description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2023 FinlandAuthors: Lehtomaja, Jan;The aim of this study was to evaluate climate impacts of a typical Finnish wind farm. Three research questions were: 1) What is the typical Finnish wind farm’s carbon footprint? 2) what is the energy payback time of the typical Finnish wind farm? and 3) does the typical Finnish wind farm have a better net-negative impact on climate than the commercial forest area on which it was built? Data for the study were collected via academic literature, wind turbine life cycle assessment reports, geographic information system (GIS) analysis and through the Natural Resources Institute Finland’s Statistics database. The GIS analysis was conducted to retrieve the volume of roundwood on the wind farm’s site. The carbon footprint of the typical Finnish wind farm was found to be 7,18 g CO2e/kWh and the wind farm’s energy payback time 7,06 months. This study found that during 22 years (consisting of the wind farm’s construction and operation phases) the typical Finnish wind farm had a net-negative impact on climate change of at least 169 767,72 t CO2. In the absence of the typical Finnish wind farm, producing the equivalent amount of electricity by Finnish electricity mix was considered in calculating the net impact of the commercial forest area. This resulted in a net-positive impact on climate change of 192 393,42 t CO2. However, the typical Finnish wind farm did not represent a carbon sink. Climate impacts represent only a part of environmental impacts caused by wind power. The results of this study might have implications for the acceptability of wind power by general society as well as used for calculating climate impact assessment.

A functioning circular economy will also have minimal waste generated which is sync with the idea of zero-waste. How all these aspects really work together is the focal point of this Master’s thesis where the aim is to see how the three factors of waste-to-energy, the circular economy and a zero-waste goal work together in accomplishing their respective objectives and to access their performance and potential in Finland using other Nordic countries as benchmarks. A qualitative research method of four semi-structured interviews with experts in Finland involved in various circular economy was supported by secondary sourced data on the other Nordic countries and if found that WtE has additional benefits to Nordics compared to other countries due to district heating utilization of excess steam that provides heat during the long winter months so henceforth offers higher energy efficiency. The state of the circular economy in Finland was harder to ascertain with the difficulty in showing concrete examples of a CE due to misunderstanding of the relatively new theoretical term and the many related terms. The overall conclusion for Finland was that a zero-waste goal was not the correct aim to have as this could still mean high incineration, instead Finland should look at the exemplarily example of Denmark which aims to be incineration free in the future. There would still be a role for WtE, only to a less extent, dealing with hazardous and residual waste. The role of recycling will grow in line with a true CE model which means that energy sourced from WtE will decline, As a result Finland should plan accordingly and invest less in WtE infrastructure and more in other alternative energy sources.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2016 FinlandAuthors: Asikainen, Mikko;Growing global energy consumption and its consequent hindrance to sus-tainable development poses one of the greatest challenges of today. Impro-vement of the end-use energy efficiency is commonly regarded as one of the most basic and significant countermeasures for curbing the rising energy needs. However, it seems that the progress of end-use energy management is currently hindered due to the complexities involved in the measurement and management of energy efficiency. In essence, the lack of appropriate energy performance metrics constitute a gap between the current organizational needs and scientific literature. Furthermore, the current scientific debate has questioned whether ener-gy efficiency, as a current concept, is able to respond to the extant needs in business management. Thus, there exists a demand for a conceptual change that would enable organizations to simultaneously promote sustainable deve-lopment and reach concrete results from energy management. For this reason, this thesis focuses on the concept of energy performance, which is able to en-compass both operational and strategic dimensions of energy management. In order to address the above-mentioned research gap, this thesis explo-res the barriers that hinder the development of energy performance measu-rement in the context of industrial companies, government entities, wholesale and retail companies and real estate companies. As the barriers and their in-teractions seem to constitute a complex problem situation, the research prob-lem is approached from a systems thinking perspective, which enables the ho-listic examination of the barriers. The chosen approach departs from most previous research, which has typically studied barriers in isolation, neglecting the potential relationships between the barriers. The main achievement of this study is to introduce a model for unders-tanding the interactive nature of the barriers to the development of energy performance measurement. From the perspective of business management, the created model works as a tool for the management of change, as it inc-reases the understanding of the paradoxal problem situation and enables ra-tional discourse to take place. By doing so, the model aims to address the cur-rent needs of organizations in developing specific and quantitatively measu-rable performance indicators for energy. ei tietoa saavutettavuudesta unknown accessibility

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2010 FinlandAuthors: Kortetmäki, Teea; The purpose of this treatise is to analyse five of the Copenhagen Climate Convention's main speeches to see how they supported or weakened the agreement possibilities in the convention. Particular focus will be on the elements that divide or unite negotiators and whether the summit's failing outcome is already built in the pre-planned speeches held at the main podium. Theoretically, the study builds on Kenneth Burke's identification thesis and Elizabeth L. Malone's climate change debate analysis. I combine these in my analysis using a revised version of Malone's argument family classification tool putting it into Burke's theoretical framework. The central concept is Burke's identification, whose manifestations are searched from speeches. The analysis will cover five of the main speeches from Copenhagen summit negotiators (the United States, China, Zimbabwe, the African Union and the Climate Group). Analysed speeches contain more elements that divide negotiators than elements with possibly uniting effect. The division between North and South is particularly distinct in most speeches. Another dividing issue is the major emitters' tendency to speak themselves out of more emission cut commitments instead of expressing willingness to engage in more ambitious accord. At the same time, less developed countries utter their mistrust which increases division and weakens the possibilities for negotiators to become consubstantial. Every participator agrees in public about seriousness of climate change, but this claim is supported only weakly by other arguments in their speeches. Copenhagen Climate Convention's failure can be foreseen in speeches that fail to build and recognise a common interest among negotiator countries. Rhetorical analysis reveals that climate change as an environmental problem is not faced by a ”global we” but from national perspectives, which weakens the possibilities for real action. The ”global we” facing and reacting to climate change has not emerged. This is a challenge for further study discussing the ways in which the real identification could be achieved and action taken. ei tietoa saavutettavuudesta unknown accessibility

