    This paper presents a finite control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) based technique to reduce the switching loss and frequency of the on-grid PV inverter by incorporating a switching frequency term in the cost function of the model predictive control (MPC). In the proposed MPC, the control objectives (current and switching frequency) select an optimal switching state for the inverter by minimizing a predefined cost function. The two control objectives are combined with a weighting factor. A trade-off between the switching frequency (average) and total harmonic distortion (THD) of the current was utilized to determine the value of the weighting factor. The switching, conduction, and harmonic losses were determined at the selected value of the weighting factor for both the proposed and conventional FCS-MPC and compared. The system was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink, and a small-scale hardware prototype was built to realize the system and verify the proposal. Considering only 0.25% more current THD, the switching frequency and loss per phase were reduced by 20.62% and 19.78%, respectively. The instantaneous overall power loss was also reduced by 2% due to the addition of a switching frequency term in the cost function which ensures a satisfactory empirical result for an on-grid PV inverter.

    Multilevel inverters provide an output signal with low harmonic distortion and superior output voltages. This work proposes a new four-level T-type neutral point piloted (T-NPP) topology with higher efficiency and low total harmonic distortion (THD) and with the ability to withstand high voltage stresses, especially for high-power applications. The proposed topology is designed in such manner that the direct current (DC)-voltage stresses split over the components with strong possibilities to increase the load current and switching frequency. However, the operation of the proposed topology is based on two essential principles. The first principle is that each upper and lower switch of each leg consists of two insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) connected in series in order to withstand high voltage stresses and make it split over the two IGBTs in each switch. The second principle is using the DC-link circuit (T1 & T2) to generate 2Vdc and 1Vdc by connecting the bidirectional switches of each leg to the DC-link’s mid-point. Furthermore, the proposed four-level T-NPP inverter outperforms other converters by the high number of output voltage level, low number of components, simple structure and higher efficiency. Finally, the proposed T-NPP topology concept was validated via simulation, experiments and theoretical analysis.

    With the advent of a new Precision Time Protocol specification, new opportunities abound for clock synchronization possibilities within power grid control systems. The third iteration of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standard 1588 specification provides several new features specifically aimed at complex, wide-area deployments in which situational awareness and control require precise time agreement. This paper describes the challenges faced by existing technology, introduces the new time distribution specification, and provides examples to explain how it represents a game-changing innovation.

    Low-tension gas (LTG) flooding has been proven in lab-scale experiments to be a viable tertiary enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique in low-permeability (~10 mD) oil-wet carbonates. Work carried out previously almost exclusively focused on water-wet cores. The application of LTG in oil-wet carbonates is investigated in this study along with the impact of a hydrocarbon (HC) mixture as the injection gas on oil–water microemulsion phase behavior. The optimum injection gas fraction (ratio of gas injection rate to total injection rate of gas and water) for the hydrocarbon gas mixture in oil-wet carbonates regarding the oil recovery rate was determined to be 60% as it resulted in around 50% residual oil in place (ROIP) recovery. It was shown that proper mobility control can be achieved under these conditions even in the absence of strong foam. The effect of HC gas dissolution in oil was clearly shown by replacing the injection HC gas with nitrogen under the same conditions. Furthermore, the importance of ultra-low interfacial tension (IFT) produced by the injection gas and surfactant slug is proven by comparing injection at sub-optimum salinity to injection at optimum salinity.

    Costs to permit Marine Energy projects are poorly understood. In this paper we examine environmental compliance and permitting costs for 19 projects in the U.S., covering the last 2 decades. Guided discussions were conducted with developers over a 3-year period to obtain historical and ongoing project cost data relative to environmental studies (e.g., baseline or pre-project site characterization as well as post-installation effects monitoring), stakeholder outreach, and mitigation, as well as qualitative experience of the permitting process. Data are organized in categories of technology type, permitted capacity, pre- and post-installation, geographic location, and funding types. We also compare our findings with earlier logic models created for the Department of Energy (i.e., Reference Models). Environmental studies most commonly performed were for Fish and Fisheries, Noise, Marine Habitat/Benthic Studies and Marine Mammals. Studies for tidal projects were more expensive than those performed for wave projects and the range of reported project costs tended to be wider than ranges predicted by logic models. For eight projects reporting full project costs, from project start to FERC or USACE permit, the average amount for environmental permitting compliance was 14.6%.

