Patrice K. Nicholas in OpenAIREBackground: Climate change has been shown to be directly linked to multiple physiological sequelae and to impact health consequences. However, the impact of climate change on mental health globally, particularly among vulnerable populations, is less well understood. Objective: To explore the mental health impacts of climate change in vulnerable populations globally. Methods: We performed an integrative literature review to identify published articles that addressed the research question: What are the mental health impacts of climate change among vulnerable populations globally? The Vulnerable Populations Conceptual Model served as a theoretical model during the review process and data synthesis. Findings/Results: One hundred and four articles were selected for inclusion in this review after a comprehensive review of 1828 manuscripts. Articles were diverse in scope and populations addressed. Land-vulnerable persons (either due to occupation or geographic location), Indigenous persons, children, older adults, and climate migrants were among the vulnerable populations whose mental health was most impacted by climate change. The most prevalent mental health responses to climate change included solastalgia, suicidality, depression, anxiety/eco-anxiety, PTSD, substance use, insomnia, and behavioral disturbance. Conclusions: Mental health professionals including physicians, nurses, physician assistants and other healthcare providers have the opportunity to mitigate the mental health impacts of climate change among vulnerable populations through assessment, preventative education and care. An inclusive and trauma-informed response to climate-related disasters, use of validated measures of mental health, and a long-term therapeutic relationship that extends beyond the immediate consequences of climate change-related events are approaches to successful mental health care in a climate-changing world.

Historical exploitation of the Mediterranean Sea and the absence of rigorous baselines makes it difficult to evaluate the current health of the marine ecosystems and the efficacy of conservation actions at the ecosystem level. Here we establish the first current baseline and gradient of ecosystem structure of nearshore rocky reefs at the Mediterranean scale. We conducted underwater surveys in 14 marine protected areas and 18 open access sites across the Mediterranean, and across a 31-fold range of fish biomass (from 3.8 to 118 g m(-2)). Our data showed remarkable variation in the structure of rocky reef ecosystems. Multivariate analysis showed three alternative community states: (1) large fish biomass and reefs dominated by non-canopy algae, (2) lower fish biomass but abundant native algal canopies and suspension feeders, and (3) low fish biomass and extensive barrens, with areas covered by turf algae. Our results suggest that the healthiest shallow rocky reef ecosystems in the Mediterranean have both large fish and algal biomass. Protection level and primary production were the only variables significantly correlated to community biomass structure. Fish biomass was significantly larger in well-enforced no-take marine reserves, but there were no significant differences between multi-use marine protected areas (which allow some fishing) and open access areas at the regional scale. The gradients reported here represent a trajectory of degradation that can be used to assess the health of any similar habitat in the Mediterranean, and to evaluate the efficacy of marine protected areas.

Jose Luis Dominguez-Garcia in OpenAIREThe appropriate control and management of reactive power is of great relevance in the electrical reliability, stability, and security of power grids. This issue is considered in order to increase system efficiency and to maintain voltage under the acceptable value range. In this regard, novel technologies as FACTS, renewable energies, among others, are varying conventional grid behavior leading to unexpected limit capacity reaching due to large reactive power flow. Thus, optimal planning of this must be considered. This paper proposes a new application for a simple and easy implementation optimization algorithm, called Rao-3, to solve the constrained non-linear optimal reactive power dispatch problem. Moreover, the integration of solar and wind energy as the most applied technologies in electric power systems are exploited. Due to the continuous variation and the natural intermittence of wind speed and solar irradiance as well as load demand fluctuation, the uncertainties which have a global concern are investigated and considered in this paper. The proposed single-objective and multi-objective deterministic/stochastic optimal reactive power dispatch algorithms are validated using three standard test power systems, namely IEEE 30-bus, IEEE 57-bus, and IEEE 118-bus. The simulation results show that the proposed optimal reactive power dispatch algorithms are superior compared with two recent algorithms (Artificial electric field algorithm (AEFA) and artificial Jellyfish Search (JS) algorithm) and other optimization algorithms used for solving the same problem.

