    Les for��ts du Bassin du Congo constituent l���un des plus importants r��servoirs de biodiversit�� dans le monde. Elles fournissent des moyens de subsistance �� plus de 75 millions de personnes qui comptent sur les ressources naturelles locales. Mais �� cause de la mauvaise gouvernance observ��e, cette richesse tend �� dispara��tre au fil des temps, ce qui repr��sente une menace pour la survie des populations qui y sont install��es. De nombreuses initiatives ont vu le jour pour pallier cette situation parmi lesquelles la certification foresti��re, REDD+ et les APV-FLEGT. Les pays du bassin du Congo ont fait de la gouvernance foresti��re une priorit�� au sein de la Commission des For��ts d���Afrique Centrale (COMIFAC). Pour y parvenir, il est ��vident que toutes les parties prenantes �� la gestion durable des for��ts se sentent concern��es et doivent s���impliquer. Dans cette perspective, le projet C4CV, cofinanc�� par l���Union europ��enne et le DFID a organis�� le Forum r��gional sur la Gouvernance Foresti��re (FGF) en R��publique du Congo. Ce projet est mis en ��uvre au Cameroun, en R��publique centrafricaine, en R��publique d��mocratique du Congo, au Gabon et en R��publique du Congo. Sous la direction du CIDT de l���universit�� de Wolverhampton, les organisations partenaires dudit projet dans les cinq pays sont : le Centre pour l���Information Environnementale et le D��veloppement Durable (CIEDD), le centre pour l���Environnement et le D��veloppement (CED) et For��ts et d��veloppement Rural (FODER) au Cameroun ; l���Observatoire de la Gouvernance Foresti��re (OGF) en RDC ; Brainforest au Gabon ; le Cercle d���Appui �� la Gestion Durable des For��ts (CAGDF) en R��publique du Congo, y compris le Field Legality Advisory Group (FLAG) en tant que partenaire r��gional et le World Resources Institute (WRI) en tant que partenaire international.     Considered to be the most affected, fragile and vulnerable to climate change, poor West African states are at the heart of the international climate regime. They are thus subject to a series of conventional obligations whose implementation is highlighted in this thesis. The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of the international climate regime by highlighting the realities of three target states, namely Togo, Niger and Burkina Faso. The focus was on climate governance, technical mechanisms and financial mechanisms for implementation.

    Le " Chapitre II : De la simulation...." résume ma connaissance des principales méthodes numériques utilisées en électromagnétisme. Suit ensuite le résumé de mes études les plus représentatives dans le domaine de la simulation numérique en électromagnétisme : une en statique, une en quasi-statique avec couplage faible et une en propagation d'ondes. Souvent seule la méthode appliquée à des cas test est présentée, car leurs niveaux de confidentialité empêchent d'en présenter les résultats quantifiés. Le " Chapitre III :.... À la récuperation " contient tout d'abord un état de l'art de la récupération d'énergie permettant de comparer les performances des différents couples sources/conversion. Pour cela, j'insiste particulièrement sur tous les facteurs à prendre en compte pour choisir le couple optimal dans un environnement donné. Ensuite, on y trouve le résumé des deux thèses et d'un DRT que j'ai co-encadrés dans le domaine. Le " Chapitre IV : perspectives " présente les évolutions de ma carrière scientifique dans les deux axes développés dans ce rapport. Pour les évolutions souhaitables des méthodes numériques de manière générale et plus particulièrement dans mon Département, j'en expose ma vision et comment je prévois d'y contribuer. Pour l'axe énergétique, je présente les travaux prévus afin de conforter nos succès récents ainsi que les collaborations en cours ou amorcées.