    Maintaining high facility reliability in power plants is essential to secure long-term electricity supply. This paper applies the survival analysis to the actual unit level power generation data in Korea to estimate the relationship between facility reliability and the preventive maintenance. Duration of generators between forced outages is used to measure plant reliability. the empirical analysis shows that preventive maintenance cost, planned outage for maintenance, use rate, and reserve margin lead to the longer duration of generators and, in turn, the lower forced outage rates. We uncover that the marginal benefit of the preventive maintenance cost is decreasing at an increasing rate. It indicates that the marginal benefit of the “current” maintenance cost is minimal. Results in the paper imply that power plants in Korea might be spending unnecessarily high maintenance costs considering already having world’s lowest forced outage rates.

    Aiming at problems of power allocation and economic scheduling for independent multi-microgrid systems, a bi-level optimization method based on optimal power flow and consensus algorithm is proposed. The novelty of the method is that an independent multi-microgrid system is divided into two layers: in the upper layer, with the predicted output range of the microgrids as the input data, each microgrid is considered as a virtual power supply or virtual load, and taking the minimum network loss as the goal, the energy mutual aid and power allocation among the microgrids are transformed into solving the optimal power flow; in the lower layer, taking the upper layer power distribution scheme as the constraint condition, considering load fluctuation and wind/solar generation uncertainty, the optimal dispatch model of the controllable distributed generator is established based on the distributed theory and the consensus algorithm of equal cost increment, and the "plug and play" of the distributed generator is also realized. An islanded multi-microgrid cluster is taken as an example to verify the economy, security, and reliability of the proposed scheme. The advantages of the scheme have been shown by the simulation example. Simulation results show that the upper-layer method not only realizes the optimal power allocation of microgrids, but also reduces the power loss of the energy mutual aid among the microgrids; through the optimal scheduling of controllable power supply in the microgrid, the lower-level scheme not only improves the economic benefit of the microgrid, but also well suppresses the negative effects of the uncertainties, prediction errors and power fault removal on the multi-microgrid system, which improves the robustness of the system.

    High-efficiency wireless power transfer (WPT) systems can present a perfect solution for fast-charging autonomous guided vehicles (AGV) to improve working hours in high-tech warehouses. Stationary charging stations reduce separation distance, improving coupling factor and power transfer efficiency. Analysis and design of the WPT system focused on maximum power at the load with a SS compensation circuit to reach high efficiency while applying the theory of power transformers design to maximize the power handleability with the physical dimensions. The proposed concept fits small AGVs. This paper proposes a unique ferrite structure for the transmitter ferromagnetic core. This novel shape introduces horizontal angular misalignment resistance due to the transmitter’s omnidirectional concave disc ferrite core combined with an E-core ferrite at the receiver side. The proposed WPT system can output 200 W at 100 kHz. A realistic 3D model has been designed into a symmetrical equivalent to reducing complexity and computational effort. The visualization of the magnetic flux distribution demonstrated that the proposed design has a better path to flow without concentrating flux in small regions, reducing heating losses.

    Liquid biowaste represents more than 98% of the total municipal waste streams on wet basis and 4–5% on dry basis. Recent attention has been focused on how to manage it optimally, and several novel technologies are being developed to valorize it. Among the developing alternatives is a technology that operates continuously by integrating a hydrothermal reactor, a gasifier and condenser to recover hydrochar using any produced gases to power the system. This study introduces the “3-step evolution model” in order to simulate the hydrothermal reactor. The model has been developed in a MATLAB/Cantera environment and calculates the outputs as the products of a series of sub-stoichiometric char-gas reactions. Experiments with chicken manure slurry as feedstock were implemented for the validation of the model. Treatment of 32.16 kg/h of chicken manure produces 4.57 kg/h of hydrochar and 3.45 kg/h of syngas. The 3-step evolution model simulated the correct ratio of solid-to-gas, 57–43% (excluding the liquids). The experimentally measured carbon dioxide is used as a correction factor to calculate all the other parameters that cannot be assessed during the continuous operation of the hydrothermal reactor. The simulated compositions for carbon dioxide and methane were 94–96% and 0.5–0.8%, respectively. The values were close to the experimental results that ranged from 94.7% to 95.6% for the carbon dioxide and from 0.5% to 0.7% for the methane. The model predicts that higher temperatures of operation would increase carbon monoxide composition from 4–5% up to 7–8%.

