New chemical sensors for adrenaline Adr were fabricated. For that, a thin film of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was templated with protonated adrenaline HAdr. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), capacitive impedometry (CI), or piezoelectric microgravimetry (PM) was integrated within each chemosensor for analytical signal transduction. First, molecular structure of prepolymerization complex of HAdr with bis(2,2'-bithienyl)methane substituted with the benzo-(18-crown-6) 2 and 4-carboxyphenyl 3 was thermodynamically optimized at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) level. Then, a HAdr-templated MIP film was deposited on the Pt disk electrode and on the Au film electrode of a 10-MHz quartz crystal resonator (QCR) by potentiodynamic electropolymerization from solution of HAdr, 2, 3, and the cross-linking tris([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)methane 4 monomer at the HAdr:2:3:4 = 1:1:1:2 mole ratio. For determination of Adr, the DPV peak current for the K4[Fe(CN)6] redox probe under batch conditions and the resonant frequency and capacity of the electrical double layer under FIA conditions were measured. The lower limits of detection (LOD) were 2 nM, 0.5 μM, and 1.5 μM for the DPV, PM, and CI chemosensor, respectively, indicating suitability of the DPV chemosensor for Adr determination in biological systems (-50 nM). The chemosensors were appreciably selective to Adr in the presence of common interferents.

Reduced instrument responses are presented for Thermal-Hydraulic Test Facility (THTF) test 101, which is part of the ORNL Pressurized-Water Reactor (PWR) Blowdown Heat Transfer Separate-Effects Program. The objective of the program is to investigate the thermal-hydraulic phenomenon governing the energy transfer and transport processes that occur during a loss-of-coolant accident in a PWR system. Test 101 was conducted to investigate the thermal-hydraulic response of bundle 1 and the main heat exchangers to powered operation and a single-ended rupture at the test section outlet.

AbstractThe worldwide retreat of glaciers is causing a faster than ever increase in ice‐free areas that are leading to the emergence of new ecosystems. Understanding the dynamics of these environments is critical to predicting the consequences of climate change on mountains and at high latitudes. Climatic differences between regions of the world could modulate the emergence of biodiversity and functionality after glacier retreat, yet global tests of this hypothesis are lacking. Nematodes are the most abundant soil animals, with keystone roles in ecosystem functioning, but the lack of global‐scale studies limits our understanding of how the taxonomic and functional diversity of nematodes changes during the colonization of proglacial landscapes. We used environmental DNA metabarcoding to characterize nematode communities of 48 glacier forelands from five continents. We assessed how different facets of biodiversity change with the age of deglaciated terrains and tested the hypothesis that colonization patterns are different across forelands with different climatic conditions. Nematodes colonized ice‐free areas almost immediately. Both taxonomic and functional richness quickly increased over time, but the increase in nematode diversity was modulated by climate, so that colonization started earlier in forelands with mild summer temperatures. Colder forelands initially hosted poor communities, but the colonization rate then accelerated, eventually leveling biodiversity differences between climatic regimes in the long term. Immediately after glacier retreat, communities were dominated by colonizer taxa with short generation time and r‐ecological strategy but community composition shifted through time, with increased frequency of more persister taxa with K‐ecological strategy. These changes mostly occurred through the addition of new traits instead of their replacement during succession. The effects of local climate on nematode colonization led to heterogeneous but predictable patterns around the world that likely affect soil communities and overall ecosystem development.

