    Energy ecosystems are under a significant transition. Local flexibility marketplaces (LFM) and platforms are argued to have significant potential in contributing to such a transition. The purpose of this study was to answer the following research question: how do market conditions and stakeholders shape emerging LFM platform governance choices? We approached this objective with an exploratory single-case study by conducting ten semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders in the Finnish energy ecosystem. The results of the content and pattern analyses revealed the key challenges to LFM implementation such as the current regulatory treatment of flexibility, high costs of gadget installations, and ensuring sufficient liquidity in the market. In addition, we also demonstrated that despite such barriers, the Finnish ecosystem is largely pragmatic about LFMs’ in its midst. All in all, we contributed to the non-technological streams of LFM literature by developing an exhaustive framework with four distinctive dimensions (i.e., ecosystem readiness, value-creation logic, platform architecture and governance, platform competitiveness) for LFM development, which helps academics, practitioners, and policy-makers to understand how novel platforms emerge and develop.

    Suvilahti, a suburb of the city of Vaasa in western Finland, was the first area to use seabed sediment heat as the main source of heating for a high number of houses. Moreover, in the same area, a unique land uplift effect is ongoing. The aim of this paper is to solve the challenges and find opportunities caused by global warming by utilizing seabed sediment energy as a renewable heat source. Measurement data of water and air temperature were analyzed, and correlations were established for the sediment temperature data using Statistical Analysis System (SAS) Enterprise Guide 7.1. software. The analysis and provisional forecast based on the autoregression integrated moving average (ARIMA) model revealed that air and water temperatures show incremental increases through time, and that sediment temperature has positive correlations with water temperature with a 2-month lag. Therefore, sediment heat energy is also expected to increase in the future. Factor analysis validations show that the data have a normal cluster and no particular outliers. This study concludes that sediment heat energy can be considered in prominent renewable production, transforming climate change into a useful solution, at least in summertime.

    With the substantial popularity of combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants in the nowadays power systems, special care must be taken to regulate frequency due to unique frequency response characteristic of the full-loaded CCGT units. This unique feature is documented in the literature; however, its effect on determining frequency response of the power systems was not addressed in detail. This study proposes a new analytical method to achieve a more accurate estimated size of a loss-of-generation disturbance. This method considers demand-side power deviations and transmission lines power loss as well as unique frequency response of the CCGT units following the event. Firstly, it is exposed that there is an approximately linear relationship between power and frequency deviations of these plants in a real-world power system despite the complexity of the CCGT model. This relationship may be represented by a negative droop gain. Next, the derived CCGT’s linear characteristic is formulated in the disturbance size estimation process. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed modifications is demonstrated through extensive simulations on a 36-zone Great Britain equivalent test system. ; © 2023 The Authors.     This paper presents a new framework for optimal planning of electrical, heating, and cooling distributed energy resources and networks considering smart buildings' contribution scenarios in normal and external shock conditions. The main contribution of this paper is that the impacts of smart buildings' commitment scenarios on the planning of electrical, heating, and cooling systems are explored. The proposed iterative four-stage optimization framework is another contribution of this paper, which utilizes a self-healing performance index to assess the level of resiliency of the multi-carrier energy system. In the first stage, the optimal decision variables of planning are determined. Then, in the second stage, the smart buildings and parking lots contribution scenarios are explored. In the third stage, the optimal hourly scheduling of the energy system for the normal condition is performed considering the self-healing performance index. Finally, in the fourth stage, the optimization process determines the optimal scheduling of system resources and the switching status of electrical switches, heating, and cooling pipelines’ control valves. The proposed method was successfully assessed for the 123-bus IEEE test system. The proposed framework reduced the expected values of aggregated system costs and energy not supplied costs by about 49.92% and 93.64%, respectively, concerning the custom planning exercise. ; © 2023 The Author(s).     This paper presents an algorithm for optimal resilient allocation of Mobile Energy Storage Systems (MESSs) for an active distribution system considering the microgrids coordinated bidding process. The main contribution of this paper is that the impacts of coordinated biddings of microgrids on the allocation of MESSs in the day-ahead and real-time markets are investigated. The proposed optimization framework is another contribution of this paper that decomposes the optimization process into multiple procedures for the day-ahead and real-time optimization horizons. The active distribution system can transact active power, reactive power, spinning reserve, and regulating reserve with the microgrids in the day-ahead horizon. Further, the distribution system can transact active power, reactive power, and ramp services with microgrids on the real-time horizon. The self-healing index and coordinated gain index are introduced to assess the resiliency level and coordination gain of microgrids, respectively. The proposed algorithm was simulated for the 123-bus test system. The method reduced the average value of aggregated operating and interruption costs of the system by about 60.16% considering the coordinated bidding of microgrids for the worst-case external shock.     Renewable resources and energy storage systems integrated into microgrids are crucial in attaining sustainable energy consumption and energy cost savings. This study conducts an in-depth analysis of diverse storage systems within multi-energy microgrids, including natural gas and electricity subsystems, with a comprehensive focus on techno-economic considerations. To achieve this objective, a methodology is developed, comprising an optimization model that facilitates the determination of optimal storage system locations within microgrids. The model considers various factors, such as operating and emission costs of both gas and electricity subsystems, and incorporates a sensitivity analysis to calculate the investment and maintenance costs associated with the storage systems. Due to the incorporation of voltage and current relations in the electricity subsystem as well as gas pressure and flow considerations in the natural gas subsystem, the developed model is classified as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. To address the inherent complexity in solving, a decomposition approach based on Outer Approximation/Equality Relaxation/Augmented Penalty is developed. This study offers scientific insights into the costs of energy storage systems, potential operational cost savings, and technical considerations of microgrid operation. The results of the developed decomposition approach demonstrate significant advantages, including reduced solving time and a decreased number of iterations.

