Hydropower plants restricts the fish migration in rivers. Thus, several devices have been installed in hydropower plants to facilitate fish passage. The bases for the design and sizing of these devices, called "fishfriendly water intakes", were defined in 2008 by Courret & Larinier based on feedback acquired in France and abroad. Hydraulic studies on a reduced model of trash rack, a component of the water intake, then confirmed certain criteria concerning the installation of trash racks and the design of the associated bypasses. They also led to produce head loss formulas adapted to the tested configurations in order to predict energy loss resulting to trash rack implementation in hydropower plants. This thesis explores new concepts of fishfriendly trash racks (rack placed at the inlet of the turbines to prevent fish passage) which minimize head losses for producers and which are suitable for downstream fish migration. First, an optimization of inclined trash racks is proposed with different bar shapes and the addition of the effect of the supports that maintains the trash racks. The flow upstream this type of racks is then studied in-situ in order to assess the effectiveness of the first fishfriendly trash racks installed in hydropower plants with numerical simulations carried out in parallel. Secondly, new physical barriers are studied. The angled trash racks with horizontal bars were tested and show a favorable guidance of the fish and a low head loss whose model is inclined trash racks one. The second new solution explored is the perforated plate, which has proven to be as effective as the inclined trash rack in terms of fish guidance with the advantage of minimizing further the head losses.

Optical efficiency of the mirrors is one of the key factors influencing a power plant performance. Methods which allow the operator to adjust all the heliostat of a plant quickly, in addition of calibration and tracking, are essential for the rise of the technology. The work presented in this thesis is the study of a “backward-gazing” method consisting in placing four cameras near the receiver simultaneously recording brightness images of the sun reflected by the heliostat. The optical errors of the mirrors are retrieved from these four images and the knowledge of the one dimension sun radiance profile. The first step of the study consists in the theoretical description of the method. Then numerical simulations are performed to estimate the general accuracy and the limits of the backward-gazing method. In a third phase, experimental tests have been fulfilled at Themis solar power plant. Finally, ideas of improvement are proposed based on the experiments performed.

Wireless mesh networks (WMN) are a promising solution to support high data rate and increase the capacity provided to users, e.g. for meeting the requirements of mobile multimedia applications. However, the rapid growth of traffic load generated by the terminals is accompanied by an unsustainable increase of energy consumption, which becomes a hot societal and economical challenges. This thesis relates to the problem of the optimization of network capacity and energy consumption of wireless mesh networks. The network capacity is defined as the maximum achievable total traffic in the network per unit time. This thesis is divided into four main parts. First, we address the problem of improvement of the capacity of 802.11 wireless mesh networks. We highlight some insensible properties and deterministic factors of the capacity, while it is directly related to a bottleneck problem. Then, we propose a joint TDMA/CSMA scheduling strategy for solving the bottleneck issue in the network. Second, we focus on broadband wireless mesh networks based on time-frequency resource management. In order to get theoretical bounds on the network performances, we formulate optimization models based on linear programming and column generation algorithm. These models lead to compute an optimal offline configuration which maximizes the network capacity with low energy consumption. A realistic SINR model of the physical layer allows the nodes to perform continuous power control and use a discrete set of data rates. Third, we use the optimization models to provide practical engineering insights on WMN. We briefly study the tradeoff between network capacity and energy consumption using a realistic physical layer and SINR interference model. Finally, we focus on capacity and energy optimization for heterogeneous cellular networks. We develop, first, optimization tools to calculate an optimal configuration of the network that maximizes the network capacity with low energy consumption. We second propose a heuristic algorithm that calculates a scheduling and partial sleeping of base stations in two different strategies, called LAFS and MAFS.

The work deals with the integration of passive components for the conversion and storage of energy in the general context of portable electronic devices. The development of micro-electronics lead to the miniaturization of electronic circuits, pushing the expansion of portable electronic devices usage (smart phones, tablets, digital cameras pictures ... etc) and the emergence of networks of communicating sensors for ambient intelligence. One of the challenges of the coming years is to meet the ever-increasing number of functionalities and provide energy autonomy for these different objects. Miniaturization and 3D heterogeneous integration approach are solutions to overcome the technological barriers and address these issues. In power circuits providing conversion and energy management, the size of converters is defined by the size of passive elements. I will present the work carried out since 2005 at LAAS-CNRS for the integration of passive components (coils, capacitors) on silicon dedicated to energy management circuits. The work focuses on the design, development of topologies and technologies for micro-coils (L) and integrated capacitors (C). For highdensity capacitors (above 500 nF.mm-2), silicon etching technologies were explored associated with the synthesis of high-k materials. Regarding micro-coils, to reach specifications defined by low power converters, developments mainly concern the integration of magnetic core and technologies for depositing thick insulation and metal layers. In the long term, to produce power supply on-chip, stacking of multi-functional chips are desired. We will show some ways of integration: passive chip, or passive-active co-integration. In a second part, we will discuss the energy autonomy of microsystems (sensors or other). Many research has emerged since the early 2000s around microsystems harvesting ambient energy: solar, thermal, mechanical, acoustic. Since the harvested energy is intermittent, there is the need for a buffer energy storage. In this case, the best solution is to use a supercapacitor storage element which has almost unlimited lifetime. I will present the research activities related to the integration of micro-supercapacitors on silicon. The first devices based on activated carbon and other nanostructured carbons showed very interesting performance: 250 mJ.cm-2 in energy and 200 mW.cm-2 in power respectively. Finally, research perspectives will be proposed and discussed.

Overfishing and climate change are now recognized to have important effects on marine ecosystem functioning but uncertainties remains about their combined effects. Using a modelling approach this thesis aims at assessing how the top-down effects of fishing and the bottom-up effects of climate combine themselves within the food web. A preliminary review highlighted the lack of end-to-end model applicable as it stands to our study case - the southern Benguela - and suitable to study the combined effects of fishing and climate. Coupling the plankton model ROMS-N2P2Z2D2 and the fish model OSMOSE appeared as an innovative method allowing to develop an appropriate tool meeting our objectives. The importance of two-way coupling via the predation process is first illustrated by the study of spatial and temporal variabilities of the feedback term, and then by the comparison of plankton and ecosystem dynamics when there is feedback or not. Simulating climate and fishing scenarios show that the combined effects of these factors are generally smaller than the sum of their individual effects. This result reflects the strong resilience of the ecosystem to external perturbations, induced by the numerous and weak trophic interactions between organisms. In agreement with hypotheses of trophic functioning based on the intensity of primary production and predators diversity, the study of the trophic pyramid show that bottom-up control dominates in the southern Benguela, i.e. that climate has stronger effects on the trophic functioning of this ecosystem than fishing.
