description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2014Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Malet, J.; Gelain, T.;Abstract During the course of a severe accident in a Pressurized Water Reactor, pressurization of the containment occurs and hydrogen can be produced by the reactor core oxidation and distributed in the containment according to natural, mixed and forced convection flows induced by break flow, wall condensation and spray systems used in some reactors' containment to prevent overpressure. Because of these phenomena, water can be collected in the sump containment, inducing further heat and mass exchanges between the sump surface and the atmosphere. Considering the large volume of the reactor containment, LP (0D) codes are preferred to CFD calculations, which still remain a very challenging task to compute. The French IRSN has tested different tools for containment studies with lumped-parameter codes and the reference code is now ASTEC/CPA, so that mainly results of this code will be presented here. This paper focuses mainly on several IRSN tests especially developed for containment studies and the above mentioned thermal-hydraulical phenomena. The objective of this paper is to present the validations performed with LP codes on these different experimental tests. Experiments on the TOSQAN facility are considered.

Abstract Gas turbine systems are among potential energy converters to substitute the internal combustion engine in future series hybrid electric vehicle. Fuel consumption of these powertrains strongly relies on the energy converter efficiency, the energy management strategy deployed on-board as well as on the transient operation during start-up phase. This paper presents a dynamic modeling and the fuel consumption calculation of an intercooled regenerative reheat gas turbine system used as an auxiliary power unit on a series hybrid electric vehicle. A vehicle model is developed and an optimization method is proposed to optimize the powertrain operation. It consists of using the dynamic programing as an energy management strategy in order to minimize the fuel consumption and the number of switching On/Off of the power unit. Fuel consumption simulations are performed on the worldwide-harmonized light vehicles test cycle while considering the electric and the thermal comfort vehicle energetic needs. Then, a gas turbine dynamic model is developed, where turbomachinery and heat exchanger components are modeled by taking into account their dynamic inertias. The efficiency, the power, and the fuel consumption are calculated during transient operations. Based on the optimization results of switching ON and OFF the system, the fuel consumption dynamic simulation results are considered instead of the dynamic programming results. A constant power start-up strategy and a constant fuel strategy were investigated. Results show an increase in fuel consumption between 2.4% and 3.8% with the first start-up scenario and between 5.7% and 6.4% with the second scenario, compared with static model.

Abstract The dynamics of isolated-photon plus two-jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. Cross sections are measured as functions of a variety of observables, including angular correlations and invariant masses of the objects in the final state, γ + jet + jet. Measurements are also performed in phase-space regions enriched in each of the two underlying physical mechanisms, namely direct and fragmentation processes. The measurements cover the range of photon (jet) transverse momenta from 150 GeV (100 GeV) to 2 TeV. The tree-level plus parton-shower predictions from Sherpa and Pythia as well as the next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from Sherpa are compared with the measurements. The next-to-leading-order QCD predictions describe the data adequately in shape and normalisation except for regions of phase space such as those with high values of the invariant mass or rapidity separation of the two jets, where the predictions overestimate the data.

Self-sufficiency does not seem a reasonable goal to pursue, but partial autonomy provided by renewable sources and a medium size storage would probably be profitable to the island community.

Boudier; Gabriel Staffelbach; Thierry Poinsot;Abstract While most academic set ups used to study combustion instabilities are limited to single burners and are submitted mainly to longitudinal acoustic modes, real gas turbines exhibit mostly azimuthal modes due to the annular shape of their chambers. This study presents a massively parallel Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of a full helicopter combustion chamber in which a self-excited azimuthal mode develops naturally. The whole chamber is computed from the diffuser outlet to the high pressure stator nozzle. LES captures this self-excited instability and results (unsteady pressure RMS and phase fields) show that it is characterized by two superimposed rotating modes with different amplitudes. These turning modes modulate the flow rate through the 15 burners and the flames oscillate back and forth in front of each burner, leading to local heat release fluctuations. LES demonstrates that the first effect of the turning modes is to induce longitudinal pulsations of the flow rates through individual burners. The transfer functions of all burners are the same and no mechanism of flame interactions between burners within the chamber is identified.

However, the reliability and power quality of marine current turbines are degraded due to marine biological attachments on the blades. To benefit from all the information embedded in the three phases, we created a fault feature that was the derivative of the current vector modulus in a Concordia reference frame. Moreover, because of the varying marine current speed, fault features were non-stationary. A transformation based on new adaptive proportional sampling frequency (APSF) transformed them into stationary ones. The fault indicator was derived from the amplitude of the shaft rotating frequency, which was itself derived from its power spectrum. The method was validated with data collected from a test bed composed of a marine current turbine coupled to a 230 W permanent magnet synchronous generator. The results showed the efficiency of the method to detect an introduced imbalance fault with an additional mass of 80–220 g attached to blades. In comparison to methods that use a single piece of electrical information (phase current or voltage), the fault indicator based on the three currents was found to be, on average, 2.2 times greater. The results also showed that the fault indicator increased monotonically with the fault severity, with a 1.8 times-higher variation rate, as well as that the method is robust for the flow current speed that varies from 0.95 to 1.3 m/s.

The first was about the procedures used in the test and evaluation of MPPTs. The second is an overview of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) MPPTs and improved MPPTs. Conventional MPPTs such as Perturb and Observe (P&O), Hill Climbing (HC) and Incremental Conductance (InCond); Improved MPPTs (are the modified versions of conventional MPPTs) such as Improved Incremental Conductance (Improved-InCond) and intelligent MPPTs such as FLC have been implemented and tested under two different levels of irradiance and temperature. A detailed description about the hardware and software implementation platforms (designed and built in our laboratory) is provided. Based on measured data, the MPPTs under consideration have been evaluated and compared in terms of different criteria, showing the advantages and disadvantages of each one. The comparison results showed that Improved-InCond gives a fast convergence to the MPP(Maximum Power Point). Whereas, FLC is able to adapt to the variation of irradiance and temperature levels. Thereby, a good performance is obtained wherein the MPP is reached in a short time as well as the power ripples are very small.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2014Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Malet, J.; Gelain, T.;Abstract During the course of a severe accident in a Pressurized Water Reactor, pressurization of the containment occurs and hydrogen can be produced by the reactor core oxidation and distributed in the containment according to natural, mixed and forced convection flows induced by break flow, wall condensation and spray systems used in some reactors' containment to prevent overpressure.

Generators, transmission lines and battery storage are accounted for through basic simplified models while the focus is put on electricity import/export budget. Self-sufficiency does not seem a reasonable goal to pursue, but partial autonomy provided by renewable sources and a medium size storage would probably be profitable to the island community.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type 2009Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Laurent Gicquel; G.

Wall; Jerry D. Murphy; Jerry D. Murphy; Shane McDonagh;Biomethane is a flexible energy vector that can be used as a renewable fuel for both the heat and transport sectors. Recent EU legislation encourages the production and use of advanced, third generation biofuels with improved sustainability for future energy systems. The integration of technologies such as anaerobic digestion, gasification, and power to gas, along with advanced feedstocks such as algae will be at the forefront in meeting future sustainability criteria and achieving a green gas supply for the gas grid. This paper explores the relevant pathways in which an integrated biomethane industry could potentially materialise and identifies and discusses the latest biotechnological advances in the production of renewable gas. Three scenarios of cascading biomethane systems are developed.