    Blockchains, or distributed ledgers, are innovative information and communication technology (ICT) solutions that are emerging within various sectors and industries across the globe. This distributed ledger technology (DLT) is already widespread in certain sectors, mainly in the banking industry, often through corresponding banking, or syndicating and peer-to-peer (P2P) loans. Outstandingly, blockchain technology has the capability to enhance the transparency and authenticity of transactional processes throughout the whole supply chain. Another significant benefit that Blockchain technology provides, mainly coming from its transparent and decentralized nature, is the capability to decrease the information asymmetries among the collaborating partners. Through e.g. the digitalization of transactional mechanisms, decentralization of authority, Internet of Things (IoT) and asset management enabling as well as smart contracting, the improvement of the business's day-to-day operations is firmly forecasted. Importantly, the digitalization of the energy and other sectors will cause major alterations in current structures, and thus, it will require business model innovation. It is claimed that the decentralized nature of blockchain, mainly due to a reduction of middlemen could revolutionize current market structures and supply chains.Importantly, blockchain application is systematically growing across different industries, for instance in healthcare, voting systems, manufacturing, supply chain management, or luxury goods. It has also gained the attention of the energy industry, where digitalization is already visible in solutions such as smart meters and smart grids, electric e-mobility, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), energy cryptocurrencies and tokens, etc. This has resulted in the introduction of a novel concept of the Internet of Energy (IoE) in the academic literature. This literature analysis serves to determine the impact of blockchain on the imminent business models based on the renewable energy sector. The outcomes of this curiosity study provide numerous theoretical and managerial implications that can foster the widespread blockchain technology diffusion in global energy systems.

