 1500 days approximately). In the experiments of less duration, and especially in CEM II and CEM I, two different pathways for diffusion were identified (fast and slow), leading to a double porosity system. However, the ???fast??? contribution to Cs diffusion, in all cases, could be neglected at larger experimental time, indicating a rearrangement of the pore structure that becomes more tight and homogeneous over time. Thus, if the experiments last enough time, only one diffusion coefficient properly describe Cs transport in these systems. Apparent diffusion coefficients, Da, obtained for Cs, range between 6.0??10???13 and 1.0??10???14 m2/s. Mortars produced with CEM IV (A and B) are the most efficient barrier for cesium transport, amongst those analysed in this study. Mortars with CEM II, which contain blast furnace slag, present the highest diffusion coefficient.

Improving the environmental performance of the built environment is a ‘super wicked’ problem, lacking a simplistic or straightforward response. This is particularly challenging where space is rented, in part because the relationships between the various owners, users and managers of the space is regulated – at least in a formal sense - through the lease. Traditional leases largely ignore environmental considerations and present barriers to making energy efficient upgrades. Leasing practices are evolving to become greener. Evidence from a Sydney Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) study, Australian leasing experts, a UK commercial lease study and a case-study of a major UK retailer, Marks and Spencer (MandS), suggests an increasing, trend towards green leases in most of these markets and opportunities for improving environmental performance through green leasing. Further research is needed in both countries to understand the impact that greener leasing has on environmental performance of buildings.