Over the past decade, long-term socio-ecological research (LTSER) has been established to better integrate social science research and societal concerns into the goals and objectives of the International Long-Term Ecological Research (ILTER) network, an established global network of long-term ecologicalmonitoring sites. TheHorizon 2020 eLTER project, currently underway, includes as one of its key objectives to evaluate the performance of LTSER platforms.This article reflects part of this evaluation: six LTSER platformswere assessed through site visits of the lead author, coupledwith reflections and insights of the platform managers, whoare also co-authors.We provide background for the mission and goals of LTSER, then assess the six international LTSERplatforms—Baltimore Ecosystem Study LTER, USA; Braila Island LTSER, Romania; Cairngorms LTSER, UK;Doñana LTSER, Spain;OmoraEthnobotanical Park CapeHorn LTER,Chile; and Sierra Nevada LTSER, Spain. While based on a strong theoretical foundation in socio-ecological research, there has been a steep learning curve for scientists applying the concept in practice at LTSERplatforms.We show positive impacts that have been achieved, including contributions to policy, land-use planning, and natural resourcemanagement.Weexplain key aspects of LTSERplatforms that have proven challenging, includingmanagement, interdisciplinary integration, and stakeholder collaboration.Wecharacterize the tensions between top-down desires for network harmonization, bottom-up demands such as local policy relevance, and platform-level constraints such as time and budget. Finally,we discuss challenges, such as local context dominating the character of LTSERplatforms, and the fact that scientists are often disincentivized from engaging in transdisciplinary science. Overall, we conclude that while the internationalnetwork offers important advantages to itsmembers, a more productive balance between local and global goals could be achieved, and membersmay need to temper their expectations of what the network can and cannot offer at the local level. We extend our investigation of backgrounds to new physics signals, following CMS's data-driven search for supersymmetry at the LHC. The aim is to use different sets of cuts in gamma + 3-jet production to predict the irreducible Z + 3-jet background (with the Z boson decaying to neutrinos) to searches with missing transverse energy + 3-jet signal topologies. We compute ratios of Z + 3-jet to gamma + 3-jet production cross sections and kinematic distributions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in alpha_s. We compare these ratios with those obtained using a parton shower matched to leading-order matrix elements (ME+PS). This study extends our previous work [arXiv:1106.1423 [hep-ph]] on the Z + 2-jet to gamma + 2-jet ratio. We find excellent agreement with the ratio determined from the earlier NLO results involving two instead of three jets, and agreement to within 10% between the NLO and ME+PS results for the ratios. We also examine the possibility of large QCD logarithms in these processes. Ratios of Z + n-jet to gamma + n-jet cross sections are plausibly less sensitive to such corrections than the cross sections themselves. Their effect on estimates of Z + 3-jet to gamma + 3-jet ratios can be assessed experimentally by measuring the gamma + 3-jet to gamma + 2-jet production ratio in search regions. We partially address the question of potentially large electroweak logarithms by computing the real-emission part of the electroweak corrections to the ratio using ME+PS, and find that it is 1% or less. We present an analysis of gamma-ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in the region around SNR S147 (G180.0-1.7). A spatially extended gamma-ray source detected in an energy range of 0.2--10 GeV is found to coincide with SNR S147. We confirm its spatial extension at >5sigma confidence level. The gamma-ray flux is (3.8 \pm 0.6) x 10^{-8} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}, corresponding to a luminosity of 1.3 x 10^{34} (d/1.3 kpc)^2 erg s^{-1} in this energy range. The gamma-ray emission exhibits a possible spatial correlation with prominent Halpha filaments of S147. There is no indication that the gamma-ray emission comes from the associated pulsar PSR J0538+2817. The gamma-ray spectrum integrated over the remnant is likely dominated by the decay of neutral pi mesons produced through the proton--proton collisions in the filaments. Reacceleration of pre-existing CRs and subsequent adiabatic compression in the filaments is sufficient to provide the required energy density of high-energy protons. 12 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Two selective chemosensors for adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) determination featuring molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) film recognition units were fabricated. For imprinting, three different thiophene derivatives were used as functional monomers. That is, the uracil substituent of bis(2,2'-bithienyl)methane 2 complementarily H-bond paired the adenine moiety of ATP, the boronic acid substituent of thiophene 3 covalently bound vicinal diols of the ribofuranose moiety, and amide substituents of bis(2,2'-bithienyl)methanes 4 bound to the pyrophosphate moieties. Different binding motifs adopted for the ATP recognition and the structure of the supramolecular pre-polymerization complex were optimized with the DFT computing at the B3LYP/3-21G((*)) level. MIP films were prepared by potentiodynamic electropolymerization of this complex with the imprinting factor of 9.47±0.2. An analytical signal was transduced with a 10-MHz resonator of EQCM and a Pt electrode for the piezoelectric microgravimetry (PM) and capacitive impedometry (CI) determination of ATP, respectively, under FIA conditions. Analytical properties of the MIP film were unraveled by spectroscopic ellipsometry, XPS, IRRAS, and DPV. The limit of detection was 0.1 and 0.2 μM for the PM and CI chemosensor, respectively, being an order of magnitude lower than the ATP concentration in biological systems. Moreover, cross-selectivity was demonstrated with the adenosine-5'-diphosphate (ADP) imprinting and ATP discrimination.