    Waste-printed circuit boards (WPCBs) account for approximately 3–6 wt% of total electronic waste. Due to their content of thermosetting materials and added brominated fire retardants, their recycling and disposal is difficult and not eco-friendly. Pyrolysis as a thermal degradation process may assist in the solution of this problem. In addition, using biomass as an additive can upgrade the bio-oil and fix bromines in the char. In this study, cotton stalk (CS) is chosen as an additive and kinetic of the pyrolysis of three samples namely: PCB, CS, and CS:PCB (50:50) were investigated by the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) at heating rates of 5, 10, and 15 K/min. Three non-isothermal methods: FWO, KAS, and Starink were found in good agreement with the TGA data; however, the FWO method was more efficient in the description of the degradation mechanism of solid-state reactions. For CS and CS:PCB (50:50), α was increased from 0.2 to 0.9 with the FWO method, and calculated Eα values were found in the range of 121.43–151.88 and 151.60–105.67 kJ/mol in zone 1, while 197.06–79.22 and 115.90–275.06 kJ/mol in zone 2, respectively. Whereas, for PCB in zone 1, Eα values were found to be in the range of 190.23–93.88 kJ/mol. The possible decomposition mechanism was determined by the Criado method, which was in agreement with the mechanism model for reaction order n = 3. The oil product was also analyzed using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis.

    This paper addresses the black start of medium voltage distribution networks (MV-DNs) by a battery energy storage system (BESS). The BESS consists of a two-level voltage source inverter interfacing MV-DN which has limited overcurrent capability. On the other hand, MV-DN normally includes several step-up and step-down transformers that are drawing sympathetic inrush current in energizing stage. Therefore, the major difficulty to perform black start by BESS during MV-DN island operation lies in the fact that the inverter has to simultaneous control the network voltage and its output current. This paper presents two control approaches for a BESS in order to control the inrush current during MV-DN black start. The proposed control schemes consist of droop, voltage and current loops in the stationary reference frame. The droop loop is used to generate the voltage reference. An intermediate voltage and inner current loops are designed for output voltage regulation, current reference generation as well as current tracking, respectively. New reference modifiers are included into droop and voltage loops to limit inrush current. The proposed control schemes are experimentally tested for energizing Ingå MV-DN in Finland by 1 MVA BESS, and their performance is compared in terms of inrush current value and voltage quality. The obtained results prove that both methods are able to feed the load with a fixed voltage in the steady-state as well as to limit the transformer inrush current considering the inverter overcurrent limit.

    Energy ecosystems are under a significant transition. Local flexibility marketplaces (LFM) and platforms are argued to have significant potential in contributing to such a transition. The purpose of this study was to answer the following research question: how do market conditions and stakeholders shape emerging LFM platform governance choices? We approached this objective with an exploratory single-case study by conducting ten semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders in the Finnish energy ecosystem. The results of the content and pattern analyses revealed the key challenges to LFM implementation such as the current regulatory treatment of flexibility, high costs of gadget installations, and ensuring sufficient liquidity in the market. In addition, we also demonstrated that despite such barriers, the Finnish ecosystem is largely pragmatic about LFMs’ in its midst. All in all, we contributed to the non-technological streams of LFM literature by developing an exhaustive framework with four distinctive dimensions (i.e., ecosystem readiness, value-creation logic, platform architecture and governance, platform competitiveness) for LFM development, which helps academics, practitioners, and policy-makers to understand how novel platforms emerge and develop.

    Suvilahti, a suburb of the city of Vaasa in western Finland, was the first area to use seabed sediment heat as the main source of heating for a high number of houses. Moreover, in the same area, a unique land uplift effect is ongoing. The aim of this paper is to solve the challenges and find opportunities caused by global warming by utilizing seabed sediment energy as a renewable heat source. Measurement data of water and air temperature were analyzed, and correlations were established for the sediment temperature data using Statistical Analysis System (SAS) Enterprise Guide 7.1. software. The analysis and provisional forecast based on the autoregression integrated moving average (ARIMA) model revealed that air and water temperatures show incremental increases through time, and that sediment temperature has positive correlations with water temperature with a 2-month lag. Therefore, sediment heat energy is also expected to increase in the future. Factor analysis validations show that the data have a normal cluster and no particular outliers. This study concludes that sediment heat energy can be considered in prominent renewable production, transforming climate change into a useful solution, at least in summertime.

