    To fulfill the ever-increasing power demands of deep space exploration, the output performance of radioisotope thermoelectric generators, the only accessible power source, must be enhanced in several aspects, including thermoelectric properties of materials, geometry, welding, etc. In this study, we present our results on the development of a novel thermoelectric slurry suitable for the 3D printing of thermoelectric generators with optimized leg geometry. The rheological properties of the slurry are optimized by combining proper amounts of organic solvent, binder, and bismuth telluride-based thermoelectric powder. The addition of Cu to the slurry as a conductive additive are also investigated. The homogeneous dispersion of Cu within the material not only increases the electrical conductivity of the final thermoelectric leg significantly but also promotes the crystallization of the thermoelectric particles during the sintering process. These effects result in 3D-printed thermoelectric composites exhibiting ZT values up to 0.91 and extended optimum operating temperature range. Thermoelectric modules composed of 3D-printed thermoelectric legs show excellent output performance and structural strength. This work could also produce other special shaped thermoelectric devices to match irregularly shaped heat sources to reduce contact heat loss and improve output performance.

    AbstractImproving the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells is critical to the deployment of this technology. Despite the great emphasis laid on stability-related investigations, publications lack consistency in experimental procedures and parameters reported. It is therefore challenging to reproduce and compare results and thereby develop a deep understanding of degradation mechanisms. Here, we report a consensus between researchers in the field on procedures for testing perovskite solar cell stability, which are based on the International Summit on Organic Photovoltaic Stability (ISOS) protocols. We propose additional procedures to account for properties specific to PSCs such as ion redistribution under electric fields, reversible degradation and to distinguish ambient-induced degradation from other stress factors. These protocols are not intended as a replacement of the existing qualification standards, but rather they aim to unify the stability assessment and to understand failure modes. Finally, we identify key procedural information which we suggest reporting in publications to improve reproducibility and enable large data set analysis.

    AbstractThe need for public engagement is increasingly evident as discussions intensify around emerging methods for carbon dioxide removal and controversial proposals around solar geoengineering. Based on 44 focus groups in 22 countries across the Global North and Global South (N = 323 participants), this article traces public preferences for a variety of bottom-up and top-down engagement practices ranging from information recipient to broad decision authority. Here, we show that engagement practices need to be responsive to local political cultures and socio-technical environments, while attending to the global dimensions and interconnectedness of the issues at stake. Establishing public engagement as a cornerstone of inclusive and sustainable governance of climate-intervention technologies requires (i) recognizing the diversity of forms and intensities of engaging, (ii) considering national contexts and modes of engagement, (iii) tailoring to technological idiosyncrasies, (iv) adopting power-sensitive practices, (v) accounting for publics’ prior experience, (vi) establishing trust and procedural legitimacy and (vii) engaging with tensions and value disagreements.

    Abstract Planar perovskite solar cells using organic charge selective contacts were fabricated. In a vacuum deposited perovskite-based solar cell, dopant and additive free triazatruxene as the hole transport layer was introduced for device fabrication. High open-circuit voltage of 1090 mV was obtained using methylammonium lead iodide (Eg=1.55 eV) as light harvesting material, thus representing a loss of only 460 mV which is in close vicinity of mature silicon technology (400 mV). The devices showed a very competitive photovoltaic performance, monochromatic incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of 80% and the power conversion efficiencies in excess of 15% were measured with a negligible degree of hysteresis.

    AbstractConverting waste into high-value products promotes sustainability by reducing waste and creating new revenue streams. This study investigates the potential of diverse yeasts for microbial oil production by utilizing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that can be produced from organic waste and focuses on identifying strains with the best SCFA utilisation, tolerance and lipid production. A collection of 1434 yeast strains was cultivated with SCFAs as the sole carbon source. Eleven strains emerged as candidates with promising growth rates and high lipid accumulation. Subsequent fermentation experiments in liquid SCFA-rich media, which focused on optimizing lipid accumulation by adjusting the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, showed an increase in lipid content at a C/N ratio of 200:1, but with a concurrent reduction in biomass. Two strains were characterized by their superior ability to produce lipids compared to the reference strain Yarrowia lipolytica CECT124: Y. lipolytica EXF-17398 and Pichia manshurica EXF-7849. Characterization of these two strains indicated that they exhibit a biotechnologically relevant balance between maximizing lipid yield and maintaining growth at high SCFA concentrations. These results emphasize the potential of using SCFAs as a sustainable feedstock for oleochemical production, offering a dual benefit of waste valorisation and microbial oil production.