    The main objective of this study is to evaluate the light and thermal comfort in a 'transparent' office. This last term designates a working space whose outer wall is entirely glazed by a simple transparent glazing in a first case, and a transparent double glazing in a second case, in the context of arid environments with a hot and dry climate and therefore under the sky Bright sunny. Various solar protections are used for the case of simple glazing and the best performing among them is maintained for office simulations with double-glazing. The study was carried out using an experimental approach. Thus, computer simulations using ECOTECT and RADIANCE software were carried out for transparent desktop models in order to evaluate: i) illuminance on the worktop ii) luminance in the field Visual, (iii) indoor air temperatures, (iv) and annual energy consumption. It was carried out for south-facing offices at a location at a latitude of 34.48 {deg} North, at a longitude of 5.73 {deg} East. The evaluation of the results obtained is based on recommended reference values for the various simulated indicators. Based on the results obtained from natural light and thermal performance in a single-glazed transparent office, we have classified the cases tested according to their degrees of performance in order to choose the optimal orientation for the case of orientation South. In this respect, one notes essentially the performance of the office whose facade is a curtain wall double transparent windows oriented South equipped with a system 'Light shelf'.     This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University London Projected increasing temperatures and reduced summer precipitation in the UK raises questions about the sustainability of aspects of the agriculture industry and food security. This study investigates the potential impact of precipitation changes on sugar beet yield in Eastern England. Observations of precipitation was examined for the period 1971-2000 and the expected changes in precipitation were investigated using seven CMIP5 climate models for the historical phase (1971-2000) and RCP45 and RCP85 future scenarios (2021-2050). Three out of the seven models were found to show good agreement with observations but the MOHC ensemble mean was the closest to the observed means and was used for further precipitation analyses. Statistical analysis of the future precipitation changes were performed using the Met Office Hadley Centre (MOHC) model focused on changes between the historical phase and RCP45 and RCP85. Results showed a consistent and significant reduction in annual May-October precipitation under future scenarios. The study then investigated the impact of reduced future precipitation changes on sugar beet yield by applying controlled watering regimes informed by the CMIP5 projections to sugar beet plants in a greenhouse experiment over two seasons – the use of CMIP5 projections in this way is a first. In the first experiment carried out in 2014, a climatological watering regime (i.e. where the total seasonal rainfall for the different scenarios was applied in equal and regular watering events) was applied to the plants, which meant a 16% reduction in precipitation in the “future” category relative to a “control” category. Analysis of the yields indicated a statistically significant reduction in mean tuber wet mass: mean of 360g for the control and 319g for the future (p-value 0.03). This implies a potential yield reduction of 11% by 2050. In the second experiment carried out in 2015, a “realistic distribution” watering regime (i.e. where the total seasonal rainfall is applied in a series of watering events that reflect the analysed sizes and distribution of rainfall events in the different categories), this meant a reduction in precipitation in the months of June (-15.6%), July (-7.7%) and August (-3.7%). This resulted in statistically significant reduction in mean tuber wet mass between control (153g) and RCP85 (113g) with a p-value of 0.01. This implies a reduction of 26% in future yields under RCP85 by 2050. Results in this thesis further show how changes and variation in precipitation are intertwined with changes in soil moisture and yield of sugar beet plants. The findings will enable UK sugar beet farmers to identify potential areas of challenges in order to adapt their management practices to ensure maximum crop yield in future growing seasons. Moreover, from a global perspective, the findings here are also broadly applicable to a variety of agricultural crops in different parts of the world, where changes in yield may have important consequences to food security and food prices.

    While tourism and air transport are recovering from the impacts of the Covid pandemic, it seems timely to draw a synthetic view of future stakes combining the following topics: the greenhouse gas emissions scenarios for tourism, regarding which recent work has improved their understanding; the climatic impact of aviation, almost 60% of which is due to non-CO 2 emissions; alternative fuels (biofuels, E-fuels, hydrogen) and engine designs (fuel cells...) which are complex and controversial issues, and whose potentials should be assessed regarding their timing, environmental impacts, and their ability to meet long distance travel requirements. This paper analyses the extent to which the new options regarding fuels and engines can help decarbonize tourism and air transport. The answer is that they can partly contribute but do not render obsolete previous work on substitutions between types of tourism (short versus long distance...), between transport modes (ground transport versus air), length of stay, etc. Following this step, the paper deals with the position of aviation players and the type of arguments they use. We conclude on the necessity to make strategic choices among the options to avoid wasting investments.

    This dataset and codebook correspond to the second round of survey data gathered in France in 2023, within the project FULFILL - Fundamental Decarbonisation Through Sufficiency By Lifestyle Changes. As part of Work Package 3 (WP3) in the FULFILL project, we collected quantitative data from six countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, and India. The first round of the survey, consisted of recruiting a representative sample of approximately 2000 households in each country. In this second survey round, we recruit around 500 respondents from the initial survey round, ensuring representativity is maintained. This survey is very similar to the survey in the first round and includes a lot of identical items, including a quantitative assessment of the carbon footprint in the housing, mobility, and diet sectors, socio-economic factors such as age, gender, income, education, household size, life stage, and political orientation. Furthermore, the survey includes measures of quality of life, encompassing aspects such as health and well-being, environmental quality, financial security, and comfort. New for this second round, we have incorporated questions regarding the measures respondents adopted in response to the 2022 energy crisis.