AbstractThe production of Z boson pairs in proton–proton ($${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} $$ p p ) collisions, $${{\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow ({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*)({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*) \rightarrow 2\ell 2\ell '}$$ p p → ( Z / γ ∗ ) ( Z / γ ∗ ) → 2 ℓ 2 ℓ ′ , where $${\ell ,\ell ' = {\mathrm{e}}}$$ ℓ , ℓ ′ = e or $${{\upmu }}$$ μ , is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13$$\,\text {TeV}$$ TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 , collected during 2016–2018. The $${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $$ Z Z production cross section, $$\sigma _{\text {tot}} ({\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} ) = 17.4 \pm 0.3 \,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.5 \,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.4 \,\text {(theo)} \pm 0.3 \,\text {(lumi)} \text { pb} $$ σ tot ( p p → Z Z ) = 17.4 ± 0.3 (stat) ± 0.5 (syst) ± 0.4 (theo) ± 0.3 (lumi) pb , measured for events with two pairs of opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons produced in the mass region $${60< m_{\ell ^+\ell ^-} < 120\,\text {GeV}}$$ 60 < m ℓ + ℓ - < 120 GeV is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are also measured and agree with theoretical predictions. Chemical looping combustion allows the carbon dioxide capture by using an oxygen carrier, which transports the oxygen required for combustion from the air to the fuel. But complete combustion of a solid fuel is not achieved when low cost materials were used as oxygen carriers. Manganese‑iron mixed oxide doped with titanium has been identified as a promising oxygen carrier to improve combustion efficiency due to its oxygen uncoupling capability. The objective of this work was to assess the potential of this oxygen carrier when burning coal in a chemical looping unit. The coal combustion efficiency and carbon dioxide capture were evaluated as a function of the operating conditions both in the fuel and air reactor. Carbon dioxide capture was affected by the solids residence time in the fuel reactor. Coal combustion efficiency increased as the oxygen uncoupling capability was enhanced by using suitable operating conditions in the air reactor. Almost full coal combustion (99.4%) was achieved by setting an air reactor temperature of 880 °C, an air excess of 1.8, a fuel reactor temperature of 925 °C, and an oxygen carrier to fuel ratio >3. The oxygen carrier showed magnetic properties, allowing its re-use after being separated from ash. [EN] Many governments are pushing for cleaner transportation. In particular, public transportation allows massive transportation of passengers, but it remains highly polluting, especially in high elevation cities. Thus, the progressive introduction of electric buses (EBS) will allow mitigating these environmental concerns. However, some technological problems must be addressed considering the massive penetration of EBs. The lack of flexibility and the time connection of scheduling for public transit make EBS harder than internal combustion ones. This work studies the impact of charging EBs at the bus station and suggests a new way to take EB aggregators into account to reduce energy costs while fulfilling grid restrictions. In addition, to find a different number of charging spots to be installed, a scheduling analysis is conducted. This works belongs to the projects IEA.JCG.20.01 and SIS.MGR.21.01 from Universidad de las Americas - Ecuador. The authors would like to thank Paulo Guerra-Teran from Universidad de las Americas - Ecuador for the fruitful discussion.

Eggshell is a cheap and environmentally friendly waste stream from the food industry, which could be potentially used for different applications in a circular economy scenario. Carbonation of eggshell derived sorbents has been investigated for calcium looping high temperature applications. Nevertheless, the application of these sorbents for direct air capture is yet to be explored in detail. In this work, waste eggshell (ES) and three different ethanol/water treated eggshell samples (E70, E80 and E90) are assessed for direct air capture and compared to limestone. These samples are exposed to ambient air in two distinct conditions. Namely, i) ambient air at 25 °C in a laboratory and ii) refrigerator conditions at 4 °C in order to simulate how these sorbents might perform in different climatic scenarios for varying geographic areas. Carbonation and hydration conversions were calculated for times of ∼ 3000 h. It was found that treating the eggshells with ethanol was key in order to obtain a suitable material for this application. Two of the ethanol-treated samples obtained similar conversions in comparable amounts of time for ambient air conditions, while limestone still performed better in refrigerator conditions

This paper reviews and assesses conditions for increased and efficient use of biomass in Central America (CA), providing an overview of conditions for biomass supply in each country. Then, a Fuzzy Multi-Actor Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) method is applied to identify a portfolio of biomass conversion technologies appropriate for CA, considering technical, economic, environmental and socio-political aspects. The work is motivated by the relatively large availability of biomass in CA at the same time as current conversion of biomass is carried out in inefficient processes. The assessment of technologies includes thermochemical processes (pyrolysis, combustion and gasification) for production of different energy carriers, including improved cooking stoves (ICSs). The most promising biomass feedstocks in the region are residue based; animal (manure), forest and agricultural origin. We show that around 250 PJ/year could be available for the energy sector, which is equivalent to 34% of primary energy supply for CA. It is concluded that in the short term promoting and implementing ICSs will give the largest improvement in the efficiency of biomass use, whereas on the long term small combustion plants seem to be the best choice for transforming CA's biomass into a clean and sustainable energy carriers, boosting economy and industrial development. Results show that the introduction of ICSs will result in an annual saving in the range of 4-8 Mt of fuelwood (59-113 PJ). Moreover, even when the investment cost of the cooking stoves is considered, ICSs yield economic savings to fuelwood consumers compared to traditional stoves. The total savings during the first year of implementation would be in the range of 19-152 US$/stove. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The future performance of the widely abundant European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) across its ecological amplitude is uncertain. Although beech is considered drought-sensitive and thus negatively affected by drought events, scientific evidence indicating increasing drought vulnerability under climate change on a cross-regional scale remains elusive. While evaluating changes in climate sensitivity of secondary growth offers a promising avenue, studies from productive, closed-canopy forests suffer from knowledge gaps, especially regarding the natural variability of climate sensitivity and how it relates to radial growth as an indicator of tree vitality. Since beech is sensitive to drought, we in this study use a drought index as a climate variable to account for the combined effects of temperature and water availability and explore how the drought sensitivity of secondary growth varies temporally in dependence on growth variability, growth trends, and climatic water availability across the species' ecological amplitude. Our results show that drought sensitivity is highly variable and non-stationary, though consistently higher at dry sites compared to moist sites. Increasing drought sensitivity can largely be explained by increasing climatic aridity, especially as it is exacerbated by climate change and trees' rank progression within forest communities, as (co-)dominant trees are more sensitive to extra-canopy climatic conditions than trees embedded in understories. However, during the driest periods of the 20th century, growth showed clear signs of being decoupled from climate. This may indicate fundamental changes in system behavior and be early-warning signals of decreasing drought tolerance. The multiple significant interaction terms in our model elucidate the complexity of European beech's drought sensitivity, which needs to be taken into consideration when assessing this species' response to climate change.