    This paper presents a finite control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) based technique to reduce the switching loss and frequency of the on-grid PV inverter by incorporating a switching frequency term in the cost function of the model predictive control (MPC). In the proposed MPC, the control objectives (current and switching frequency) select an optimal switching state for the inverter by minimizing a predefined cost function. The two control objectives are combined with a weighting factor. A trade-off between the switching frequency (average) and total harmonic distortion (THD) of the current was utilized to determine the value of the weighting factor. The switching, conduction, and harmonic losses were determined at the selected value of the weighting factor for both the proposed and conventional FCS-MPC and compared. The system was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink, and a small-scale hardware prototype was built to realize the system and verify the proposal. Considering only 0.25% more current THD, the switching frequency and loss per phase were reduced by 20.62% and 19.78%, respectively. The instantaneous overall power loss was also reduced by 2% due to the addition of a switching frequency term in the cost function which ensures a satisfactory empirical result for an on-grid PV inverter.

    Multilevel inverters provide an output signal with low harmonic distortion and superior output voltages. This work proposes a new four-level T-type neutral point piloted (T-NPP) topology with higher efficiency and low total harmonic distortion (THD) and with the ability to withstand high voltage stresses, especially for high-power applications. The proposed topology is designed in such manner that the direct current (DC)-voltage stresses split over the components with strong possibilities to increase the load current and switching frequency. However, the operation of the proposed topology is based on two essential principles. The first principle is that each upper and lower switch of each leg consists of two insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) connected in series in order to withstand high voltage stresses and make it split over the two IGBTs in each switch. The second principle is using the DC-link circuit (T1 & T2) to generate 2Vdc and 1Vdc by connecting the bidirectional switches of each leg to the DC-link’s mid-point. Furthermore, the proposed four-level T-NPP inverter outperforms other converters by the high number of output voltage level, low number of components, simple structure and higher efficiency. Finally, the proposed T-NPP topology concept was validated via simulation, experiments and theoretical analysis.

    With the advent of a new Precision Time Protocol specification, new opportunities abound for clock synchronization possibilities within power grid control systems. The third iteration of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standard 1588 specification provides several new features specifically aimed at complex, wide-area deployments in which situational awareness and control require precise time agreement. This paper describes the challenges faced by existing technology, introduces the new time distribution specification, and provides examples to explain how it represents a game-changing innovation.

    Low-tension gas (LTG) flooding has been proven in lab-scale experiments to be a viable tertiary enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique in low-permeability (~10 mD) oil-wet carbonates. Work carried out previously almost exclusively focused on water-wet cores. The application of LTG in oil-wet carbonates is investigated in this study along with the impact of a hydrocarbon (HC) mixture as the injection gas on oil–water microemulsion phase behavior. The optimum injection gas fraction (ratio of gas injection rate to total injection rate of gas and water) for the hydrocarbon gas mixture in oil-wet carbonates regarding the oil recovery rate was determined to be 60% as it resulted in around 50% residual oil in place (ROIP) recovery. It was shown that proper mobility control can be achieved under these conditions even in the absence of strong foam. The effect of HC gas dissolution in oil was clearly shown by replacing the injection HC gas with nitrogen under the same conditions. Furthermore, the importance of ultra-low interfacial tension (IFT) produced by the injection gas and surfactant slug is proven by comparing injection at sub-optimum salinity to injection at optimum salinity.

    Costs to permit Marine Energy projects are poorly understood. In this paper we examine environmental compliance and permitting costs for 19 projects in the U.S., covering the last 2 decades. Guided discussions were conducted with developers over a 3-year period to obtain historical and ongoing project cost data relative to environmental studies (e.g., baseline or pre-project site characterization as well as post-installation effects monitoring), stakeholder outreach, and mitigation, as well as qualitative experience of the permitting process. Data are organized in categories of technology type, permitted capacity, pre- and post-installation, geographic location, and funding types. We also compare our findings with earlier logic models created for the Department of Energy (i.e., Reference Models). Environmental studies most commonly performed were for Fish and Fisheries, Noise, Marine Habitat/Benthic Studies and Marine Mammals. Studies for tidal projects were more expensive than those performed for wave projects and the range of reported project costs tended to be wider than ranges predicted by logic models. For eight projects reporting full project costs, from project start to FERC or USACE permit, the average amount for environmental permitting compliance was 14.6%.