    Les for��ts du Bassin du Congo constituent l���un des plus importants r��servoirs de biodiversit�� dans le monde. Elles fournissent des moyens de subsistance �� plus de 75 millions de personnes qui comptent sur les ressources naturelles locales. Mais �� cause de la mauvaise gouvernance observ��e, cette richesse tend �� dispara��tre au fil des temps, ce qui repr��sente une menace pour la survie des populations qui y sont install��es. De nombreuses initiatives ont vu le jour pour pallier cette situation parmi lesquelles la certification foresti��re, REDD+ et les APV-FLEGT. Les pays du bassin du Congo ont fait de la gouvernance foresti��re une priorit�� au sein de la Commission des For��ts d���Afrique Centrale (COMIFAC). Pour y parvenir, il est ��vident que toutes les parties prenantes �� la gestion durable des for��ts se sentent concern��es et doivent s���impliquer. Dans cette perspective, le projet C4CV, cofinanc�� par l���Union europ��enne et le DFID a organis�� le Forum r��gional sur la Gouvernance Foresti��re (FGF) en R��publique du Congo. Ce projet est mis en ��uvre au Cameroun, en R��publique centrafricaine, en R��publique d��mocratique du Congo, au Gabon et en R��publique du Congo. The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of the international climate regime by highlighting the realities of three target states, namely Togo, Niger and Burkina Faso. The focus was on climate governance, technical mechanisms and financial mechanisms for implementation.

    Considered to be the most affected, fragile and vulnerable to climate change, poor West African states are at the heart of the international climate regime.     Le " Chapitre II : De la simulation...." résume ma connaissance des principales méthodes numériques utilisées en électromagnétisme. Souvent seule la méthode appliquée à des cas test est présentée, car leurs niveaux de confidentialité empêchent d'en présenter les résultats quantifiés. Le " Chapitre III :.... À la récuperation " contient tout d'abord un état de l'art de la récupération d'énergie permettant de comparer les performances des différents couples sources/conversion. Pour cela, j'insiste particulièrement sur tous les facteurs à prendre en compte pour choisir le couple optimal dans un environnement donné. Ensuite, on y trouve le résumé des deux thèses et d'un DRT que j'ai co-encadrés dans le domaine. Le " Chapitre IV : perspectives " présente les évolutions de ma carrière scientifique dans les deux axes développés dans ce rapport. Pour les évolutions souhaitables des méthodes numériques de manière générale et plus particulièrement dans mon Département, j'en expose ma vision et comment je prévois d'y contribuer. Pour l'axe énergétique, je présente les travaux prévus afin de conforter nos succès récents ainsi que les collaborations en cours ou amorcées.

    The main objective of this study is to evaluate the light and thermal comfort in a 'transparent' office. This last term designates a working space whose outer wall is entirely glazed by a simple transparent glazing in a first case, and a transparent double glazing in a second case, in the context of arid environments with a hot and dry climate and therefore under the sky Bright sunny. Various solar protections are used for the case of simple glazing and the best performing among them is maintained for office simulations with double-glazing. The study was carried out using an experimental approach. Thus, computer simulations using ECOTECT and RADIANCE software were carried out for transparent desktop models in order to evaluate: i) illuminance on the worktop ii) luminance in the field Visual, (iii) indoor air temperatures, (iv) and annual energy consumption. It was carried out for south-facing offices at a location at a latitude of 34.48 {deg} North, at a longitude of 5.73 {deg} East. The evaluation of the results obtained is based on recommended reference values for the various simulated indicators. Based on the results obtained from natural light and thermal performance in a single-glazed transparent office, we have classified the cases tested according to their degrees of performance in order to choose the optimal orientation for the case of orientation South. In this respect, one notes essentially the performance of the office whose facade is a curtain wall double transparent windows oriented South equipped with a system 'Light shelf'.     This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University London Projected increasing temperatures and reduced summer precipitation in the UK raises questions about the sustainability of aspects of the agriculture industry and food security. This study investigates the potential impact of precipitation changes on sugar beet yield in Eastern England. Observations of precipitation was examined for the period 1971-2000 and the expected changes in precipitation were investigated using seven CMIP5 climate models for the historical phase (1971-2000) and RCP45 and RCP85 future scenarios (2021-2050). Three out of the seven models were found to show good agreement with observations but the MOHC ensemble mean was the closest to the observed means and was used for further precipitation analyses. Statistical analysis of the future precipitation changes were performed using the Met Office Hadley Centre (MOHC) model focused on changes between the historical phase and RCP45 and RCP85. Results showed a consistent and significant reduction in annual May-October precipitation under future scenarios. The study then investigated the impact of reduced future precipitation changes on sugar beet yield by applying controlled watering regimes informed by the CMIP5 projections to sugar beet plants in a greenhouse experiment over two seasons – the use of CMIP5 projections in this way is a first. In the first experiment carried out in 2014, a climatological watering regime (i.e. where the total seasonal rainfall for the different scenarios was applied in equal and regular watering events) was applied to the plants, which meant a 16% reduction in precipitation in the “future” category relative to a “control” category. Analysis of the yields indicated a statistically significant reduction in mean tuber wet mass: mean of 360g for the control and 319g for the future (p-value 0.03). This implies a potential yield reduction of 11% by 2050. In the second experiment carried out in 2015, a “realistic distribution” watering regime (i.e. where the total seasonal rainfall is applied in a series of watering events that reflect the analysed sizes and distribution of rainfall events in the different categories), this meant a reduction in precipitation in the months of June (-15.6%), July (-7.7%) and August (-3.7%). This resulted in statistically significant reduction in mean tuber wet mass between control (153g) and RCP85 (113g) with a p-value of 0.01. This implies a reduction of 26% in future yields under RCP85 by 2050. Results in this thesis further show how changes and variation in precipitation are intertwined with changes in soil moisture and yield of sugar beet plants. The findings will enable UK sugar beet farmers to identify potential areas of challenges in order to adapt their management practices to ensure maximum crop yield in future growing seasons. Moreover, from a global perspective, the findings here are also broadly applicable to a variety of agricultural crops in different parts of the world, where changes in yield may have important consequences to food security and food prices.