    With the substantial popularity of combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants in the nowadays power systems, special care must be taken to regulate frequency due to unique frequency response characteristic of the full-loaded CCGT units. This unique feature is documented in the literature; however, its effect on determining frequency response of the power systems was not addressed in detail. This study proposes a new analytical method to achieve a more accurate estimated size of a loss-of-generation disturbance. This method considers demand-side power deviations and transmission lines power loss as well as unique frequency response of the CCGT units following the event. Firstly, it is exposed that there is an approximately linear relationship between power and frequency deviations of these plants in a real-world power system despite the complexity of the CCGT model. This relationship may be represented by a negative droop gain. Next, the derived CCGT’s linear characteristic is formulated in the disturbance size estimation process. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed modifications is demonstrated through extensive simulations on a 36-zone Great Britain equivalent test system. ; © 2023 The Authors.     This paper presents a new framework for optimal planning of electrical, heating, and cooling distributed energy resources and networks considering smart buildings' contribution scenarios in normal and external shock conditions. The main contribution of this paper is that the impacts of smart buildings' commitment scenarios on the planning of electrical, heating, and cooling systems are explored. The proposed iterative four-stage optimization framework is another contribution of this paper, which utilizes a self-healing performance index to assess the level of resiliency of the multi-carrier energy system. In the first stage, the optimal decision variables of planning are determined. Then, in the second stage, the smart buildings and parking lots contribution scenarios are explored. In the third stage, the optimal hourly scheduling of the energy system for the normal condition is performed considering the self-healing performance index. Finally, in the fourth stage, the optimization process determines the optimal scheduling of system resources and the switching status of electrical switches, heating, and cooling pipelines’ control valves. The proposed method was successfully assessed for the 123-bus IEEE test system. The proposed framework reduced the expected values of aggregated system costs and energy not supplied costs by about 49.92% and 93.64%, respectively, concerning the custom planning exercise. ; © 2023 The Author(s).     This paper presents an algorithm for optimal resilient allocation of Mobile Energy Storage Systems (MESSs) for an active distribution system considering the microgrids coordinated bidding process. The main contribution of this paper is that the impacts of coordinated biddings of microgrids on the allocation of MESSs in the day-ahead and real-time markets are investigated. The proposed optimization framework is another contribution of this paper that decomposes the optimization process into multiple procedures for the day-ahead and real-time optimization horizons. The active distribution system can transact active power, reactive power, spinning reserve, and regulating reserve with the microgrids in the day-ahead horizon. Further, the distribution system can transact active power, reactive power, and ramp services with microgrids on the real-time horizon. The self-healing index and coordinated gain index are introduced to assess the resiliency level and coordination gain of microgrids, respectively. The proposed algorithm was simulated for the 123-bus test system. The method reduced the average value of aggregated operating and interruption costs of the system by about 60.16% considering the coordinated bidding of microgrids for the worst-case external shock.     Renewable resources and energy storage systems integrated into microgrids are crucial in attaining sustainable energy consumption and energy cost savings. This study conducts an in-depth analysis of diverse storage systems within multi-energy microgrids, including natural gas and electricity subsystems, with a comprehensive focus on techno-economic considerations. To achieve this objective, a methodology is developed, comprising an optimization model that facilitates the determination of optimal storage system locations within microgrids. The model considers various factors, such as operating and emission costs of both gas and electricity subsystems, and incorporates a sensitivity analysis to calculate the investment and maintenance costs associated with the storage systems. Due to the incorporation of voltage and current relations in the electricity subsystem as well as gas pressure and flow considerations in the natural gas subsystem, the developed model is classified as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. To address the inherent complexity in solving, a decomposition approach based on Outer Approximation/Equality Relaxation/Augmented Penalty is developed. This study offers scientific insights into the costs of energy storage systems, potential operational cost savings, and technical considerations of microgrid operation. The results of the developed decomposition approach demonstrate significant advantages, including reduced solving time and a decreased number of iterations.