    Maintaining high facility reliability in power plants is essential to secure long-term electricity supply. This paper applies the survival analysis to the actual unit level power generation data in Korea to estimate the relationship between facility reliability and the preventive maintenance. Duration of generators between forced outages is used to measure plant reliability. the empirical analysis shows that preventive maintenance cost, planned outage for maintenance, use rate, and reserve margin lead to the longer duration of generators and, in turn, the lower forced outage rates. We uncover that the marginal benefit of the preventive maintenance cost is decreasing at an increasing rate. It indicates that the marginal benefit of the “current” maintenance cost is minimal. Results in the paper imply that power plants in Korea might be spending unnecessarily high maintenance costs considering already having world’s lowest forced outage rates.

    Aiming at problems of power allocation and economic scheduling for independent multi-microgrid systems, a bi-level optimization method based on optimal power flow and consensus algorithm is proposed. The novelty of the method is that an independent multi-microgrid system is divided into two layers: in the upper layer, with the predicted output range of the microgrids as the input data, each microgrid is considered as a virtual power supply or virtual load, and taking the minimum network loss as the goal, the energy mutual aid and power allocation among the microgrids are transformed into solving the optimal power flow; in the lower layer, taking the upper layer power distribution scheme as the constraint condition, considering load fluctuation and wind/solar generation uncertainty, the optimal dispatch model of the controllable distributed generator is established based on the distributed theory and the consensus algorithm of equal cost increment, and the "plug and play" of the distributed generator is also realized. An islanded multi-microgrid cluster is taken as an example to verify the economy, security, and reliability of the proposed scheme. The advantages of the scheme have been shown by the simulation example. Simulation results show that the upper-layer method not only realizes the optimal power allocation of microgrids, but also reduces the power loss of the energy mutual aid among the microgrids; through the optimal scheduling of controllable power supply in the microgrid, the lower-level scheme not only improves the economic benefit of the microgrid, but also well suppresses the negative effects of the uncertainties, prediction errors and power fault removal on the multi-microgrid system, which improves the robustness of the system.

    High-efficiency wireless power transfer (WPT) systems can present a perfect solution for fast-charging autonomous guided vehicles (AGV) to improve working hours in high-tech warehouses. Stationary charging stations reduce separation distance, improving coupling factor and power transfer efficiency. Analysis and design of the WPT system focused on maximum power at the load with a SS compensation circuit to reach high efficiency while applying the theory of power transformers design to maximize the power handleability with the physical dimensions. The proposed concept fits small AGVs. This paper proposes a unique ferrite structure for the transmitter ferromagnetic core. This novel shape introduces horizontal angular misalignment resistance due to the transmitter’s omnidirectional concave disc ferrite core combined with an E-core ferrite at the receiver side. The proposed WPT system can output 200 W at 100 kHz. A realistic 3D model has been designed into a symmetrical equivalent to reducing complexity and computational effort. The visualization of the magnetic flux distribution demonstrated that the proposed design has a better path to flow without concentrating flux in small regions, reducing heating losses.

    Liquid biowaste represents more than 98% of the total municipal waste streams on wet basis and 4–5% on dry basis. Recent attention has been focused on how to manage it optimally, and several novel technologies are being developed to valorize it. Among the developing alternatives is a technology that operates continuously by integrating a hydrothermal reactor, a gasifier and condenser to recover hydrochar using any produced gases to power the system. This study introduces the “3-step evolution model” in order to simulate the hydrothermal reactor. The model has been developed in a MATLAB/Cantera environment and calculates the outputs as the products of a series of sub-stoichiometric char-gas reactions. Experiments with chicken manure slurry as feedstock were implemented for the validation of the model. Treatment of 32.16 kg/h of chicken manure produces 4.57 kg/h of hydrochar and 3.45 kg/h of syngas. The 3-step evolution model simulated the correct ratio of solid-to-gas, 57–43% (excluding the liquids). The experimentally measured carbon dioxide is used as a correction factor to calculate all the other parameters that cannot be assessed during the continuous operation of the hydrothermal reactor. The simulated compositions for carbon dioxide and methane were 94–96% and 0.5–0.8%, respectively. The values were close to the experimental results that ranged from 94.7% to 95.6% for the carbon dioxide and from 0.5% to 0.7% for the methane. The model predicts that higher temperatures of operation would increase carbon monoxide composition from 4–5% up to 7–8%.