    While tourism and air transport are recovering from the impacts of the Covid pandemic, it seems timely to draw a synthetic view of future stakes combining the following topics: the greenhouse gas emissions scenarios for tourism, regarding which recent work has improved their understanding; the climatic impact of aviation, almost 60% of which is due to non-CO 2 emissions; alternative fuels (biofuels, E-fuels, hydrogen) and engine designs (fuel cells...) which are complex and controversial issues, and whose potentials should be assessed regarding their timing, environmental impacts, and their ability to meet long distance travel requirements. This paper analyses the extent to which the new options regarding fuels and engines can help decarbonize tourism and air transport. The answer is that they can partly contribute but do not render obsolete previous work on substitutions between types of tourism (short versus long distance...), between transport modes (ground transport versus air), length of stay, etc. Following this step, the paper deals with the position of aviation players and the type of arguments they use. We conclude on the necessity to make strategic choices among the options to avoid wasting investments.

    This dataset and codebook correspond to the second round of survey data gathered in France in 2023, within the project FULFILL - Fundamental Decarbonisation Through Sufficiency By Lifestyle Changes. As part of Work Package 3 (WP3) in the FULFILL project, we collected quantitative data from six countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, and India. The first round of the survey, consisted of recruiting a representative sample of approximately 2000 households in each country. In this second survey round, we recruit around 500 respondents from the initial survey round, ensuring representativity is maintained. This survey is very similar to the survey in the first round and includes a lot of identical items, including a quantitative assessment of the carbon footprint in the housing, mobility, and diet sectors, socio-economic factors such as age, gender, income, education, household size, life stage, and political orientation. Furthermore, the survey includes measures of quality of life, encompassing aspects such as health and well-being, environmental quality, financial security, and comfort. New for this second round, we have incorporated questions regarding the measures respondents adopted in response to the 2022 energy crisis.

    This dataset and codebook correspond to the second round of survey data gathered in France in 2023, within the project FULFILL - Fundamental Decarbonisation Through Sufficiency By Lifestyle Changes. As part of Work Package 3 (WP3) in the FULFILL project, we collected quantitative data from six countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, and India. The first round of the survey, consisted of recruiting a representative sample of approximately 2000 households in each country. In this second survey round, we recruit around 500 respondents from the initial survey round, ensuring representativity is maintained. This survey is very similar to the survey in the first round and includes a lot of identical items, including a quantitative assessment of the carbon footprint in the housing, mobility, and diet sectors, socio-economic factors such as age, gender, income, education, household size, life stage, and political orientation. Furthermore, the survey includes measures of quality of life, encompassing aspects such as health and well-being, environmental quality, financial security, and comfort. New for this second round, we have incorporated questions regarding the measures respondents adopted in response to the 2022 energy crisis.