The present mechanism consists of 273 species up to chrysene and 1740 reactions. The rate constants of reactions of toluene decomposition, reaction with oxygen, ipso-additions and metatheses with abstraction of phenylic H-atom are updated; new pathways of C4 + C2 species giving benzene and fulvene are added. Based on the experimental observations, combustion intermediates such as fulvenallene, naphtol, methylnaphthalene, acenaphthylene, 2-ethynylnaphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, 1-methylphenanthrene, pyrene and chrysene are involved in the present mechanism. The final toluene model leads to an overall satisfactory agreement between the experimentally observed and predicted mole fraction profiles for the major products and most combustion intermediates. The toluene depletion is governed by metathese giving benzyl radicals, ipso-addition forming benzene and metatheses leading to C6H4CH3 radicals. A sensitivity analysis indicates that the unimolecular decomposition via the cleavage of a methyl C-H bond has a strong inhibiting effect, while decomposition via C-C bond breaking, ipso-addition of H-atom to toluene, decomposition of benzyl radicals and reactions related to C6H4CH3 radicals have promoting effect for the consumption of toluene. Moreover, flow rate analysis is performed to illustrate the formation pathways of mono- and polycyclic aromatics.

New chemical sensors for adrenaline Adr were fabricated. For that, a thin film of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was templated with protonated adrenaline HAdr. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), capacitive impedometry (CI), or piezoelectric microgravimetry (PM) was integrated within each chemosensor for analytical signal transduction. First, molecular structure of prepolymerization complex of HAdr with bis(2,2'-bithienyl)methane substituted with the benzo-(18-crown-6) 2 and 4-carboxyphenyl 3 was thermodynamically optimized at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) level. Then, a HAdr-templated MIP film was deposited on the Pt disk electrode and on the Au film electrode of a 10-MHz quartz crystal resonator (QCR) by potentiodynamic electropolymerization from solution of HAdr, 2, 3, and the cross-linking tris([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)methane 4 monomer at the HAdr:2:3:4 = 1:1:1:2 mole ratio. For determination of Adr, the DPV peak current for the K4[Fe(CN)6] redox probe under batch conditions and the resonant frequency and capacity of the electrical double layer under FIA conditions were measured. The lower limits of detection (LOD) were 2 nM, 0.5 μM, and 1.5 μM for the DPV, PM, and CI chemosensor, respectively, indicating suitability of the DPV chemosensor for Adr determination in biological systems (-50 nM). The chemosensors were appreciably selective to Adr in the presence of common interferents.

Reduced instrument responses are presented for Thermal-Hydraulic Test Facility (THTF) test 101, which is part of the ORNL Pressurized-Water Reactor (PWR) Blowdown Heat Transfer Separate-Effects Program. The objective of the program is to investigate the thermal-hydraulic phenomenon governing the energy transfer and transport processes that occur during a loss-of-coolant accident in a PWR system. Test 101 was conducted to investigate the thermal-hydraulic response of bundle 1 and the main heat exchangers to powered operation and a single-ended rupture at the test section outlet.