    The temperature of indoor spaces is at the core of highly relevant topics such as comfort, productivity and health. In conditioned spaces, this temperature is determined by thermostat preferences, but there is a lack of understanding of this phenomenon as a time-dependent magnitude. In addition to this, there is scientific evidence that the mental models of how users understand the operation of the billions of air-conditioning machines around the world are incorrect, which causes systems to ‘compensate’ for temperatures outside by adjusting the thermostat, which leads to erratic changes on set-points over the day. This paper presents the first model of set-point temperature as a time-dependent variable. Additionally, a new mathematical algorithm was developed to complement these models and make possible their identification on the go, called the life Bayesian inference of transition matrices. Data from a total of 75 + 35 real thermostats in two buildings for more than a year were used to validate the model. The method was shown to be highly accurate, fast, and computationally trivial in terms of time and memory, representing a change in the paradigm for smart thermostats.

Companies have been investing in technologies to come up with software and/or hardware solutions that can provide this type of information to the consumer. On the other hand, not all people can afford to have these technologies. Therefore, in this paper, we present a methodology for breaking down the aggregate consumption and identifying the highdemanding end-uses profiles. These energy profiles will be used to build the forecast model for optimal control purpose. A facility with high cooling load is used as an illustrative case study to demonstrate the results of proposed methodology. We apply a high level energy disaggregation through a pattern recognition approach in order to extract the consumption profile of its rooftop packaged units (RTUs) and present a forecast model for the energy consumption.

    Rotary kilns are worldwide used for industrial processes that involve thermal treatments of particulate materials. However, a great amount of fossil fuels is employed in such processes. As alternative, solar rotary kilns are considered for this application due to their versatility and potential to substitute traditional fossil-fuel driven devices. In order to boost the development of this technology, efforts have to be focused on the control of the particle temperature during the treatment. In this context, a lab-scale rotary kiln was built and tested using a 7- kWe high-flux solar simulator at University of Antofagasta. It was conceived to treat particulate materials of different nature and it is able to reach temperatures higher than 800 °C under different operation strategies. Silicon carbide was selected for initial tests because it is inert, endures high temperatures (up to 1600 °C) and it has been proposed as thermal storage vector in several researches on concentrated solar power. In a first stage, the empty kiln was preheated up to about 800 °C, reaching a steady state in less than three hours and with a power of approximately 370 W entering the kiln cavity. Afterwards, 43 g of silicon carbide were introduced in the furnace and the system was heated again up to a second steady state above 800 °C. In this stage, particles showed a fast increment of their temperature and exceeded 700 °C in less than three minutes after loading. A one-dimensional transient numerical model was also developed to perform the thermal analysis of the kiln and the estimation of both the particle temperature and the system efficiency. Numerical results showed good agreement with experimental data and thermal losses could be quantified in detail. Therefore, the model was also used to predict the thermal behavior of a solar rotary kiln working in batch mode.     The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), jointly with the World Health Organization (WHO), has operated a postal dosimetry audit program for radiotherapy centers worldwide since 1969. In 2017 the IAEA introduced a new methodology based on radiophotoluminescent dosimetry (RPLD) for these audits. The detection system consists of a phosphate glass dosimeter inserted in a plastic capsule that is kept in measuring position with a PMMA holder during irradiation. Correction factors for this holder were obtained using experimental methods. In this work these methods are described and the resulting factors are verified by means of Monte Carlo simulation with the general-purpose code PENELOPE for a range of photon beam qualities relevant in radiotherapy. The study relies on a detailed geometrical representation of the experimental setup. Various photon beams were obtained from faithful modeling of the corresponding linacs. Monte Carlo simulation transport parameters are selected to ensure subpercent accuracy. The simulated correction factors fall in the interval 1.005-1.008 (±0.2%), with deviations with respect to experimental values not larger than 0.2(2)%. This study corroborates the validity of the holder correction factors currently used for the IAEA audits.

    The use of diesel-farnesane and sugarcane biodiesel is showing significant potential for reducing harmful emissions from Brazilian road transport. Both biofuels are obtained from sugarcane through synthetic biology that requires fermentation. The present work studies the effect of the sugarcane biofuels, compared to regular diesel fuel, on the performance and emissions of a modern medium-duty diesel engine following the European Steady Cycle (ESC) test procedure. Diesel-farnesane showed the lowest particulate matter (PM) specific emissions. Specific nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from diesel fuel were above the standard limit, while sugarcane biodiesel produced the lowest emissions. All tested fuels produced specific carbon monoxide (CO) emissions below the standard limit, but the biofuels showed higher values than the reference fuel. Sugarcane biodiesel showed an inhibition effect on the oxidation process at the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), leading to the highest specific CO emissions after the DOC. Specific total hydrocarbons (THC) emissions were well below the standard limits for all tested fuels. Concerning the regulated emissions for diesel engines (g/h), the use of sugarcane biodiesel led to PM and NOx reductions of 32.4% and 37.3%, while diesel-farnesane led to 41.7% and 6.08% reductions, respectively. These notable reductions in harmful emissions support the application of sugarcane biofuels to road transport.     To fulfill the ever-increasing power demands of deep space exploration, the output performance of radioisotope thermoelectric generators, the only accessible power source, must be enhanced in several aspects, including thermoelectric properties of materials, geometry, welding, etc. In this study, we present our results on the development of a novel thermoelectric slurry suitable for the 3D printing of thermoelectric generators with optimized leg geometry. The rheological properties of the slurry are optimized by combining proper amounts of organic solvent, binder, and bismuth telluride-based thermoelectric powder. The addition of Cu to the slurry as a conductive additive are also investigated. The homogeneous dispersion of Cu within the material not only increases the electrical conductivity of the final thermoelectric leg significantly but also promotes the crystallization of the thermoelectric particles during the sintering process. These effects result in 3D-printed thermoelectric composites exhibiting ZT values up to 0.91 and extended optimum operating temperature range. Thermoelectric modules composed of 3D-printed thermoelectric legs show excellent output performance and structural strength. This work could also produce other special shaped thermoelectric devices to match irregularly shaped heat sources to reduce contact heat loss and improve output performance.

