This paper discusses a number of historical events in the 20th century from the point of view of human suffering in demographic terms, and also examines briefly the role of science and technology in these events. On the basis of this discussion it is concluded that two priorities for humanity in the 21st century are preventing climate change from reaching catastrophic tipping points, and avoiding a new world war. In both of these endeavors the scientific community can and must have a prominent role. ; Peer Reviewed ; http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/61413/1/Del_siglo_XX_al_siglo_XXI_-_Desastres_naturales_y_desastres_de_origen_humano_(Apuntes_de_CyT).pdf

AbstractThis article examines the process in which shifting cultivation is becoming marginalized in the Río Plátano Biosphere of the Honduran Mosquitia. As the region becomes increasingly tied to the national society of Honduras, various socioeconomic processes are transforming communities in the reserve. This investigation focuses on three communities located along the eastern boundary of the biosphere.Few houses are still oriented solely on subsistence. The majority combine subsistence with various other money-making activities. This research demonstrates that the sustainability of shifting cultivation is not solely a question of its environmental limits, but also its value in comparison to other economic activities that are now present in the Honduran Mosquitia, as well as in other frontier regions of Central America. Keywords: Honduran Mosquitia, Río Plátano, sustainability, shifting cultivation, socioeconomic change

Based on the environmental impact caused by the consumption of energy produced by the burning of fossil fuel, global warming and the concern that natural resources are limited, theories of sustainable development to develop structures that help mitigate current environmental damage and preserving the world must be developed. This could ensure that future generations can enjoy the resources we have today. The construction industry generates large amounts of pollutants that are released into the environment during the construction process, including the emissions generated by the use of electricity from the burn of fossil fuels. For this reason, this research studies the feasibility of using renewable energy photovoltaic in the field office of infrastructure projects in Puerto Rico. This study consist on the use of a case study methodology to evaluated three different scenarios with different energy load that will be replaced with renewable energy in the area available in construction site offices. For each scenario a photovoltaic renewable energy system was designed that would meet the energy load of each case. A methodological model was created to conduct the energy analysis at the construction site offices during the construction process, to evaluate and compare the cost-benefit method with the sustainable feasibility of photovoltaic solar energy, and to identify indicators to measure sustainability within the construction industry. The contribution of this study is the development of a methodology to perform energy analysis for construction site offices in infrastructure projects and how to identify a photovoltaic power system that denote a sustainable solution for construction site offices.

The search for novel forms to generate electricity, renewable and clean, is a priority for today’s society. Renewable energy resources exploited and exploitable in each place are: the ability to produce biomass, position relative to the sun, wind, sea and others. The movement of the sea is a promising source of energy, renewable and clean, but conditions of each place are different, it makes difficult to use just one generation technology for every maritime area, each region has its specific conditions that benefit one to and other technology. This research produced a mathematical and computational model for the extraction of kinetic energy from Sea Waves power, especially for superficial and intermediate depths. The system cost of a float and an arm coupled to an electrical generator, the mathematical model implemented allows the variation of different parameters to assist a glimpse of the possibilities, limitations, advantages and disadvantages of this particular form of generation.

The crude oil dependence in Puerto Rico motivates the implementation of renewable energy sources such as solar energy. Unfortunately, there are several obstacles for this technology to become an acceptable option for general consumption such as uncertainties in the initial investment and margin of savings. The power purchasing agreements are established as a solution instead of making a capital investment or green loan. Commonly, these agreements are established between electric utilities and investors of generation systems higher than 50kW on infrastructure of an external owner. This research focuses on small business owners of up to 50kW. A robust methodology is presented to evaluate the economic feasibility of these agreements including factors such as contract length, electricity price, and profit margins. Sensitivity analyses show that the initial investment is the most critical factor. Therefore, a linear programing model was formulated to minimize this investment by selecting an optimum system configuration.