AbstractThe worldwide retreat of glaciers is causing a faster than ever increase in ice‐free areas that are leading to the emergence of new ecosystems. Understanding the dynamics of these environments is critical to predicting the consequences of climate change on mountains and at high latitudes. Climatic differences between regions of the world could modulate the emergence of biodiversity and functionality after glacier retreat, yet global tests of this hypothesis are lacking. Nematodes are the most abundant soil animals, with keystone roles in ecosystem functioning, but the lack of global‐scale studies limits our understanding of how the taxonomic and functional diversity of nematodes changes during the colonization of proglacial landscapes. We used environmental DNA metabarcoding to characterize nematode communities of 48 glacier forelands from five continents. We assessed how different facets of biodiversity change with the age of deglaciated terrains and tested the hypothesis that colonization patterns are different across forelands with different climatic conditions. Nematodes colonized ice‐free areas almost immediately. Both taxonomic and functional richness quickly increased over time, but the increase in nematode diversity was modulated by climate, so that colonization started earlier in forelands with mild summer temperatures. Colder forelands initially hosted poor communities, but the colonization rate then accelerated, eventually leveling biodiversity differences between climatic regimes in the long term. Immediately after glacier retreat, communities were dominated by colonizer taxa with short generation time and r‐ecological strategy but community composition shifted through time, with increased frequency of more persister taxa with K‐ecological strategy. These changes mostly occurred through the addition of new traits instead of their replacement during succession. The effects of local climate on nematode colonization led to heterogeneous but predictable patterns around the world that likely affect soil communities and overall ecosystem development.