    AbstractImproving the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells is critical to the deployment of this technology. Despite the great emphasis laid on stability-related investigations, publications lack consistency in experimental procedures and parameters reported. It is therefore challenging to reproduce and compare results and thereby develop a deep understanding of degradation mechanisms. Here, we report a consensus between researchers in the field on procedures for testing perovskite solar cell stability, which are based on the International Summit on Organic Photovoltaic Stability (ISOS) protocols. We propose additional procedures to account for properties specific to PSCs such as ion redistribution under electric fields, reversible degradation and to distinguish ambient-induced degradation from other stress factors. These protocols are not intended as a replacement of the existing qualification standards, but rather they aim to unify the stability assessment and to understand failure modes. Finally, we identify key procedural information which we suggest reporting in publications to improve reproducibility and enable large data set analysis.

    AbstractThe need for public engagement is increasingly evident as discussions intensify around emerging methods for carbon dioxide removal and controversial proposals around solar geoengineering. Based on 44 focus groups in 22 countries across the Global North and Global South (N = 323 participants), this article traces public preferences for a variety of bottom-up and top-down engagement practices ranging from information recipient to broad decision authority. Here, we show that engagement practices need to be responsive to local political cultures and socio-technical environments, while attending to the global dimensions and interconnectedness of the issues at stake. Establishing public engagement as a cornerstone of inclusive and sustainable governance of climate-intervention technologies requires (i) recognizing the diversity of forms and intensities of engaging, (ii) considering national contexts and modes of engagement, (iii) tailoring to technological idiosyncrasies, (iv) adopting power-sensitive practices, (v) accounting for publics’ prior experience, (vi) establishing trust and procedural legitimacy and (vii) engaging with tensions and value disagreements.

    Abstract Planar perovskite solar cells using organic charge selective contacts were fabricated. In a vacuum deposited perovskite-based solar cell, dopant and additive free triazatruxene as the hole transport layer was introduced for device fabrication. High open-circuit voltage of 1090 mV was obtained using methylammonium lead iodide (Eg=1.55 eV) as light harvesting material, thus representing a loss of only 460 mV which is in close vicinity of mature silicon technology (400 mV). The devices showed a very competitive photovoltaic performance, monochromatic incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of 80% and the power conversion efficiencies in excess of 15% were measured with a negligible degree of hysteresis.

    AbstractConverting waste into high-value products promotes sustainability by reducing waste and creating new revenue streams. This study investigates the potential of diverse yeasts for microbial oil production by utilizing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that can be produced from organic waste and focuses on identifying strains with the best SCFA utilisation, tolerance and lipid production. A collection of 1434 yeast strains was cultivated with SCFAs as the sole carbon source. Eleven strains emerged as candidates with promising growth rates and high lipid accumulation. Subsequent fermentation experiments in liquid SCFA-rich media, which focused on optimizing lipid accumulation by adjusting the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, showed an increase in lipid content at a C/N ratio of 200:1, but with a concurrent reduction in biomass. Two strains were characterized by their superior ability to produce lipids compared to the reference strain Yarrowia lipolytica CECT124: Y. lipolytica EXF-17398 and Pichia manshurica EXF-7849. Characterization of these two strains indicated that they exhibit a biotechnologically relevant balance between maximizing lipid yield and maintaining growth at high SCFA concentrations. These results emphasize the potential of using SCFAs as a sustainable feedstock for oleochemical production, offering a dual benefit of waste valorisation and microbial oil production.