    Blockchains, or distributed ledgers, are innovative information and communication technology (ICT) solutions that are emerging within various sectors and industries across the globe. This distributed ledger technology (DLT) is already widespread in certain sectors, mainly in the banking industry, often through corresponding banking, or syndicating and peer-to-peer (P2P) loans. Outstandingly, blockchain technology has the capability to enhance the transparency and authenticity of transactional processes throughout the whole supply chain. Another significant benefit that Blockchain technology provides, mainly coming from its transparent and decentralized nature, is the capability to decrease the information asymmetries among the collaborating partners. Through e.g. the digitalization of transactional mechanisms, decentralization of authority, Internet of Things (IoT) and asset management enabling as well as smart contracting, the improvement of the business's day-to-day operations is firmly forecasted. Importantly, the digitalization of the energy and other sectors will cause major alterations in current structures, and thus, it will require business model innovation. It is claimed that the decentralized nature of blockchain, mainly due to a reduction of middlemen could revolutionize current market structures and supply chains.Importantly, blockchain application is systematically growing across different industries, for instance in healthcare, voting systems, manufacturing, supply chain management, or luxury goods. It has also gained the attention of the energy industry, where digitalization is already visible in solutions such as smart meters and smart grids, electric e-mobility, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), energy cryptocurrencies and tokens, etc. This has resulted in the introduction of a novel concept of the Internet of Energy (IoE) in the academic literature. This literature analysis serves to determine the impact of blockchain on the imminent business models based on the renewable energy sector. The outcomes of this curiosity study provide numerous theoretical and managerial implications that can foster the widespread blockchain technology diffusion in global energy systems.

    Waste-printed circuit boards (WPCBs) account for approximately 3–6 wt% of total electronic waste. Due to their content of thermosetting materials and added brominated fire retardants, their recycling and disposal is difficult and not eco-friendly. Pyrolysis as a thermal degradation process may assist in the solution of this problem. In addition, using biomass as an additive can upgrade the bio-oil and fix bromines in the char. In this study, cotton stalk (CS) is chosen as an additive and kinetic of the pyrolysis of three samples namely: PCB, CS, and CS:PCB (50:50) were investigated by the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) at heating rates of 5, 10, and 15 K/min. Three non-isothermal methods: FWO, KAS, and Starink were found in good agreement with the TGA data; however, the FWO method was more efficient in the description of the degradation mechanism of solid-state reactions. For CS and CS:PCB (50:50), α was increased from 0.2 to 0.9 with the FWO method, and calculated Eα values were found in the range of 121.43–151.88 and 151.60–105.67 kJ/mol in zone 1, while 197.06–79.22 and 115.90–275.06 kJ/mol in zone 2, respectively. Whereas, for PCB in zone 1, Eα values were found to be in the range of 190.23–93.88 kJ/mol. The possible decomposition mechanism was determined by the Criado method, which was in agreement with the mechanism model for reaction order n = 3. The oil product was also analyzed using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis.

    This paper addresses the black start of medium voltage distribution networks (MV-DNs) by a battery energy storage system (BESS). The BESS consists of a two-level voltage source inverter interfacing MV-DN which has limited overcurrent capability. On the other hand, MV-DN normally includes several step-up and step-down transformers that are drawing sympathetic inrush current in energizing stage. Therefore, the major difficulty to perform black start by BESS during MV-DN island operation lies in the fact that the inverter has to simultaneous control the network voltage and its output current. This paper presents two control approaches for a BESS in order to control the inrush current during MV-DN black start. The proposed control schemes consist of droop, voltage and current loops in the stationary reference frame. The droop loop is used to generate the voltage reference. An intermediate voltage and inner current loops are designed for output voltage regulation, current reference generation as well as current tracking, respectively. New reference modifiers are included into droop and voltage loops to limit inrush current. The proposed control schemes are experimentally tested for energizing Ingå MV-DN in Finland by 1 MVA BESS, and their performance is compared in terms of inrush current value and voltage quality. The obtained results prove that both methods are able to feed the load with a fixed voltage in the steady-state as well as to limit the transformer inrush current considering the inverter overcurrent limit.