Over the past decade, long-term socio-ecological research (LTSER) has been established to better integrate social science research and societal concerns into the goals and objectives of the International Long-Term Ecological Research (ILTER) network, an established global network of long-term ecologicalmonitoring sites. TheHorizon 2020 eLTER project, currently underway, includes as one of its key objectives to evaluate the performance of LTSER platforms.This article reflects part of this evaluation: six LTSER platformswere assessed through site visits of the lead author, coupledwith reflections and insights of the platform managers, whoare also co-authors.We provide background for the mission and goals of LTSER, then assess the six international LTSERplatforms—Baltimore Ecosystem Study LTER, USA; Braila Island LTSER, Romania; Cairngorms LTSER, UK;Doñana LTSER, Spain;OmoraEthnobotanical Park CapeHorn LTER,Chile; and Sierra Nevada LTSER, Spain. While based on a strong theoretical foundation in socio-ecological research, there has been a steep learning curve for scientists applying the concept in practice at LTSERplatforms.We show positive impacts that have been achieved, including contributions to policy, land-use planning, and natural resourcemanagement.Weexplain key aspects of LTSERplatforms that have proven challenging, includingmanagement, interdisciplinary integration, and stakeholder collaboration.Wecharacterize the tensions between top-down desires for network harmonization, bottom-up demands such as local policy relevance, and platform-level constraints such as time and budget. Finally,we discuss challenges, such as local context dominating the character of LTSERplatforms, and the fact that scientists are often disincentivized from engaging in transdisciplinary science. Overall, we conclude that while the internationalnetwork offers important advantages to itsmembers, a more productive balance between local and global goals could be achieved, and membersmay need to temper their expectations of what the network can and cannot offer at the local level. We extend our investigation of backgrounds to new physics signals, following CMS's data-driven search for supersymmetry at the LHC. The aim is to use different sets of cuts in gamma + 3-jet production to predict the irreducible Z + 3-jet background (with the Z boson decaying to neutrinos) to searches with missing transverse energy + 3-jet signal topologies. We compute ratios of Z + 3-jet to gamma + 3-jet production cross sections and kinematic distributions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in alpha_s. We compare these ratios with those obtained using a parton shower matched to leading-order matrix elements (ME+PS). This study extends our previous work [arXiv:1106.1423 [hep-ph]] on the Z + 2-jet to gamma + 2-jet ratio. We find excellent agreement with the ratio determined from the earlier NLO results involving two instead of three jets, and agreement to within 10% between the NLO and ME+PS results for the ratios. We also examine the possibility of large QCD logarithms in these processes. Ratios of Z + n-jet to gamma + n-jet cross sections are plausibly less sensitive to such corrections than the cross sections themselves. Their effect on estimates of Z + 3-jet to gamma + 3-jet ratios can be assessed experimentally by measuring the gamma + 3-jet to gamma + 2-jet production ratio in search regions. We partially address the question of potentially large electroweak logarithms by computing the real-emission part of the electroweak corrections to the ratio using ME+PS, and find that it is 1% or less. We present an analysis of gamma-ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in the region around SNR S147 (G180.0-1.7). A spatially extended gamma-ray source detected in an energy range of 0.2--10 GeV is found to coincide with SNR S147. We confirm its spatial extension at >5sigma confidence level. The gamma-ray flux is (3.8 \pm 0.6) x 10^{-8} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}, corresponding to a luminosity of 1.3 x 10^{34} (d/1.3 kpc)^2 erg s^{-1} in this energy range. The gamma-ray emission exhibits a possible spatial correlation with prominent Halpha filaments of S147. There is no indication that the gamma-ray emission comes from the associated pulsar PSR J0538+2817. The gamma-ray spectrum integrated over the remnant is likely dominated by the decay of neutral pi mesons produced through the proton--proton collisions in the filaments. Reacceleration of pre-existing CRs and subsequent adiabatic compression in the filaments is sufficient to provide the required energy density of high-energy protons. 12 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Two selective chemosensors for adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) determination featuring molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) film recognition units were fabricated. For imprinting, three different thiophene derivatives were used as functional monomers. That is, the uracil substituent of bis(2,2'-bithienyl)methane 2 complementarily H-bond paired the adenine moiety of ATP, the boronic acid substituent of thiophene 3 covalently bound vicinal diols of the ribofuranose moiety, and amide substituents of bis(2,2'-bithienyl)methanes 4 bound to the pyrophosphate moieties. Different binding motifs adopted for the ATP recognition and the structure of the supramolecular pre-polymerization complex were optimized with the DFT computing at the B3LYP/3-21G((*)) level. MIP films were prepared by potentiodynamic electropolymerization of this complex with the imprinting factor of 9.47±0.2. An analytical signal was transduced with a 10-MHz resonator of EQCM and a Pt electrode for the piezoelectric microgravimetry (PM) and capacitive impedometry (CI) determination of ATP, respectively, under FIA conditions. Analytical properties of the MIP film were unraveled by spectroscopic ellipsometry, XPS, IRRAS, and DPV. The limit of detection was 0.1 and 0.2 μM for the PM and CI chemosensor, respectively, being an order of magnitude lower than the ATP concentration in biological systems. Moreover, cross-selectivity was demonstrated with the adenosine-5'-diphosphate (ADP) imprinting and ATP discrimination.

The present mechanism consists of 273 species up to chrysene and 1740 reactions. The rate constants of reactions of toluene decomposition, reaction with oxygen, ipso-additions and metatheses with abstraction of phenylic H-atom are updated; new pathways of C4 + C2 species giving benzene and fulvene are added. Based on the experimental observations, combustion intermediates such as fulvenallene, naphtol, methylnaphthalene, acenaphthylene, 2-ethynylnaphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, 1-methylphenanthrene, pyrene and chrysene are involved in the present mechanism. The final toluene model leads to an overall satisfactory agreement between the experimentally observed and predicted mole fraction profiles for the major products and most combustion intermediates. The toluene depletion is governed by metathese giving benzyl radicals, ipso-addition forming benzene and metatheses leading to C6H4CH3 radicals. A sensitivity analysis indicates that the unimolecular decomposition via the cleavage of a methyl C-H bond has a strong inhibiting effect, while decomposition via C-C bond breaking, ipso-addition of H-atom to toluene, decomposition of benzyl radicals and reactions related to C6H4CH3 radicals have promoting effect for the consumption of toluene. Moreover, flow rate analysis is performed to illustrate the formation pathways of mono- and polycyclic aromatics.