    The temperature of indoor spaces is at the core of highly relevant topics such as comfort, productivity and health. In conditioned spaces, this temperature is determined by thermostat preferences, but there is a lack of understanding of this phenomenon as a time-dependent magnitude. In addition to this, there is scientific evidence that the mental models of how users understand the operation of the billions of air-conditioning machines around the world are incorrect, which causes systems to ‘compensate’ for temperatures outside by adjusting the thermostat, which leads to erratic changes on set-points over the day. This paper presents the first model of set-point temperature as a time-dependent variable. Additionally, a new mathematical algorithm was developed to complement these models and make possible their identification on the go, called the life Bayesian inference of transition matrices. Data from a total of 75 + 35 real thermostats in two buildings for more than a year were used to validate the model. The method was shown to be highly accurate, fast, and computationally trivial in terms of time and memory, representing a change in the paradigm for smart thermostats.

Companies have been investing in technologies to come up with software and/or hardware solutions that can provide this type of information to the consumer. On the other hand, not all people can afford to have these technologies. Therefore, in this paper, we present a methodology for breaking down the aggregate consumption and identifying the highdemanding end-uses profiles. These energy profiles will be used to build the forecast model for optimal control purpose. A facility with high cooling load is used as an illustrative case study to demonstrate the results of proposed methodology. We apply a high level energy disaggregation through a pattern recognition approach in order to extract the consumption profile of its rooftop packaged units (RTUs) and present a forecast model for the energy consumption.

    Rotary kilns are worldwide used for industrial processes that involve thermal treatments of particulate materials. However, a great amount of fossil fuels is employed in such processes. As alternative, solar rotary kilns are considered for this application due to their versatility and potential to substitute traditional fossil-fuel driven devices. In order to boost the development of this technology, efforts have to be focused on the control of the particle temperature during the treatment. In this context, a lab-scale rotary kiln was built and tested using a 7- kWe high-flux solar simulator at University of Antofagasta. It was conceived to treat particulate materials of different nature and it is able to reach temperatures higher than 800 °C under different operation strategies. Silicon carbide was selected for initial tests because it is inert, endures high temperatures (up to 1600 °C) and it has been proposed as thermal storage vector in several researches on concentrated solar power. In a first stage, the empty kiln was preheated up to about 800 °C, reaching a steady state in less than three hours and with a power of approximately 370 W entering the kiln cavity. Afterwards, 43 g of silicon carbide were introduced in the furnace and the system was heated again up to a second steady state above 800 °C. In this stage, particles showed a fast increment of their temperature and exceeded 700 °C in less than three minutes after loading. A one-dimensional transient numerical model was also developed to perform the thermal analysis of the kiln and the estimation of both the particle temperature and the system efficiency. Numerical results showed good agreement with experimental data and thermal losses could be quantified in detail. Therefore, the model was also used to predict the thermal behavior of a solar rotary kiln working in batch mode.     The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), jointly with the World Health Organization (WHO), has operated a postal dosimetry audit program for radiotherapy centers worldwide since 1969. In 2017 the IAEA introduced a new methodology based on radiophotoluminescent dosimetry (RPLD) for these audits. The detection system consists of a phosphate glass dosimeter inserted in a plastic capsule that is kept in measuring position with a PMMA holder during irradiation. Correction factors for this holder were obtained using experimental methods. In this work these methods are described and the resulting factors are verified by means of Monte Carlo simulation with the general-purpose code PENELOPE for a range of photon beam qualities relevant in radiotherapy. The study relies on a detailed geometrical representation of the experimental setup. Various photon beams were obtained from faithful modeling of the corresponding linacs. Monte Carlo simulation transport parameters are selected to ensure subpercent accuracy. The simulated correction factors fall in the interval 1.005-1.008 (±0.2%), with deviations with respect to experimental values not larger than 0.2(2)%. This study corroborates the validity of the holder correction factors currently used for the IAEA audits.

    The use of diesel-farnesane and sugarcane biodiesel is showing significant potential for reducing harmful emissions from Brazilian road transport. Both biofuels are obtained from sugarcane through synthetic biology that requires fermentation. The present work studies the effect of the sugarcane biofuels, compared to regular diesel fuel, on the performance and emissions of a modern medium-duty diesel engine following the European Steady Cycle (ESC) test procedure. Diesel-farnesane showed the lowest particulate matter (PM) specific emissions. Specific nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from diesel fuel were above the standard limit, while sugarcane biodiesel produced the lowest emissions. All tested fuels produced specific carbon monoxide (CO) emissions below the standard limit, but the biofuels showed higher values than the reference fuel. Sugarcane biodiesel showed an inhibition effect on the oxidation process at the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), leading to the highest specific CO emissions after the DOC. Specific total hydrocarbons (THC) emissions were well below the standard limits for all tested fuels. Concerning the regulated emissions for diesel engines (g/h), the use of sugarcane biodiesel led to PM and NOx reductions of 32.4% and 37.3%, while diesel-farnesane led to 41.7% and 6.08% reductions, respectively. These notable reductions in harmful emissions support the application of sugarcane biofuels to road transport.