However, biological conversion of several biogas feedstocks to biogas under anaerobic digestion has proven inefficient due to low conversion efficiency. Pretreatment of certain type of biomass has been known to improve the biodegradability and methane yield of the pretreated biomass. In this study, the effect of thermal pretreatments viz., pressure-cooking with steam (PC1), pressure-cooking with water (PC2), steam pretreatment in steamer and hydrothermal pretreatments on chemical composition and methane potential of kitchen waste was investigated. Grab samples of kitchen waste were collected from Yliotö restaurant located on the Ylistönrinne campus of the University of Jyväskylä. Methane production from untreated and pretreated kitchen waste was determined in batch experiments at 35 °C and 55 °C. Chemical analyses showed that untreated kitchen waste, which was mainly composed of vegetables trimmings (56%), fruit skins and spoilt fruit (43%) and bread (1%), had total solids (TS) content of 12.6 % with volatile solids (VS)/TS ratio of 0.94. PC1, PC2 and steam pretreatment resulted in an increase in TS and VS by 1.6-20.2 % and 0.8-21.1 %, respectively. On the other hand, TS and VS content of hydrothermally pretreated kitchen waste remained more or less unchanged. All pretreatments resulted in an increase in soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) and total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) concentration. However, complete loss of NH4-N was noticed in PC2. Loss of volatile fatty acid (VFA) (41.5-85.7%) was also noticed from all pretreated samples due to high pretreatment temperature used in the study. From untreated kitchen waste, methane yields of 426 ml/gVSoriginal at 35 °C and 452 ml/gVSoriginal at 55 °C were obtained. Similarly, methane yields obtained from pretreated kitchen varied from 410-439 ml/gVSoriginal at 35 °C and 406-462 ml/gVSoriginal at 55 °C. The results indicate that the studied thermal pretreatment methods had affected the chemical characteristics of kitchen waste to a large extent but no or little effect on methane yields. An increase in methane yields of 1.9-3.1 % was noticed in pretreatments viz., PC1, PC2 and steam pretreatment. The low or no increase in methane yield was probably due to loss of VFA during thermal pretreatment and the possibility of inhibitory products formation. ei tietoa saavutettavuudesta unknown accessibility

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2023 FinlandAuthors: Tuhkanen, Nikke; The aim of the research in this thesis was to find out how responsible management in sports facility construction is seen and implemented in the City of Jyväskylä when new sports facilities are built. Responsibility as a topical issue is now under the spotlight in all activities. When talking about municipal organisation, the importance of considering all dimensions of responsibility in management is even more emphasised. The study also examined what responsible management in the management of sports facilities construction means and what it means for the City of Jyväskylä and how participation is considered at different stages of the project. The research was carried out by interviewing five persons from the City of Jyväskylä who work in the field of sports facility construction, each from the perspective of their own service area and with slightly different responsibilities. The aim was to obtain as much information as possible from within the city organisation for the research questions. The research was conducted as a qualitative study using semi-structured thematic interviews. The interviews were analysed using thematic data analysis and typology. The research was based on previous theory on sports facility construction, responsibility and networks. The results show that the responsible management of sports facility construction is quite well implemented in the City of Jyväskylä. All projects are based on real need, often with a well-defined and often well-researched background. In the most important phase of the projects, the planning, all the main themes of responsibility are very thoroughly considered, economic, social and environmental sustainability. Project manager manages and supervises the project to ensure that the plans are implemented. In the City of Jyväskylä, participative involvement has also been taken into account widely in the various stages of the project, and participative involvement in the construction of sports facilities is being invested in and has gone a great step forward in recent years. Vastuullisuus ajankohtaisena aiheena on nykyään kaikessa toiminnassa erityisen tarkastelun ala. Puhuttaessa kuntaorganisaatiosta, vastuullisuuden kaikkien ulottuvuuksien huomioiminen johtamisessa korostuu entisestään. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena puolistrukturoituina teemahaastatteluina. Haastattelut analysoitiin käyttämällä temaattista data-analyysia ja tyypittelemällä. Tutkimuksen pohjalla aiempana teoriana käytettiin liikuntapaikkarakentamista, vastuullisuutta sekä verkostoja. Tulosten perusteella havaittiin, että liikuntapaikkarakentamisen vastuullinen johtaminen toteutuu Jyväskylän kaupungilla melko hyvin. Kaikki projektit perustuvat todelliseen tarpeeseen, joiden taustalla on jo tehty usein tarkat selvitystyöt.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2023 FinlandAuthors: Lehtomaja, Jan;The aim of this study was to evaluate climate impacts of a typical Finnish wind farm.
